Now we may be biased but as the US Open approaches we think Aaron Rai stands out as one of the most accurate and reliable players on the PGA Tour. His precision off the tee and on approach shots make him a formidable contender for this year’s championship at Pinehurst Resort. Let’s have a quick look into his exceptional 2024 Tour stats and discuss why we think he’s THE player to watch at the US Open.

The Accuracy King: Aaron Rai’s Standout Stats Going Into The US Open1. Fairway Percentage * Aaron Rai leads the PGA Tour with an outstanding fairway percentage of 72.42%. This means that nearly three-quarters of his tee shots land on the fairway, setting him up for optimal approach shots. 2. Good Drive Percentage * Aaron also tops the charts in good drive percentage at 88.70%. This metric, which considers drives that either land in the fairway or the green in regulation, highlights Aaron’s consistency and strategic play. 3. Approaches from 75-100 Yards * Aaron’s precision extends to his approach game. He ranks first in proximity to the hole from 75-100 yards, with an average distance of just 3 feet. This ability to stick his approaches close to the pin will be crucial on Pinehurst’s challenging greens.

For more detailed stats, you can check the PGA Tour’s official statistics and Aaron Rai’s specific stats.

Preparing for the US Open at Pinehurst: A Test of Skill and StrategyIt will be Aaron’s first time back at Pinehurst No. 2 since he was a junior. Pinehurst is renowned for its difficult layout, demanding both precision and strategy. With its crowned greens and tricky rough, players must bring their A-game in accuracy and course management. Aaron’s skill set aligns perfectly with these requirements. His ability to consistently hit fairways and greens, and his past experience on the course, will give him a significant advantage.

We emphasise the importance of consistency and accuracy in our coaching methodology, principles we have honed with Aaron over the last 18 years. Our tailored approach focuses on building a repeatable, reliable swing that maintains accuracy under pressure. This preparation is critical for handling Pinehurst’s undulating greens and tight fairways, which require precise shot placement and strategic thinking.

Why Accuracy Matters: Rai’s Approach to the GameAaron Rai’s game is built on meticulous preparation and precision. His consistent driving accuracy and exceptional approach shots are not just stats—they are a testament to his disciplined approach and work ethic. Aaron’s focus on accuracy over sheer power is a refreshing approach in the modern game of golf, which often emphasises power over everything.

Aaron’s discipline is evident throughout our practice sessions together and his attention to detail on the course. This meticulous preparation has paid off in his ability to consistently perform under pressure, as seen in his top rankings in various accuracy metrics. His mental toughness and strategic play have also been key components of his success, allowing him to navigate the most challenging courses with precision and confidence.

His accuracy and consistency in getting onto the green means that he only needs to nail his short game to be a serious contender for the US Open win. We’re confident his disciplined approach will ensure that he can remain calm and execute his game plan effectively. This week, we are working intensively with Aaron on refining his short game, ensuring that he is fully prepared to capitalise on his precise driving and approach play.

Join the Journey with Me and My GolfAt Me and My Golf, we believe in harnessing the power of precision to improve your game. FAQsWhy does Aaron wear two gloves? It started as a necessity when he was younger. Playing in cold, often wet, conditions in his home country of England, two gloves meant he could stay warm and maintain his grip. He played with two gloves for so long, that when he tried to play with the standard one glove he struggled to perform at the same level. So he embraced the unusual style and made it a core part of his game to this day.

What is Aaron Rai’s practice routine like?Aaron Rai’s practice routine is rigorous and focused on precision. He dedicates significant time to both his long game and short game, emphasising accuracy and consistency. His practice sessions often involve repetitive drills to perfect his swing mechanics and ensure that his muscle memory is fine-tuned for various course conditions. Rai also spends time on mental preparation to enhance his performance under pressure.

How has Aaron Rai performed in major tournaments?Aaron Rai has shown promise in major tournaments with his steady and strategic play. While he is still seeking his first major championship win, his consistent performance and past wins at the Hong Kong Open and Scottish Open make him a strong contender. His disciplined approach and ability to remain calm under pressure have earned him respect among his peers and golf analysts, positioning him as a player to watch in the upcoming US Open.

It looks effortless when watching the top professionals strike their irons and sounds so pure as a huge divot flies down the fairway. But how do they do it?

Well, there are lots of factors when it comes to puring your irons, but I’ve decided to show you 3 main reasons we see golfers struggle to get this elusive strike.

1. ConceptConcept is key! If you have the wrong concept or image in your mind of how to play the shot then you are going to produce that image when it comes to the motion.

We still see lots of golfers trying to help the ball in the air with their irons and when we ask them where the divot should start they often say before the golf ball and we also hear comments like “I didn’t get under that one”.

This really shows that many golfers have a poor concept of what they actually need to do to play the shot successfully.

Understand that the loft is there to produce the height on the shot, our job is to get it moving forward, hopefully towards the target.

The majority of the divot will be after the golf ball and to do this, the club head is travelling down when we strike the ball. This, coupled with a centered hit, is what produces that sweet sound and pure strike.

This mental image now allows you to produce a better motion and move closer to those tour pro’s!

2. “Open Club-Face”The club-face is largely responsible for the starting direction of the golf ball, therefore has a huge influence on the rest of the golf swing. This links ‘faults’ 2 and 3 closely together.

If the club-face gets “open” during the golf swing then we have to make compensations to try and square it up at Impact.

This often results in a poor downswing sequence, a quiet lower body and even poor shaft lean at impact. These all contribute to the club “bottoming” out too early, resulting in a poor strike.

Poor wrist angles at the top of the swing are a common one that we see among golfers.

When the lead wrist gets too “cupped”, the club-face can open and the toe will hang down too much. It becomes very difficult to create a good downswing sequence from here, so it is a great “position” for you to check in the mirror or on video.

