Welcome to this week's episode with Richard Hayes. You're in for a long one. He is a researcher in agricultural science, discussing his work on pasture management and legume crops on the Farms Advice podcast. He shares his journey into agricultural science and his passion for working with pastures. Hayes explains the importance of attention to detail and timing in farming and offers advice for maximizing farm productivity.
He also discusses his research on serradellas, a type of legume, and their potential benefits for grazing and cropping farms. Additionally, Hayes talks about the Clover for Bees project, which aims to identify legume species that are beneficial for honey production. He emphasises the need for collaboration between the honeybee industry and the broadacre industries to optimise pollination and sustainability. In this conversation, Richard Hayes discusses the importance of sowing rates and the use of coated seed in pasture establishment.
He emphasises the need for farmers to adjust their sowing rates when using coated seed to ensure the appropriate number of seeds are planted. Richard also discusses the benefits of lime application before sowing and the impact of lime on pasture establishment and persistence. Advising farmers to assess their sowing success and strike rate by counting the number of seeds that germinate and adjust their sowing rates accordingly.
Richard also highlights the importance of managing soil moisture, timing of sowing, and the need for an evidence-based approach to pasture management. He suggests that farmers should treat their pastures as mixtures rather than crops and focus on utilisation and growing good quality forage. Richard also discusses the limitations of soil moisture probes in pasture establishment and the importance of attention to detail and timing in pasture management.

John Hill, co-founder of Land Watch Australia, shares his journey of starting the company and the various applications of their camera systems in agriculture. The primary segments they serve are security, water monitoring, and bushfire monitoring. They are also exploring the use of AI to enhance their camera systems, such as detecting unusual behaviour and providing alerts. The information from the cameras is delivered through their app or integrated with other dashboard portals like FarmBot. The market for their products is diverse, including cattle producers, big stations, and anyone looking for reliable and durable camera systems in rural areas. Land Watch provides camera monitoring systems for agricultural properties to prevent theft and monitor livestock. The adoption of ag tech, such as surveillance cameras, is driven by the need to protect valuable assets like livestock and fuel. Reporting stock theft is crucial, but often underreported, and Land Watch aims to encourage farmers to report incidents and provide evidence. The company installs camera systems that are connected to the homestead through a wireless point-to-point connection, ensuring a secure network across the property. Land watch's goal is to become a household name in agricultural security and protect Outback Australia.

AgriPilar is a young farmer from Spain who is involved in both her family's pistachio farm and her boyfriend's farm. She studied agricultural engineering (agronomy) and is passionate about farming and the countryside.
AgriPilar has built a following on social media, where she shares her farming experiences and educates consumers about agriculture.
She sells her pistachios directly to consumers through her online shop, bypassing intermediaries. She is also experimenting with cover crops to improve soil health and prevent water evaporation. Spain has a diverse agricultural landscape, with different regions specializing in forage production, cattle farming, grain production, and tree crops. Spanish agriculture is diverse, with different regions specializing in different crops such as citrus fruits, nuts, and horticulture.
Olive production is also significant in the southern part of Spain. The weather conditions, including rainfall and frost, play a crucial role in crop yields.
Getting into farming in Spain is challenging, as starting from scratch is nearly impossible without family support or existing farms. The cost of land is high, making it difficult for new farmers to afford their own land. Spanish farmers face challenges such as unfair competition from imported products that do not meet the same requirements, limited access to phytosanitary treatments, and high prices of wholesale products.
The farming community is concerned about the loss of family farms and the lack of support from politicians who do not understand the realities of farming. Technology adoption in Spanish agriculture is increasing, with the use of solar panels for energy and anti-freeze systems to protect crops from frost. Farmers are also exploring opportunities in agtech.
Spanish farmers rely on traditional sayings and the calendar to guide their farming practices. Pilar is working on a project to establish a small factory to produce sub-products from pistachio production, such as pistachio paste and essential oil. She emphasizes the importance of not being afraid to pursue farming as a dream.

