Titus 2:1-8.

Yesterday, I mentioned that our world loves a leader with a “golden tongue,” one who can captivate and impress audiences with the way they speak. However, have you ever heard someone give a speech who was phenomenal in his or her delivery and really connecting with the audience, but thought, “Wait a minute, something doesn’t quite check out here. This doesn’t seem quite right”?

When we’re talking about Christ’s church, it’s not enough to be a great speaker. The message itself needs to be in line with the teachings outlined in Scripture. Paul told Titus, “You, however, must teach what is appropriate to sound doctrine” (v. 1). If the teaching is in line with Scripture, then the fruit will be evident in what it teaches the hearers to do. You can read examples of what lives devoted to this doctrine and teaching look like as you read the rest of Titus 2 and other places in Scripture.

If our teaching is in line with sound doctrine, it will lead others to live lives of humility, self-control, generosity, and deference to others. In other words, it will lead others to live a life worthy of Jesus.