Look at creating a more “neutral” lead wrist at the top of the backswing so that the club-face at least matches the lead arm (if not slightly stronger). This alone will now give your body a reason to move without the need for compensation and makes it far easier to deliver to club to the ball with a slight downward hit.

This moves perfectly to our final fault.

3. Hanging BackThis is one of the most common ‘swing faults’ we see as coaches and it’s basically leaving too much weight on the trail leg at impact, and, as we mentioned in fault 2, your club face plays a huge part in helping that weight shift.

When it comes to starting the downswing, we want the body to move laterally towards the target and rotate so that at Impact the majority of weight is on the lead leg. As you can see from the image, the whole of my lead side is nicely in line. This again helps the golf club bottom out after the golf ball. If you can see daylight between the line and your body then you are considered to be “hanging back”, making it hard to get that ball-then-turf strike from there.

For beginners, building a good golf swing is the first and most crucial step towards playing and enjoying the sport. A well-executed swing will significantly impact your performance on the course, making it essential to learn and practice the right techniques from the very start. In this blog, we’ll delve into essential golf swing tips for beginners, providing you with the foundation to build a consistent, effective swing. Whether you’re just starting out or looking to brush up on the basics, these tips will help you start your journey right.

The Basics of a Golf SwingBefore diving into the nuances of a perfect golf swing, it’s important to understand the fundamentals. A golf swing involves several key elements: grip, stance, backswing, downswing, and follow-through. Each part plays a crucial role in ensuring that your swing is powerful and accurate.

The Importance of Mastering the BasicsNailing the basics of the golf swing is like building a strong foundation for a house. Without a solid foundation, any structure is bound to falter. Similarly, a golfer must focus on perfecting these fundamental elements to develop a reliable and repeatable swing. This section will provide an overview of each part of the swing, setting the stage for more essential beginner golf swing tips and techniques.

Grip and StanceThe grip is your connection to the club, and it’s essential to find one that feels comfortable for you. There are three main types of grips:

  1. The Overlapping Grip: This is the most common grip among golfers. It involves placing the pinky finger of your trailing hand (right hand for right-handed golfers) over the index finger of your lead hand (left hand for right-handed golfers).

  2. The Interlocking Grip: This grip is popular among players with smaller hands. It involves interlocking the pinky finger of the trailing hand with the index finger of the lead hand.

  3. The Baseball Grip: This grip is often used by beginners or those with weaker hands. All ten fingers are placed on the club, similar to holding a baseball bat.

Finding the right grip is a matter of personal preference and comfort. Experiment with these grips to determine which one allows you to maintain control and feel connected to the club throughout the swing.

Perfecting Your StanceA proper stance provides the foundation for a balanced and effective swing. Here are key points to consider:

Feet Position: Your feet should be shoulder-width apart, providing a stable base.

Knees: Slightly bend your knees to allow for flexibility and movement.

Weight Distribution: Distribute your weight evenly between both feet, with a slight favor towards the balls of your feet.

Spine Angle: Maintain a straight spine angle by bending slightly at the hips. This posture helps you rotate your upper body correctly during the swing.

A solid stance ensures balance and stability, allowing you to execute your swing with greater consistency.

Swing MechanicsBackswingThe backswing sets the stage for a powerful and controlled downswing. Here are some tips to help you execute a proper backswing:

  1. Start Slow: Begin your backswing slowly to maintain control and balance, don’t rush!

  2. Rotate Your Shoulders: Focus on rotating your shoulders rather than lifting your arms.

DownswingThe downswing is where the power of your swing is generated. To achieve a powerful downswing, consider the following:

  1. Lead with Your Hips: Initiate the downswing by rotating your hips towards the target. This motion should lead your upper body.

  2. Maintain Lag: Keep your wrists cocked as long as possible during the downswing. This creates a “lag” that releases at impact for maximum power.

  3. Follow Through: Ensure a complete follow-through to maintain balance and control.

MYTH – “Keep Your Head Down or Still”: Keeping your head down or still is common advice you’ll hear from other golfers but it’s not helpful. Opening your head and body towards the target in the downswing will actually help you generate more power and strike the ball better.

Follow-ThroughA complete follow-through is crucial for a successful golf swing. Here’s why it matters:

  1. Balance: A full follow-through ensures that your swing remains balanced and controlled.

  2. Direction: It helps guide the direction of your shot, ensuring accuracy.

  3. Power: Completing your swing maximizes the power generated from your swing mechanics.

Common Mistakes and How to Avoid ThemOver-SwingingOver-swinging is a common mistake among beginners. It occurs when a golfer tries to hit the ball too hard, resulting in a loss of control and accuracy. To avoid over-swinging:

– Focus on a smooth, controlled swing rather than brute force.

– Practice tempo and rhythm to develop a consistent swing.

Poor AlignmentProper alignment is crucial for accurate shots. Poor alignment can lead to misdirected shots and inconsistent performance. To maintain good alignment:

– Use alignment aids such as clubs or alignment sticks during practice.

– Regularly check your stance and aim before each shot.

Building Consistency in Your SwingConsistency is key to improving your golf game. Here are strategies to help you develop a consistent swing:

  1. Practice Regularly: Consistent practice is essential for improvement. Set aside time each week to practice your swing.

  2. Focus on Fundamentals: Continuously work on the basic components of your swing.

  3. Use a Golf Simulator: A golf simulator can provide valuable feedback on your swing, helping you make necessary adjustments.

Mastering the golf swing takes time, patience, and practice. By focusing on the basics, avoiding common mistakes, and incorporating effective drills, beginners can develop a consistent and powerful swing. Remember, improvement comes with regular practice and a commitment to learning. As you continue your golf journey, keep refining your skills and enjoy the process!

