San Francisco has lost a dear and faithful native daughter who was proud of her 108 years of living in the City. Maria Laiolo Canonica passed away on Friday, October 16. She was the beloved wife of the late René J. Canonica, founder of Rainbow Painting & Decorating Company. Born June 15, 1907, she was the daughter of Delfina and Antonio Laiolo, Director of Banco Popolare Fugazi and Vice-President of Bank of America under A. P. Giannini. Throughout her life, Maria learned to appreciate the City, the arts, and the joys of friendship. She attended Spring Valley Grammar School and Galileo High School, graduating in 1926. Maria studied voice (lyric soprano) in Europe and performed in concert in Italy as well as on stage and radio in San Francisco. Her talent in the musical world along with her love of worldwide travel, Italian and French languages, piano, opera and musical offerings in San Francisco, made her the especially amazing woman she was. Maria's delightful charm and ever-cheerful, positive nature were noted by all who knew her. Maria was renowned for her wit and joke-telling ability. In all her roles, whether known as Maria, Mom, Mimi or Zia Mia, she will be sorely missed. Maria was Past-President and Board member of Italian Welfare Agency and Auxiliary. For the past 35 years Maria's home has been The Sequoias San Francisco where she was surrounded by dear friends who were fellow residents as well as by caring and devoted staff. Hers was a life well-lived and her genuine compassion, easy-going personality and sparkling smile enriched the lives of all who were blessed to be included in Maria's life. A favorite quote from Maria is: "God has been good to me, and maybe volunteering has kept me young and happy!"
