This variant was initially referred to as B.1.1.529, but last Friday the World Health Organisation designated it as a variant of concern naming the strain Omicron. It is of concern because of its mutations and evidence indicates an increased risk of reinfection. The name Omicron – a Greek letter – was assigned to avoid stigmas and any association with the place where it was first located.