G'day farmers. This is a great episode where we dive into agtech solutions and how they're working to solve your problems on-farm. Farmers2Founders are delivering a range of projects and initiatives to support producers, agtech companies and trusted intermediaries to overcome adoption barriers.
As has been widely discussed across the industry, adoption of agtech is critical for producers to remain productive, sustainable, and competitive. However, many producers are still struggling to identify and adopt agtech that delivers real benefit and agtech companies struggle to understand producers’ real problems.
In this episode, we will speak with Ben Baghurst, the newly appointed General Manager of F2F, about the F2F TEKFARM initiative which seeks to identify industry challenges, build capability, and accelerate adoption of sustainable solutions in the global agrifood tech value chain.

Welcome to the Farms Advice podcast. This is our little recap for the last three years. We actually forgot it as we always tell other farmers to reflect on how far they've come on their journey in their career and we actually missed it our very selves. So apologies on that. You probably don't care too much, but I'm pretty happy to reach the three years or Farms Advice because it was the actual time frame that I gave myself before I said I'd quit if it wasn't working and I definitely think it's working. I've had some solid feedback from across farmers businesses and even people keen to get into farming all over Australia and even now across the globe and for backpackers as well looking to find appropriate farms for them. It's really cool platform I believe and we're really keen to build on top of this so keep on farming and pass on that Farms Advice you've got stored up in your noggin.

Welcome to the Farms Advice Podcast. In this episode we'll look into how Australian cattle producers can become more efficient with Max Laurie. This is part of the Optiweigh series ran on the Farms Advice Podcast. We've had amazing feedback about this series and how it has clarified from producers end, from agistment blocks 400kms away to dealing with consultancy clients right across the East Coast of Australia. This is the perfect episode to cap off what was a great series with one of the best Australian tactics on the market. It was built by an Aussie farmer that runs his own enterprise of cattle on the family farm, Bill Mitchell.
The problem of weighing cattle is one that every Australian cattle producer has at some point. Bill wanted to look into this a little bit further and by 2019 he had something that was commercially ready for others to benefit from. Just like the Farms Advice Podcast, Bill wanted you to hear the same conversations that we have with the experts in the industry, so that you too could benefit from what information you got out of it.

Farmers2Founders series where we dive into the adoption of agtech from the perspective of an Australian agtech startup who had seek support through the F2F programs. In this episode, we will speak with Matt Anderson, who manages the agritech projects at F2F, about the various adoption challenges we are seeing play out in the industry for agtech companies, as well as Jennifer McKee who is the founder of agtech company called Spades, a digital tool to streamline farmers records management and compliance. Adoption is typically perceived to be a farmer’s problem as they are reluctant to take on new ideas, practices and technology. However, F2F flips this argument on its head, believing that agtech companies also play a critical role in the adoption process and are often poor at demonstrating the value of their product or service for farming businesses, and being able to justify their cost / benefit of that solution.

Blokes, BBQ, Bonfire, Beers, Bonding, Bullshit
Welcome back to Farms Advice podcast Farm Yarns segment. With this farm yarn redial behind the audio of our guests and this week we had Bradley mills tied on the podcast. Bradley set up the organisation or group of #6BS. He set up incorporating six important elements that he thought would be be able to establish an initiative that would allow blokes within agriculture and regional Australia to open up. For the use of Blokes, BBQ, Bonfire, Beers, Bonding, B**, he made it all happen.
Running through what motivates bread and keeps him turning will be very similar experience to what others out that out there are feeling with family at the heart of everything that we do. Brad maintains the best way to improve the family dynamics is through improved communication and this can really come from the 6Bs as we first outlined.
If you like this episode make sure you subscribe if you haven't already and share it with your mates, with the blokes in your life so that they may be able to improve their daily routine.
Visit 6bs.com.au and farmsadvice.com.au for more episodes.
This is a special episode and a timely reminder for the blokes working in the industry that we're able to open up and there will be someone else out there who is going through or has gone through what you're experiencing. I find with the podcast I get to see a glimpse into working lives of farmers and blokes on the episodes but rarely have many actually opened up but quite recently I've learnt a trick or two where we can break down these walls.
I invite any guests to come on and be transparent as possible not only about successes but what's been bloody hard for them to. For listeners to sit back and hear someone else going through what they are or feel the pain that they have can bring us closer together. I really want to use this podcast to better improve our communication as blokes but also as an industry.
A huge thank you goes out to Bradley who became so open for this episode but also the #6Bs that he would of held. Follow them on Twitter and see the cause of 6bs.com.au.

