Most transformation stories follow the "rags-to-riches" trajectory. People talk about how terrible their life was, and then glamorize how awesome their life is now - almost always skipping the middle part of what makes the transformation happen!
In this episode, co-host David Glover shares his story about failing out of Baylor, struggling with his weight, and how he turned it all around. David is an everyday dude who you can relate to, and his story is worth hearing.

Society glamorizes what "success" looks like and they conveniently ignore the road to get there. This is a problem that makes people not see the value in themselves, not achieve their potential, and become less resilient. Episode Summary: Tame uncertainty by opening communication lines and providing direction.
In times of crisis and change, uncertainty abounds. The best way to manage this involves allowing people to voice their frustration and providing a sense of purpose and way forward. People have real feelings and needs, and if they are not addressed, they will never give their best effort in the change. Providing a timeline and direction will provide meaning and direction to keep people moving in the right direction.

Episode Summary: Be flexible and aggressively seek feedback for the best chance of success
Don’t expect your plan to go swimmingly. Provide yourself and your teammates latitude to fail and adjust. Highlight the things that are going well. Just as in the beginning, always seek feedback from every level to ensure you are on the right course.
Episode Summary: Get input from your subject matter experts for the best plan
You’re building a plan for something you’ve never done before. The plan better have input from the people who are experts and people executing the plan for the highest degree of success. Don’t expect perfection, and consider all your options.
Episode Summary: understand and communicate the 2 reasons why you must adapt and change.
Human beings don’t like to change. It makes us uncomfortable, it’s challenging, it means we might fail. If you want to successfully adapt to a new way of doing something, your starting point should always be understanding WHY you are changing. This gives people reason to change and creates buy-in.

The book "Call Sign Chaos" by James Mattis is one of the best modern leadership and military memoirs of our day. Hon. James Mattis is a retired 4-star General in the Marine Corps and also served as the U.S. Secretary of Defense. Don't ever buy the lie that you aren't meant to be elite at something. That's a false statement uttered by people who don't have the courage or discipline to achieve the highest levels of performance. If you want to be the best of the best, you have to create a life of 100% focus on achieving your goal. It will look radical. It will look totally different than the rest of the society. That's why most people are average - because they don't have the ability or drive to make their life 100% focused on something.

One of the reasons that most people live mediocre lives is because we let ourselves be distracted by things that don't matter. You've heard the phrase "don't be afraid to fail" but I'm here to tell you the opposite. You SHOULD be afraid to fail. Unless, you know how to fail properly.
Our education system and our society doesn't know how to properly fail. When someone messes up, we just point and say "you're a failure" and move on to something else. We don't teach people how to address a failure, be resilient, and come back swinging even harder in the next round.
This episode is going to change that. Take a listen and I'll walk you through the essential steps you need to take every time you fail. I'll show you the proven techniques to make even your worst failure an opportunity to make yourself better.
Don't go blame someone or something else if you've failed. Just learn how to fail properly. Only then can you be truly "unafraid to fail".

It seems in this day and age that emotions have taken over our world. TV, news channels, blog posts - everywhere we look we see people making decisions based on emotion. And while that might make for a good prime time drama or news headline, it's not how we should be making decisions, and it is definitely not how we do big things.
Emotions make us shortsighted and self centered. If we aren't careful, we can make pretty bad decisions if we allow emotions to influence our actions. If, instead we want to learn how to solve problems effectively (which is the key to doing big things), we must learn how to put our emotions in check and elevate our perspective above the fog of our feelings.
Dealing with a personal conflict or a difficult situation at work, school, or home? Want to find a way through it? Check out this episode and start solving your problem and moving forward!

The way our society defines success is completely wrong. We are told that you are only “successful” if you make a lot of money or have a high social status, or are a leader of a big company. Unfortunately, this warped way of thinking of success doesn’t inspire people to be the best person they can be.
In this episode, I talk about my definition of what success really is and why it matters. This way of thinking about success is awesome because it inspires and challenges me at the same time. Give it a listen and I bet you’ll think the same!