Our picks for The Masters are locked and loaded, and if you share our excitement, you’ve likely been counting down the days. The Masters is a high point in the golf season for us, especially after the chill of winter in the Northern Hemisphere. It’s a celebration where the enchantment of golf aligns with the bloom of spring, and we couldn’t be more ready. Yet, this is more than just a spectator’s joy; it’s an exploration into the essence of what sets Augusta National apart as golf’s ultimate challenge. So, let’s dive right in, shall we?

Augusta National: A Beauty and a BeastFirst off, Augusta National is not just another golf course; it’s a sanctuary of golfing legends. With its pristine fairways and devilishly designed greens, it’s where dreams are made (and sometimes crushed). The course is famous for its blooming azaleas, but don’t let its beauty fool you; it’s as challenging as they come. Especially when they keep tweaking it to add a bit more spice to the mix. Remember, it’s not just about power; it’s about smart plays and precision – especially with those irons.

Iron Play: The Key to AugustaSpeaking of irons, let’s talk about why they’re so crucial at the Masters. Augusta’s greens are notorious for being fast and furious. They’re designed in such a way that if you’re even a smidge off with your approach, you’ll find yourself in a world of tricky putts. This is where iron play comes into the spotlight. It’s all about accuracy and choosing the right spots to aim for, not just going flag-hunting on every shot. Get your iron shots dialled in, and you’re on your way to navigating Augusta like a pro.

Players to Watch: Our Masters Picks 2024 EditionNow, the moment you’ve been waiting for – our top picks for the Masters 2024. These are the players who not only have the skills but also the mental game to take on Augusta’s challenges:

Jon Rahm: After shaking up the golf world with his move to LIV, Rahm’s got more than just skill on his side; he’s got something to prove. And Augusta might just be his stage to remind everyone of his prowess.

Scottie Scheffler: As the reigning world No. 1, Scheffler’s game is hotter than ever. If he keeps his putter warm, there’s no stopping him from taking the green jacket home.

Xander Schauffele: With added length and a solid all-around game, Schauffele’s ready to step up. His calm demeanor and sharp game make him a serious contender.

Matt Fitzpatrick: Don’t let his quiet demeanor fool you; Fitzpatrick’s got the fire and the finesse to make a big splash. His approach game and putting are top-notch, making him a dark horse to watch.

Beyond the Green: Elevate Your GameInspired yet? Watching the Masters unfold is more than just a spectator sport; it’s a chance to learn and apply some of that mastery to your own game. And if iron play is where you’re looking to improve, we’ve got just the thing.

Our brand new “Pure Your Irons Plus” is not your average coaching plan. It’s tailored to help you nail those iron shots with precision and confidence, just like the pros at Augusta. Whether you’re looking to refine your approach shots or simply want to hit it closer more consistently, this is your ticket to leveling up your game.

So, Who Are Your Picks For The 2024 Edition of The Masters? As we gear up for the Masters 2024, let’s remember, despite us giving you our Masters picks, it’s not always just about who wins; it’s about the journey, the shots, and the moments that make golf the incredible sport it is. Whether you’re rooting for Rahm, cheering for Scheffler, or holding out hope for an underdog story, the Masters is a celebration of golf at its finest.

And for those of you itching to bring a piece of Augusta into your own game, don’t forget to check out “Pure Your Irons Plus.” It might just be the game-changer you need to make this golf season your best one yet.

LEARN MORE ABOUT PURE YOUR IRONSSo, grab your favorite golf hat, mark your calendars, and let’s enjoy the ride that is the Masters. Who knows? You might pick up a tip or two that’ll have you playing like a pro in no time. Here’s to good golf, great friends, and a Masters to remember!

Winter can be the best time for golfers to improve their game, offering a unique opportunity to shift focus from playing to fine-tune skills, focus on fitness, and mentally prepare for the season. At Me and My Golf, one of our core values is continuous, never-ending improvement and it’s still possible if the weather stops play! Here are five proven tips to help you improve your golf game during the colder months, ensuring you’re ready to hit the ground running when the courses thaw.

Embrace Indoor PracticeThe off-season is an excellent time to refine your technique and address any weaknesses in your game. Setting up a simple indoor practice area can help maintain your swing and putting stroke. Utilise tools like swing trainers, putting mats, and nets to keep your skills sharp. Focus on drills that can be performed in limited space, emphasising consistent swing tempo and accurate putting. Virtual reality golf simulators are also a fantastic way to simulate outdoor play and keep the game enjoyable and engaging throughout the winter.

Focus on Fitness and FlexibilityGolf may not seem like a physically demanding sport, but a strong, flexible body is crucial for a powerful and efficient swing. Winter provides the perfect opportunity to start a golf-specific fitness program focusing on core strength, flexibility, and balance. Exercises like squats, lunges, and planks can improve your overall strength, while yoga and pilates can enhance your flexibility and muscle control. A strong, well-conditioned body will not only improve your golf game but also help prevent injuries.

Master Your Mental GameGolf is as much a mental challenge as it is a physical one. Use the winter months to strengthen your mental game through visualisation, goal setting, and mindfulness practices. Visualising successful shots and rounds can build confidence and prepare you mentally for your return to the course. Setting specific, achievable goals for your game can also provide motivation and focus during the off-season. Mindfulness and meditation can improve concentration and help manage the frustrations and challenges of golf.

Equipment Maintenance and UpgradeThe winter break is an ideal time to take stock of your golf gear. Inspect your clubs for signs of wear, clean them thoroughly, and consider re-gripping to ensure optimal performance. It’s also a good opportunity to research new equipment and technologies that might benefit your game. Whether it’s a new set of irons, a high-tech rangefinder, or performance-enhancing golf balls, upgrading your equipment can provide a fresh perspective and renewed enthusiasm for the game.

Seek Professional Golf CoachingEven during the off-season, golf lessons can make a significant difference in your game. Online golf coaching platforms like us at Me and My Golf offer personalised instruction that can help you identify and correct flaws in your technique, develop a more effective practice routine, and achieve your golfing goals. With access to high-quality video lessons, swing analysis tools, and tailored fitness programs, you can make the most of the winter months and return to the course with confidence!