#AUSSIEGRAIN4UKRAINE CHARITIES NOMINATED Australian grain producers have chosen the charities that will help deliver humanitarian support for Ukrainian farmers and their communities, from grain donated from this year’s harvest.
The #AUSSIEGRAIN4UKRAINE appeal was announced earlier this year with a farmer-led Grain Producers Australia (GPA) sub-committee formed to drive the fundraising campaign.
The sub-committee has now approved the UN Crisis Relief's Ukraine Humanitarian Fund and World Vision Ukraine Appeal to provide targeted support for farming families and communities in need.
The World to Rebuild Rural Ukraine program has also been chosen to specifically help rural communities and farms with rebuilding efforts, and Oxfam International.
Sub-committee spokesperson and WA grain producer, David Fulwood, said a number of suggestions were received and assessed by the sub-committee with these four charities determined to be the most effective for delivering real support.
“One or two tonnes of grain donated from this Aussie harvest will make a huge difference for Ukraine farmers and their families, to help them get through this crisis.”
Australian grain producers are being urged to donate grain delivered from this year’s winter harvest via a dedicated Grower Delivery Card, registered to GPA, in the National Grower Register system.
The Grower Delivery Card in the NGR is numbered 1500 4442 and registered to GPA.

G'day farmers, welcome back to another cracking episode of the farms vice podcast. On this episode we take a snippet out of the financial blokes podcast. I was recently on his episode to discuss the journey of Farms Advice podcast and how I have gathered different pieces of information across the different 115 episodes with Jess from all across Australia and a few across the globe. Ben is very keen on passing on the Farms Advice so I think him for having me on his podcast as he is at the very start with his podcasting journey as well.
Coming from a family farming background in the Liverpool Plains New South Wales, Ben was able to put together his knowledge of farming and business into a career or financial advising and now in to his current role. G'day farmers, this week we yarn with Daniel Fischl from Eartrumpet Consulting and Padardis as a form agtech for the viticulture industry. Daniel opens up his thoughts to be challenged and looking for outside information. When you put 50 winemakers in a room you're going to receive very similar answers. He looks upon the indigenous ways of managing landscapes and water through 1000s of years of knowledge being built up.
Did you like this episode? Can relate to what Daniel goes through as an early stage startup as the result of 25 years of knowledge in the labs and now out in the vineyards across the world. Daniel looks to journal articles within and outside of viticulture. He loves to go to global farmers to see how he can take the expertise or #FarmsAdvice of how they run their own operation.
Wine recommendation is Linnaea as their own brand hitting the market from Melbourne. Take these questions and answer them youself and see what you come up with. Maybe, even put it to your farm team!

G'day farmers, welcome to this weeks episode where we dive into agtech within vineyards but with all the similar concepts and values of broadacre and livestock farmers. We have Daniel Fischl on from Padardis, which is a new agritech company derived from years of research in the lab and now more so in the vineyards. Daniel is fighting a much needed problem within viticulture and how vineyards can save time, costs and preserve their flavours by utilising their toolkit on their own enterprise.
With a cracking example in this episode we find out that the amount of watering either increase or decrease can dramatically impact the flavour, taste and value of the wine on offer from the vines. This weeks Farm Yarn is with Gavin O'Brien and Jack Cresswell, the host of the Farms Advice Podcast. We dive into who the person is behind the audio with this yarn and see who inspires them, where they find the motivation and the resources that up skill them. Gavin O'Brien started out on sheep stations in the Riverina of Southern NSW.
From his morning routine of looking out the window to see what he's dealing with. Just like most farmers, if it's rained overnight the kettle goes on and out measuring the mm. To his first memory on farm dealing with Suffolk sheep with the old faithful sheep dog. Listen to find out the full story.
Just like others in and outside the industry Gavin is inspired by those who have "made something their own, and taken it to the next level". Relating this back to Australian agriculture, we have the top 10% producers who have the right attitude towards growing their agribusiness. Really enjoyed this episode and we're getting a lot out of these new segments of Farm Yarns.

