Until we meet again, many Blessings

Albert E. Brumley

Some glad morning when this life is over

I'll fly away

To a home on God's celestial shore

I'll fly away

'll fly away, oh, Glory

I'll fly away

When I die, Hallelujah, by and by

I'll fly away

Just a few more weary days and then

I'll fly away

To a land where joy shall never end

I'll fly away

I'll fly away, oh, Glory

I'll fly away

When I die, Hallelujah, by and by

I'll fly away

The past few weeks it has continued to be Winter around here in all its glory. Snow, Wind, Cold, Blizzard Warnings and everything else Winter related. And it is April, usually a time of warmer weather, Spring showers and a look forward to Summer.

I couldn't help but get out my guitar and write a song about this Winter. It is definietely not a love song. But it comes from the heart.

Winter You're Growing Old

words by Susan Engström McAuliffe

(sung to the tune of Sounds of Silence by Simon and Garfunkel)

Hello Winter you were my friend

But I’m tired of seeing you again

You never seem to want to disappear

Even though Spring is oh so near

You stay and keep on snowing

And being cold

Winter you’re growing old

Down the driveway I try to go

But there’s too much ice, there so much snow

I slip and slide and finally hit the ground

Buried in snow with drifts all around

And I pray someone will find me

Before I freeze

My toes and knees

And in the early morning day

I hear the weatherman say

Another storm out West is coming here

So don’t you put away your snow gear

Because once again you’ll need it

To fight the snow

Winter you’re growing old

I’m such a fool thinking Spring

When there’s still snow on everything

It seems we never ever see the sun

Will the warmth of Spring ever come

Or is this what climate change is

A big white abyss

Winter you’re growing old

Someday soon it will be Spring

We will sweat and forget everything

It will seem like Winter was never here

With mosquitoes buzzing in our ear

And we will long for a cooler days

Looking through the haze

Of a never ending Summer

My  latest sun is sinking fast

My race is nearly run

My strongest trials they now have passed

My Triumph now has begun

Oh, come, the angel band

Come and around me, stand

Oh bear me away on your snow white wings

To my immortal home…

Oh bear my longing heart to Him

Who bled and died for me

Whose blood now cleanses all from sin

And gives me Victory

I’ve almost gained my heavenly Home

My spirit softly sings

The Holy Ones behold they come

and I hear the sound of wings…

Time sure does fly by. Here are some songs by the grandkids when they first were learning to play instruments. 2 and 4 year olds banging out the percussion instruments and ukuleles and guitars strumming wildly, but always beautiful voices. It was some of my best days ever teaching them how to make music and playing and singing together. Now half of the grandkids are out of state and the ones nearby are getting older and have jobs and other activities. Their voices have changed and deepened. And the richness of their voices is something special to hear.

Minnesota...you are my home.

Minnesota Nights

by

Susan McAuliffe

Been up to the mountains, walked down by the sea

Home is where I put my heart, the place I choose to be

Sometimes my life’s been lonely, but it taught me how to cry

Now I’m lying ‘neath the Northern Lights of a Minnesota night.

The moon shines down on the lake tonight, the loon calls out her plea

The pine trees tall in the forest deep, have set my heart free

Sometimes my life gets crazy, but I’ve always gotten by

Standing ‘neath the Northern Lights of sa Minnesota Night

The lone wolf howls in the darkness, trying to find its way

Walks beneath the Northern Lights into that promised day

I’ll reach my destination, just keep looking to the sky

Walking ‘neath the Northern Lights of a Minnesota night.

The other day I was going through some of the music that the grandkids and I have done the past year. After watching the news and seeing all the sadness going on in Ukraine, I just needed a little happy time. And that usually can be found playing music with the grandkids. But it was a day when that wasn’t an option, so I dug into some of the past songs we have done together and recorded just for the fun of it. There were lots of rowdy songs and old bluegrass songs they have been taught. Some like Rocky Top, Mountain Dew, and the classic gospel ones like Amazing Grass and Nothing But the Blood of Jesus. And there are the old rock classics like, Sloop John B and Brown Eyed Girl. All done in the classic off key, rowdy guitar, ukulele, banjo grandkids’ style.