I imagine you have a strong work ethic. You know how to sacrifice and dedicate yourself to accomplishing something. You have put in the sweat and the hours to accomplish your mission. Hard work is the foundation for any big thing. But…
...that’s not all there is to being successful. Being a hard worker does not mean you are moving closer to doing big things. In fact, it often can lead to us plateauing and not reaching our maximum potential. In this episode, I share something you should incorporate into your everyday life to continue moving forward on your Big Thing! It's a lesson I've learned and am currently working to incorporate into my every day routine.
It’s inevitable that you are going to be required to sacrifice and do things that are not enjoyable if you want to do something big - if not, it’s just something average. Recently, I found myself repeating a phrase to myself to keep me motivated to study for my Dental Board Exam - “trust the process”. In this episode, I explain what that phase means, how you can learn to trust your process, and why it’s the only thing that is going to help you accomplish your big thing.

Are you respected? If you want to do something big with your life, you definitely need to be respected by people around you. I like to call it the “hidden currency” of a person who can do something that is meaningful. Whether you are asking someone for money (sales or donations), advice, volunteer time, or a favor, a person has to respect you in order for them to want to work with you. If you aren’t respected, you won’t be able to bring people on board to support your mission and help you create meaning and value in our world.
This episode talks about the 2 ways you can get respect. Each one is good in itself but ultimately depends on what you are trying to go do.
At the end of a year, we naturally think about the future. We dream about the new and improved things we want to go do. We envision a better life, a new accomplishment, something we can be proud of. And while I am 100% in favor of thinking big thoughts and accomplishing amazing things, I think we can easily get lost in pursuing the future without addressing areas in our lives that can enable us to actually accomplish our goals. The best foundation for your future begins with knowing yourself intimately - your strengths and weaknesses - and letting that knowledge guide your future path.
In this episode, I guide you through how to conduct your own Internal Review and why it matters. This is a must if you want to be someone who does something exceptional with your life, and not just talk about it.

This episode is my review of the leadership book Extreme Ownership by Jocko Willink and Leif Babin. This is probably one of the most influential leadership and personal development books written in our modern time. If you want to become a dominant leader who has excellent personal habits, this is a must-read!
I cover the technical components of the book and also discuss many of the themes the authors outline to make you and I better leaders and people. We’ve talked about many of these concepts in previous podcast episodes, so it’s a great book that compliments what we believe and challenges us to grow so we can dominate, lead, and win.
You can purchase the book through this link
What: We all know the importance of doing things that will set us up for personal success. Eating healthy, good sleep, fostering positive relationships, taking risks - all these are examples of actions we can take to make us better personally. In episode 19, we took that same idea and applied it to leadership, specifically looking at actions and mentalities that leaders should take to set their team up for success. In this episode, we continue that theme, but focus on personal actions and habits that will make you a successful leader. These actions focus on traits that will allow you to lead more effectively, and keep your mentality strong through the ups and downs of a leadership journey.
Why: Leadership is hard, demanding, and confusing. It is not something that just naturally happens, it’s not magic, but rather groomed and perfected over time. If you want to become a more effective leader, there are certain habits and actions you need to incorporate into your daily life to grow and develop. It’s no different than an athlete who must eat healthy, train, and sleep to be successful.
The Breakdown:
Tie-Up: Each one of these actions are things you can do personally that will help you become a better leader. While they do not directly correlate to a leadership action, they are foundational habits that will help you move your team to a future position. When you practice these habits (learning, fitness, balance, under-reacting, dreaming), you will build positive characteristics that naturally flow into you being a great leader who is knowledgeable, durable, thinks clearly, dedicated to the success of both the mission and people, and also has a clear understanding of where they want to go.
Application:
What: We hear all the time about the importance of setting ourselves up for success. Things like reading, eating healthy, exercising, networking - all great things we should be doing if we want to accomplish something. But what about from a leadership perspective? In this episode, we will talk about 3 habits that leaders must incorporate into their leadership style to make their team successful.
The Breakdown:
Application:
What: Every leader is required to make decisions that move their team from where they are now to a future point. This episode shows you how to approach making any decision.
Why: As a leader who’s had to make many decisions, there often is a conflict between making a decision quickly and making a decision that has the best possible outcome. Put differently, you often need to decide if you want to be first, or do you want to be the best? This applies to decisions made in business, relationships, school, and even in your personal life. 80% of the time, you will not be able to make a decision that is both fast AND the best (which would be the ideal scenario, and every leader should be actively growing to improve this area). As a leader, you need to make a decision that will provide the most benefit to moving your team forward, and leaders must learn to distinguish and prioritize their decision as needing to be first, or needing to be the best.
Breakdown: What does it mean to focus on being “first” or being the “best”
First - There are many decisions where the primary benefit is just to get something moving. Your solution or course of action does not have to be perfect, in fact, it will likely be altered as you go along. Your primary focus in making a “first” decision is to get an action plan out quickly and get the ball rolling. In these types of situations, there usually is an opportunity that will only be available for a short period of time, or a project that just needs to get started to meet the deadline. Leaders who are decisive thrive here because they don’t need a perfect solution, they just need action.
Best - There are situations where your plan must be the best, and so your priority and focus must be primarily on developing the best possible solution. In these types of situations, you typically only have 1 chance to get it right, so it needs to be perfect, otherwise you will fail. As a leader, your focus is on gathering information and resources to draw up the best plan, no matter how long it might take. Leaders who have to be perfect thrive in this area because they need a perfect plan more than they need fast action.
Tie Up: As a decision maker, the ideal scenario is for a leader to develop the best solution in as short amount of time as possible. Often times, however, that is not realistic, especially as we are growing as a leader. Learning to categorize each decision as needing to be “first” or the “best” will help you place the right priority and effort to achieve the best outcome.
Application: To become a better decision maker, use what we’ve talked about previously as a lens to view every decision. Here are some specific questions you can ask:

