When we want to connect with people about the Christian faith, the questions of God's existence, justice and the way the world around us seems to work against a vision of flourishing, the questions can be insurmountable. When something is lost, when someone is in trouble, the Bible tells us that we should turn to God for the answers. But the lived experience of many Christians is not that way. Rob Spurr and the Prophetic Finders ministry do exactly that - they ask God where people and things are. Seem overly simple, or an excuse to not do anything practical? That might be, until you hear from the Lord on people smuggling and break up human trafficking rings! In this next episode of our Talking Justice series, Rob shares with Ps Jo & Ps Robyn both the journey into and daily practices of listening to God to help people find hope. There's so much to do that comes from effective prayer!

Reading the Bible can be simple, but oftentimes we are faced with words, ideas and language that isn't instantly accessible, particularly in the Old Testament. This episode of Going Deeper features a sneak peek of our most recent Bible Streams episode, "Our Heart Songs 2: Hebrew Poetry with Robert Alter". Jo and Alex Walker (Bible Streams host) speak with world-renowned author and literary expert Robert Alter on how to read Hebrew poetry. Enjoy this snippet from their conversation.

From Bible Streams: "In episode 2 of our series on the Psalms, Jo and Alex are joined by Robert Alter to discuss how to understand Hebrew poetry. Robert is an Emeritus Professor of Hebrew and Comparative literature at the University of California in Berkeley and has written numerous books on Hebrew literature, including the Art of Biblical Poetry. Robert has translated the Hebrew Bible into English along with a full commentary on the text, and his love for the richness of the Bible comes through in our conversation. Thanks to Robert for giving us his time and his thoughtful insights."

Art and it's creation can be one of those wonderfully unknown things. Where does inspiration come from? How does each different artist recieve it, and translate that into what the rest of us get to experience? Dr. Lindsay Farrell was a regular guest on our Going Deeper podcast and it is with heavy hearts that we acknowledge the recent passing of Lindsay into the arms of the Father last week. To honour a life well lived to the glory of God, in this episode we are rebroadcasting a previous episode (one of our favourites), 'Resurrection Life'.

Lindsay was an artist, art historian, scholar and lover of Jesus. In this special episode, Lindsay speaks with Jo and Scott about the unexpected turn in the trail: a recent diagnosis of an aggressive brain tumor. Lindsay speaks candidly about living well and finishing well, about what really matters, and about living out the love of Jesus in all seasons of life. Lindsay's story will confront and challenge your own thoughts about our resurrection, life and death, and life after life after death in Jesus, and most importantly, asks us what we are doing with the time that God has given each of us.

Our reaching out to others for Jesus is the natural expression of a daily walk with the Spirit. It's the softness of our hearts toward the Spirit's prompting to love others that makes ways for others to encounter the love of Jesus. Glenda Condon walks this out every day, and as she tells us, it's still a risk, but it's one that's worth taking!

2020 has proven to be an unpredictable year! Even people's best-laid plans can come to nothing when global issues change the playing field. Yet, we know that God isn't surprised by any of this, and so did we hear Him properly when we planned 2020? We welcome Senior Pastor John Robertson back to the podcast to talk through what 2020 will continue to look like for Riverlife, and how we can each engage with what God has put before us: to be released to declare and demonstrate Christ's kingdom.

Released on Maundy Thursday of Holy Week 2020, Jo and Scott look at the Christian hope we have in the events of the first Easter. Maundy Thursday is traditionally the day that Jesus washed the disciples' feet, showing us that the God who stepped into our human existence came to serve us, not be served, and so shows us the way to live that brings life and dignity to people. In the times we are living in, hope, humility and a demonstration of love for others have never been more important.

Scott and Jo take some time to talk through what faith looks like in the face of an escalating global phenomenon. With COVID-19 cases growing daily, and in many countries any large gatherings are being banned, what does it look like to follow Jesus and be a part of His kingdom community when everything changes?

Hope has a name: Jesus; and we experience it when we seek His presence and find community with His people, the church. The church is and always has been, a family of people, not a place to meet.