But I came across this song we did in a quiet moment when it was just a couple of the older kids singing and playing instruments. It is the old Judd’s song, “Love Can Build A Bridge”. I stopped and played it a few times, remembering that night we were together singing it and how the grandkids' voices blended together. There were the girls and then Eyasu with his adolescent changing beautiful deep sound. It got me thinking of the world today and all the bombing and destruction that is going on in Ukraine. We so need a bridge of love in Ukraine. We all need “to whisper love so loudly, so every heart will understand, that love and only love can join the tribes of man”. Here is from a special night of music with the grandkids. It is Love can Build a Bridge. Enjoy.

Love Can Build A Bridge

Songwriters: Paul Overstreet / John Jarvis / Naomi Judd

I'd gladly walk across the desert with no shoes upon my feet

To share with you the last bite of bread I had to eat

I would swim out to save you in your sea of broken dreams

When all your hopes are sinking, let me show you what love means

Love can build a bridge

Between your heart and mine

Love can build a bridge

Don't you think it's time?

Don't you think it's time?

I would whisper love so loudly, every heart could understand

That love and only love can join the tribes of man

I would give my hearts' desire so that you might see

The first step is to realize that it all begins with you and me

Love can build a bridge

Between your heart and mine

Love can build a bridge

Don't you think it's time?

Don't you think it's time?

When we stand together, it's our finest hour

We can do anything (anything)

Anything (anything)

Keep believing in the power

Love can build a bridge

Between your heart and mine

Love can build a bridge

Don't you think it's time?

Don't you think it's time?

Don’t you think it’s time?

Don’t you think it’s time?

To quote Paul Wellstone, " We all do better when we all do better". Such a simple statement with such a powerful message. Let's all work at being a better friend to those around us and hope it circles the globe.

Be A Better Friend (See Below)

Life can seem hard in this crazy world

And sometimes I just pay the cost

I think about all the life that I've  lived

And then I don’t seem so lost

CHORUS:

I’m going to live my life one day at a time

God Lord willing and the time don’t end

I’m going to sing my songs, and love my dogs,

And be a better friend

I’m going to spend the day, do the best that I can

Looking for the good all around

I’m going to take the time to help someone

Going to plant my feet on solid ground...

It’s time to save this world one day at a time

It’s time we love someone we may hate

For the time will come, we may stand alone

Let’s do it before it’s too late...

Retirement Day has happened for my Best Half! What does the future hold? Who knows, but part of it will be spent growing older together. This is a song I wrote for all of us who have a Best Half or Best Friend that we will grow old with.

Time Will Be Our Friend

Words and music by Susan McAuliffe

Do you think of me sometimes

At the setting of the sun?

I know I think of you

In everything I do

Time keeps moving on

Will you love me

When I grow old

Will you still hold my hand?

Will you walk with me into the sunset

And look back on the years gone by?

Well I know we move a little slower

And we hold each other up

All  the years that pass

All the memories filled with love.

As I look into your eyes

And I see the age in your hair

Ill keep loving you in everything I do

And time will be our friend

Traveling cross country 3400 miles makes me think of the old Waylon Jennings song "America"

"America"

Some have said, down through history

If you last it's a mystery

But I guess they don't know, what they're talking about

From the mountains down to the sea

You've become such a habit with me

America, America

Well, I come from, down around Tennessee

But the people in California

Are nice to me, America

It don't matter where I may roam

Tell you people that it's home sweet home

America, America

And my brothers are all black and white

Yellow too and the red man is right

To expect a little from you

Promise and then follow through, America

All the men who fell on the plains

And lived through hardship and pain

America, America

And the men who could not fight

In a war that didn't seem right

You let them come home, America

And my brothers are all black and white

Yellow too and the red man is right

To expect a little from you

Promise and then follow through, America

Well, I come from, down around Tennessee

But the people in California

Are nice to me, America

It don't matter where I may roam

Tell you people that it's home sweet home

America, America

America, America

It's home sweet home, America

America, America...

But none of us could tell you quite how."

Nursing is a job that has many opportunities and variety. In Minnesota it has many variances...for some it is being in a state of the art place like Mayo in Rochester or the U of MN doing research, for others it may be working in chemical dependency at the Hazelden/ Betty Ford Center. Or maybe even inner city at a large city hosptital. For me it was up and down the gravel country roads for 10 years...