This short explainer episode is here to tell what Big Things Done is and why it exists.
My name is Andrew Glover, and I am the founder of Big Things Done. I founded my brand because I believe every one of us wants to do something big in our lives. We all want to leave a legacy, be known for making something better, or doing something great. More importantly, however, I believe we all CAN DO big things too! It doesn't matter who you are, where you come from, or what you believe, you and I have the ability to make our lives count for something amazing.
Big Things Done is a resource to help you accomplish whatever big thing you have in your life. From leadership to personal growth and development, we cover practical tips, principles and techniques to make you someone who does something big, not just dream about them.
Join me as I accomplish big things in my life, and let me know what you are doing in your life as well!
In this episode, we continue our conversation about how to turn an idea into action, and we focus on 4 things that often hinder us from taking action on an idea we have.
Losing Passion - one of the best ways to ensure your passion for an idea is mature enough to sustain you is to purposefully distance yourself from your idea for 1-2 weeks.
Need for Resources - it can be frustrating to spend time getting resources instead of making progress toward your goal, but the reality is getting your resources is PART of achieving your goal. Embrace that fact and accept it as part of the process.
Fear of Failure (Personal) - no one likes to lose, and we often convince ourselves we are going to lose even before we start. One way to keep yourself from extinguishing your own flame is by ensuring you have realistic expectations for yourself.
Fear of Failure (Social) - we all care about what other people think about us. Whenever you worry about what anyone will think of you if you fail, just remember that you are at least doing something that few other people are trying to do. Take pride in that and let that motivate you.
SYE 15: Dominate Your Tasks
Being someone who does big things means that you MUST stay on track with accomplishing your tasks and delivering on your promises to people. In order to keep track and execute all of your tasks properly, here are 3 ways you can dominate everything you need to do.
WHAT YOU’LL LEARN - 2:55 min
WHY IT MATTERS - 3:07 min
THE BREAKDOWN - 5:45 min
Here are the three focus areas for any leader who wants to turn an idea into action.
Doing your tasks. This is where most people stop. We talk and strategize all the time about how to do something, but when we talk about the actions we have actually taken, we have nothing to say. Here’s how to not fall victim to cheap talk and how to make progress. Remember, the key to doing Big Things is simply doing them.
THE TIE UP - 16:15 min
APPLICATION - 17:10 min
Big things in our lives don’t just happen. We have to work, fight, and aggressively pursue them, which takes time, energy, focus, and resources. Along that note, we can’t expect to do big things or make improvements in our lives if we are wasting our time. One of the biggest wastes of time in our modern day lives is downtime, or transition time.
Downtime or Transition Time: Simply put, any moment of your day that you are not engaged in an activity or event. This can be something like your commute to work, time between meetings, or waiting for an appointment. We often spend these 15 - 60 minute moments looking at our phone or staring out the window.
Why should you eliminate your downtime?

