What Inspired You to Write Your Book?
THE CYCLONE RELEASE is loosely based on my own two-year stint at a tremendously successful startup company from 1999 to 2001, a period that taught me a great deal about life, work, and the human condition, and I wanted to explore these lessons more deeply, and ultimately share them with the world. I wanted to write this book to help readers understand that Silicon Valley is not a business model or a tribe of young billionaires infecting our society as they pack their offshore accounts; it’s a place with a distinct culture and history all its own. It’s a place where regular people toil daily for reasons that are universally human: security, dignity, and a need to belong, to be part of something larger than oneself.

How Did You Come up With Your Characters?
Like most fiction writers, I develop characters based on people I've seen and known, both in my life experience and in popular culture. I also think the best fiction writers, those writing really honest fiction, can also find pieces of themselves in their characters, and I'm no exception to that. Beyond that, I wanted a diverse cast, so I mined my life experience for people from diverse backgrounds: not only long-time Californians (as I myself am), but also immigrants from Germany, Vietnam, and India, and one prominent character whose family came to the U.S. from China.
