The ancient Greeks told of mythical creatures who would serenade sailors toward them, causing their ships to ultimately wreck and sink. We don't see mermaids today, but distractions still abound and if you're not careful, they'll derail your chances of winning.

"Sticks & stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me," may be a phrase we heard as kids, but we know it's not accurate. Words hurt. Many of us are living today below our capabilities because of the words used by someone else long ago.
So how are we as leaders using our words today? Are we looking for opportunities to "catch" people to call them out - or make them better by calling them up?

Even people who may seem effortlessly successful on the outside go through the same kinds of internal struggles as everyone else. Recognizing your power to control parts of your day and to choose consistency in working toward your goals is key to unlocking your full potential. This week, Cleveland Indians Mental Performance Coach Brian Miles talks about being present, quieting the ego, and committing to the challenges you set for yourself.
When Miles is running laps in the morning, it’s always tempting to stop at six instead of doing the full nine around the field, he says. He’s honest when he talks about these small bumps in the road throughout the day because it’s important for people to know they aren’t alone in working past that inner voice that sometimes wants to give up. Taking back your power to achieve means making the choice to win the battle and recognizing that you have a say in your own success. It may feel risky or scary at first, but it ultimately opens up more opportunities in the long run.

For Drew Maddux, head basketball coach at Christ Presbyterian Academy in Nashville, the future is always in the background of his coaching efforts. By keeping a vision of what is possible for his team down the road, he’s able to take a human-centered approach to coaching. Through fostering connections and trust with his players, Maddux reinforces their potential as individuals, both on and off the court.
Building a championship culture starts with all the little things that happen behind the scenes, he says. It’s how players tuck in their shirts, walk onto the court, tie their shoelaces, and interact with their teammates. All of those details work in service of a larger vision for them 10 or 15 years in the future, making it possible to groom leaders by reinforcing good practices and habits every day. “We’re going to hold them accountable and we’re going to make sure there’s a clear understanding that accountability is directly correlated with love, not having an agenda, and wanting what’s best for them as a human being,” he says.

Mindfulness is all about opening yourself up to truly experiencing whatever is happening in the present moment. It’s a word that some people gravitate toward, just as others tend to avoid it. But at its core, it’s about living with your feet on the ground, wherever you are. This week, Dr. Daya Grant, who is a neuroscientist, yoga instructor, and sport psychology consultant, talks about the benefits of taking a deep breath, filtering out the white noise, and focusing on what’s really important.
Dr. Grant says there are ways you can incorporate these tips into your everyday routine to help you hone your focus and put your best foot forward, no matter what life brings your way. For example, you might want to start your day by not looking at your phone. Whether you can hold off for 8 minutes or a whole hour, every bit helps. At the end of the day, perhaps try journaling and writing down the things you’d like to process before you sleep. And before you begin an important task, find a pre-performance routine that works for you, so you’re reading to pay attention without distraction when the time comes.
There's an important mental skill that's often overlooked in its ability to keep you moving forward and handling pressure, obstacles, & the opportunity of today.
Learn it. Embrace it. And practice it to improve how well you compete every day.

Even if you can't do everything you want at the level you want, you can still do something, right? Most people don't do anything because what they can do isn't at the same level they want to do it.
They missed the most important part of growth - you have to start somewhere and the only way to get "there" is by getting better by getting in reps.
So even if you can't do it all today, will you still compete to do something?

There are three options we have for dealing with our thoughts. We can ignore them, challenge them, or delve into them. Learning when to choose each of these approaches is a key component of building helpful self-talk. That can be a game changer for young athletes and others who have to spend a lot of time making decisions and judgment calls in their own heads, which is why learning to do it in a productive way is critical.
This week, Amanda Myrhrberg talks about the importance of useful thought processes and why we should focus on expanding our comfort zone, rather than breaking out of it. She’s the owner of A Game Sport Psychology Consulting, where she uses mental performance training to help young athletes and others “bring their A game.” Her goal is to build confident, comfortable, and thoughtful athletes who know how to face challenges head on and learn to overcome them.

It’s important to find a sense of balance or stability, even at the most unstable points in our lives. This week, RP founder Nick Shaw talks about using free time to work on larger projects and being sure to save time for relaxation and mental recharging to avoid burnout. It isn’t always possible to align your time exactly the way you want to, but by focusing on the things that are in your control, you can start to make better decisions about how to use the hours you have.
There’s always something a little more you could be doing to further your progress toward your goals, Shaw says. Whether it’s doing a few extra reps, rethinking your daily schedule, or reworking your time management, it’s important to look at the options you have and find out what works best for you mentally and physically. If you burn the candle too far at both ends, you can wind up with more work and fewer met goals. But if you get complacent and adopt a victim mentality, you can find yourself lagging behind. Once you find discipline and a work setup that are right for you, you’ll be set to tackle the milestones you set.
Worry and fear are feelings & thoughts based on a future where things don't go our way. We get caught in a trap when we don't practice mindfulness & being in the present.
Don't let worrying about what may not even happen be what keeps you from working toward becoming a winner.

Oftentimes, people look forward, wondering what opportunities might be just over the horizon, rather than seeking out connections and partnerships they have access to right now. It’s OK to take a leap into the unknown, but don’t forget to find ways of helping out those around you, too. There may be surprising opportunities that stem from those conversations, says this week’s guest, podcaster and coach Ben Newman.
As soon as you finish listening to today’s show, Newman has a challenge for you. Based on your experience and relationships, what are the five phone calls you could make right now that have the potential to connect you to the future you desire? Write down the people’s names and phone numbers. When you get in touch, find out what you can do to help them — what value you can add to their mission. It’s a simple way of putting in the work today to reach your goals tomorrow.

“There is no glory in struggle,” says Nataly Kogan, Founder and CEO of Happier. Everyone faces challenges in life and has to overcome different types of adversity, but how we choose to do that can have a great impact on the outcome. This week, Kogan shares strategies for building mental and emotional fitness, and finding ways to thrive and grow, instead of just surviving.
When she was 13, Kogan and her family moved to the United States from Russia as refugees. She came from a tradition where struggling was considered good, and where suffering was accepted as a necessary component of finding success. By the time she was 35, she was in the midst of burnout and needed to rethink her approach to life and work. She made the choice to focus on emotional fitness and wellbeing and has learned to reframe struggles as challenges. Now, she shares those skills with others hoping to be effective leaders and find happiness and contentment in their own lives.

Every morning, Jessica Ream starts the day with a little, personal happy dance. She puts on a song to get her pumped and thinks: “Today is going to be a good day and we’re going to attack the day.” Other people might prefer to meditate, write in a journal, or repeat a motto to themselves. “When you start the day off like that, then (with) any challenges that arise throughout the day, you’re going to, hopefully, keep that same mindset,” she says.
Ream is a mental performance consultant who has worked with the U.S. Army and now runs her own consulting business. This week, she talks about the importance of routine and the power of having a growth mindset. No matter what bumps in the road you face, you can overcome them if you frame them as challenges, rather than unsolvable problems, she says. That approach also gives you the flexibility to handle the changes that will inevitably come your way, so you can always come out stronger than you were before.

The year 2020 was full of uncertainty. For Mickey Ahrens, the start of the coronavirus pandemic brought with it serious questions about what he wanted his future to look like. After being furloughed from his job, he founded Tough Minds, which seeks to help people develop mental toughness and bring mindset training programs into the home.
In recent years, words like “mindfulness” have been making their way into the mainstream. But some folks may be unsure about how it applies to them or their kids. For Ahrens, building strong-minded individuals, who are self-aware and able to understand their place on a team, helps athletes learn skills they can use outside of sports, too. It’s never too late to begin learning mental toughness and resilience, he says. We can always get better if we keep moving forward, no matter what adversity comes our way.

Not all confidence is created equal. There’s the kind you get from positive engagement on social media, for example, and the kind that’s built through learning something new, and challenging yourself to adapt to changing situations. That’s one of the key messages from this week’s guest, mental performance coach Ceci Clark. She spent years working with Army Special Operations and later, the Cleveland Indians, and says that stepping into uncomfortable moments is what makes us feel truly alive.
It’s important to foster a willingness and ability to challenge yourself. That’s because life won’t always go exactly the way you hope it will, or follow the steps you’ve planned for. It often forges its own unexpected path forward, and it’s up to you to be able to learn and evolve alongside it. It’s OK to feel nervous or unsure, she says, because the most important thing is what you do with those feelings. Do you turn back or give up when things get tough? Or do you make the choice to pull yourself forward and keep going?

