On this week's episode I'm talking about prolonged grief disorder. When it comes to grieving we all have different paths to follow and many people find ways to cope and move through their loss, over time their symptoms of grief begin to decrease enough to allow them to keep moving forward with their life. However, someone who might be struggling with prolonged grief disorder may feel stuck in their emotional pain so much so that it interferes with their daily life, there's a constant yearning and longing for the person who has died and they have no idea how they will ever get their life back together. Many people and can't figure out what's going on with them and don't realize they have it.--- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/diane81/message

On this week's episode I'm talking about looking for some signs that show you might be avoiding your grief. On a daily basis either consciously or unconsciously we use avoidance in some way shape or form, and we will especially use it when we have to deal with thoughts and feelings that are uncomfortable and cause pain. Many use avoidance when it comes to grief because they may not want or are not prepared to face their heartache so they will try to avoid. However, avoidance doesn't work for us. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/diane81/message
On this week's podcast episode I'm talking about the importance of self-care for caregivers. What do they tell you on an airplane when the oxygen mask comes down in front of you, "please put your own mask on first before assisting anyone else" because, only when we first help ourselves can we effectively help others. And if you are a caregiver and are not taking care of yourself, overtime the physical, emotional, and mental demands of caring for someone can become exhausting which will soon lead to extreme fatigue and burnout, but by taking care of yourself in a healthy way, will help you to be the best caregiver you want to be. There are many ways to approach the grieving process and as we know, everyone approaches grief differently therefore, everyone copes with their grief differently. When I was grieving and felt those intense feelings coming to the surface I knew I had to take a break from my grief and go out for a walk, run, or bike ride which worked wonders for me. However, it's important not to pressure yourself into exercise especially if you aren't the most athletic person or just dread the thought of doing it. On this episode I offer a few suggestions on ways to help you to move your body and the benefits it offers.

I don't know about you, but when I'm on social media some of my favorite feeds are those of animals, and there are so many videos and photos dedicated to our pets and other types of animals. I think most of us just feel good when we are around our furry friends and if you own a dog it gives you the opportunity to get out of the house and be around other people. When you're facing a significant loss, you might want to lean on a pet for some extra support because they love you and just the act of touching, stroking, and hugging, a pet can be calming and offer feelings of comfort and connection.

One of the first steps to healing is to accept, acknowledge, and name your emotions. Sadly, what we learn as a society is not how to work with our feelings but how to avoid them, and most of us do that pretty well. If you try to suppress your pain around loss, then your fighting a losing battle because, those emotions need to be expressed or you can lose it, explode, or have a nervous breakdown. Holding onto and blocking feelings will create symptoms of stress, anxiety, and depression, in turn, that can cause physical problems such as headaches, heart disease, and insomnia, and we don't want that.

At times it can be hard to find the right words to say to a person who is grieving. And when it comes to grief support, words can either heal and connect us or they can shut the griever down and hurt them. It is not helpful to minimize people's grief with statements of comparison, people need to be allowed to express the depth of their grief without feeling that they shouldn't feel as bad as they do.
