What is a Pyramid?

Pyramids were built long ago in the country of Egypt. In ancient times Egypt was ruled by kings called pharaohs. When one of the pharaoh's died, a giant pyramid was built. This was the pharaohs grave or tomb. About 80 pyramids were built in Egypt.

The people of Egypt put treasures of gold and other precious objects inside the pyramid. They believed that when someone died their body had to be preserved so that the soul could live forever.
