Drew Silverstein is the co-founder and CEO of Amper Music which is a tool based on artificial intelligence that empowers anyone to create unique and professional music instantly. It’s a very cool tool for people who want to create music for their videos or any other application but might not know how to do it nor have the money to hire someone else to do it for them.

Having a tool like artificial intelligence that makes music-making easier and cheaper can be very valuable but can also be very disruptive to an industry that relies on composers for library music, for example.

However, technology will always make things easier and more accessible, so why should the music industry be immune to that? In fact, it never has.

It’s a super interesting topic and it was a pleasure talking to this and more with Drew and I hope you will enjoy our conversation as well.

In this interview, we spoke about:

• How AI will take over library/stock music and the lower tier of music production

• Functional vs Artistic music and how we value music

• How we can embrace and take advantage of AI in the music industry

• The fear of losing your job to AI

• Favourite books and how Drew has implemented some of them in his life

• If Amper will be able to create vocals for your projects

• How Drew views quitting vs staying persistent

• How Amper’s technology was created

• Favourite failures and the importance of failing forward

Mansur Zennelli is one of the guitarists in the progressive rock band, Closure In Moscow. If you haven’t heard this band and you are into kick-ass riffs, songs and great progressive rock, check them out now.

I first discovered Closure In Moscow around 9/10 years ago and when their Pink Lemonade record came out I was hooked. I also saw them live at The Garage in London a few years ago which was awesome.

That gig sadly ended with them being robbed of their passports and then they played next to the terrorist attack that happened at The Bataclan, which left them ending their tour shortly thereafter. But you will hear Manny talk more about this in the interview.

It was awesome talking to Manny and despite the lag due to the distance between Melbourne and London, I hope you will like this interview too.

In this interview, we spoke about:

• Writing Pink Lemonade and taking a different direction from First Temple

• Being independent vs signing to a record label

• How they achieved the heavy guitar tones of That Bhramatron Song

• What young bands should be on the lookout for when signing a record deal

• Then playing in Paris at the same time as the terrorist attacks happened at The Bataclan

• Dealing with anxiety

• The sacrifices they had to make to get where they are today

• Having a job to support yourself and your music

• New music coming from Closure In Moscow

It’s a pleasure to welcome back Ethan Winer to Your Audio Solutions! Ethan is back to further bust audio myths that can help you save money and to not succumb to placebo effects in your studio or in your favourite listening position (e.i., audiophiles).

This interview is partly a continuation of our previous and very popular interview which you can find here: Ethan Winer - Busting Audio Myths And Why Dave Pensado Was Tricked

Ethan Winer is well known in the audio industry with his many articles for major sound magazines as well as with his book The Audio Expert (Check it Here). Ethan has also been active at AES with, for example, his popular Audio Myths presentation (Check it Here).

In this interview, we spoke about:

  • If you can tell the difference in the quality of converters by running them hot or clipping them

  • If recording in a higher sample-rate improves the antialiasing filtering in converters

  • If you need to “burn-in” your new speakers or headphones

  • How you can null-test plugins such as EQ’s in your daw and if it’s possible to null-test sample rates

  • Why the emotional impact of using, for example, different sample rates as suggested by Mixerman should not be included in scientific testing

  • If Paul McGowan from PS Audio is correct by saying that Ethan’s null-test is fallible

  • What Synergy is and if it, in fact, has an impact in audio

  • If you should worry about using 16bit over 24bit resolution for your recordings

Steve Ouimette is a music composer and has worked on games such as Guitar Hero, Ghost Recon Corrido, The Crew 2, Just Dance, Call Of Duty Modern Warfare and many others.

Steve also made the popular cover of The Devil Went Down To Georgia by The Charlie Daniels Band which was one of the end-battles in Guitar Hero 3. His cover has over 10 million views on YouTube.

Steve has also developed a very cool recording technique he calls forensic re-recording. This is where he digs deep into how a song was recorded by finding out what gear and what instruments were used in the original recording.

Check out one of his forensic re-recordings of Earth Wind & Fire’s - Let’s Groove below. It’s killer and it sounds almost identical! Link below.

In this interview, we spoke about:

  • How Steve started out in the industry and how Guitar Hero was the first game he worked on

  • The forensic re-recording technique that Steve developed to re-record authentic covers for the video game Just Dance

  • Tempo-mapping songs that are recorded without a click and how you can use this trick to enhance your own songs

  • Which song he found most difficult to re-create

  • The biggest difference between older and modern songs

  • The pain of using Pro Tools

  • If a $25 dollar pick is better or just different than your normal pick

  • How his speakers from Amphion has improved his studio and why he uses 4 subwoofers

And much more

On the show today we have the number one lady in guitar shredding, Mrs Smith.

If you don’t know who she is, she was kidnapped by a Norwegian death metal band and it was in her captivity that she developed her fierce guitar skills.

Also, not that long ago, she battled Metallica’s lead guitarist, Kirk Hammett, in a Wah-off for the title of the biggest wah-wah abuser. I must say, with Mrs Smith’s operating 4 wah-wah’s at once Kirk didn’t stand a chance.

It was a pleasure talking to Mrs Smith and I hope you will like this interview too!

In this interview we spoke about:

  • Guitar shredding

  • Guitar players such as Steve Vai and Yngwie Malmsteen

  • Her beloved cat, Carlyle who has been missing since last Tuesday

  • Tiger King and why she thinks it’s a disgraceful show

  • Being kidnapped by the Norwegian death metal band and how she got rescued

  • Battling Kirk Hammett in a wha-off and how Sweetwater helped her build the 4-in-one wah-wah pedal

  • How she recorded her EP, Introducing Mrs Smith, at home

  • Using amp-simulators vs real amps

  • She also shared some details about her new up-and-coming album and much more

If you want to increase your client base and be able to do music and audio for a living, you need to stop buying more gear.

I know it can be hard to resist, especially when Waves has a sale on every day and their new plugins look cool and interesting. I fall for it sometimes too.

However, buying more gear will not bring you more clients. Buying the latest microphone, plugin, or hardware unit will not help you get more clients and earn more money.

Gone are the days when clients are looking at your gear lists when deciding if they want to work with you.

In this episode, I’m also giving you some great book tips that have been very beneficial to me and that I’m sure can help you too.

Do you agree with me or not? Do you need more gear? Let me know by sending me an email at niclasjeppsson@gmail.com

In today’s episode, we will discuss why you need to work on your home studio and not in it. According to the author of The E-Myth Revisited, Michael E. Gerber, the small business (home studio) owner is usually divided into three different personalities. The entrepreneur, the manager and the technician. However, we spend most of our time in the “technician” personality. This is detrimental to the small business (home studio) owner because we need to involve all three personalities to succeed.

In this episode you will learn:

  • The fatal assumptions we as entrepreneurs do when starting out

  • The difference and the importance of The Entrepreneur, The Manager and The Technician

  • Why this is important for you to develop and think about

  • How this allows you to take your home studio or freelance career to the next level

  • And how this can give you more time in your day

A few days ago I came across this story on Reddit about a guy who spent over $30,000 trying to make it in the music industry. He is now broke and has started a job at a bistro.

It was a fascinating story about trying to pursue one's dreams and making a career in the music industry.

Unfortunately, this story didn’t end in success (yet) and that’s why I think it’s important to tell stories like this. Because not everything ends with success. At least not in a way you thought about it in the beginning.

In this episode, we also discuss why it’s important to define what success means to you and why you have to adapt to your surroundings and be able to diversify.
