John the Baptist had the right motive for following Jesus, and it was this: Jesus must become greater and I must become less. He must increase and I must decrease. Today let’s see what making Jesus greater in our lives should look like!
Imagine Peter, a good Jewish boy telling his parents he was going to follow a Jewish carpenter who claimed to be the Messiah! I bet that didn’t go over very well! Sometimes God says “no” to our prayers because as a follower of Jesus, sometimes God has a different plan for our life than what we think should happen. Favored by God. We think being favored by God means a new car, a big bank account, and a month-long vacation at the beach. But as we will see today – being favored by God usually means hardship and we will see that when the Angel Gabriel shows up to Mary with a message of “you are favored” but her life would never be easy from that moment on.

Some people believe they are Christians because they prayed a prayer to "receive" Jesus because there is a Bible verse that says to do just that. BUT...that's NOT the whole story. Are we being misled by only hearing a portion of Scripture and not ALL Scripture regarding our salvation?
How did the LDS church start? It seems so odd that 1800 years after Jesus – after the Bible had been put together and people knew it - that anyone would actually believe some guy who comes on the scene with a different message that contradicts the Bible. How did this happen?
How do we act around our Non-Christian friends or coworkers or relatives? Can they see a difference in our life or do we act like everyone else? Today we will see that Abraham’s job was to represent God well when he went to Egypt. But he didn’t and the consequences were heartbreaking. Today we will meet Simeon and Anna - two people who had waited year after year in the Temple to see Jesus the long awaited, prophesied Messiah. We will talk about what it means to wait on God and His timing. Sometimes God asks of us very difficult things and yet we will see that Mary and Joseph continued to push through even though they didn't understand the whole picture.
Today we will see the long awaited birth of the Messiah as Mary and Joseph take a difficult trip to Bethlehem. We will see how God uses the government to fulfill prophecy - moving Mary and Joseph from Nazareth to Bethlehem because that is where Micah in the Old Testament prophesied that Jesus would be born. What we will see is that the Angels do not announce Jesus' birth to the religious men in the temple or the busy people in the town. Instead they show up to lowly Shepherds in the fields where it is quiet and peaceful. These Shepherds- outcasts in society, outcasts in the religious Temple - are the men that God wants to unveil His Son to which is a reminder to us the importance of being quiet long enough to hear what God has to say!
Today we will see a turning point in Peter's life as he comes face to face with who Jesus is and when he recognizes who He is - it will change Peter's life forever. One encounter - a long night of fishing - exhaustion - no fish - and then Jesus shows up and asks Peter to step out one more time - "throw the nets back in the water and see what I can do..." And now Peter has a choice - do what Jesus says and be blessed or walk away. And thankfully for us we get to see the great lessons Peter learned about Jesus as he obeyed and threw his nets back in the water...
Today we will see how John the Baptist begins his ministry of baptizing people. As they go under the water it will represent their old life - one without Jesus living in them. When they are raised up out of the water - this will represent their new life in Christ. - For us -as we are baptized -it will show our family, friends and co-workers that what has happened on the inside will now be shown to the world in an outward sign. Being baptized will show the world that you now align yourself as a true follower of Christ.
Today we will see Jesus as He shows His authority over everything on this earth and in the spiritual realm. We will come face to face with who He is as He casts out demons and heals the sick. What we will learn is that the more we get to know Him for who He is - the less and less we will ever worry or be fearful in this life because we know He controls it all.
Today we will take a break from Luke as we talk about the difficult days when God seems silent. Those days we will call the Ravine. We look at the Christian life as moving from one mountain (when you first become a Christian) to another mountain (when you have learned to trust God) but it is the in between - the Ravine - between the mountains that God does His best work. Those are the days God seems silent, He feels distant, it feels like He doesn't care. But those are the times that we learn the most of about Him when we see His faithfulness through the dark times.
Today we move on to Jesus being led into the wilderness to be tempted by Satan for 40 days. We will learn how one of Satans tactics is to distract us from our mission to serve God. We will learn the difference between tests and temptations and see how Jesus overcame what Satan offered Him.
Today Jesus begins his teaching ministry and as he goes back to his hometown Nazareth he realizes that once again - religious attitudes prevail. As Jesus unveils the truth that He is the Messiah - the long awaited descendant of David - the people in Nazareth would rather murder him than embrace Him. His mission was different than they hoped - they wanted a king to take over the Roman Government - He came to open blind eyes and preach to the poor. Today we will look at the religious culture that Jesus walked into as He began His ministry.
Today we see John the Baptist come on the scene - a very strange man who dresses funny and eats locusts in the desert. But his message is shocking to the religious people of the day - the people who thought they knew God because of their religious background. But then they hear of someone out in the wilderness calling people to repentance - calling people to turn from their sin and turn to God. We will learn that repentance begins with us - with looking within and asking - "is there anything I am doing that goes against what God asks of me?" And with John the Baptist comes a new era - not religion but a relationship with Jesus that begins with repentance.