Winter Golf Improvement FAQsHow can I practise golf during the winter? You can practise golf indoors if you have space, using nets, putting mats, and swing trainers. Virtual golf simulators are also a great option for a more immersive experience, we recommend Golf5VR.

What are some good golf-specific exercises for the off-season?Focus on exercises that build core strength, flexibility, and balance, such as squats, lunges, planks, yoga, and pilates.

How can I improve my mental game in golf?Practice visualisation, set specific goals for your game, and engage in mindfulness and meditation to enhance focus and manage stress.

When should I consider upgrading my golf equipment?Consider upgrading when your equipment shows signs of wear, or if new technology can significantly improve your game.

How can online golf coaching help me during the winter? An online golf coach can provide personalised feedback on your technique, help you refine your practice routine, and offer tailored fitness advice.

Don’t let the cold weather put your golf ambitions on ice. Winter is the perfect time to focus on indoor practice, build your fitness, sharpen your mental game, maintain your equipment, and seek professional advice.

In this week’s YouTube video we had the pleasure of coaching Annealiese. She was struggling with her ball striking and was regularly topping the ball.

We worked on two things during her lesson that completely transformed her ball striking, and here we’ll talk you through the first thing we worked on.

It’s a basic when it comes to golf, but so many people regularly overlook the importance of having the correct stance when addressing the ball.

In Annealiese’s case, we could see straight away that some adjustments needed to be made to the width of her stance and how closely she was standing to the ball.

As you can see from the image above, Annealiese was addressing the ball with a very narrow stance, which was inhibiting her ability to transfer her weight and power during the swing. A narrow stance like this will also negatively affect balance during the swing, which can further contribute to a poor and inconsistent strike.

So, we got her to widen her stance and aim to have her weight distributed evenly between her lead and trail foot.

From the down the line view, we could also see that Annealiese was standing very close the ball, which explained why her poor shots were being struck from the heel or the hosel of the club. This is because the closer you stand to the ball the harder it is to strike the ball out of the middle of the club, because the body is in the way of the swing.

To fix this, Annealiese moved further away from the ball at address (like Piers is demonstrating above), and whilst this did feel very foreign to her in the beginning of the lesson, the effects it had on her ball striking were incredible.

We also worked on another element of Annealiese’s set-up, so be sure to watch the full video below to find out what it was and the changes we made.

If you want consistent ball-then-turf contact then you’ve come to the right place.

In our latest YouTube video, we explain how we got Christian going from horrible duffs to consistently straight iron shots using this very simple drill.

‘The One And Two’ drill

Christian’s issue with his ball striking laid in his transition. The weight transfer that we see in all great ball strikers was lacking, and so we showed him this drill and the effects on his ball striking were immediate.

The one and two drill works like this. Swing back to the top of your backswing, this is the motion that we call ‘one’. Then, shift your weight onto the lead leg, this is what we refer to as the ‘and’. Feel free to actually say this out-loud, and exaggerate the way you say it, like “aaaaaand”. Then, finish the downswing, and this is the part of the swing we can call ‘two’. See the images below for a visual demonstration.

This drill works because it moves the body closer to the impact line before you actually strike the golf ball. Therefore, moving the low-point of the swing forward, means that the club first makes contact with the ball and not the ground before it.

For the full explanation of the drill, be sure to check out the video below.

In this week’s YouTube video, we introduced Javier to a drill that turned his chronic slice into straight drives in minutes.

For the full breakdown, be sure to check out the full video. But for now, let’s give you a sneak peak of the drill we used with Javi, and how it helped him.

Impact Drill

From the first couple of swings, we could see Javi had an open club face at impact, meaning there were a lot of heel strikes. This open club face was creating the slice ball flight that he was trying to avoid. So, to hit the ball straighter we had to change the way the club face was meeting the ball at impact.

Using our very own impact bag (https://shop.meandmygolf.com/products/impact-bag), we got him to swing at half speed and focus on hitting the bag with the toe. We used the analogy of a finish line, if hitting the ball is the finish line then we want the toe of the club to cross the finish line before the heel.

This encouraged Javi to be more aware of where the club face was throughout the impact zone, and square the club face up quicker than he was previously doing.

The results of this simple drill were incredible, and Javi was finding more consistency. We also worked on part of his backswing to help with correcting his slice, so, be sure to check out the video below for all the details.

So many golfers just want to hit longer, straighter drives when they’re out on the golf course.

In this week’s YouTube video we worked with Adrian, on the simplest things to help him find more consistency with his driver.

We started with the grip and body alignment, then we moved on to a small move you can make with your right arm to easily add distance to your drives.

Body Alignment

When looking at Adrian’s swing path on the launch monitor we could see that his swing was moving out to the right of the target. In this case it wasn’t due to the swing path being out to in, it was a case of his body alignment not being parallel to the target line.

As you can see from the image below, his feet were actually aiming right of the target line, which explains why his swing path was 8 degrees to the right as players usually swing in line with the way their body is aiming.

This was a very simple fix, and it’s one of the reasons we recommend that you guys go back to basics regularly to check the fundamentals of your swing. We put an alignment stick down on the floor in the correct position, running parallel to the target line and got Adrian to set up with this stick in mind. Within a few shots his ball flight has straightened dramatically.

We would say, in terms of performance, this has to be the best golf lesson we have released on to YouTube so far.

At the start of the lesson, Win was struggling with duff shots and fading the ball a bit more than he would like.

The solution? We didn’t overcomplicate it and focused on 3 key areas. The result? Consistency like you wouldn’t believe.

Be sure to check out the full video linked below for the in-depth explanation of the swing changes. But until then, to whet your appetite, here is a quick breakdown of the David Leadbetter drill we got him to use.

Flick the Mud Drill

Hold the club from the opposite end, and grip the shaft as you usually would. This will make the club feel a lot lighter than usual when swinging.