We fail to maintain momentum toward our long-term goals when our focus is in the wrong place. It’s the same with many of our struggles. Our focus helps influence our fate.
Our focus – and where we choose to place it – will determine our ability to build our grit and maintain the necessary work to achieve our long-term goals.
In today’s episode, Jake shares five steps we can use to keep our focus on our long-term goals.

There are four types of managers in every company: the removed manager, the buddy manager, the controller, and the mentor. For employees, there are two characteristics that can make or break a working relationship. The first is standards. In order to grow, managers need to have expectations. But are they able to walk the walk, or just talk the talk? The second is connection. Are they able to empathize with their employees? These are some of the questions we talk about with this week’s guest, author and Undercover Millennial Clint Pulver.
He’s spent the last several years interviewing employees candidly about their experiences working for different companies. The one thing that comes up again and again is it’s all about the management. As a manager, you’re the No. 1 reason employees stay or go. That’s why it’s important to understand your style and work to continually improve. Pulver says the magic happens when people become mentor managers. If you’re able to have high standards and good, empathetic connections, you can build a workplace that people won’t want to leave.

The faster you think, the faster you play. This is why athletes train religiously on basic footwork & drills so that it becomes instinctive. It’s why coaches try to make complex gameplans simple to digest & execute. The more you think about something, the slower you are to act.
Same goes with our life.
Unless we learn to identify 3 key things, our decision-making process – and the time it takes us to get our goals – takes longer.

It wasn’t a choice for Karen Cogan to stop competing in gymnastics. When a knee injury ended her athletic career, she had to find a new way to engage with sports. She decided to pursue sports psychology and for many years now, has worked with the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Teams. She uses her own struggle transitioning out of athletics to inform the way she guides other athletes through the challenges of their sports careers.
Something Cogan learned when she started working with Olympic athletes was that there is perhaps more disappointment and grief than you might expect. While we often see the joy and ecstasy of the gold medal win in the spotlight, there are countless athletes who compete and never see a medal. Being a high level athlete means learning how to cope with defeat and find a way to stand back up and regain confidence even when times are tough.

Even when an outcome is unexpected, don’t forget to give yourself credit for trying to accomplish your goals in the first place. “This year has been challenging for everybody and sometimes, you have to give yourself a little bit of a break,” says Micha Shaw, mindfulness coach and retired competitive swimmer. This week, Shaw talks about the process of coming to terms with things that have happened in the past, and how mindfulness and resilience practice can better prepare you for what’s to come in the future.
When Shaw moved from Alaska to California for school, it was a big change full of opportunity. She began swimming competitively and found herself facing off against poolside champs. It was intimidating at first, she says, but she soon learned not to let that get the better of her. After college, she got into open water swimming. Within two years, she’d gone from novice to nationally-ranked. But, when she competed for an Olympic spot at the world championships, she fell short. It took her a long time to understand that experience and now, she helps others learn to focus on the process, rather than just the outcome, and appreciate the little things along the way.

For Mike Deegan, the move back to coaching from the corporate world just made sense. His instincts told him he needed to return to education and spend his time serving others. He’s spent the last two decades coaching collegiate baseball, and has watched his teams take three national championships. Over the last six years, he’s also written a book and become a high performance speaker, writer, and coach on the side. This week, Deegan shares tips for building strong teams and says sometimes, you just have to follow your gut.
Currently, his team follows a set of pillars — or core values — that they believe help them succeed as individuals and as a whole. Those include practicing gratitude, seeking continuous improvement, and celebrating other people’s wins. By learning to push yourself hard and find joy in recognizing that others are doing the same, you can gain self-awareness and encourage it in others. Ultimately, that creates a culture of always striving for more and being willing to put in the work to get there.

One of the biggest traps leaders face is the busy trap. We’re constantly busy working on projects, helping our team, and going going going, but we rarely are calling a timeout to make sure that what we’re busy with is helping make the company or team better.
We must exercise better control of our day in order to effectively compete for the goals we want to reach.
Besides, who wants to always be busy spinning your tires in place when you could be racing that nice car around the track?
Learn five things I started doing to intentionally be more effective in my endeavors - and how you can too.
For Brian Kight, unflinching realism and relentless optimism are like the two rails of a train track. Without either one, the train can’t move forward. For some people, taking a long, hard look at realism is a challenge. For others, it’s easy to get stuck in the rut of pessimism. But while many may feel these forces are in opposition, Kight says the ability to be realistic and optimistic helps you cut through excuses and take control of the decisions you make.
They are also two of the core principles of the DMGB mindset, which stands for “Doesn’t Matter, Get Better.” Regardless of what challenges you face, or how motivated you are or aren’t, you can make the choice to bring your best every day. It’s not about following your passion, Kight says, it’s about bringing your passion with you to everything you do. You have the power to hold yourself to the same high standards no matter what the task at hand is, and use your energy day in and day out. By making the right choices and holding yourself accountable, you can build the discipline you need to bring value to your work.

Don't let the pursuit of that goal keep you from making time to identify who you want to become - and doing the necessary work to forge yourself into them.
For Alex Auerbach, it’s all about the people. As the director of wellness and development for the Toronto Raptors, Auerbach spends his days building a strong workplace culture and supporting resilience and mental performance among players, coaches, and staff. Being able to make a tangible difference in people’s lives has always been appealing to him, he says. By helping those he works with develop the skills and tools they need to be successful in both sports and life, he’s able to follow his passion daily.
Looking back on the different organizations he’s worked with over the years, the one thing each and every one of the successful teams had in common was that they took a people-centered approach. It’s important to spend time getting to know the people you’re working with, Auerbach says. While it’s natural to enter into professional and personal relationships with goals in mind, it’s critical to set those aside and co-create a relationship that’s beneficial to all.

Jake Thompson shares four key steps to better utilizing social media as a tool to learn, consume, & create in order to make better impacts.
What does your team notice first? It's important as a leader to understand how your actions tell a bigger story than your verbal orders ever could.
Brett Price knows the importance of sticking with something he’s passionate about. From the time he was a student himself, he’s known he wanted to work in baseball. So, he found the best people to learn from and worked his way up to becoming the strength and conditioning coach for the baseball program at the University of Alabama. Now, he passes along the lessons he’s learned to the students he works with both on and off the field.
It’s important to create a culture of dedication on a team and that comes from having standards, Price says. He defines a standard as what is required of a person regardless of how they feel on any particular day. By letting his players know that the best is expected from them every day, from the moment they walk in the door, they understand their commitment to the team is important. And by using a top-down approach and modeling that behavior for them, his players understand that he cares about them and is willing to do what it takes to help them succeed.

“One day I’m gonna...” Too many people talk & post about what they’ll do “one day.” Can the results of the work you’ve put in tell the story of you? Talk is cheap. Social media isn’t always reality. We need more people to BE about the work so that their results speak for them.

Sebastian Little says his life’s purpose is to create spaces for full self-expression and play. Understanding what makes individuals tick and how to use those motivations in service of their larger goals is a key component of his current work as a mental performance coach. This week, he shares his thoughts on the responsibility of leadership and the importance of giving yourself time and space to reflect on important moments in your life.
Over the years, Little has had to learn to synthesize his environment -- to take in all the stimuli and information -- and then consolidate the pieces that are actually important. From there, it’s possible to discard the things that are holding him back. It’s been a long road to learn how and why this process is important, and has taken moments of deeply personal reflection. But now, he shares his journey with others in the hopes of helping them find their own path forward.

We all want the glory and awards that come with success, but unless you're focused on building your block of ice where no one is watching, you'll never shine where everyone is.
Leaders set the tone, energy, & standard for others so they have a benchmark with which to rise up to.
There are three things that always hold true for teams: they all struggle, they all have untapped talent, and most of them haven’t defined their success. That’s where Maureen Monte steps in. With a background in corporate team building and a commitment to seeing young athletes succeed, she has found her place helping others reach their full potential. This week, she talks about leadership and team development and shares tips for finding success in sports, work, and everyday life.
Monte has dedicated her life to facilitating these types of conversations among young athletes and employees alike. But while sports teams, especially, might define success as winning a particular championship or game, that’s not what defines the word for Monte herself. “I want them to win at the long game of life,” she says. She hopes the skills they learn now will serve them well whether they pursue athletics, the corporate world, or college down the line.