Today we will embark on a passage in Luke that most people pass right over - the genealogy of Jesus. In here we will see how God uses people regardless of their past. You could have alcoholics, drug addicts, thieves and murderers in your ancestry line and it won't ever matter to God! The genealogy of Jesus shows us that God can use anyone regardless of their past!
Today's lesson in Luke will show us from the life of Levi that we all have a choice: let the sins of our past devastate our future or forget our sinful past and allow God to use us regardless of what we have done. We will see that any sin: murder, adultery, lying, those who suffer from depression, addiction and those who deny Jesus for a season can ALL come back to Him and live a life of service to Him until the day we die...
Today we will continue on as Jesus confronts those in the Nazareth and we will ask the questions: Why do you go to church? Whydo you give money and read your Bible Is it because you want God to love you? If that is your answer - you might be held captive to religion and Jesus wants to FREE you! Jesus doesn't want you to work harder for Him - He wants you to love Him!
Today in Luke we will talk about the one thing that both the leper and Jesus had in common: how they prayed. We will see the importance of bending our wills to the will of God and see that a "no" answer from God always has a purpose behind it. Join us today as we continue on with the story of Jesus and the leper.

Today in Luke we will meet a man by the name of Levi who recognized that when he decided to follow Jesus - everything would change. We will talk about what happens when a person truly comes to Jesus and the life changes that happen because of it...
Today we will talk about religion and ask the question: Are you following a church, a set of rules and regulations or are you following Jesus? There is a really big difference between the two and we will see how Jesus dealt with the religious Pharisees of His day.
Today Jesus continues preaching and teaching and will come in contact with a leper. And what does He do? Runs TO him - not away from him. We will see 2000 years later that screaming "leper" is something we still do today to those like the homeless, addicts, and people we feel are nothing like us...
To be a follower of Jesus we have to determine who He says He is. Was He just a moral person, a great teacher, a compassionate leader? Or was He who He said He was which was...God? Then we will move on to seeing Jesus spending time alone with His Father -much needed time to re-fill His life with all the things needed to continue His mission to save people. What we will learn today is the importance of quality down time spent with God each day.
Today we will see three more men that Jesus choose to be His followers and once again we see how ordinary these men were. James was bold and loveless, John cared more about his status, and Thomas doubted. And these are the men that Jesus picked to be in His inner circle which gives us hope as followers to know that just like Jesus changed them - He can change us too!
Today we will see the kind of men Jesus choose to be His closest disciples and what we will see is how they are ORDINARY just like us!! The men closest to Jesus struggled with the same things we do - things like doubt, denial, and lack of love. Today we will see that many times our greatest strength is also our greatest weakness and how God wants to use us regardless of our personality type!
Today we will see the birth of John the Baptist as his father Zachariah regains the ability to speak again. Because of Zachariah's disbelief when the Angel Gabriel told him he would have a son - God disciplined him with the inability to speak. Today we will talk about God's discipline and how we have choices in our lives - to obey and live a life of peace and contentment or disobey and live with the consequences. Today we see Zachariah open his mouth with praise to God for allowing him to be the father to the man who would introduce the Messiah to a nation in waiting.
As Mary miraculously becomes pregnant with Jesus, she takes a journey to her relative Elizabeth who is 6 months pregnant herself with John the Baptist. Mary needs to be encouraged and Elizabeth is the one to help her through the early days of pregnancy as we see Mary move from anxiety to acceptance. Mary probably spoke of all her earthly concerns with questions like: Will people believe me? How will I tell my fiancé Joseph? Why do I feel like I'm going crazy? What will my dad say? What will the townspeople say? And when Mary leaves Elizabeth she will be encouraged to know that God has a plan and even though it was never what Mary imagined - she will truly be favored by God.
Today we will see the angel Gabriel as he shows up to Mary, a young, poor, teenage girl to let her know that she has been "favored" by God to be the mother of Jesus, the Messiah. We will see the true biblical version of who Mary is - a young girl of 12 or 13 years old. We will see that many times "favored" in the eyes of God means a very difficult life as Mary was about to find out. Suddenly she finds herself pregnant, not married, living in a small town where gossip abounded. But for Mary we see her faith and trust in God at a very young age as she pushes through the difficult days to become the mother of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
After 400 years of silence, today we will see how Zachariah comes in contact with the angel who informs him that he will have a son with his barren wife Elizabeth. This encounter in the temple begins the ministry of John the Baptist - the son of Zachariah and Elizabeth who will be the forerunner to Jesus. Today we will be reminded that God has always controlled history which centers around the birth of Jesus. Zachariah and Elizabeth loved God even though they could never have children so with the announcement that they would have a child - Zachariah is very skeptical which renders him mute until John is born.
Luke is hired by a man named Theophilus to investigate the facts into the life of Jesus. Luke wants to make sure we as Believers in Jesus know what it means to follow Christ. Luke spent his life writing the Gospel of Luke and the book of Acts so that we can contend for our faith.