The aim of this drill is to flick the grip end of the club up, while you’re swinging to the top of the backswing. This movement ensures that you break your wrist adequately and reduces that ‘swaying away from the target’ motion that can happen when you start the backswing.

In this week’s blog we’re at the half way point of covering our brand new Pure Your Irons Blueprint. Over the last couple of weeks we’ve covered steps 1 and 2, so today is all about step 3- the back swing pivot motion.

This is arguably one of the most important topics in the blueprint, because if you want to strike your irons pure then you’ll need a centred pivot.

Ensuring you have the correct kind of pivot will help you swing more on plane and help you get the low point past the golf ball with your irons. So to begin, we’re going to cover how to analyse your own swing and pivot motion.

Filming your swing from front on

From the front on position you want to draw a line vertically from your trail ankle up to your trail hip, we’ll call this the backswing line. You also need to put a circle around your head when you are in your address position. You can do all of this within the Me and My Golf app, so be sure to download it HERE if you haven’t already.

In the backswing, look at where the leg goes. Keeping it on the backswing line is fine, and it’s also alright if your leg is slightly inside of the line. Your head should be free to move around within the circle slightly as you swing, but it should remain in the circle throughout the swing and not go outside the lines.

If your leg or head move outside of these lines then that is considered a ‘sway’ motion and not a pivot, and this sway motion is going to negatively impact your ability to get the low point after the ball.

Filming your swing from down the line

When swinging back you’ll see how much your hips are turning, if you get a bit of a gap between your legs that’s fine. Make sure you pay attention to where your belt buckle is pointing and where your back is. You should aim to feel as though you are turning your back towards the target.

A lot of times when we cover this topic with our students and they begin to notice that they sway, they over-compensate by swinging with no turn at all. But if you do sway, then we want to replace that with a good pivot turn. The antidote to sway is good rotation- try to remember that every time you’re working on this aspect of your swing.

Another thing that we recommend all players to do, is test their hips mobility if they find they have a tendency to sway in their back swing. We cover all the details on how to test this in step 3 of the blueprint.

If you do find that you lack some hip mobility, then here are a couple of things you can do to make the rotation feel a bit easier. You can flair your trail foot out away from target and this helps to increase your ability to turn. Or similarly you could move your trail foot back slightly, effectively closing your stance a little bit, and this will aid more rotation.

When it comes to practicing this new pivot motion, we’ve got some great drills to help you solidify that new feeling in your swing. So, if you want to check them out for FREE, then simply out the form below.

When you sign up you’ll have free access to the membership and all of our coaching plans for 7 days, giving you plenty of time to make great progress through our Pure Your Irons blueprint!

A couple weeks ago we released something exciting, our Pure Your Irons Blueprint. In last week’s blog we covered how to build the correct grip, so this week we’re working on posture and balance in the golf swing.

Too often we see players working on lots of dynamic elements of the backswing when they’re struggling to strike their irons pure, but the correct posture and balance are regularly over-looked. They’re integral parts of the swing, and a bad posture and balance can cause a poor pivot and weight shift. So it’s super important to get these elements spot on, so let’s breakdown exactly what you guys should be aiming for.

The best way to check your posture and balance is to film from both down the line, and face-on. This way you can draw the line we’re about to speak about to check you’re in the correct position.

Posture

Here are four key points to look for when assessing your stance:

  • Good hip hinge
  • Slight leg flex
  • Soft arms
  • Draw the line to visualise

When we say draw the line, here is what we mean-

Filming from down the line, you want to draw a vertical line down to the floor from your tricep. The line should pass just in front of your knees and then go into the toes, this shows you are standing the correct distance away from the golf ball.

Too much hip flex and the line won’t pass through the knees, but too much knee flex and the line will cut through the knees excessively.

This is a great drill to do as you can do it without any help from anyone else, and can clearly see if you’re in the right position. Remember to film and draw the line regularly to always check you’re getting yourself into the best posture possible to hit the ball.

Balance

To ensure you have the correct weight distribution when addressing the ball, place an alignment stick under the arches of your feet. Then, take your set-up and notice where you weight is in relation to the stick, is the majority of your weight in front of the stick or behind?

Ideally we’re looking for an even weight distribution across the feet, as we tend to find when people set up with most of their weight in the heels or the toes this can contribute to heel and toe strikes with the club.

A good even balance across the feet allows us to use the ground to create a good pivot, and therefore more power and this is really where the improved ball striking begins.

From face-on, you also need to check that the upper body is stacked nicely over the lower body. So when reviewing your swing on video, be sure to draw a box from your heels over your head. The idea here being that your body should stay centred within this box.

In terms of the ball position, you should aim for just ahead of centre. But this can come down to personal preference, so play around with ball position a bit to find how you like it and where you hit it best from.

If you’ve loved all the information in this blog then you definitely need to check out Step 2 of our “Pure Your Irons” Blueprint. The best bit? It’s free to watch.

We also cover backswing pivot motion, arm sync and downswing shift.

Last week we released something exciting, our Pure Your Irons Blueprint. So, in this week’s blog we thought we’d go through the first weeks coaching video for you.

When working on any aspect of the swing it’s important to start with great fundamentals, and that’s why we always like to work from the grip up.

This grip is such an integral part of the swing, it plays a key role in how the hands work, how we create lag and club face direction. So, consider this a technique refresher!

Let’s start with what not to do.

A weak grip really can kill any chance you have of good ball striking, and when we say weak grip, we mean like you see below. The club sits more in the palm than the fingers and you can’t see any knuckles or glove logo on the lead hand.

When you grip the club like this with your lead hand, the trail hand tends to creep over the top of the grip, and this combination really inhibits your ability to make a good swing. It limits your wrist movement, opens the club face and your hands and arms have a much harder time of working with your body. This grip is also going to negatively affect your ball striking, as it’ll increase your chances of hitting the ground before the ball.