We're celebrating Christmas with a special episode about the most important gift you can give heading into 2021.
For Dartmouth Coach Spencer Brown, it comes down to owning your results. As both player and coach, you have the choice to put in whatever effort you can to build a strong framework for success. It doesn’t matter how tired you are, or if you’re facing a challenge in your life, so long as when you’re at practice or in a game, you try your best. In this week’s episode, Brown talks about leadership qualities, personal empowerment, and making competition fun, both in sports and in everyday life.
Being a coach is about more than just the short time you see your players every day, he says. It’s about instilling values in them and empowering them to make good choices on their own time from morning until night. If they can learn positive habits and decision-making skills in sports, they can carry those forward into their future relationships and pursuits. No detail is too small to ignore, he says. From warm-up to the end of practice, and even the moments they spend at home, every minute counts.

All children are different. They have their own interests and hobbies, and their own unique dreams they want to pursue when they grow up. Some kids will choose to continue playing sports as they get older, while others will take a different path. That’s why it’s important to listen to them as they grow and share with you what makes them happy and fulfilled. This week, Asia Mape, founder of I Love To Watch You Play, shares tips on cultivating a healthy enjoyment of sports in kids of all ages.
There will be plenty of time for athletes to focus on the competitive rigours of the game as they move up to higher levels. But for kids to want to stick with sports, they have to have fun doing it. As parents, it’s important to keep that in mind as you encourage them. Sometimes, it will be up to you to step in and advocate for your child, so they carry the love of playing forward into the future. It all comes down to leading by example and making small changes along the way that add up in the end to positive results.

For Iowa State Associate Head Volleyball Coach Jen Malcom, sports have been a lifelong passion. As a child, she played softball, basketball, volleyball, and did track. She also watched her own parents coach team sports. When she was in college, she learned from their example and started to coach, as well as play. The shift taught her to see the game from a different perspective when she was challenged to explain new things and bring together players in a group that works together well and can rely on one another.
This week, she shares tips for building strong teams and supporting players from varying backgrounds. It’s important to have a thick skin, she says, and learn to roll with the punches. You also have to be proud of what you accomplish and put your all into learning and growing with the game. And finally, as a coach, you have to understand how you can impact the lives of the players you work with. Taking responsibility for your potential and accountability for your actions can make all the difference, whether you’re on the court or behind the team.

Many people mistakenly believe that “competing every day” requires you to buy into the hustle & grind, GO-GO-GO culture that says there are no off-days in life.
Contrary to that idea, you can’t actually compete at your best unless you learn to rest. “Competing” isn’t about working out daily or grinding in your business 24/7.
It’s about working every day to improve on the day before – mentally as much as physically.
Be reminded about this important truth to rest & how it allows us to lead better & be at our best for those we serve.
Life is a journey, not a destination. Discover why Competitors are always focused on "becoming" vs. trying to "arrive."

Especially in a challenging year like 2020, it can be tough to identify all the things you are grateful for. But the same adversity can also help set the stage for recognizing the good in your life and the support structures that have helped you along the way. This week, Dr. Nicole Gabana talks about the importance of gratitude and why it’s key to performance in both sports and everyday life.
Gratitude has the power to positively impact our mental health and happiness, and it’s a skill that can be practiced daily. Gabana says sometimes people get stuck thinking that they have to feel a certain way — especially happy or grateful, or something else — in order to start gratitude practice. But that’s not the case. Spending a little time every evening writing a list of all the good things that happened during the day is enough to get you started. And then, by modeling gratitude for others, you can start to change the culture around you, just by changing yourself.

"Yet" is one of the most powerful words you can use to remind your brain that you may not be where you want to be now, but you're on your way.
The journey to success is difficult.

For Lauren Sisler, laying the groundwork for better outcomes in life always begins with a single first step. Sometimes we have a choice about when that happens, and sometimes we don’t. But one step is all it takes to head in a new direction. This week, Sisler shares her story of moving from gymnast to broadcast sports reporter and the pivotal moments that led her to where she is today.
One of the most critical moments happened when Sisler was a freshman in college. She received a call from her father saying her mother had just died. By the time she got home, her father had passed away, too. After their deaths, she realized that change is a constant and it’s up to each person to decide how and when they start to adapt. Now, she uses her experiences to help others who may be struggling to give or receive support.

For Lauren Johnson, there’s no time like the present. If you want to change your past or build a better future, it all starts today, she says. The decisions you make here and now are the ones that will help or hinder you on a regular basis. This week, Johnson, who is a mental conditioning coordinator for the Yankees, shares her tips for deciding to change, recommitting, and holding yourself accountable. It all starts one choice at a time.
“Everything we do exists in the present moment,” she says. “Our mind is the only thing able to exist in all three — past, present, and future.” For that reason, it’s critical to practice the behaviors and mindsets that work in service of your goals. By envisioning the identity you want, you can choose to become it. It may mean being uncomfortable or going outside your comfort zone. It may mean feeling fear or uncertainty. But it’s in those challenges and the way you respond to them that growth happens.

It's easy to make the excuse that if we aren't motivated, taking a day off is ok.
In reality, Champions make sure that every day is the day they take a step forward.

For author and podcaster Brian Levenson, one of the most under-appreciated question words is “when.” That’s because knowing when to shift between different mindsets and frameworks is just as critical as the skills it takes to do so. For example, elite performers of all types find success through understanding when it’s time to prepare and when it’s time to perform. Then, they can adapt how they are thinking about each situation to match what they need to achieve in that moment.
This week, Levenson returns to the show to discuss his new book and why he chose to focus on mindset shift as a key piece of the process puzzle. For many people, it can be easy to get stuck spending too much time and effort on either preparation or performance. They forget that it’s a combination of the two, along with a healthy dose of practice, that is a recipe for success. It’s crucial for people to take a mental inventory every once in a while and then put the time into making up for whatever they’re not doing enough of.

Is your decision to take action every day determined by your current position - or your long-term commitment?
Most people stay in neutral because they justify if they can't do "everything," there's no sense in doing anything. It's the same reason they fail to reach their goals - there's always an excuse as to why they can't get the work done.
In this new podcast episode, speaker Jake Thompson challenges you with the truth that even if you can't do everything you want today, there's always at least one thing you can do to get better.

For Matt Kjell, it’s all about family. Since the start of this year, he’s gotten married and is now expecting a child. But he hasn’t always felt the future looked so bright. Back in 2018, his father received a surprising cancer diagnosis and passed away shortly thereafter. It shook Kjell’s foundations and sent him into a spiral of unhealthy choices. One day, he woke up, looked around, and asked himself a crucial question: Is this what I want my life to look like? His answer was a resounding “no.”
This week, Kjell shares his story about finding the path back to health and wellness, and about the importance of family. He had always looked to his father, and his grandfather before that, as examples of what it means to work hard and provide a good life for their kids. Now, Kjell is following in their footsteps and using their drive as motivation in his own life, so he can continue their legacy with the next generation.

Individuals have the power to influence entire organizations. That’s why it’s critical for leaders, coaches, players, and coworkers to invest in personal development and making connections in order to have successful outcomes. This week, Colin Cerniglia, CEO and founder of the Talent 409 Leadership Academy, talks about building a culture of excellence in sports, business, and life, and why digging deeper than surface level is a key component.
He draws many of his stories from the cultural shifts of the New York Yankees. Cerniglia has long been a fan of the team, but became interested in the Yankees’ team dynamics and how they’ve changed over time. He explores that history in his new book, which shows that the example set by team leaders can have a profound effect on everyone and on the way the group works together to achieve their goals.

“Be curious, not furious.” That was something Anna Hennings’ mother used to tell her growing up. In essence, it means that it’s better to be curious about the mistakes you make, rather than just being angry that you made them. That’s because mistakes are a great way to learn and grow, if you see them as an opportunity, rather than a failure. This saying now serves as a cornerstone of Hennings’ understanding of building a growth mindset and is something she passes on to the people she works with on a daily basis.
Hennings is a mental performance coach who predominantly works with volleyball players and more specifically, those transitioning from indoor volleyball to beach volleyball. But while she has a focus area, the lessons she learned in sports and now uses in her practice are applicable throughout life and work, she says. For example, it can be helpful for players to practice self-compassion through self-kindness, understanding common humanity, and mindfulness. But those same skills are invaluable in the workplace and at home for finding ways to continue on the path of personal development and happiness.

