OVERVIEW:  This episode is PART 1 of the “Leading and Managing Remote Teams” webinar that was presented just a couple weeks after California received its shelter-in-place order due to covid-19 and all of a sudden, we were all operating in a new reality… many of us had to relocate most if not all of our administration and our operations out of a physical location and, more specifically, relocated to our homes and places of residence. And while remote work is not a new concept, we wanted to address remote work and the logistical challenges that we were facing.  We also saw very quickly that managers were challenged by knowing how to support their team members during such an urgent, almost emergent, transition. This was also the first webinar hosted by Redding Chamber University, which is a collaboration between the Shasta College Business Training Center and the Redding Chamber of Commerce - it was so timely and the principles and tools discussed in this episode will stand the test of time. We were able to connect with an experienced leader in the remote work space - Mitch Santala. Mitch has been the President of Executive Scheduling Associates - or ESA - for more than a decade. His entire workforce is made up of 140 employees who operate remotely, so we asked him to join us to share some of the foundational principles he implements to successfully operate his business and talk to us a little bit about the difference between leading and managing.