G'day farmers, have you compiled your tax for 2021/22 financial year? We'd hope you're coming to the end of it as we wrap up another financial year for the Farms Advice Podcast. Today on the show we hear from Jack Hayes from the team of Byfields Business Advisers. This time of year is manic for accountants and usually farmers getting their crops in for the season. Tune into this episode and let us know what you'd like to know for the 2022/23 tax year.
FMD Definition: The Farm Management Deposits (FMD) scheme allows eligible primary producers to set aside pre-tax income from their primary production activities during years of high income. The income can then be drawn in future years as needed. Primary producers can include FMDs as part of their risk-management strategy.

This farmers, is a fantastic episode to wrap your ears around for the hours in the tractor. Whether you're still going in the tractor planting this years crop or you've luckily finished and enjoying some early rain especially along the East coast of Australia. Dr. Paul Melloy is a research fellow out of University of Queensland and has had his hand on the pulse for plant disease and how farmers can identify and prevent yield loss in their own crop.
Paul goes through the different apps available that are discussed on the episode so take a look and download if they're for you:
Blackleg canola manager (BlackLegCM) BlacklegCM- Blackleg Management App | Agriculture and Food
Sclerotinia canola manager (SclerotiniaCM) SclerotiniaCM - Sclerotinia Management App | Agriculture and Food
Yellow spot wheat manager (YellowSpotWM) YellowSpotWM - Yellow leaf spot management | Agriculture and Food
Stipe rust wheat manager (StripeRustWM) StripeRustWM | Agriculture and Food
Powdery mildew mungbean manager (PowderyMildewMBM) PowderyMildew MBM - Powdery Mildew management app for mungbean | Agriculture and Foo
The team is also working on delivering new crop disease models, such as: spatial risk of black spot in field pea; net-blotch in barley, Ascochyta blight in chickpeas and the soon to be released upper canopy infection tool in canola (UCI BlacklegCM).
The Grains Research and Development corporation (GRDC) are funding this work and anticipate if these apps are more widely adopted grain crop yield losses of at least 10%, due to disease, could be saved.
The “Disease epidemiology, modelling and delivery of management decision support tools” project I am working on is led by Jean Galloway and includes collaborating institutions and experts from across the country. All our models are built on up to 30 years of research trial data from all major growing regions.
You can catch Paul on Twitter at @PaulMelloy as this is where we found him for the podcast. Twitter can be a great resource for you as a farmer or someone who services the industry to stay connected and abreast of what is happening in the paddock or in the lab modelling for plant disease as Paul Melloy has been doing.

In partnership with Agworld we bring you this episode. It is as diverse as it gets from the Tasmanian soils proving their worth with the types of crops that Michael farms alongside his family and his one time full-time worker. From his wheat to potatoes paddocks we dive into what drives his operation. In his area potatoes are king! With the recent 50mm it's a bit short of their usual rainfall of 1250mm each year.
Michael had thought that moving to Agworld would be a good decision for his farm to reduce the amount of paper work when looking at compliance for high valued crops and also ensuring he knows what has happened and what activities have been.
Types of crops they have on farm:
Fun fact: Their average paddock would be around 10ha and they hold the record for highest yielding wheat crop in Australia at 13.1 tonne/ha.

G'day farmers and welcome to this week's episode with Pip and skate Lawson. This week we dive into how they have grown their little flowers into a little side hustle of their farm. Operating to different companies they have learned a lot along the way, Their journey of value-adding to their farm is only at the beginning. With more products on the way, there are definitely ones to look out for. They had a problem with cracked lentils from the dryer finishes and severe frosts that they saw that they were seeing diminishing returns from their crop. I hope that you can get something out of this episode and use it for your own farming enterprise. Let me know if you like this episode as will be getting a lot more on in the future make sure to share this with your mates.