Dre Baldwin wasn’t always the most talented player on his team. But what he always had was a love of competition, a strong drive to succeed, and a healthy dose of discipline. After a later start to his basketball career, he went on to play professionally overseas and then returned home to start his own business. In the years since he graduated, he’s built a name for himself as an author, speaker, and YouTube role model. This week, Baldwin talks about the power of trusting the process and putting in the work that will lead to success on and off the court.
You have to build a strong foundation and push yourself to visualize how you plan on reaching your goals, Baldwin says. One of the ways Baldwin did that in his own life was to focus on who he surrounded himself with. For example, in order to get better at school sports, he played one-on-one with the best players on his team. Even though they usually scored more points, he learned from playing against them regularly. Not only did those games help him build confidence, they helped him learn new skills from people who did them well. By working on strengthening his foundation, he was able to find success in the long-term.

To be a leader is to have the ability to impact other people’s lives. It’s not about the title, the status, or the amount of money you make; it’s about being a positive influence on those around you. That’s why it doesn’t just appear in the boardroom. There are leaders everywhere — even in the most unexpected places. This week, podcast host and author Jason Romano talks about the importance of servant leadership and how understanding people’s unique value makes a better team.
He shares personal stories of his time working at ESPN as a talent producer and in other roles. One of his most pivotal moments came when a job he wanted went to the other finalist instead of him. It was a moment that underscored the importance of humility and of supporting others in success. It was also a chance to see disappointment as a path to new opportunity, which he has carried with him ever since.

It can be easy to get stuck in a mental prison where your outlook on life focuses on your fears and insecurities, rather than your potential. It takes self-awareness and a willingness to challenge your inner voice to break free of these internal weights holding you down. This week, author and mental architect Lucas Jadin talks about the power of mental preparation and resiliency and how to commit to unpacking the mental side of life.
Too often, people try to fix internal problems with external solutions. While they may provide a temporary distraction, they will never lead to a long-term resolution. That’s why it’s critical to find the root of these problems, so they can be fixed where they start. It means coming to terms with sometimes long-held fears and insecurities, but the payoff is a life that can fill the space left when you are free of limitations.

For Ryan Hawk, learning the importance of practice and patience came at an early age. When he was 14 and a freshman in high school, he never expected to play on his school’s varsity football team. He spent months training hard and learning from the best. When the first game of the year came around, he was put on the field and ultimately threw the game-winning touchdown pass. Looking back, he realized it was the work he’d put in ahead of time that led to this early success.
It was a lesson he took with him when he transitioned away from football after college and into the business world. He sought out mentors and learned from their example. Now, he’s a successful entrepreneur, author, and podcast host who has dedicated his life to sharing his love of learning with others. This week, he talks about the importance of a strong work ethic, investment in the people around you, and why time well spent in advance leads to good outcomes down the road.

For Jon Gordon, life has been a journey and faith has been at the core of it all. In his early 30s, he entered into a time of questioning and exploration. It led him to read about different religions and types of spirituality and by the time he was in his mid-30s, he decided he wanted to get baptized. Through these varied experiences, Gordon learned to identify his core purpose in life, which he says is crucial for thoughtful decision-making.
You have to know what you stand for, know what you’re here to do, and understand your purpose and principles in order to make decisions that align with your goals and priorities. Distractions may try to pull away your focus, so it’s important to let go of thoughts and tasks that don’t support your journey forward. That means picking your battles and your moments to shine. Understand when it’s better not to enter into a debate or when it’s beneficial to voice your opinion. Once you understand the ideals that guide you, the path forward becomes much clearer.

For Jim Hensel, it all came down to one very important conversation. Facing a challenging time with his work and family, he found himself in the car with his uncle one day. His uncle told him it was time to take responsibility for his life and where it had gone. It was the spark that lit the fire for Hensel and set him on the path toward accountability and self-determination. Shortly thereafter, he wrote down his Strength and Honor Code, which he now lives by, and started to work with children.
All together, these experiences helped to ground Hensel in what matters, which is a strength he now works with others to develop. He had to understand his purpose and figure out what he actually believed in. Then, he had to find a way to represent those beliefs in a true and authentic manner. And finally, he had to develop his own personal mission statement that would help guide him. By truly owning his place in life and understanding what he wanted to get out of it, he could stop scrambling to figure out what to do next and instead, put his effort into achieving his goals.

Moving mountains starts with a single rock. For Lindsey Wilson, visualizing the future she wants to create is what helps her prepare for the monumental task of getting there. A former professional basketball player and current full-time entrepreneur and mom, Wilson has relied on mindfulness work on and off the court for decades. This week, she shares tips for building a positive mindset, even in a time as uncertain as now.
For many people, it’s easy to fall into the trap of letting life happen to them and be a victim of circumstance. But it’s possible to take the wheel in your life and progress, Wilson says. By understanding that you are in control of your own thoughts, you can start to make your mind work for you. It’s a deep dive inside yourself, she says, but the journey leads to a stronger, more resilient version of yourself.

For John Wooley, the journey from posting a few CrossFit memes on an Instagram account to having more than 250,000 followers on his now-iconic fitness satire page was a surprising one. He says he’s always been able to find humor in things, but never expected something personal to gain such a large and widespread following. And now that he’s found his voice, he says it’s important for him to use it.
He’s used his page to talk about everything from COVID and depression to racism and George Floyd, all while staying true to his original thread of memes that take the mickey out of coaches, fitness tropes, and gym life. “If you figure out your joke or whatever it may be, and then you take it to its most absurd point, you can almost talk about anything,” he says. The success of his first platform has since led to the creation of a podcast and YouTube channel. Looking back, Wooley says if his humor or willingness to talk about serious topics has helped even just a single person have a better time, the journey has been worth it.

For Tola Ogunlewe, the only thing that’s certain is that at some point, things will change. Whether it’s this year, next year, or a decade down the line, something will shift the course of your life. Whether or not you’re prepared for that change can make all the difference in how successful and satisfied you are once it happens. This week, Ogunlewe talks about transitioning in and out of sports and shares his thoughts on preparing for the future to find fulfillment both on and off the court.
It’s important to understand how the game works, he says. That means coming to terms with the fact that you may play for 20 or 25 years, but probably won’t play professionally for 40 or 50. What will you do after? What skills do you have to put to work once your time as a player is up? It’s a mental exercise to start while you’re still in the game. When you reach the professional level, everyone you’re competing with used to be the best in their hometowns. What sets you apart from them? What makes you unique? Learning to see what you bring to the table is a valuable lesson that will put you on the path to reaching your fullest potential, no matter what the future has in store.

Grant Parr defined himself as an athlete. For years, he played every sport he could; he was a quarterback, ran track and field, played baseball, and more. But when he was in college, an injury threw his life off course. He gave up sports and for decades, avoided walking down memory lane. He wanted to keep the past in the past and not revisit the games he felt he couldn’t play anymore. In his late 30s, he had a hip replacement which led to complications and left him disabled. He ended up in a doctor’s office again, but this time something was different. The doctor told Parr that when he finished his final procedure, he’d be “running into life.”
He took months to emotionally and mentally prepare himself for the surgery and when it was over, his first words off the table were, “I’m back.” Now in his 40s, Parr is helping others develop the growth mindset he learned to foster in himself. He’s an author and speaker and someone who doesn’t let challenges get in his way anymore. He shares tips for how to mentally manage the COVID-19 pandemic and find opportunities for creativity and new pursuits by staying present in the moment, even as the future is unpredictable.

From his humble beginnings in Pennsylvania to his successful acting career in Hollywood, Dan Cortese has walked many different paths in life. He worked the graveyard shift at a steel mill to put himself through college and left home to pursue the California dream. He landed a job as the host of MTV Sports and later became a well-known side character on the popular show, Seinfeld. He’s since written a book documenting his journey and looking at the power of positivity. This week, he shares his story of growth and change and reminds us to always be grateful for the opportunities we have.
He recalls a moment at the steel mill when he considered dropping out of college. He wasn’t sure how his future would look or if he’d find success in acting. A coworker reminded him that in going to college, he was already in the process of achieving something others worked hard to get. He took the lesson to heart and moved across the country to reach his goals. After gaining popularity on television, he once again had to reevaluate the direction his life had taken. Now, his goal is simple, but valuable: to be a little bit better each day.

