Heroin and opiate prescription pain medication addiction is a massive health problem that is pandemic and now threatens an entire generation of young people, aged 21-35, their families and their friends. From 2009 to 2013, Arizona deaths from heroin and prescription opiates (Percocet, Oxycodone, hydrocodone, etc) overdose have doubled and now claim the life of almost two young people per day. Nationally, more deaths now occur as a result of drug overdose than from automobile accidents.
Dr. William Nelson has an ambitious goal of turning the tide of this horrible problem by cutting overdose deaths nationally by 50% in the next five years. There are a myriad of challenges that need to be accomplished in order to making such a huge impact on this overwhelming societal health problem. These challenges will be covered in a monthly show entitled, “Your Personal Road to Addiction Recovery.” The topics included in the program will include: education and prevention, public drug policy and drug laws, economics of drug industry and detox and rehab centers, latest advances in heroin and opiate addiction treatment, in-patient versus out-patient withdrawal and treatment, counseling and inner personal work for improved long term sobriety, impact of addiction on family dynamics, and other pertinent topics as they arise.
The first episode of this ongoing monthly program will be recorded on Wednesday May 3rd, 2017 at 10:00 am. Please tune in to this program and invite everyone you know that is personally affected by this overwhelming problem. Chances are, everyone you know has been personally affected or knows a friend, co-worker, or neighbor that has lost a loved one due to death by overdose.

Dr. Nelson interviews Rebekah Mutch who is in long-term recovery and is deeply passionate about helping others still struggling with addiction. She spent much of my adult life caught in the grip of addiction, which led her to a place of hopelessness—homeless, in and out of jail and rehab, and estranged from family and loved ones. In 2021, she had the chance to come to Kentucky from California and try the NET Device. It was a completely different experience from anything she had ever encountered, and it had a life-changing effect. For the first time in many years, she gained clarity of mind and was actually 100% drug-free.
Since then, her life changed in ways she never thought possible. She went back to school, built a home, and created a life for herself in Kentucky surrounded by meaningful friendships. She became a dependable employee and rebuilt relationships with her family, and found hope for her future and looks forward to all the possibilities that still lie ahead.
Today, she has the privilege of working as Community Liaison for NET Recovery, and can honestly say she never felt more aligned with her purpose. It’s incredibly rewarding to be part of a mission that’s so personal, helping others who are struggling with addiction and guiding them toward the same hope and healing that she found.

Her directorial debut is a critically acclaimed 54 min. documentary film entitled “SURVIVORS,” detailing real opioid stories of recoveries and losses. She, along with her husband Murray, who is the co-executive producer of the documentary, have also set up a non-profit, Not One More Time, to raise awareness about the opioid crisis. The motivation for its creation was due to the unfortunate loss of their 43-year-old son to a drug overdose. They struggled to understand how this could have happened, and how it could have been prevented. Filmmakers by profession, they chose to channel their grief and turn their talents into creating a documentary that would expose the destructive path that opioids can cause in the lives of everyday normal people. Their mission is to produce more media and educational content that delves into revealing the largest epidemic in modern history that is hidden in plain sight!

In October of 2018, Amanda Webster stood on the ledge of a Canadian hotel room, ready to end my life. A song playing at the right place at the right time brought me down and I made a pact with myself. I was going to give it my all for one year. If I still felt the same desolation after that, I gave myself permission to jump. The only problem was that I had no idea where to start. I’d seen the counselors, taken the medications, journaled and read as many self-help books as my brain could handle. I’d even turned to the less admirable options of alcohol, cocaine, cigarettes and self-harm.
I eventually concluded that it was time to get back to basics. It wasn’t eating a salad or taking a Yoga class or reading a book. It was reconstructing my lifestyle and way of thinking as a whole.

Most people struggling with addiction feel they are isolated and alone. Alcohol, heroin, Fentanyl, etc temporarily relieves the loneliness, but theIr effects are short lived and are only chemically masking the delusion of being isolated from God, ourself and others that can be extremely painful. Epiphany Jordan wrote a great book called "Somebody Hold Me" to help educate people on 1) Importance of non-sexual touch 2) A Step by Step Guide on how to add touch to existing relationships in a safe, non-threatening and comfortable way and 3) How to navigate the nuanced and highly charged cultural environment regarding how, when, where, and why you could and should create opportunities for personal touch. It very well may be the missing piece to your recovery from your illness, physical pain, or addiction.

Kimberly Spencer has overcome adversity in every area of life and business - growing up with an addict for a father, her own addictive battle with bulimia, abusive relationships, sexual abuse, debt, under earning, being bought out of her first commerce company 3 weeks before she got married, and 24 hours of natural childbirth. And what she learned from each challenge is ownership is essential, confidence is cultivated through cheering on your challenges, your language dictates your reality (and how to shift your language if you don't like your reality), and how you do anything is how you do everything, from how you treat your body to how you show up as the leader of your life.

Matt Scarfo is a 20 year fitness veteran and expert. Recently, he spoke to a group of 80 men in recovery at a local rehab shelter on "healthy food choices." Rather than giving a generic and not so useful "Eat this..avoid this" banal talk that everyone has heard, Matt caught the attention of the crowd with a much more profound and useful lecture on the "Food-Brain" connection. Matt says, "Our brain chemistry doesn't differentiate between the food and the drugs, the releases in the brain are exactly the same. A person that has stopped alcohol or drugs isn't being cured or even managed for that matter if they are using food as a drug. "There is a neurochemical Trojan Horse still satisfying the recovering brain's need for the same rush of chemicals they would get had they just dosed-up with their drug of choice. No different than substituting porn for coke, or gambling for alcohol." A must listen for everyone, especially an abstinent addict in recovery still "jonesing" for a rush because of their diet. Mark says, "As we know "addictions" are gnarly situations, and there is no one singular solution. (Six months ago I met the executive director at the Above and Beyond Family Recovery Center in Chicago and learned that there is a 95% relapse rate with the conventional 12-steps method. That stat shocked me.) Energy medicine work such as that I practice--in conjunction with other layers of support--can be a helpful tool for people that are really, really stuck in addictions. Each session is unique/ customized to support a specific client, and I often find that individuals have "offensive energies" (entities, curses) that are locking into place their addiction(s)."

The local approach has allowed Oakland residents to benefit from plant medicines for addiction recovery without having to wait for a federal program (that will probably never come). Danielle overcame her 12 year polydrug addiction to opiates, benzos, etc by combining psychedelics, self care, and integration therapy with professionals trained to support the unique needs of person in recovery. This approach allows the use of therapeutic psychedelic plant medicines that are verboten in the dominant medical model of recovery and 12-step based programs.
