When I emailed the subscribers of my quarterly print magazine, Juiced.GS, announcing that the March 2025 issue had been mailed, one of them wrote back with a non sequitur: would I want to be a guest on his gaming podcast?
Retro Game Club has been playing, reviewing, and discussing retro games since February 2019. Each episode looks at one game in-depth while also covering the latest news and updates from retrogaming. Previously co-hosted, the show is now the sole production of Rob Shelby.
The game that was picked for my episode was Shadow of the Colossus, which remains in my backlog; I didn't have much to contribute to that discussion. The episode instead became a mini-profile of my history in gaming, from competing in the Nintendo World Championships, to working at Blockbuster and GameStop, to launching the Gamebits newspaper column and then YouTube channel.
It turned out this wasn't my first "appearance" on Retro Game Club — last year in episode 170, they cited my annual Computerworld feature when discussing the passing of Lode Runner creator Doug E. Smith.
The game I picked for the next episode's hosts to play was the Apple II CRPG The Magic Candle. That episode is now out, and I'm looking forward to hearing what they thought of it!
Thanks for having me on the show, Rob!