The way to success is focus and consistency. You have to put in the work, day in and day out, with clear goals in mind. That’s a lesson from this week’s guest, author, entrepreneur, and Crossfit champ Jason Khalipa. He shares his story of growing a company and becoming one of the fittest men in the world. After his daughter was diagnosed with leukemia, Khalipa had to re-center himself and his goals and learn to slow down and truly appreciate being focused in the moment.
Being in the moment means concentrating your effort on whatever you are doing. When you find yourself with your feet in too many places at once, you can lose your grounding. By making sure you go all in on one task at a time — even just for 10 minutes a day — you can do that task to the best of your ability and build routines that will last over time. It often means giving up control and learning to delegate responsibilities to others on your team. But by doing that, you also give them the chance to build their own skills and flourish. It’s a win-win.

How you carry yourself as a leader can affect every facet of your team. Whether you’re a doctor, a manager, a team captain, or in another leadership role, your attitude and approach will shape the way your superiors, employees, and co-workers interact with each other and you. This week, retired CIA intelligence officer Marc Polymeropolous talks about building strong leadership skills and finding clarity in times of uncertainty. It’s about being motivated to work for the collective good and building up trust and accountability over time.
It’s easy to lead the way when the path ahead is clear, Polymeropolous says. But the path is rarely clear. There will be times when you and your team are under stress or facing challenges, both large and small. It’s in those moments that a leader has to show confidence. And it’s in the times leading up to those challenges that a leader has to be honest and take responsibility, so there is cohesion when it’s needed the most.

One of the messages Colin Bado wants everyone to hear is that it’s OK to need help sometimes. Everyone experiences challenging moments in life. For some people, it may come in the form of longstanding mental health issues. For others, it may be a single experience that brings them to their lowest point. Part of learning to build a good relationship with yourself is knowing when you can’t do it on your own. This week, Bado shares his thoughts on making it through the tough times and finding ways to see the light at the end of the tunnel.
Several years ago, Bado found himself in one of his darkest moments. At the time, he says he was having suicidal ideation. His loved ones intervened and helped him find the assistance he needed to get back on his feet. Now, he’s working to provide structure and hope to young people who may be in a similar mindset. The coronavirus pandemic is putting pressure on everyone and changing lives in unpredictable ways. In this timely conversation, Bado talks about holding onto hope, practicing gratitude, and finding opportunities in unexpected places.

Something that many athletes and top performers have in common is a story of overcoming adversity. For former New York City firefighter and elite athlete Matt Long, personal challenges have shaped the course of his life. In 2005, Long was hit by a bus. He spent weeks in a coma and months in the hospital, where he endured several surgeries. When he got out of the hospital, he found the mental part of recovery was just as challenging.
Long had to find a way to accept the ways in which his life had changed. Prior to the accident, he had been an avid runner. After the accident, his gait was off and his body had changed, so he turned to indoor rowing and other strength exercises. He found a new avenue to elite athleticism through tenacity, perseverance, and mental fortitude. He also had to learn not to let pride get in the way. He asked for help when he needed it, which gave him the support and tools that helped him blaze a new path forward. This week, he shares tips on overcoming challenges and learning from them to be better prepared for tomorrow.

Learning to recognize the things that are holding you back can be a helpful tool step toward making meaningful change in your life. Even if you have 100 good habits that you practice, just a single bad habit can hinder the effectiveness of all the rest. This week, author and psychology professor Amy Morin shares tips for working through challenges and building the mental strength you need to reach your full potential.
Morin draws on her own experiences with hardship; they have informed the work she’s done in the years since. When she was in her mid-20s, both her mother and her husband passed away suddenly and unexpectedly. She was left having to find ways to stay mentally strong while also processing her grief. At times, she found it easier to think about what she didn’t have to do, rather than list all the things she should do. That led to a blog post which paved the way to her first book, 13 Things Mentally Strong People Don’t Do.

There are many things that have become unsettled in our world. Our daily routines have changed and some opportunities we may have had a few months ago have been put on hold, while others have arisen through the changes. This week, Arizona Diamondbacks Mental Skills Coordinator Zach Brandon talks about the benefits of practicing mindfulness and intentionality, and shares ideas on how to return to a centered place even when the storm is at its strongest.
It begins with a simple tenet of sports — you have to make sure you’re paying attention to the right thing at the right time. Especially in times of change, it’s important to find a way to pause and take stock of where you are, and then adjust your focus. It doesn’t matter if that change is a large life shift or just the transition from work to home in your everyday routine, there’s value in re-centering before you move to something new. Often, our minds can work against us when we get stuck on what’s happened in the past or worry about what’s to come. By acknowledging and accepting the changes, we can find a way to enter into the new space with intentionality and focus. It doesn’t make the challenges disappear, but it can make them easier to navigate.

The realm of sports is ripe for teaching young people and athletes important skills they can use and put to work for the rest of their lives. For coaches, it takes being able to turn words like “character” and “competition” into behaviors and traits that athletes can see and feel. Once those ideas become tangible, they can be learned and developed.
This week, author and teacher Dr. Ralph Pim shares ideas for breaking down critical concepts into teachable and adoptable life lessons.
Dr. Pim started his career coaching youth sports. Over the years, he worked his way to college coaching and ultimately, to West Point, where he became the director of competitive sports for the entire military academy.
At West Point, all cadets are also athletes; it’s a mandate of the school which early on, recognized the benefits of sports experience in building great leaders. Now an international leadership consultant and educator, he’s sharing what he both learned and developed at West Point about shaping athletes into well-rounded and persevering people in all aspects of their lives.

Patrick Allmond is a fan of the phrase, “done is better than perfect.” That’s because actually doing something, even if it’s not done perfectly, is more productive than spending your time worrying it will be wrong.
Allmond calls the tendency we have to get stalled out while trying to make decisions analysis paralysis. This week, he shares tips for overcoming this inability to choose and learning to move forward and make the most of each day.
It’s easy to get stuck on repeat in our heads worrying that we don’t know what to do. We spend hours, days, even weeks trying to plan out the smallest details and weighing one option over another. Allmond says taking a single small step every day is what we have to do to keep moving.
Even if our path takes twists and turns along the way, we’ll still get there eventually. If we never take the first step, though, we’ll stay trapped in the same place as time passes us by. So, make the choice, take the step, and walk into tomorrow with purpose.

If you want to make real and lasting change in your work environment, you have to start from a place of clarity about your actual situation. You have to understand where you are at relative to your company’s mission and what things are in your control to change for better outcomes.
This week, author and speaker David Burkus shares ideas for finding what your team will fight for, and understanding the stakes that show why that fight is necessary.
“There is a bad future that will happen and a good future that will happen, and we’re actually in control of that based on how seriously we take it,” Burkus says.
Oftentimes, companies talk about the idea of purpose, instead of a fight. While purpose focuses on something positive that teams can work together to create, a fight demonstrates the stakes and gives teams the challenge they need for bonding and motivation.
It’s a rallying cry, he says, that brings together every member of the group in service of something greater.

Emotional intelligence is key to living a balanced and healthy life. It means learning to understand and manage your own emotions and the emotions of those around you. It takes introspection and space to get in touch with your own needs and pace.
This week, sports management professional, author, and keynote speaker Will Baggett talks about showing up ready to give your best and taking a step back when you need to adjust.
Especially during challenging moments — like this one — it can be tempting to fall into easy routines just to get by. But research has shown that how we present ourselves, even during times of transition or upheaval, affects how we think and act.
That’s why it’s important to be mindful, and always ask what you could be doing to add value to wherever you’re at at any given point in time. What you put in will shape what you, and others, get out. So, strive for contentment, not complacency, and take opportunities as they come.

