If the eyes are the windows to the soul, the inner spirit may need some yellow shades. Potentially damaging blue light was once only a problem for eyes subject to sun overexposure, but modern eyes are bombarded by blue light from endless device screens at all hours of the day and night. The yellow pigmented macula in the back of the eye can protect against blue light, the effects from which accumulate throughout life, but the nutritional foundation for the macula in the modern diet—the carotenoids lutein, zeaxanthin and meso-zeaxanthin from spinach and other green leafy vegetables—has not kept pace with the soaring blue light exposure. James Stringham, Ph.D., University of Georgia, talks about what his eye health research has revealed about how supplementation with these carotenoids can help protect the eye and vision from blue light exposure.