What is a victim? A victim is a person who has something happen to them that was bad, unexpected, and out of their control. Being laid off from a job, a tornado leveling your house, or being diagnosed with cancer are all common instances of people being victims.
What is a victim mentality? Every person in the world is a victim of something at one point or another. The issue, however, arises when we continue to believe that we are powerless to do anything in our situation, and even require some other person or force to save us.
What is a Victor? A victor is the same as a victim except for one part - they don’t admit that everything is out of their control. A victor focuses on what they can do to make the situation better. They don’t blame anyone for the things that have happened, because it simply doesn’t matter. While they cannot control everything, a victor knows that the next step they take is 100% in their power, and the are determined to move to a future, improved state (which, by the way, is exactly what a leader is).
How do you Identify if you are a victim or a victor? It’s all based on your first reaction to a bad situation. Do you concentrate on the past? Or do you focus on your future trajectory? Do you blame the entity that is out of your control, or do you empower yourself to own the situation and make it better?

If you want to do Big Things in your life, you have to put yourself in a position to do so. That means having the time, energy, focus, money, or other resources to dedicate towards your goal. One way to put yourself in a position to do great things is to meal prep.
Meal Prep: Preparing your meals in advance (breakfast, lunch, dinner, or snacks) for an extended period of time (a few days, 1 week, 1 month, etc).

Identify what you need to be the best at your job or place of influence to build credibility. Ideas:
Find something not right at your workplace and fix it! Or, start something small that adds value to your peers or organization. Ideas:
Clear up a convoluted process that is inefficient
Work-related stress is on the rise, and that is indicated by the growing body of studies and the multitude of health-related employee benefit programs companies now offer. Employers are thankfully realizing that burned out employees destroy productivity and actually increase operating costs (not to mention the negative effects on the human being...that’s pretty important too).
A little bit of stress is always going to be present in the workplace - and that is mostly a good, healthy thing. From my experience in the military, however, I have found that when work-related stress becomes chronic and unsolvable, that’s when it starts to degrade the performance of your team. As a leader, it is your responsibility to limit that type of stress that hinders performance and ultimately leads to employees feeling burned out.
There are all sorts of ways modern companies are trying to make work less stressful. But no matter how many hip programs and services an organization can offer, culture is still king when it comes to reducing work-related stress. If you want to keep employees performing their best, first ensure that your culture is one that ultimately shows respect to your team. Here are two things to think about when it comes to building a healthy climate in your organization.
Want to ensure your employees aren’t getting burned out? Make sure your organization’s culture is one where leaders are engaged and empowered to help their teammates. All the yoga classes in the world can’t compensate for a non-supportive culture.

Recall the definition of what a leader is from Episode 7: A leader is someone who is ahead of everyone else, and works to bring their team to their future state.
Episode 8 is all about the second part of this definition - what it means for a leader to bring their team to their future state. I’ve been in countless organizations where a “leader” talked about a future state or goal, but the organization never progressed toward it. How do you avoid just talking about big things and actually going and doing them? How do you lead your team to accomplish your goals?
Application: Always carry a way to write down action plan details so you do not forget and can keep people accountable. The best way to lose leadership credibility is to say you’ll do something and then never follow through. Also, resolve to not leave your meetings until an action plan has been established and can be implemented. There are very few meetings where an action plan isn’t warranted - so any time you leave a meeting without one was a waste of time.
Application: Find specific examples and instances of how what you are doing matters. How did your product change a customer’s life? How did your service improve a company? Somehow, some way, find the specific ways your team’s efforts made an impact and share it with them.
In this two-part series, I detail out the basic definition of what it means to be a leader. Too often, our world produces books and speeches about the qualities of a leader, but rarely does anyone take the time to discuss the definition of what a leader is. While these conversations are good, they do not serve to equip people to develop and grow into effective leaders - because they gloss over the basics, which is where we all need to start. And that is a shame, because leadership is THE THING THAT CAN SOLVE EVERY PROBLEM IN OUR WORLD.
Here’s my definition of what a leader is:
A leader is someone who is ahead of everyone else, and works to bring their team to their future vision.
In Episode 7, we talk about the first part of that definition - what it means for a leader to be a person who is ahead of everyone else. And it boils down to 2 simple facts:
Application: commit to a future state. Detail out a goal or status that you want for yourself and your organization. If you aren’t sure what thi means, go listen to Episode 1 of the Big Things Done Podcast, where we talk about how to find “your big thing”.
Application: Find the link between your future state and your daily tasks. Divide a piece of paper into 2 columns, left and right. On the left column, write out every one of your daily tasks. In the middle of the right column, write your future state or desired goal. Now draw a line between each of your tasks and your future state. Above each line, write 3-5 words that explains how the task relates or brings you closer to your future state.
Be sure to listen to Episode 8 (part 2) for the second part of the definition of leadership.