G’day farmers and everyone in between. We’ve called in the big guns and are speaking with Pip Courtney. You may have seen her on your Sunday’s ABC Landline series presenting the next best Aussie farmer. In this episode we’ll dive into her role and how she got there and also the stories she has covered. Listen out for the common traits of people that she has seen to of succeeded in the farming game. We both sort of lost track of time on this one and let it roll. You’ll have to extend your lunchtime break for the thing one. Also, don’t forget to share this one with your mates. Let’s get into it.

G'day all farmers, this episode has it all when it comes to livestock as we talk to Monica Ley of Canowie Poll Merinos. She only just held the annual ram sale which had great results and was able to do it during covid restrictions with all measures in place agriculture is able to keep the show on the road. As a young livestock manager who has lived in more states than most people have visited it's great to see Monica's viewpoint. From working with DPI she was able to work on a range of tasks but she felt she wanted to be a little bit closer to the action. Listen in to this one.

G'day farmers! On this week's episode we speak with Pieter Van Jaarsveld. From starting out in Aussie ag with this family moving to Australia to becoming a 2021 Nuffield Scholar with his research into rangeland goats. With the limited travel during covid times, he has focused on the domestic market for his research. With goats a money-spinner for large pastoralists and farmers across Australia this is one to listen to and also follow along with Pieters Journey. He looks to establish solid foundations through the associations and genetic lines within his herd and the countries. There is a bit on his plate so let's get in and see what he’s up to.

G'day Listeners!
On the show today we're speaking to talking to a new sector that is ready to flourish. Qponics is based up in QLD working closely with the University of Queensland to develop another consumable protein and omega-3 alternative without smashing the ocean with fishing nets. From 1 hectare of shallow algae pools they're harvesting 30,000kg. It's got a little bit on wheat and barley where you need vast amounts of land to break even or supply enough to feed the world. It's a great conversation talking with Graeme as he's sooo passionate about what he is doing and wants to do. With solid backing, they're well on their way to going to market. Can't wait to try out the products made from the Qponics algae.

On this week's Farms Advice Podcast we speak with Dwain Duxson who is working hard within Australian agriculture so it's excellent to have him on as a podcast guest. He is the founder of FarmTender and DelayPay. He really likes communicating with people and particular farmers. With his family livestock stud, he saw that he was limited to the number of clients and prospects. He wanted to reach further and provide value for more than what his livestock stud could cope with and leaned towards the internet of things in the early stages.

Farms Advice Episode #7 brings you the larrikin of Mick Gould. With so many "influencers" it is excellent to have Mick marching for agriculture for Aussie products and even for collaborative policymaking between the split industries. You may have seen him on the Married At First Sight and he isn't shy of getting his kit off for a good cause. We got him on the show as he is doing wonders for Australian products trying to find the right end consumer with Greenshirts QLD. He goes into how he has remained the same person after increasing popularity from being on the show with 1.1 million tunings within Australia. He has a small hobby farm and has some good aspirations to become a big-time sheep farmer. Don't miss this one!

Farms Advice talks with James Brouff about his personal story of how he got to where he is today within banking and finance in the agribusiness sector. James has continued his studies through his working life to continually improve his position and add to the knowledge bank. He has been able to use his networks to grow professionally and to mold his way of leadership as part of a team at the Regional Investment Corporation. It was excellent speaking to another farmer gone corporate to see him making waves within his own niche.
It isn't easy to get to where he is today and is important to point out how he got there to others who may be thinking of jumping into the deep end of the banking and finance world of Australian agribusiness. James is a modest man and holds himself within his role as a Senior Credit Manager. The importance of farmers to be able to relate to someone like James goes a long way when speaking about finance. If you are off the farm or working within agribusiness it is important that you are a part of the finance and the "books" so that you are able to stay on top of it.
