Imposter syndrome is when you worry that others will find out you’re a fraud, an impostor, who’s not intelligent, competent, talented, or interesting enough. You’re convinced that you’re unworthy of your accomplishment, position, or accolade. You feel like a fake and will be found out.
Here are some thoughts of a person who believes he or she is an imposter:
Who am I to be doing this? What will people think? I don’t belong here. I don’t deserve this promotion. What are they going to say? They’re going to find out that I’m really not who they think I am.
How can Imposter syndrome affect you?
-Doubt the validity of your achievements -You have chronic self-doubt -You fear failure -You push yourself too hard -You need to be in control -You talk yourself out of celebrating accomplishment -You don’t like to ask for help
In preparing for this episode, I found a good article by Melody Wilding. The imposter syndrome has now been categorized into 5 sub types by Dr. Valerie Young. Dr. Young wrote a book called: The Secret Thoughts of Successful Women: Why Capable People Suffer From the Imposter Syndrome and How to Thrive in Spite of it.
