Our modern version of the ancient Greek word "believe" is a shadow of it's original meaning. In modern times, "belief" means firmly hold an idea or philosophy. In ancient Greek, the word "believe" is an action verb and a practice. Jesus taught a discipline of belief with specific steps, not just a philosophy.
