Do you think the guy that gave the donkey to Jesus right before Palm Sunday in Matthew 21 knew that his gift would be used by God in such a memorable way?
I'm sure not what it is for you, but I really think you have something God can use if you'll let him
I have this friend who is a long distance runner (seriously, it's actually a friend. Doug Hannah and distance runner don't belong in the same sentence.) He had some really great insight of how he handles running that applies directly to how you and I can handle our day to day lives.
You may feel like your worth is in question today. But good news: your worth is in safe in the hands of your maker.
In a world filled with chaos and uncertainty, we all have a longing for peace. The search for solace and tranquility has led many on different paths, byt the most direct route to achieving true peace lies in the ability to communicate with God directly.
If I could make a list of the greatest things I could get, grace when I least deserve it is the best. If it's that impactful in my life, why would I keep from giving it?
Maybe you haven't thought of it this way, but at this momet, you have all-access to the most powerful name is all the universe: Jesus Christ.
In need? Call on him.
Hurting? Call on him.
Lonely? Call on him.
He's yours today.
There's so many things in our lives that can cause us very real fear, but here's one thing that you never have to be afraid of.
In the face of our failures, we have a choice. We will we focus on the size of failures and sins or, instead, will we put our focus on the size of our Savior, Jesus?
I know life may be totally crazy for you at the moment, but if you get a minute, stop and think about someone who been a good friend to you. Maybe you're still friends, maybe that friendship was only for a season in life. But think about the ways they were there for you.
And if you feel like it's been a long time since you've had that friend, you have the opportunity to be that friend to someone else today.
Occasionally, a little bit of envy creeps up in my life. It could be over somebody else's job or somebody else's calling. It could be someone else's or something that we just wish was ours and it’s not. When that comes up, I find it helpful to ask myself “If God wants that person to have that blessing, why do I get concerned about that?”
In those moments I think it’s important to remember that God has each of on a unique path and have been given a unique calling by a one-of-a-kind God.
When I think of all the beautiful gifts I've received in my life, the gift of grace from God stands out above the rest. It's so good, God calls us to regift it.
At the end of the, it really is all about God's amazing, perfect, saving grace. And no matter how long you are a Christian, you never graduate from it. We all need it. Each and every day.
To whom it may concern,
You will never find your value by digging through the pile of opinions of other people. Even those who you are close to.
Sincerely,
Someone who's tried.
Tomorrow really is a gift. It's a gift from a God who offers some incredible possibilities. I know we don't know each other that well, but my prayer for you is that you won't allow the disappointment of today to spoil the amazing gift of tomorrow for you.
I want you to know something today that may not agree with what your inner voice tells you: You can't let God down. Not that you won't, you literally can't.
What is it that you need today?
Well, whatever it is, Jesus fulfills all of those needs and more. If you've got Jesus, you've got it all.
I have this friend. He's probably one of the wisest, most thoughtful people I know. He also doesn't speak with a whole lot of certainty when discussing the thing he sees around him. Those two things are actually connected in my mind.
There's alot of wisdom in being able to say "I don't know."
There are 3 ancient guys with some funny sounding names who have a great lesson for us about what it looks like to trust.
Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego are pretty well known, but we want to share their story with you in case you're not familiar with them. They are characters in the Old Testament that can be found in chapter 3 of the book of Daniel. They were essentially commanded to worship an image of gold that was set up by King Nebuchadnezzar or were to be thrown in a blazing furnace if they refused, which they refused. When asked by the King if this was true, this is what Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego said:
"If we are thrown into the blazing furnace, the God we serve is able to deliver us from it, and he will deliver us from Your Majesty’s hand. But even if he does not, we want you to know, Your Majesty, that we will not serve your gods or worship the image of gold you have set up.”
Did you catch that phrase of trust? "But even if he does not"? Should he deliver them, awesome. If he doesn't deliver them, then so be it because their trust was not in the outcome, it was in their God. We don't always get what we want from God, but we will always get the God who loves us.
Sometimes we can get stuck living in our past. It's kind of a natural thing. But in those moments we just can't let go, we communicate something to God that just isn't true...
For a lot of us, Memorial Day is day of relaxation and BBQ. But for way too many, this day stings because it's a reminder of what is no longer here: a loved one who gave their life in sacrifice for something bigger themsleves.
Today I stand with those who are hurting, I pray with them, yet I'm reminded of the one who gave his life in sacrifice so that we may see our loved ones again. Thank you, Jesus.
At the end of it, when your faith becomes sight, you'll never hear a word about your success from Jesus. You'll never hear about your level of influence or how hard you worked.
In the kingdom, what success boils down to is surrender and faithfulness. Well done, good and faithful servant.
I'm going to go ahead and guess no one has said this to you today, but I'm going to say it because it's the truth: You are beautiful to God. Even in your weakness and your shortcomings, God loves you.
Jesus's last words as he was hanging on that cross were not "make it worth it."
Nope. They were "It is finished." Our guilt is finished. Our unworthiness is finished. Our sins are finished.
It really is finished and that is THE good news for you today!
I've got a dentist appointment next week and whenever I’m scheduled to go to the dentist, I spend extra time brushing my teeth. I try to do a good job so I will make a good impression. So I do extra scrubbing, extra flossing, and extra work to make myself look good to the dentist.
The only problem is that when I arrive, the dentist is not satisfied with my good works.
This wonderful story told by Max Lucado brings me a lot of hope today. I pray it also does for you.
Hurt never feels good. I would never recommend it, but without, we never truly come to appreciate the joy of healing.
Maybe you're just doing your best today and don't feel like your best is enough with all that you're dealing with.

