What Inspired You to Write Your Book?

I was inspired to write this book due to two things: 1) My over 25 years of experience as a leader in ministry and the marketplace and 2) a strong desire to come alongside leaders of all ages and contexts and help them grow and excel as leaders.

Where Are Our Leaders?

One does not have to strain too intently to see that our world is in dire need of quality and credible leaders. In every field of endeavor there appears to be a collective cry of “Who will lead us?” The necessity for good leaders is both a biblical and historical one. Whether in the church or families, businesses, government, or other organizations, we understand that entities and institutions rise and fall based on their leaders’ effectiveness. Whether national, locally, or personally, good leadership is needed in times of crisis and chaos. People need to know where to turn, who to follow. The question of “Who will lead us?” also implies a concern for the quality and character of those who lead.

The incidences of leadership failure for a whole host of reasons are numerous. We have witnessed leadership failure in the Church and at the highest levels of our nation’s government, with tremendous repercussions and implications. From sports to entertainment and beyond, the examples and actions of those who have failed to live up to the high standards of leading well are plenteous and glaring.

In the absence of quality leaders, we experience a leadership vacuum where people are inclined to do things independently or with little collaboration. People may work in groups but with little coordinated effort or effectiveness when the way forward is not clearly defined. Also, leaders may exist who are perhaps ineffective and weak and, in turn, not respected by those seeking guidance. When that is the case, people are inclined to do what benefits them while continuing to ask, “Who will lead us?” The implications of this are dramatically affecting many. Just as nature abhors a vacuum, people detest a lack of credible leaders.

It is an undeniable reality that when leadership fails, in any aspect of life, followers are decimated, scattered, and become open prey for whatever may take advantage of them. The Lord Jesus Christ speaks to this in Matthew 9:36. Upon seeing the multitude, He is “moved with compassion for them, because they were weary and scattered, like sheep having no shepherd.” Moved with pity and sympathy for these leaderless people, Jesus is touched by their condition. They were bewildered, harassed, distressed, dejected, and helpless. Having no shepherd meant they had no leader. And in the absence of credible, quality leadership, lawlessness abounds.

The need for leaders to lead well is evident for many reasons, and for them to remain credible, they must embody and exemplify certain timeless qualities. #LeadWell seeks to highlight those leadership qualities for readers to reflect on and study over a 31-day period. Some readers may discover some completely new ideas along the way. Others may meet some old traveling companions with which to get reacquainted. In either case, it is hoped that the book will inspire you to grow in ways to take on board qualities that are vital to leading well. One of the considerable benefits of this kind of growth is that it will make you better aware of patterns of behavior to avoid, and if you have fallen into any, how to overcome them.

Leadership development is a process and not an event. Being effective as a leader over the long term requires continued growth. It is what a leader learns, does, and passes on each day that will keep unlocking his or her full potential as a leader. In order to remain effective and productive, leaders must continue to grow in quality ways. This 31-day devotional for leadership development is the “sowing of seed” with the expectation of “a harvest” that will result in you leading well.

This book is not a light version of devotional reading. #LeadWell intends to make you dig deep and supplement your regular devotional time. One of the ways I hope you will do that is to go beyond the devotional material to the Father in prayer and further study in the Word of God. I also hope that you will go beyond gaining cognitive knowledge, despite all its benefits, to experiential or applied learning that produces quality change and growth. To improve the quality of those who follow Christ after us (1 Corinthians 11:1), we must influence them through our example. So ready yourself to be challenged, provoked, and experience dramatic increases in your leadership capacity and function.

To conclude, my purpose in writing this leadership development devotional is to encourage and inspire “growing” leaders to continue in their leadership journey. We have not arrived. But when we do reach our destination, we will all give an account of how well we have led. So my purpose in writing is also about stewardship. Those of us gifted, entrusted, and called to lead well must do so as stewards. God determines the measure for leading well, or leading others. I hope that at the end of our time together you will be more and more inclined to grow in such a way that God will commend you for having led well when you reach your destination.