Even through times of great uncertainty, there are things individuals and businesses can do to ensure they have strong foundations.
This week, business growth, sales, and leadership expert Meridith Elliott Powell talks about the power of people and shares tips for creating a sustainable and growth-oriented platform through investing in the people that drive your business.
Your competition can do what you can do; they can make what you can make. The only real difference between you and them is your network and your reputation in the marketplace. That’s why it’s critical to give your employees the chance to learn and grow over time and surround yourself with people you can learn from. Within your business, it’s important to think about long-term viability.
One of the ways to work toward that is to build succession into every level of your business. That way, even when there’s upheaval as we’ve seen during the coronavirus pandemic, there will always be someone who can step into other roles and keep continuity for your brand.

That’s the key message from this week’s guest, Dr. Paul Arciero. Years of study and research led him to create the PRISE lifestyle, which is based on living a healthy and whole life.
What you eat and how you move and use your body shape the way you live in the world. They influence your emotional and mental wellbeing and even how you interact with the people closest to you. It can be tough to change the habits you have to get on track to living well.
That’s why it’s important to figure out what value being healthy has for you. Defining its worth and meaning can help you get into the right mindset to change your habits and start living up to your full potential.

Times are tough for everyone right now. We’ve had to change our schedules, start working from home or putting in extra hours, and some of us have lost jobs or wages. But even if the challenges are great, the opportunities to overcome them are even greater, if you put your mind to it.
This week on the Compete Every Day podcast, host Jake Thompson talks about hitting the reset button and committing yourself to winning tomorrow’s possession.
When you are emotionally exhausted or mentally done, it can be easy to get stuck on repeat in your head, playing the negatives over and over again. But that’s counterproductive. The past is the past and it can’t be changed.

What if you embraced the mindset that in the midst of this storm, you’re going to plant seeds that will harvest into an even better path down the road?
What if instead of seeing challenges as the end of your story, you saw it as the end of a chapter – and the beginning of a better one?
The decision on how you see this storm is 100% up to you. Choose the perspective of a Competitor.
You are enough. To come to a place where you’re living in contentment, you have to practice radical self-acceptance. That means facing and accepting the things that scare you — all the niggling feelings of inadequacy and self-judgment — and learning to love who you are right here, right now.
This week, U.S. Army lieutenant and former NFL player Caleb Campbell talks about the power of transformation. It comes down to shifting from having fear as a motivator, to being motivated by love.

Leaders don’t pass the buck to someone else. They take responsibility for their actions and decisions and work to change them in the future if they need improvement. Owning your choices is an integral part of learning what you have control over in your own life.
By understanding that you play a part in creating the situation you’re in, you can take action to change that situation and improve your decision-making.
If you don’t take responsibility, it’s easy instead to take a backseat in your own life and become a follower, rather than a leader. So, each and every day, remember that it starts with you.
What You’ll Learn: * Own your decisions * Identify what is within your control to change * Work to fix your own problems * Don’t neglect the small tasks * Acknowledge the path that got you here

Your past doesn’t have to define you. Every day, you have the power to choose how you want to show up and what person you want to be. This week, athlete and Gym Gypsy founder Vanessa Bennington talks about the transformative power of self-reflection, journaling, and changing daily habits to break your own mold.
All through high school and into her 20s, Bennington struggled with an eating disorder. She was trying to beat her genes and stay fit as an adult -- but was doing it in a dangerous and self-destructive way. Then, she found CrossFit and started journaling every day. Now, she owns her own company which makes a line of fitness and life journals, so others can use writing to change their circumstances.

Nobody is born with mental or physical grit. It’s something you develop over time, by facing challenging situations and making it through to the other side.
This week, dog musher and author Katherine Keith talks about overcoming grief and loss and the importance of grit. She’s successfully competed in both the Yukon Quest and the Iditarod, two of the most difficult long-distance dog races in the world.
Both races saw Keith and her dog team venture 1,000 miles deep into the Alaskan and Canadian wilderness in the bitter cold of winter. The hardships on the trail pushed her past her breaking point, but also helped her build the mental strength to keep going, mile after mile, to the finish line.

In spite of the challenges, you have the power to succeed. You just have to get into the right headspace to use your speed bumps as stepping stones that will take you where you want to go.
This week, author, entrepreneur, motivational speaker and former NFL player J. J. Birden shares his stories of dealing with change and using a positive mindset to make the most of life’s curve balls.
Throughout his life and career, J. J. Birden has dealt with his fair share of setbacks. In sports, he’s overcome injuries and fought his way from bottom to top among the best. He’s also stepped up in his personal life, bringing his five nieces and nephews into his family when they fell on hard times.
At any of those moments, he could have given in and been overwhelmed by the difficulty of the situation facing him. But instead, he made the choice to put in the work to achieve the outcome he wanted. All decisions take you up or down, he says. Trying something outside your comfort zone doesn’t mean you’re setting yourself up for failure. It means you’re setting yourself up to learn something new, which is how you improve as an athlete, entrepreneur, and person.
But even though many people still fear taking that step, it’s critical to push your limits in order to grow. That’s why week’s guest, CrossFit athlete and coach Chase Ingraham, encourages everyone to “dive into the unknown.”
Getting the courage to take the plunge comes down to managing your expectations, being realistic about the challenges you’re facing, and shifting your narrative. Rather than focusing on your small achievements and stopping there, Ingraham says, when you’ve reached a small goal, move the goalpost. If it’s tough at first, that’s OK.
Over time, trying new or difficult things builds your confidence that no matter what happens, it’s not going to be as bad as you think. And with that knowledge, you open yourself up to letting go of control and seeing how much you can truly achieve.
What You’ll Learn: * Set realistic expectations * Practice honesty with coaches and athletes * Lift up those around you * Acknowledge the challenges you’re facing * Use competition to inspire you

Many of us struggle with the crucial mental skill of positive self-talk.
We talk to ourselves worse than the online trolls could ever imagine doing. But it’s not because we were born without some special talent to be positive. Instead, it’s because we haven’t grown it.
Just like building our physical muscles in the gym requires repetition and sometimes, discomfort getting under a heavier weight, we can only build our positive mental skill of self-talk one (sometimes uncomfortable) repetition at a time.
On this week's show, I share how the steps you can take to build positive self-talk and make sure your biggest cheerleader lives between your ears instead of your worst enemy.

If there’s one thing every athlete understands, it’s that fear can hold you back. When you find yourself avoiding practices or a challenge at work out of fear, make overcoming it your goal.
This week, author and endurance athlete Matt Fitzgerald shares his story of developing a growth mindset and using his fear to push him to reach his potential.
Fitzgerald says it wasn’t the pressure to succeed that got to him mentally; it was a fear of the suffering it would take to get there. The runs were hard, the races harder, and he had to find a way of shifting how he thought about that path in order to cross the finish line.
Instead of having that suffering — his fear — be a means to an end, he made it the goal itself. He decided he would only consider a race or a run successful if he gave it his all and ended on empty. It didn’t matter if he won or lost, just that he tried his hardest.

Discovering your own competitive advantage is at the heart of this week’s conversation with author and podcaster Cody Royle. His book, Where Others Won’t: Taking People Innovation from the Locker Room into the Boardroom, delves deep into lessons from teams around the world on leadership theory, group dynamics, and talent optimization. This week, he shares what he’s learned about what both individuals and teams can do to find their niche.
Royle says the big takeaway former athletes have going forward to a new career is their sense of self-awareness. Athletes spend much of their time getting feedback from others, be they coaches or fellow players. That helps them understand their strengths and weaknesses and explore what they enjoy doing and what they don’t. That understanding is a critical asset outside the world of sports, as well, and can help a person find their best fit in business or whatever they ultimately pursue.

It doesn’t matter how good you are or how great you rise to be, you will always have critics. Some of the best in their profession still had critics – even when their work record was impeccable.
Instead of being distracted by what others say and constantly focused on how you can win their approval, invest your time and energy to what matters more: your effort, your actions, & your attitude.
Jake busts the myth that you can win that critic’s approval with “good enough” effort, and challenges listeners to stop being distracted by the unimportant and start dialing in on what matters most.

Culture is key, in the locker room and the boardroom. Texas high school football coach Randy Jackson opens up in this week's episode on team-building and co-creating team culture to create a framework both players and coaches buy into. If a group has common goals and speaks the same language both on the field and off, they are primed for success, even if they don’t always win.
The way to build that strong culture lies in having a dialogue with players and staff. People are more likely to want to uphold a structure if they feel they’ve been a part of creating it—if they have a stake in it and know why it is how it is. Just telling players why they should be a certain way falls flat, but if they have skin in the game, loyalty and drive follow not far behind.