Hope it was a wonderful Mother's Day weekend for you but I know it's filled with a lot of mixed emotions for a lot of people, including our family.
Though it was an tough day without mine or my wife's moms, something really interesting happened that turned a sad day kind of sweet.
I think all of us are looking for connection.
Some of us will try to find that on social media. Maybe these days, that’s the most common way we try to connect with others.
But, there are a few things that can get in the way of real connection. One happens on social media a lot.
If I put a veneer or gloss over myself to hide what I really don’t like about myself, or what I think YOU won’t like – if I try to make myself look better than I really am or just like a less flawed version – connection becomes difficult if not impossible. Social media – as fun as it can be – really encourages this.
I’m learning that the first step is to just drop the veneer...take the filter off...be a little humbler and kinder to myself and others.
Then, often, people feel they can connect with me more. When I’m not trying to be so Insta-Worthy.
Another beautiful thing about doing this: it takes the pressure off everyone.
Myabe you're facing something that feels scary. Maybe in that thing you feel like you're walking into it alone. Here's a truth that will never change: You will never go where God is not. Plain and simple. It's a 2,000 year old promise.
Some reflections to encourage you on the loss of my mother, and how I used it (by God's grace) to share a blessing with my children (her grandchildren). You can do the same.
Now that my kids are bit older, I look back on my years of parenting fondly for the most part, but there's of course a couple of regrets. This one sticks out above the rest.

This week, as I buried my mother, I thought a lot about the question, "How do people deal with death if they think this life is all there is?"
Just about the ONLY thing that has kept me from breaking down (other than just God's sheer mercy even when I couldn't see it) is the knowledge that this is NOT the end.
As a believer in Christ, my mother LIVES.
I hope you are OK today. If you're not - that's understandable...and OK.
Our entire community is shaken to the core, and rightfully so.
It is in these times of shock, sadness, confusion, and frustration, that I CLING to words like these.
My mom's funeral is tomorrow and in the month that she's been gone, there's something I've found that I've just clung to when I thought the grief was going to swallow me up.
Is there something you're praying for right now that feels unrealistic? Too big? Well, in the presence of the King, that's something you don't need to worry about.
Have you ever been listening to someone talk and you feel like they're speaking specifically to you?
That happened to me recently at church in one of my pastor's sermons and I think the challenge he issued is something you could benefit from, too.