When it comes to doing Big Things, few people have built as iconic of charity organizations as Tom Lennox, the founder of Pelotonia and Chainbreaker. Combined, these organizations bring together nearly 10,000 people to participate in annual bike rides in Columbus, OH and Minneapolis, MN and have raised $159M for life-saving cancer research. Both organizations operate and feel different than most common-place charities, and that is primarily due to Tom’s extensive knowledge of building brands and running businesses. This interview focuses on the very beginning of the organizations and how the values and identity of Pelotonia and Chainbreaker were formed.
Here are some of the main themes from the interview:

Are you tired of giving up on your dreams and goals when things get hard?
Pay attention to your stats.
We have been taught to only think about stats that are in the past - how much money we’ve made, what our profit margins were, how much weight we’ve lost. We call these metrics “lagging metrics”, because they only tell you about what happened in the past. These stats are ok, but they aren’t the best, because they don’t give any indication that you can do better or are moving toward your goal. That’ll make even the best person eventually want to quit.
Here’s a better approach - start paying attention to your leading metrics. Leading metrics are actions that you take to influence a future event. These are metrics, that if you do them well, you will reach your goal. I guarantee you already know what these are, but I’m willing to bet that you don’t use these to say you’re successful on a daily basis. You should start.
If you are tired of feeling bad about not reaching your goals and want to start making progress toward your BIG THING, listen to the episode to learn about how to use your stats properly!

We all have a story of how we got to where we are today, and in this episode, I share a little about my personal journey and my Big Thing. I was hesitant at first to open up about my story - only because it’s not very dramatic and doesn’t involve some sort of cool, crazy, radical transformation. But as I look back on the “average” events in my life, I can point to multiple lessons that can help me get better in the future. My purpose in sharing my story is to inspire you to look at your story, identify the valuable lessons that you’ve learned, and start making yourself better.
Have you ever seen someone who has a lot good things going on in their life? They're really busy, making big things happen - how do they have the time to do that?? They protect their time Here’s a reality check: our culture is sloppy when it comes to spending time wisely. We are taught that it is ok to let our life’s circumstances dictate what we do. We are rewarded for thinking we are “victims” of our career, our friends, or how we're feeling today. The instant entertainment-focused world we live in wants you to spend your time with their content. That's NOT ok! If you are serious about doing something big in your life, you have to abolish this type of thinking. You have to go on the OFFENSIVE and PROTECT your time to use it wisely. In this episode, I walk through a great way to do this, and it centers around building your strategic calendar.
We’ve all had a great idea that we wanted to go do. But ask yourself, how many times did you actually go do it? Or maybe you’re in a company that presented a brilliant new product - did anything ever develop after the initial meeting?
How do we keep that from happening? How do we move past this and start doing Big Things?
It all depends on your first reaction when you want to go do something. Often times, when we face something big, the first thing we say is “I hope that I can do it”. But that’s not how you turn ideas into action.
Hope is a dangerous word for people who want to do something big. In this episode, I share my experience with “hope” and show a much better way to approach your big thing. The application will help you develop into a person who’s first reaction to something big is “here’s my plan”.
We all want to do something big with our lives - every one of us. Losing weight, making money, starting a business, creating a new product, fixing something that’s broken - we all want to do something big.
But big things don’t just happen randomly - they require skills, habits, and characteristics to make them a reality. Whether your goal is personal or organization, all require certain distinct traits to lead yourself and your team to achieve at a high level.
Episode 1 takes this concept and relates it to the purpose behind this entire podcast - helping people and teams get something big accomplished. I share how my active duty military experiences have given me a unique perspective that can help you accomplish your big thing. This podcast is all about giving you practical things you can do to achieve your goals. Everything we talk about I have actually put into practice and executed - and so can you! Every episode will have an application, and this episode asks you to define your “big thing” in much more detail than you probably have.
