In the Torah, God healed the Israelites from snake bites when they looked up at the bronze serpent—not because it had power, but because they repented and trusted Him. This week we looked at what happens when the Author of the Torah explains His own words. Standing where Moses first gave the Torah, Yeshua reveals God’s heart behind it all. The Pharisees tested Him on divorce, but instead of choosing sides, Yeshua brought them back to the beginning—God’s original design for faithfulness.
The Torah made concessions because of human weakness, but Yeshua shows us the Author’s intent: covenant love from creation. The question for us is the same—are we looking for loopholes, or are we trusting God’s design?

There are two types of Chesed (loyal love) in the Bible: Chesed in relationship to God and Chesed in relationship to other people. We often desire kindness and mercy for ourselves, but justice for other people. There is nothing God wants more than to pour out His Chesed on those who know they don’t deserve it. When you know you don’t deserve it, and you are shown Chesed by God anyway, you can freely share Chesed with those who don’t deserve it in your life. Israel has a unique calling from God to be a blessing to the nations. This calling is extended to all Jewish people whether they follow God or not, and it can be seen in science, mathematics, art, education and entertainment. There is no word for "obey" in ancient Hebrew. The word "Shema" is most often translated as "Hear" or "Listen" but it really means "Hearing & Doing." When we are careful to listen we do what we hear! The Patriarch Abraham is considered to be the “Father of Faith”. When we think about his legacy, we rarely think about the role hospitality played in his life. His act of hospitality in Genesis 18 shows us that God rewards those with welcoming spirits! As we serve God by serving others, God will expand our relationship with Him while opening up opportunities for ministry that will both attract and heal the brokenhearted!
Choosing to move towards being a fully devoted follower of Yeshua will not make us immune to circumstances that may cause us to experience suffering. When we choose to follow Him, He can redeem the pain and hardships that everyone will inevitably face in life. Instead of allowing despair to take hold of us, He can show us how perseverance can grow our character. God wants to lead us to hope that will never disappoint us!
Peter teaches us the importance of living in humility, standing firm in our faith during periods of trial, and casting our worries on God. Do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will take care of itself. As followers of Yeshua, we do not deny that there are legitimate fears in the world. But even in the midst of trials, tribulations, pandemics, and circumstances that we can’t fully explain, God has given us all that we need to live well. And after…God Himself will restore, support, strengthen, and establish us.
The Gospel is counter-cultural. Peter tells us that, at all times, we are to keep our conduct honorable, submit ourselves to proper authority, show respect to all people, and love the family of believers. When we do good things in difficult times, we show the love of God to the world, and we show the world how to live by faith over fear.
Peter reminds us that we can live well in the midst of fear, anxiety, trials, and yes, even a global pandemic. In fact, God often uses times of adversity to refine us, and help us grow into people who live by faith instead of fear. We don’t ignore fear, but we also don’t run away from fear. Rather, we face fear through the faith that we have in Messiah Yeshua.
The story of the Good Samaritan is often taught to us as if we don’t know our neighbors and that we need to be told how to treat them. We want to answer the question “who is our neighbor” in order to avoid helping them. Yeshua tells the story to remind us that we need to be people who live what we believe and act with mercy and compassion for everyone because everyone is our neighbor.
The way to let God into every area of our lives is to learn to worship Him. He wants us to learn that getting to heart of worship isn't just singing songs in a large room together but instead a lifestyle. To worship is to feel in the heart and express in some appropriate manner a humbling but delightful sense of admiring awe. In the middle of a pandemic we need to find moments of worship in every part of our day!

In Psalm 16, David sings the words, "so my heart is glad and my soul rejoices. My body also rests secure.” Who doesn't want that?! Especially during a pandemic when it is hard to find gladness, joy, rest and security! While there is always hope in despair, it is also ok to despair when the world around you is falling apart. We know that on mountains and in valley's God keeps His promises to His people and in a season of disorientation, often, we can hear Him speaking more clearly!
The parable of the Prodigal Son is not actually about the prodigal son, but rather, it's a story about a father and his two sons. So many followers of Yeshua believe they are good, moral and ethical people, but then they judge everyone else who isn't as good as they see themselves. Yeshua tells this parable to help us not act like the Elder Brother in the story and learn to show grace to those who need it most.