A strong grip is the opposite of a weak grip, so just imagine the reverse of what’s written above. Admittedly it isn’t quite as destructive as a weak grip, but you’re definitely going to increase your chances of hitting a hook as the club face will be a lot more closed at impact.

Now we’ve told you what not to do, let’s go through the neutral grip.

You want the club to rest along the base of your fingers of your lead hand, then wrap your hand around the club from there. You should be able to see at least 2 knuckles on your lead hand when you look down at your club, this is a great way to check your hand is in the correct place. The image below is what you’re aiming for.

If you’re still not sure you’ve got your lead hand in the correct position then you should definitely consider purchasing one of our True Grip Gloves. It has cleverly coloured panels that help ensure you get your hand in the right place, and even better, it’s competition compliant. So you can play with it every round! If you want to get one for yourself then you can CLICK HERE, and it’ll take you to the Me and My Golf Shop.

Ensuring you get your grip into this neutral position is really going to help you get a better range of motion. You’ll be able to sync the arms and the body, and it really helps with club face control.

One extra point we would like to make is during your practice, make sure you reset your grip on every shot. Checking your hands and their position on the grip should be a step in your pre-shot routine for sure.

And if you think this blog has been useful then you definitely need to check out the full video. You can find it in the “Pure Your Irons” coaching plan, it’s the first main video in the series, so it’s easy to find. Be sure to click the button below to get access to the first week completely FREE.

Our hands are the only thing connected to the golf club so they obviously play a huge part in the swing. Most people however, overlook what they are doing, focusing on the bigger, more obvious to the eye movements.

These bigger movements are often influenced by what the hands are doing so if we can get these good, it’s so much easier to get the rest working.

David Woods is a PGA Professional and Director of Golf at The Vintage Club in Palm Desert California. David has coached numerous Touring professionals and is very passionate about improving amateur golfers. He’s also the co-creator of the successful “Plane Mate” training aid and his latest invention is the ProSendr which is all about creating great wrist angles to help you deliver the club more consistently at impact.

Today he shares what he has learned over the years about how golfers can best use their hands to create a more consistent repeatable ball flight and contact.

In this week’s YouTube video we had the pleasure of catching up with 5 time PGA Tour winner Rickie Fowler.

We challenged him to an up and down short game competition, and took the opportunity to find out what he’s thinking when he stands over a challenging chip shot.

So today we’re passing on his tips and tricks when it comes to chipping.

  1. Choose your landing zone, and play to that. Rickie rightly points out that too often golfers become obsessed with looking at the chip shot as a whole, and because of this they can easily get sucked into thinking they have to chip the ball all the way to the hole.

Choose your landing zone, and use the club that’ll play the best shot to get you there. After that, let the green do the work for you.

  1. Move your practice around the green. In our time with Rickie he told us that he prefers to practice his short game while moving around the green and playing shots from different locations.

He said the 50+ shots from the same spot on the green can be helpful when you need to practice something mechanically in your swing.

But beyond this, he prefers to move about and switch it up between chip shots and then putting those balls to try and get them in.

This makes so much sense, because it helps to simulate course conditions while you’re practicing so we’d definitely recommend this to all of you guys if you aren’t doing this already!

By the way if you’re loving these short game tips so far then be sure to *CLICK HERE and check out the Me and My Golf Academy.*

We’ve got coaching plans specifically created for every aspect of the short game that we’re sure you guys will love!

  1. Play the percentages. Rickie likes to evaluate each chip and play the one that’ll have the least negative impact if he doesn’t quite pull it off.

For example, in one shot we watched, he decided to fly the ball into the slope and he did this because he knew that if it came up a little short then it would still have a chance of rolling closer.

Instead of flying the ball all the way to the hole which had more potential to go wrong if he didn’t hit it exactly how he wanted it.

If you want to know how Rickie did in the challenge that we set him, then be sure to check out the video below.

Want some feedback from us on your own game? Just answer a few questions by taking our quiz and we’ll tell you what to work on within MINUTES.

In this week’s YouTube video we went head to head in a 3 hole matchplay competition with the women’s world number 1 amateur, Rose Zhang. As a hugely accomplished player, Rose currently holds the record for women’s lowest score on Thursday at the Masters, after shooting 66. So it’s fair to say we were up against it!

To say we were impressed with her game was an understatement, so despite the competition we managed to ask her for a few words of wisdom that we could pass on to you guys. So here are Rose’s top 3 tips when it comes to playing golf.

  1. When choosing which club to hit, don’t forget to take into consideration how warmed up you are. If you’re pretty early into the round, or didn’t get a chance to warm up fully before playing then consider taking more club and swing easier.

  2. Whenever possible, practice on the course instead of the range. And if you have to practice on the range, try and finish every practice session with some playing on the course. It’s continuously putting yourself in the competition environment that teaches you how to consider factors like slope and wind speed/direction, and these factors have a huge impact on your round if you don’t know how to account for them.

  3. Prepare your body! Put the work in at the gym, train your mobility, and this will help you to hit it further while swinging effortlessly. Don’t underestimate the impact this can have on your game. You swing so much better when you trust you have prepared your body correctly.

If you haven’t watched the video yet, check it out below to see who came out on top after the 3 holes.

There’s plenty more of this kind of content over on our Me and My Golf app, if you haven’t downloaded it already then be sure to CLICK HERE and join team MAMG.

In this week’s live lesson we helped Tony with the rotation in his back swing. It was a much more interesting problem than you might originally think, as we had to help him navigate some mental hurdles in order to make the physical changes needed in his swing.

We started out with observing some of Tony’s shots to see what was going on, and quickly noticed that he was swinging very over the plane and to the left of target. This coupled with his open club face at impact was causing the fades and slices that he was trying to get rid of.