People ask me how I'm doing since the death of my mother. I'm planning the funeral for this Saturday.
The answer is: I'm thankful for everything I have and all the people in my life.But, I am also barely keeping my head above water and terribly, terribly sad. Both are true. And right now, that's okay.

Letting go is so tough and, sometimes, really painful. For a number of reasons. And accepting that it's time to let go of something is the hardest part.
But I've found more times than not even when it doesn't feel good, it's good for me. It might be for you, too.
I just lost my mom to a long battle with Alzheimer's and though I know the power of the resurrection, it still hurts. I've cried my fair share of heavy tears. I'm really glad I have a savior who knows how to realte to me in that, as well.

What is worry?
There are a lot of different answers to that question, but one of the better definitions I have seen is:
Worry is the belief that God is somehow not going to get things right.
When I say it out loud like that, it becomes more obvious how absurd worry can be. Because God ALWAYS gets it right. So maybe calling worry out for what it is will help me to stop. –Do you really believe down deep God's going to get and make things right in your life? Even if that day is not today?
Because he is. He promised.
Do want to do something counter cultural today? Something just radically different from what our wold looks like?
Forgive someone who doesn't deserve it. Unconditionally. Like Jesus does.
Early last Wednesday morning, my mom, Annemarie Murdock, was received into the church triumphant. A baptized child of our Father, she closed her eyes to this life and opened them to see Christ.
We saw her just last night. My wife reminded her that we loved her, that we would be OK, and if she was ready to be with Jesus, we were ready to say “see you later”.
We hurt. But we hope and believe.
My mother is not dead. She lives. Praise be to God. She is with her Lord, who is the resurrection and the life. That is our confidence and our consolation.

Pretty much everything nowadays is filled with hype. Commercials, advertisements, social media. I just feel kind of used to being lied to. That's why God approach is so refreshing.
I've never considered myself much of an expert in high fashion really (nor would anyone, for that matter) but I was recently told of how lace was spun in world-renouned shops in Belgium and it sure reminded me of the provision of God.
Hey there. It's me, Doug Hannah. The man who has found the secret to true happiness. But here's the thing, it's not much of a secret at all.
I saw something on social media that caught my attention
.It said, “You can't pour from an empty cup.” There is a ring of truth in that, for sure. Self-care is crucial. The problem still persists, however. Sometimes, LIFE ITSELF empties the cup of our own strength
-- and the truth is that's often the best place for us to be.
I don't know what your circumstances look like at this very moment, but I can say one thing for certain. God is good and is worthy of our praise, even if our present looks less than ideal.
Has it ever occured to you that Jesus could not care less what the world or other people think about you? He is all in on you and his actions back it up.

I was sitting down with my daughter the other day who is now a mom of 3. Just like the rest of us, she just worried about all that's going on in the world. We talked about it and kind of came to the conclusion that there's alot we just don't have control over.
But instead, what we can focus on is doing what we're called to do. The calling that God has placed on us is where I believe he wants us to keep our eyes.
It may not cover the whole world, but it'll cover the world he's called us to cover.

There was an acrobat who was pushing a wheelbarrow while walking on a tight rope across a raging waterfall. But then, something really crazy happened....
Back on September 23, 1857, a man named Jerimiah Lanphier started a noon prayer meeting right in the heart of New York City. About 6 people were in attendance. A couple of weeks later, the largest financial crisis in United States History to date occurred and in the days following, more than 3,000 people gathered for noon time prayer. This prayer movement spread and as a result, over a million people came to know Christ in a years time.
I hope and praying nothing like this financial crisis happens again, but my takeaway is this: In the middle of hardship, it's not our need for God increases, it's our awareness for our need for God that does.
When you must go through trials and suffering today -- as we all will on some days -- you will not be alone.
I guess some would call this ancient wisdom. It is pretty old. (It comes from the 5th century!)
However, as you read this – you tell me – is this relevant for 2023?