Even in a quarantine, God’s desire is to bless you with Shalom. His blessing goes far beyond you and extends to all the families of the earth in the name and the power of Yeshua. Every person is made in the image of God and so is designed by God, for Shalom. Let’s not rush back to “normal” without Shalom in our hearts and minds. With that, we can share it with every person we come in contact with even in a pandemic.
Part 2 of the Hope of Israel: We continue to examine the harvest holiday, Shavuot. In Jewish tradition, Shavuot is the day that the Torah was given to Moses. In the New Testament, Shavuot is the giving of the Holy Spirit. Same day; and it’s no coincidence! Many see the birth of the church and Christianity in Acts 2, but what really happened according to the text? God made himself known as the hope of the Jewish people. It all took place in the Temple Courts in Jerusalem, spoken in Hebrew on the day of Shavuot, so that the Jewish people could invite the Gentiles into the family of God. It was God's plan to save the whole world, Jew and Gentile, because everyone belongs in the family of God!
In Jewish tradition, Shavuot is the day the Torah was given to Moses. In the New Testament, Shavuot is the giving of the Holy Spirit. Same day and no coincidence! While many believe Acts 2 is the birth of the Church the disciples understood that what happened to them there was equal in importance to what happened on Mt. Sinai. It was the empowerment by the Holy Spirit that gave them the revelation to preach the Gospel for the first time to Jewish people, in the Temple courts, in Jerusalem! Today, the Holy Spirit still empowers followers of Yeshua to turn from our sins, lead us to better living and save us from judgement.
Yeshua had to ascend to heaven so He could take His place at the right hand of the Father. He went to prepare a place for us and send us send His Holy Spirit. What we learn from the Apostles is how to worship and wait on God which is exactly what we need to do during this pandemic.
On the day Yeshua rose from the dead, He appeared to two of his disciples but they didn't know it was Him. Blinded to His true identity, they expressed sadness because of failed expectations. Yeshua explained to them why He had to suffer and die according Moses and the prophets. This is a Jewish message about a Jewish Messiah who offered Himself as a sacrifice for His Jewish people! These two travelers were eyewitnesses to the suffering and resurrection of Yeshua and some of the first to preach the Gospel.
Through Peter's story of denying Yeshua before His death and his reinstatement by Yeshua after His resurrection we learn how grief and trust are designed to work together. Like the Jewish people and Peter, God wants to raise you up, restore you, and rebuild you to the person He made you to be!
Thomas, one of the original followers of Yeshua, became known as "doubting Thomas." The truth is, God met Thomas in his pain, suffering & doubt so that he could believe and be an eyewitness of Yeshua's death and resurrection. Today, God wants to meet you in your pain, suffering and doubt right in the middle of all that is happening in the world. So, How do you deal with all the feelings you feel during a pandemic?
Yeshua warned the Pharisees about self-importance and hypocrisy, and His warnings apply to us today. Both Yeshua and Paul use leaven, yeast, and Matzah in the very same way Moses used them to teach people to rid our lives of wickedness and find purity and truth. If you follow Yeshua you are Matzah! But you still have to do the work to get the leaven out of your heart! This message will show you how.

During the days before Passover Yeshua gives His disciples a "new" command that is really an "old" command. He said to them, "love one another as I have loved you." Starting with the first Passover event God made it clear that He loved us, His people, and that He wanted to give us freedom as an expression of love. Today, as followers of Yeshua, and as we celebrate Passover during this worldwide pandemic we ask ourselves, "What does love require of me?"

Right before Passover, Yeshua raises His friend Lazarus from the dead. For four days Lazarus laid in a grave until Yeshua called Him out of his tomb. In John's telling there are many miracles that Yeshua performs and Lazarus' resurrection is the last sign of who Yeshua is, the Messiah of Israel. There are those who look backwards to the glory of the past while others look forward with hope for future. Often, as is true here, both groups miss the miracle that happens right in front of them. As we approach Passover, even in the midst of a pandemic, we find comfort in the past and hold to hope for the future but let's not miss the opportunities we have in the present to celebrate who God is. He has done great things, He will do great things, He is doing great things right now!
Habakkuk reminds us that every person, even a prophet, struggles to believe that God is good when there is so much tragedy around us. Habakkuk's short letter is in the literary style of lament, and it ends with the great hope and joy that we can find in God, who saves us! We recorded this conversation a week before the "Stay-at-home" order in Washington, and it certainly speaks hope into our current circumstances.
