I’ve not told too many people this, but I’m finally starting to share that I’m a full-time day-trader. Never in a million years would I have thought that would be my profession. It wasn’t something I planned. It kind of just happened.

During my health sabbatical, I needed a way to distract my mind and make money without having to be public-facing. So, I decided to learn how to trade stocks. Fast forward 18-months, and I’m a professional full-time trader.

Yes, I still have the podcast and lead retreats, but trading stocks has provided me more freedom and flexibility in prioritizing what brings me the most joy.

In today’s Hustle & Flow episode, I’m sharing why I love trading so much, why I think everyone needs this skillset, and how you can start making short-term investments even as a busy professional.

Today’s episode is part II to episode #149, Trusting Your Intuition. Feel free to listen to the episodes in any order but do listen to them both as they work hand-in-hand! And, as you listen, make sure you throw all logic out of the window. Intuition and signs don’t necessarily follow logic, but they can still play a crucial part in your personal life and career. Try to listen with an open-mind, and, as you do, you will learn that signs are some kind of validation or information from something greater. You will also hear relatable stories where signs created confirmations in choices being made.

Things we’re covering in this episode:

  • What exactly is a sign and how you can use signs to confirm whether you are on the right or wrong path

  • Signs, like intuition, are not logical

  • Recognizing signs can be beneficial for anyone, even if you don’t think you believe in them

  • How to determine if you are using signs in the wrong way as an excuse or an explanation when you feel as though you have no control over a situation and you want to point to something as an explanation

  • Appropriate and helpful times to use signs

  • Observing signs doesn’t always mean you need to take action, because sometimes signs just lead to confirmation of a path you are already on

The Service Not Sales Workshop

I’m hitting the road! Starting in April, I will be in a different city each month - Phoenix (April 23-24), Philadelphia (May 18-19), Austin (June 17-18), LA (July 23-24), Nashville (August 27-28) and more may be added. You will be digging into who your main prospects are, how to be clear on your brand, how to lead with your strengths, how to message who you are, what you do next and more. Because so many of you are out and traveling over the holiday season, we do not have a regular episode of the podcast today. However, I did want to bring you a bonus episode, which is a rerun of one that aired about two years ago at this time and is related to creating a vision board. I am such a huge proponent for vision boards, and I’ve seen them work for me and my clients, time and time again. In fact, my vision board is framed in my office, and I look at it every single day! When you finish your vision board, I would love for you to take a photo of it and tag me on social media (I’m @heatherjoyhubbard on both Instagram and Facebook). Enjoy the holidays, and I look forward to coming back next week with a new episode that will also help you prepare for the best 2020 possible!

Things we’re covering in this episode:

• How a vision board can give you clarity for the future (and even act as a predictor of it)

• Why the magazines you use really won’t matter and what to look for when reviewing the materials

• What supplies you’ll need and how long the process will take

• How to decide on what to include on your board, and what to leave out

• How and where to display your vision board, and why this will be so important!

Dr. Valerie Rein is a psychologist and brilliant businesswoman who magically came into my life a few years ago. It’s been so much fun watching her business grow and running into each other in the most random situations.

She has a new book, Patriarchy Stress Disorder: The Invisible Inner Barrier to Women's Happiness and Fulfillment, coming out next week so I had to have her on the podcast.

From generational trauma to patriarchal systems (including medicine and psychology), Dr. Valerie shares how and why women have been trained to believe that they are broken and that something is wrong with them.

She’s on a mission to change that narrative and provide practical tools to overcoming this epidemic. To pre-order her book, and receive the first chapter for free, all you have to do is go to https://www.drvalerie.com/book.

What we cover in this episode:

• How Dr. Valerie went from an overworked psychologist to a coach and speaker based on a health scare that set her on a new path

• Generational trauma and what she defines as “Patriarchy Stress Disorder”

• Why we tend to minimize and deny trauma and the reasons why you often need more than just talk therapy

• How change can happen very fast when you use trauma healing tools and techniques

It can be scary when you make big investments in yourself and your business. To help with your decision-making process, and to ensure that you stay focused on what matters most to you, it’s important to identify and calculate the return on investment (ROI) that you’re expecting. Sometimes that’s a financial return, but it doesn’t have to be. Whether you’re hiring a service provider, renting more office space, or adding new employees, getting clear on your expected ROI is a powerful tool.

Here’s what I’m sharing in this episode:

  • How to determine if an investment is “worth it”

  • Why ROI isn’t always about financial gain (and what else you need to consider)

    • Examples from my own business on how I’ve calculated ROI when determining whether to make an investment
  • If you’re not happy with the results, you might be surprised to know the real reason why…

  • Why it’s so important for service providers and their clients to get clear on expected ROI to avoid disappointment and misunderstandings

I believe that websites are important for all businesses. While it may not be your primary marketing or sales tool, a good (or bad) website creates an immediate impression of your brand as well as your credibility, expertise, personal style, and use of technology. In the constantly-evolving digital age, it’s something we all need to be looking at and updating every single year – both in terms of aesthetics, functionality, and conversions. I’m redoing my website right now for these very reasons, so I wanted to bring on my web designer and developer, Amber Vilhauer, to share her best tips with you as well.