We could also see that Tony had a lot of reverse spine angle at the top of his backswing, and that this was a compensatory action due to his lack of rotation. So we decided to do some tests to check the level of rotation that Tony could achieve. It was through this process that we realised Tony’s lack of rotation was in part due to a mental reason, more so than a physical one.

Tony thought that he needed to reduce his movement in the swing in order to swing correctly. We had a great conversation about movement within the golf swing, and how a lot of times it isn’t about stopping movement in general, it’s about stopping the wrong kinds of movement.

It’s times like this where we like to emphasise how important it is to make sure you understand your swing, and why you do everything that you do. Because you never know, you could be in a position like Tony where you realise you were doing something incorrectly. Not because you can’t do it, but because your understanding of what you want to achieve isn’t 100%.

So how did we fix Tony’s reverse spine angle and lack of rotation? We got him to practice getting himself into the top of the backswing position, whilst allowing his lead knee to move in slightly and his head to move as his lead shoulder moves to under his chin. To help with this we got him to flare his trail foot out slightly to allow for more rotation into that trail-side hip.

The key to this lesson was Tony’s understanding of rotation in the golf swing. And as you can see by the photo below, it made the world of difference.

We also went through a couple easy changes he could make to improve his ball striking, the best thing about these tips are they can apply to almost anyone’s game. So be sure to check out the video below to see those.

Today we’re going back to basics and we’re teaching you guys how to build a consistent golf grip. The fundamentals are so important when it comes to building the correct foundation for your swing. But once you’re an experienced player it’s easy to forget the little things. So we’re going to show you how to build a consistent grip, and also some killer mistakes that we suggest you avoid at all costs.

For the purpose of this blog, all of the information is going to be provided for a right-handed golfer, so bare that in mind if you’re a lefty! You’ll also see a cheeky cameo from one of our incredible new training products the True Grip Golf Glove, we’ll give you all the details for that below.

Left Hand

So for the left hand, you want to place the club across the base of your fingers, then close the hand around the club, and make sure you can still see your first two knuckles. The V that’s created between your thumb and first finger (or the blue V on the True Grip Golf Glove) should point up to the right of your chin and your thumb should rest slightly down the right side of the grip.

When you hold the golf club with just this hand, you should be able to hold it with just one finger. As the club is being supported under the fleshy part of the hand, this is a key component, as a lot of people will hold the club in their palm instead and this promotes a weak grip which we do not want.

The reason you want to avoid a weak grip is because it restricts your ability to set the wrists in the backswing, which can lead to an open club face at impact and also a lack of swing speed. How can you tell if you’ve got a weak left hand when you grip? Check to make sure you can see the two knuckles on your left hand. If you can’t see two, then that’s a weak grip.

Right Hand

For the right hand, you want your palm to face towards the target, with the grip across the bottom part of your first finger and the base of the little finger. Then close that hand and slide it up to cover your left thumb.

Then you can gently interlock or overlap the first finger and little finger. Make sure not to have a deep interlock here, as this can place the right hand in a ‘strong’ position where the club sits across the palm again and the hand sits on the underneath of the grip instead of at the side of it. This should be avoided because a strong right hand can cause the club face to shut too quickly during the swing, leading to an increased likeliness of hitting a low hook.

Similarly you also need to ensure that the right hand doesn’t end up too weak. You can check this, because if the grip was weak then the V we spoke about earlier would instead be pointing towards the left shoulder. You want to avoid this because it encourages the shoulders and the club face to open causing the ball to go high and right of the intended target.

When it comes to the grip you need to remember that how you position your hands affects the club face, and the club face accounts for 75% of the direction of the ball. With the other 25% being accounted for by the swing path.

Now, one of the questions we are regularly asked is “how tight should I grip the club?’ So in this video we go into full detail of exactly how much pressure we recommend you use when at address and swinging. Be sure to check out the video below to see the full explanation.

So if you’ve loved this explanation, and our demonstration with the brand new True Grip Golf Glove then be sure to grab yourself one and get practicing the points we’ve gone over in this blog. It’s an absolute game-changer when it comes to your grip and you’ll be pleased to know you can even use it in any competition you play in! We’ve had it certified by the R&A, so it’s completely competition compliant. So you’ve got absolutely no excuses for your grip ruining your game.

They’ve been selling like hot cakes, so be sure you grab your one quick before they sell out completely! But have no fear, we’ve got loads more stock coming soon so if your size is currently sold out then be sure to keep your eyes peeled for the restock.

In this week’s live lesson we worked with Trevor on getting rid of his hook. Before his lesson he thought some big swing changes would be needed to hit the ball straighter, but we managed to do it by tweaking just three things. Let’s go through them.

First, let’s go through how different kinds of ball flights are created. Any ball flight you can think of is the result of the swing path and club face alignment at impact. So, for a hook like Trevor was hitting, his club face was pointing left of the target, but his swing path was in to out, meaning he was swinging out to the right of his target.

Looking at his FlightScope data, his swing path was drastically right of the target and the club face was aiming considerably left at impact. To get him to hit it straighter, we needed to work on getting both of those figures closer to 0. In this case 0 means a neutral swing path through the impact zone and a square club face at impact.

Club Face Alignment

In order to get Trevor’s club face more square at impact we actually worked on how it looked when he initially addressed the ball. He was setting up to the ball with his club head closed a little as he was over-compensating for a slice that he used to have. Once we explained the effect the club face can have on the curvature of his shot he realised this needed to be changed without us even telling him.

Trevor was also a fan of hovering the ball at address when he’s hitting his driver. But in order to get the club head sitting correctly, we got him to rest it on the grass at address and look at how the club sat on the turf naturally. This is because the club is designed to sit square.

Once he got the club in the correct position on the floor he could then grip the club, hover and proceed to hit his shot as normal. It may seem like such a simple fix, but things like club head alignment and grip should never be over-looked when it comes to trying to straighten a ball flight.