Doug here. The bosses told me "Hey! You need to get a podcast episode out!". They were nice about it. I feel bad about the gap in episodes. But the best way to fix that is create an episode! This episode - some reflections on the real faith it takes to be a grandparent, which is very unique to that of being a parent, I have found.
Plus, a timeless kid joke - as written by my 5 year old granddaughter.
My goal is to encourage you as a grandparent. Gimme 10 minutes.

Is God able? Is he able to take the broken pieces in your life and put them back together? Yes, he is and he often does. But rarely does the healing process of those pieces happen neatly in my experience.
Sometimes life still looks broken after the healing. It looks scarred. Like Jesus.
Hospice tells me it’s quite possible my mom just has days left. Only the Lord knows.
These are hard times, but God has been good to us. Thank you for your prayers for our family. I would not wish Alzheimer's on my worst enemy.

Something I've learned along the path of my life (maybe you have to) is if you focus on the hurt, there's a good chance you'll just continue to feel the sting of that hurt. But if you can focus on the lesson, you've got a chance to grow.
If you find yourself in a tough season of life, I can relate. You learn in the tough seasons and difficult trials that like side mirror, God is closer than he may appear. He's with you.
I should have known this day was coming, but it doesn't make the reality any less hard.
Maybe you need to hear this today: Mistakes happen. It's okay. Sometimes you try your best and things still can go sideways. It means your human.
In my experience, it's not if mistakes happen because that's not really in my control. What I do have control over is my choice to ask God to help me learn from my mistakes.
It seems like I get to talk to alot of people who are in the frustating time of waiting and there's not many things more frustrating that waiting, is there?
But you can take comfort in this today: just because it feels like nothing is happening doesn't actually mean that nothing is happening. In fact, God is never still.
Just in case you have your doubts today, I don't think there anywhere in the Bible that you'll a example of Jesus being disappointed in you.
Prayer is so many things: it's a lifeline, a conversation starter, a safety net. But above all else, I believe it's our confidence as God's adopted childen.
If we look back at our lives, there have been a few times where you've been up against something and, incredibly, God moved that mountain your life. But there are other times where that hasn't been the case. The mountain wasn't moved. But here's some good news: God isn't just an expert mountain mover. He's also an expert mountain climber.
It doesn't feel like a big shift, but our entire prayer experience changes when we make this one tweak.
I saw something just the other day that might as well have been straight out of super-hero movie.
Incredible.
Just a moment of total honesty: As I go about the course of my day, I forget God. I'm not proud to admit that, but I do.
I'm so glad God never forgets about you and me.
Because God is the ruler and judge over all, that mean we don't have to be. I don't know about you, but that brings immense relief!
If you're anything like me, then you might worry a lot about tomorrow's problems. But I've got some good news for you and for me today.
Shame can be such a burden that feels too heavy to carry. I'm just here to tell you today that God is here to carry that load for you. He sees you and he loves you.
What happens when life falls through the cracks? What happens when we feel like we're left with nothing but shattered pieces? We still have the most precious gift of all: God's love.
One of my favorite authors (and people for that matter) is a guy named Chad Bird. He wrote a book called 'The Christ Key' and today I want to share some words that have been particularly helpful and healing to me.
Author C.S. Lewis wrote the book 'Mere Christianity' back in 1952. But there's this quote that has stuck with me that could have absolutely been written today. Hope it impacts you the way it has me.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with coming to God with things you need help with. In fact, he wants us to. But I've found if I start my day with these 2 words before I do anything else, it really does make a difference.
I'm not always full of useful tips, but here is something you need to try on a Wednesday coming up that you can thank me later for.
I don't care if you have the best joke known to mankind, in my opinion, there's nothing funnier than this.
At the end of our lives, what do we all wish to hear? "Well done, good and faithful servant" perhaps?