Sometimes we have to just do the work. Every big, audacious goal requires an investment from us. Sometimes it requires a large investment of time, like writing a book. Sometimes it requires courage to take the first step into a gym for the first time. And sometimes the goal requires we swallow our pride and start ugly, slow, or inexperienced.
The investments are uncomfortable.
So instead of doing what we know we need to, we choose easy distractions and create excuses to justify their importance. We sacrifice reaching our true long-term goals for short-term quick-fixes that we talk ourselves into believing matter.

That’s the core message from today’s guest, Ryan Michler, founder of Order of Man. Order of Man is dedicated to building up strong, independent, and capable men.

How did we get to this place?
A place where people believe they're entitled to reaching their goals and a certain lifestyle because of simply who they are. Every day is a competition.
Except instead of someone lined up across from us on the sports field or the person next to us lifting a barbel, it’s with our ego, our comfort zone, and fear. It’s with the desire to simply “clock in and clock out” for 40+ years and waste a career while simultaneously wasting a life.
But the good news is this is a competition you can win. The most successful people you know in corporate America have learned to compete at work and win each year. They take the same approach to their health, relationships, and mindset to build the career they want, instead of like most people, reluctantly accepting the career they have.
Here are five simple ways you can invest in yourself and compete to build your career.

Want to be a winner in life? You have to build an unbreakable mindset first.
Here's why Competitors believe they are a legend in their own mind - and why it's one of the most powerful ingredients in the formula for success.
When the time comes to move on, it’s important to realize it and do just that. Open a new door. Take advantage of an unexpected opportunity. Don’t shy away from change.
That’s the message from this week’s guest. Rachel Balkovec was the first female strength and conditioning coach in MLB history, but she’s much more than that. In this episode, Balkovec talks about not being afraid to upset the norm and recognize when the current path isn’t working anymore.

There are a lot of people that believe that competition is bad. They have the perspective that if they're not physically lined up across from someone trying to beat them, then they're not competing.
That perspective is wrong.
Each of us, every day, are in a competition. And if you don't realize that you're in a competition, how can you ever expect to win?
Understand what you're up against. Compete to overcome it. My thoughts on what each of our daily competition looks like - and how to start each morning to make sure you get the leg up on what competes against you.
This week, we hear from former tennis player and current touring coach Christopher Williams about the power of mindset. He works to break down the stigma of talking about sports psychology and mental training. He also talks about the importance of preparation, expectation management, and having a diversified life.

Are you allowing your position - at work, on the team, in life - determine your output? Are you letting where you are today influence the effort, the energy, and the focus you pour into your purpose on earth?
Find out how Competitors approach this topic and what you need to do in order to be successful in every pursuit you take in life.
Some kids come in with grit, others have to learn to develop it. But no matter how they started on a team, they need to learn perseverance to succeed both in sports and in life. This week, we hear from Houston Baptist University football coach Roger Hinshaw about the power of competition for kids and adults. He talks about the trends he’s seen during his many years as a coach and shows that while talent is often praised, it’s easier to come by than sheer determination.
Learn how Competitors view - and attack - obstacles that show up in life. Most people cower or back down when life tries to knock them down. Most people also fail to reach their goals or their full potential.
Find out what simple perspective shift can fuel you toward overcoming your next obstacle the way a Competitor does.
There is power in positivity. This week, we hear from athlete and entrepreneur Cletus Coffey, who considers himself an eternal optimist. After an injury brought his sports chapter to a close, he struggled to find a new identity off the field in the world of business. He talks about learning to overcome doubt during tough transitions and using optimism, empathy, and gratitude to build a strong framework for the future.
There are a million excuses that I can whip out of thin air instantaneously. We all can.
Because using excuses is easier than doing what we need to get done.
But as you've heard me say all month, excuses don't get the job done. Excuses don't add an extra "0" to your bank account and they won't help you reach your goals. Excuses don't create champions - and Champions don't create excuses.
So how did I break up - and then kill - the excuses my inner critic was trying to create?
This episode features the four actions I took to curb, and then bury, the excuses I caught myself going back to time and time again.
It’s not about how much you win, it’s about the effort you put in to compete and the lessons you take away from trying.
This week, we hear from one of my Texas high school football coaches, Kurt Traylor, who shares tips on how to successfully coach the next generation to succeed in sports and in life by teaching them to pound the stone.
Today we dive into the PROCESS - the importance of one and how the most successful Competitors in life embrace the process and all of its boring, monotonous, slowly growing timeline.
And that in order to win, you have to embrace every part of your process.
Everyone will face setbacks in their own life. That’s something Coach Dar knows well.

By shifting the framework of how you approach each day, you can start using setbacks as the fuel for reaching your peak.
No one likes starting at the bottom and being a rookie surrounded by veterans, or worse, all-pros. But you can't get to their level of success and experience unless you're willing to start as a rookie with the basics. And this doesn't just apply to football.
An Olympic silver medal is a win, but for a hardcore team competitor, it can feel like—and be—a loss if it meant missing out on gold by just a hair.
Cat Osterman, who is a Hall of Fame pitcher and one of the top 5 softball players of all time, has seen the Olympics from both sides. She walked away from two Olympic games with both a silver and a gold medal to show.
Now she’s a college level coach. This week, Osterman talks about coming down from the highest high and coming up from the lowest low.

Everyone has excuses - but Competitors bury theirs and refuse to let them impact their pursuits. You can listen to your excuses, or you can bury them. What will you decide?
Life is never a straight path. It’s full of twists and turns, and challenges and opportunities that arise when we least expect them. This week we hear from Johnny Quinn, who transitioned to Olympic bobsledding after an injury and the loss of a pro football contract. No matter how difficult things have been in the past, there’s always a way to turn it around. That’s something this week’s guest knows all too well. Kristi Huizenga is the head women’s soccer coach at the University of Vermont. When she came on board as the youngest coach to ever lead the team, she managed to take a group of underdogs and turn them into a competitive force to be reckoned with. This week, Huizenga talks about not getting caught up in immediate success and learning to make a commitment to sustainable and lasting change through competition.
No one has time for anything these days, including success.
We want it all and we want it now.
Too often we focus on the tip of the iceberg above water (glory) instead of the gigantic block of ice underneath the water (grind).
But still you want to know the secret to overnight success? How can you crush your goals, build your business, and win your sport today?
The magic formula to overnight success is this....
It’s not about them, it’s about you. At the end of the day, competition boils down to an internal drive to do your best. This week, we hear from LeRoy Gardner III, head coach of the University of the Ozarks wrestling team. He shares tips on staying focused and accountability, keeping yourself prepared for competition, and finding the strength within you to do your best.
It can be easy to get caught up in focusing on your competitor—what they’re doing and how hard they’re working—and forget that success begins inside. In order to be the best competitor you can be, you have to learn to push your own boundaries and constantly challenge yourself, so you’re ready to rock when things get tough. Personal accountability means not getting lost in your to-do lists, but finding a way to dig deep and do what needs to be done to advance your own goals.
Does it even matter if you're a Competitor?

This week, we hear from him about the foundations of youth sports, what it takes to retain young players as a coach, and the process of achieving success through competition over time.
What do you see?
Do you look at that boulder before you as an adversity which has you beat? Or is it an opportunity to inspire others? Jake challenges your perspective in this week's mini-episode. Competitors don't see challenges like everyone else, and Jake dives into why.
And how you can make sure you refocus your perspective.
Finish your week stronger than you started with SPEED WORK!

