What is the difference between a carnal and spiritual mind? Can they be clearly defined? What if any are the advantages / disadvantages of either?

There are many ideas as regards these matters and I would be lying if I said I had it all worked out. That said I do hold a view that I believe answers many questions that arise from the apparent contradictions in many ancient texts , could it be that certain texts are only to be understood by either a carnal or spiritual mind? If so any confusion may simply be the result of using the wrong tool for the job.