What we cover in this episode:

• How Amber went from a marketing and sales corporate superstar to starting her own agency

• Lessons learned from a decade of entrepreneurship

• Why narrowing your focus and speaking to your ideal customers is critical to the success of your website (and business)

• Tips and strategies for creating an effective website

• Why everyone needs a website and how it can help move your business and career forward starting right now

Although corporate America suits my personality quite well, I’m not a fan of the masculine approach. It shows up in so many obvious and subtle ways that for many it becomes too much and they exit out. From dealing with the good old boys’ club, having to dress and show up in certain ways, and working in a boring and stuffy environment, it’s easy to question whether the sacrifices are worth it.

In today’s episode, I’m exploring ideas of how to shake things up, push boundaries, and start to make corporate America more enjoyable for everyone.

Here’s what you’ll learn in this episode:

  • Why it’s so hard for many of us to show up as our authentic selves in corporate environments
  • How working in Biglaw affected my own identity and sense of self – and what happened when I left that environment
  • The main reasons we water down who we really are in the workplace and the mindset that’s holding us back
  • How adopting an unCorporate Manifesto can help reclaim what corporate America looks like so it’s more equal and enjoyable for everyone

I’m constantly seeing posts by other women encouraging collaboration over competition. While I understand the sentiment, it furthers the stereotype that women shouldn’t be ambitious or assertive. There is plenty of opportunity for us to compete and collaborate. If you ever worry about being perceived as competitive or if you think competition is a dirty word, this episode is for you!

Things I’m covering in this episode:

• Why women should compete – including against other women

• The double standard some women are unintentionally perpetuating that’s holding us all back

• When to compete and when to collaborate

• Why the real focus should be around women supporting other women as opposed to promoting the concept of “collaboration over competition”

• How embracing your competitive side helps ALL women win

If you’re a woman or minority, you’ve probably been added to a pitch team at the last minute. Whether expressly stated, you know you’ve been brought in as the “diversity add.” While you might be grateful for the opportunity, it’s difficult to stand out and shine when you’re given less time to prepare and not included in developing the initial strategy. In today’s episode, I’m sharing my best tips on how to handle these situations.

Things you will learn in this episode:

• Practical tips for making the most of an opportunity even when you’re a “diversity add”

• Ways to be proactive so you can gain pitch opportunities as an integral part of the team (rather than as a token member)

We often talk about the fear of failure, but we rarely consider the fear of success, which can be just as paralyzing. When a podcast listener asked if I’d address this, I wanted to know more. She shared that she’s been using the Life & Law PlannerTM and is now on track to reach her goals. Which is great, right? But the thought of reaching her goals is scaring her. She asked, “How do I deal with this fear?” I absolutely love this topic and can’t wait to dig in!

Things you’ll learn in this episode:

• Why we feel uncomfortable with too much happiness and success and start to assume something bad is about to happen

• What it means to hit an upper limit and the ways in which we self-sabotage our growth

• How success can create tension in our relationships or otherwise require us to show up in a new way

• What to do when you feel fear and anxiety related to your growth and success potential

From the business of research to the business of equality, in this episode, Shelley talks about being a leader in a male-dominated industry, embracing what makes us different, why it’s up to us to rewrite the rules, and how to leverage what she calls the “power of the pack.”

If you’re a partner in a large firm (or perhaps even a medium sized firm), there’s likely an entire process you have to follow each year for your partner compensation and equity credits. Regardless of your firm’s process, it’s important that you plan ahead and play an active role. • Why it’s important to know your firm’s formal and informal compensation process
  • How building relationships with key decision makers can make all the difference
  • What numbers you should be focusing on and how to back them up for the greatest impact

  • How perfectionism kills creativity
  • Perfectionism can be outward facing, as well as inward

  • The neuroscience behind meditation and how Harvard researchers have proven that it changes the brain over time

In this episode, I’m taking a hard look at the data available on the status of women in the legal profession in the United States. Statistics don’t have to be boring because they tell stories - and these numbers say a lot. Has there been any progress made over the past decade for women in law and, if so, how much and in what areas? I give my thoughts on where we can go from here, both collectively and individually, and what I think are the leading issues facing us today.

IN THIS EPISODE YOU WILL LEARN:

  • What is the ‘50/15/15’ conundrum?
  • The "challenge" issued by the National Association of Women Lawyers in 2006 to address promotion issues in the profession
  • How law firms may be creating roles for women that are actually allowing us to go backward
  • Why I believe participation in the Challenge decreased recently
  • Women are paid less in other industries, but what does the data say for law firms?
  • Proof that unconscious bias is happening when women don't have a seat at the table
  • At the current rate of progress, here’s when we’ll meet the objectives of the Challenge
  • How women of color have it worse in law firms today
  • And, where we go from here