Our first camping trip in about two years due to COVID and being at home. Some things like backing the trailer together never change, while some really important things have changed. As our neighbor 1/2 mile up the road said, “ if we want to camp, we can pitch a tent in our back field, it’s way more private than a campground”.

Minnesota nice is a cultural stereotype applied to the behavior of people from Minnesota implying residents are unusually courteous, reserved, mild-mannered and passive-aggressive. The phrase also implies polite friendliness, an aversion to open confrontation, a tendency toward understatement, a disinclination to make a direct fuss or stand out, apparent emotional restraint, and self-deprecation.

The past few weeks we had -30 below zero temps. True Minnesotans live to talk about the weather more than any other topic around. We have become accustomed to those "few days or weeks" of bitter cold and we get out the gear and carry on.

While this is a story to entertain during  our typical weather, please keep those in Texas dealing with winter storms and power outages in your thoughts and prayers. There are many places that you can donate to if you are feeling like you need to help. Solid Rock just donated to The American Red Cross. It was painless and took about 30 seconds and 3 clicks of the mouse. Texas, we love you.

Between not being able to travel much due to Covid and winter, I am ready to hit the road. Next year at this time we will both be retired and able to do what we want without having to juggle schedules arouund with jobs. There are many types of friendships that develop over the years. There are those that are "out of sight, out of mind" and are the people who only think of you when you are together doing something, and there may be a little discomfort when you get together after a long period of not being together.. And there are those that you may not see often and yet can pick up where you left off from last time you were together. These are what I consider "Sacred Friendshsips".  Everyone needs a few "sacred friendships" to make it these days.

Every home has a place where you hang out. Maybe a family room, living room or some other cozy spot. For our family, it is the kitchen. Many people crowded into one space. But it is the heart of our home, where stories are told and memories are made. There's always room around the table for all.

My grandma was a wise woman. She raised her family during the Great Depression. Food sometimes was scarce, but she always shared with those who had less than her. She had the ability to always “make do” with what she had available. She passed that on and taught all of us how to “make do” when we maybe felt like we had less than we needed. In today’s world of lockdowns and pandemics, grandma’s wisdom could not be any truer.

All of us struggle with our troubles and demons. For some alcohol and drug addiction consume their lives. For others, it may be another addictive behavior. What a miracle when a person can turn their life around and walk a path of sobriety and help others stuck in the same spot. This is dedicated to my cousin's son, Chase, who lost his battle with addiction a few weeks ago. For every one who gets sober and has another chance to live life, there are many who lose the battle. Pray for the family and friends left behind.                           This song is copyrighted.

Today is Election day in the united States. It is one of the more emotional days for me as a voting citizen. This year it seems has been built up more than ever to go out and vote. Voting is one of the greatest rights we have as citizens of a free country. So go, before the day is over, and vote your conscience. It is your right and your duty. And remember what grandma said.."If you don't vote, you can't complain!".

I like Facebook and Social Media. I like to stay in touch with family and friends that aren't close by......except during election time. If everyone could just see things my way, it would be a better world for us all. I say that jokingly, but during this time, during a very important election, and where our country is going, it is quite true.

I long to get back to pictures of new puppies and frolicking kittens, and families having fun. But for now, in order to make a more perfectly calm brain, I need to take a break from social media.....and yet I can't. I am too hooked on the memes and stories and the comments on social media. God help me.

Many states have mandated the wearing of masks in order to get a handle on the spread of Covid-19. Whether you agree or disagree, there are factors that make it hard to function in a society of masked people. While trying to do our part, it helps if we can take into account that masking can cause a disability to those that are hearing impaired person.

Monday mornings this past Summer have been filled with teaching guitar, ukulele, percussion and putting together music to any grandchild that is interested. Surprisingly, I have had multiple takers on the offer and we have had some fun jam sessions with 12-13 of the kids together on a Sunday afternoon barbecue. This recording was one of the older kids, first take and she did pretty good. What a blessing to be able to pass on playing and making music to the next generation.

Just today, it was reported our president and wife have tested positive for Covid-19. This podcast was set up before knowing the news. How many people were exposed to Covid during the rallies he brought to MInnesota? How many people refuse to heed the advice of the CDC regarding masking and social distancing? Our numbers are going up in MInnesota, over 100,000 positive cases and close to 2000 deaths.

This is a little rambling on what we can do to maybe get Covid under better control. It is up to all of us to do our part.