Why do you think you can’t do something? Is it because you really can’t do it? Because someone said you couldn’t? Or is it because you’re afraid of failure, so you just haven’t tried to do it? An athlete never wants to walk off the playing field at the end of a game - much less a career - knowing they still have more in the tank. Each wants to leave spent - having given everything they have in pursuit of everything they want. Head held high, they know they've done everything. Full effort. Full victory. And no matter what the scoreboard reads, they know they went out swinging hard.
Competitors live the same way they play.
Often we feed so much negativity into an adversity, that we blow it entirely out of proportion. This is looking at the big picture, which keeps you honest and focused on the path ahead. Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim MiLB Pitcher Nathan Smith shares his professional baseball journey & the importance of “The Midnight Rule” to succeeding at every level of his playing career - and personal life. Learn how you can apply this same rule to pursuing your career.
It's easy to be a dreamer. "Wouldn't it be nice if..." is usually how dreams start. There's zero risk, zero chance of failure, and zero chances of you getting hurt by just dreaming. And there is zero opportunity for you to ever reach that dream by simply dreaming about it. Like a marathoner – the only way you run a marathon is to actually run a marathon. You can think about running at work. You can imagine running at night while lying in bed. But unless you actually put your shoes on the pavement and start moving forward, you aren’t running. You’re still on the sidelines. You just can’t do BIG things in sports - or life - from the sidelines. It’s not possible.
In this episode, Jake explores the idea of "Dream big, live bigger" and why its crucial to being a Competitor.
We all get blindsided by something that hurls us into a life of completely different circumstances. After spending nearly two decades in the industry as a whole and observing pros like Kobe Bryant and Kevin Durant, Alan learned a few things about creating productive habits and cultivating the right mindset for success. In this episode, Alan Stein Jr. shares what he does to stay competitive, how he challenges himself to stay sharp, the importance of sports in school, and the winning mindset strategies he’s learned both on and off the court that you can use to be better than you were yesterday.

Ashley and Po Bronson’s book, Top Dog: The Science of Winning and Losing, discusses the science of competition and reveals why it’s important to experience defeat — on and off the field. Competition allows us to better gauge our abilities by identifying strengths and weaknesses, and reveals what needs improvement. Without the contrast of winning and losing, there’s no motivation to push to maximum potential.
You can find growth and opportunity in every loss if you position your mindset to learn from your mistakes. Listen in as Ashley and Jake discuss some of those powerful mindset shifts and approaches that can help you to be better than you were yesterday.
Transition Coach Daron Roberts is an expert at helping people ‘jump off the ledge of their doubts’ but only after making some major life shifts of his own. Through Daron’s Amazon bestselling book, Call An Audible, his course, “A Gameplan Winning at Life,” and motivational Instagram videos, he knows no bounds when it comes to inspiring others to transition into being the best version of themselves.
It's easy to obsess over what everyone else is doing, and it’s even easier to use them as a gauge of where or what you should be. But how engaged are you in your own goals and life? Is it more than the time you spend playing the comparison game? More energy than you put into obsessively and anxiously checking your social media accounts? If you’re honest with yourself, the answers might reveal a truth…
You’re the one getting in the way of your success. You have and always will be your biggest competitor.
So how do you compete with yourself so you can make progress toward achieving your goals? All you have to do is be better than you were yesterday.
A true competitor is determined to excel, even in the face of adversity. But adversity is much more than upsets, unfortunate events, or other external obstacles. Sometimes it’s our own pride that presents the challenge and holds us back from experiencing true growth.
No one wants to go backwards. It feels counterintuitive. Especially when so much effort goes into achieving greatness. But giving yourself the green light to put it in reverse could be exactly what you need to progress forward.
Taking a step back isn’t accepting failure or admitting defeat. It’s a way to gain perspective and clarity on challenging situations in your life. A time to reevaluate where to invest your valuable time, effort, and energy. A way to create space so you can tend to what might’ve been overlooked while pursuing success.
When stepping back might be the answer, fear and pride are the true adversities. Accept the challenge to overcome them so you can ultimately take ten steps forward toward your long-term success.
“Avoid stress, don’t do anything to physically exert yourself, and if you’re planning on having any children — don’t.” That’s the advice Susan Kovacs’ neurologist gave after diagnosing her with multiple sclerosis in 1985. Not something you want to hear when you’re in your mid-twenties, or at any point in your life at that. Anything she had planned for her future completely shifted. But just as easily as life can shift your plans, so can your mindset.
In her mid-fifties, Susan's strength coach asked her to consider a triathlon. It was a dare that would take her well beyond her comfort zone and “the life doctors prescribed her.” Susan explored the true impact that mindset has on our lives and adopted the mantra "my body achieves what my mind believes." With that, she made the physical and mental transition to being actively involved in athletics.
Combining her superpowers of research and personal experience, Susan has found her path as a performance mindset coach helping athletes, corporate leaders, sales professionals, and entrepreneurs optimize their performance through mindset mastery.

And less than a year out, Doc has already added a business partner and an intern to the roster to keep up with the growing clientele.
Here’s Doc’s key insights on making a small business succeed:

Matt served for over 25 years as an Infantryman in the U.S. army. He is a really awesome guy I’ve had the pleasure of knowing over the past months. I think you’ll get a lot out of his story transitioning from a career in the military to civilian life and how he’s been able to bring that approach and that discipline to his everyday life.
When Matt was struggling to find who he was, the actions he took and the discipline he had before he went through this challenge made all the difference.
In times of war and peace, Matt has led organizations of every size, including small units, as a platoon leader, up to a three-year post as Garrison Commander at Fort Hood, Texas. He shares with us how he brings military practices into the corporate world to motivate others and share a strong vision.

Competing for Longer Lives
Today I’m sitting down with the Founders and Board of the Be The Difference Foundation based in Dallas. The organization was formed by four ovarian cancer survivors in different phases of survivorship, but they all have passion for life and ending the fight against ovarian cancer.
More than half of the women diagnosed with ovarian cancer pass away within five years of the diagnosis. Be The Difference gives women hope for a longer survivorship by supporting cure research, clinical trials, and more.
Be The Difference is hosting a Wheel to Survive event in Dallas February 26th to raise funds that will support women fighting ovarian cancer. This is a fun opportunity to give back, interact with the community, and be the difference. Wheel to Survive will also be hosted in cities throughout Texas, South Florida, and San Francisco.
In this episode, we talk about what it’s like getting diagnosed with ovarian cancer and fighting to extend life. These women teach incredible lessons about the power of choosing your attitude and helping other people who are facing challenges you have faced.
Do It in Excellence and Obedience
In this episode I’m joined by Jeremy Thiel. In 2005, Jeremy was introduced to CrossFit. Immediately, he knew he had discovered the path he’d been seeking since he first started training. This was not just a game he was going to play, but something he was going take part in that would effect positive change on a large scale. Naturally he dove in head first.
Jeremy felt the best way to learn was through action. Action, hard work, dedication, and discipline were the tools he utilized to take $500 and build a million dollar garage gym facility, CrossFit Central, in less than three years. In 2005, Jeremy along with his sister Carey started by running boot camps in parks all around Austin. He worked from his one bedroom apartment day in and day out blogging, emailing and programming; strong relationships sprouted out of his emphasis on the importance of being heavily involved in the Austin fitness community.
We talk about Jeremy’s journey to CrossFit and starting a gym, how he manages all his projects including a new podcast, and what’s coming up for him in 2017.
Age is a Number, Not a Limit
I’m joined this week by Robert McDaniel, a certified Spartan training coach. Bob isn’t your ordinary Spartan racer. He didn’t actually start running until his 40s.

You’ll hear how Bob found Spartan racing and committed to the race, who inspires him to quit complaining, and how dedicated he is to training his clients and helping them overcome their fears.
Heart of a Champion

Don’t fall for the movie trailers.
I love movies. I love actually going to the movies. The fresh popcorn, the brand-new trailers, and the fact that I can just escape for two hours.
But you know the one thing about movie trailers that gets me – the actual trailer. It always gets me to the movie. And think about it, how many bad movie trailers have you seen? Probably none. Maybe one in your lifetime?
For the most part, the movie trailers are great. And then you go to the movie, and the movie sucks. Now, how does that relate to you today? I dive into the trap of “movie trailers” and how we can bypass the trap in our lives.
How important is it to have a positive mental image of ourselves?
CrossFit. Olympic Weightlifting. Body image issues, what? That’s the story Salt Lake City CrossFit athlete Cassidy Duffield shares in this week’s episode. Growing up as a gymnast, Cassidy has always been a more muscular woman. That led to special attention when she was younger, including being called “manly” as a teen.
She spent years at a mainstream gym trying to be “skinny” and lose the muscle and weight she had built as a gymnast. As she grew older, Cassidy learned to love her body and the strength she had after joining the CrossFit community.
In this conversation, you’ll hear Cassidy’s incredible story, the way she overcame body image challenges, and how to create a compelling vision of your future self.