Here's the good news: Because of Jesus, you will. He's your clean slate.
Sometimes when we look at our life, it may not look anything like how you thought it would. But that doesn't mean it's not still good and that God's plan is somehow not still good. You can trust him.
I know it sounds kinda strange, but stick with me here. There's never been a point in time where God has been, somehow, surprised by your human-ness. He knows you and loves you.
I love what the late, great Dallas Willard had to say about giving your best each day. I hope you will, too.
I've come to this realization as of recently that I don't need to worry about not being enough in any particular situation. God's enough and that's enough for me.
I suppose every day, and every moment of every day, we have choices to make, and it gets exhausting sometimes.
But there is a daily choice we need to make. It is crucial. Most other choices will flow from this choice. Are we going to focus on our trials, or focus on trusting God for his promises in those trials?
George Mallory was a British expeditioner who took part in the first 3 climbs ever of Mt. Everest, the highest mountain in the world, about 100 years ago. Many have since made it to the summit, but many also lost their lives trying.
One of his team members wrote these words as they tried to rise to the top of the mountain, and I think they have a powerful word for us today.
He wrote…
“Mt Everest, you defeated us once; you defeated us twice; you defeated us three times. But Mt. Everest, we shall someday defeat you, because you can’t get any bigger but we can.”
Don’t let the mountain win.
Are you feeling a little bit (or a lot) like you can’t get seem to get your act together?
Even if that may be true (you’re probably being too hard on yourself, but let’s go with it for now), the truth is….your identity is secure and completely intact…because of Jesus.
In Christ, WHO you are matters infinitely more than anything you do or don’t do!
What if someone today heard you say “I want to be your friend. Just as you are.” How could God use that? Listen to see how Jesus did exactly that for someone who, honestly, really didn’t deserve it.
Before your feet hit the floor in the morning, this is a good prayer: “God, before I even start this day, I surrender my emotions to you. I want you to be Lord of my feelings. I want you to control my mind and my emotions.”
It isn’t easy. But this is what happens when we do:
Confidence
Fearlessness
Hopefulness
Freedom from worry
God’s love really can fill your life and cast out your anxiety and fear.
Job 11:13-18 says, “Surrender your heart to God, turn to him in prayer, and give up your sins—even those you do in secret. Then you won’t be ashamed; you will be confident and fearless. Your troubles will go away like water beneath a bridge, and your darkest night will be brighter than noon. You will rest safe and secure, filled with hope and emptied of worry”
It probably isn’t hard for you to find or think of someone in your life that is hard to like, let alone love.
But anytime we’re faced with this challenge, there’s a FIRST STEP that is crucial.
Priscilla Shirer sat down and wrote something that I thought was insightful. Maybe you can relate. She called it “If I Were Your Enemy”.
One of the most comforting verses in all the Scriptures is Isaiah 42:3, “A bruised reed He will not break; and a smoldering wick He will not snuff out.”
Our Father is not the kind of God who weeds “lower performing” people out of His kingdom. If your faith that isn’t what you’d consider great – that matters less than WHO your faith is IN.
In fact, bruised reeds and smoldering wicks are especially cared for because of your fragility. Your brokenness. God isn’t going to extinguish what little you have in terms of faith. He’s going to be moved by it.
Remember: Jesus always leaves the 99 to find the 1.
Even a little bit of faith holds fast to the same, strong, Jesus!
This isn't easy for me to talk about.
But I need to know I'm not alone. That's the whole point in talking about it.
How can you get good at celebrating the moments in your life where God is making you stronger? How can you get good at FINDING those moments where you're a doing little (or a lot) better than you once were?
Start celebrating! At the very least, acknowledge it. Things don’t have to be perfect to be celebrated.
I thought it might be good for such a time as this to hear from a voice who always spoke hope and truth to us in all situations.
That voice is Billy Graham.
He said this a long, long time ago, when the world's challenges were different. But in so many ways, they are the same today. It’s highly relevant, and will be until Jesus returns.