Swing Path

To correct Trevor’s swing path was even easier! From his set up we could see his feet were aiming too far right of the target, his shoulders were more neutral but again they were aiming to the right. All we did to correct this was put some alignment sticks down that pointed to the target and got Trevor to setup to the ball. This instantly brought his swing path closer to 0, and it was something as simple as his initial aim that was causing the swing path out to the right.

These two really simple changes worked wonders in getting Trevor’s ball flight straighter and correcting the hook shot that he was really struggling with. If you’ve loved these first two coaching points then be sure to check out the full video below to see the third one.

In this week’s YouTube video, we had the absolute pleasure of catching up with two time major winner Collin Morikawa. Last time he gave us some incredible tips for iron play, so this time we thought we would pick his brain when it comes to his best driver tips.

Today we’re going to go through how he changes his swing to play different shot shapes, and how he practices at the range to get it to transfer to the course.

Tempo

Collin’s a huge fan of a slower backswing, regardless of what club you’re hitting but especially if it’s with the big stick. When we spoke to him, he rightly pointed out that a lot of amateur players tend to speed up the first portion of their backswing when they’re really trying to send their drives.

But this usually makes them very jerky, and throws off the whole swing. He recommends keeping the swing slow until you’re half way to the top of your backswing, and focussing on that move away motion, as this allows you to get in a better position for the rest of the swing.

Shot Shaping

Especially with his driver, Collin prefers to play a left to right shot shape, commonly known as a fade. He likes to use as much of the fairway as possible to give him the best odds of keeping it on the short stuff. He rightly pointed out that a lot of golfers will aim to hit the ball straight, but the professionals know that isn’t the be all and end all. The real aim of the tee shot for all golfers should be to maximise your potential to hit a fairway.

So instead of making lots of swing changes to try and achieve that illusive straight ball flight, you should focus on honing your natural shot shape and play to that. He gave us a great quote while we were with him, that we think every single one of you should remember- “It’s not about hitting it straight it’s about using your misses.” Someone get that printed on a t-shirt!

Now we know what you’re thinking, how does Collin create that fade ball flight that he’s so fond of? When it comes to shaping his shots he focuses on two things. Regardless of the shape he always sets up with his club face to target, and he aligns his body to the start line of the ball flight. Nothing more to it, he keeps it super simple and swings along the start line of the shot he is visualising.

Practice

One of the biggest topics with spoke about in our time with Collin was how he practices hitting his driver at the range, but in a way that is helpful and he can replicate out on the course. He told us he likes to visualise a fairway, and make them all different widths using markers already on the range. He then adds in imaginary obstacles, like bunkers, that he needs to try and avoid. He then hits shots with the aim to land on the fairway but not in any of the obstacles.

This helps him to create accountability for himself and his practice. He rightly says that a lot of amateur players go to the range in the hope of bombing the driver down the middle over and over. But that’s not realistic when it comes to playing on the course, so he tries to emulate those conditions at all times to keep his practice relevant to his playing.

If you’ve loved all of Collin’s tips so far, then be sure to check out the rest of the video below. We even went head to head with him in a shot shaping competition at the end, so check it out to see who came out on top.

We’ll admit, this week’s live lesson was very different than the ones we usually do. It took a very ‘technical’ coaching path, but this week’s student Ty has been playing a while and was more than up for the challenge.

Ty had a bad case of the shanks, so the focus was curing those, and we did so by making three changes. One to his set up, and two to his swing. The third change was focused around his club head position in the backswing, and is an absolute game changer when it comes to avoid those hosel rockets. So let’s go through them in more detail, and be sure to take notes in case you ever get hit with a case of the shanks too.

Set-up

As you can see from the photo below, Ty’s grip was a bit on the strong side and was what we call ‘palmy’. Meaning that the club was sitting in the palm of his hand and not across the fingers. This was giving him a tendency to shut the face too much at impact, and our first aim was to take the left side of the course out of play.

The first change we made was to adjust his right hand, making sure that the palm of his hand was facing the target as he gripped the club. We also got him to grip in more in the fingers, which we did warn him would feel strange at first, but was well worth the results.

In order to help Ty adjust quickly to this big change in his set up, we got him to hit balls off of a tee peg instead of the grass. We didn’t care about his interaction with the turf, so we took that factor out of play so he could focus on his grip and not the strike.

Swing

Right at the beginning of the lesson, thanks to the FlightScope data, we could see that Ty’s swing was very in to out. And this emphasised swinging out to the right was also contributing to his shanks, as it increased the likeliness of him hitting it out of the hosel.

To work on this was a very simple fix. We used a head cover, placed it next to the ball and used it as awareness for Ty. The idea behind this was that if he hit the ball with an in to out swing path, he would contact the ball with the hosel of the club, but he would also hit the head cover.

So the aim was to miss the head cover every time he hit the ball, in order to miss the head cover, Ty had to change his swing path to be more straight, instead of out to the right.

It took a few attempts, but the beauty of this drill is that it was really easy for Ty to set up himself, and to see when he completed it successfully and when he didn’t. It’s one we would recommend you all try for yourselves too, to give you some more awareness of your club’s position at impact.

Now, this is where the lesson took a bit of a more technical turn, there was one more swing change we made to Ty’s swing to really help him stop those shanks. So to save you reading a 1000 word essay, it’s best you guys check out the video below for the full explanation.

In this week’s YouTube video we worked with ladies long drive competitor, Sofia Arthur. However she asked us to help her with her chipping, so this was the focus of this week’s video.

Ahead of making any changes we needed to look at her technique and set up at the beginning of the lesson. As you can see from the image below, Sofia had the ball quite far back in her stance. Having lots of shaft lean contributed to her having a very steep angle of attack when she hit her chips.

We could also see after she hit a few shots, that her backswing was significantly shorter than her follow through swing, and from asking some exploratory questions we found out that this was likely because she was focussing on the idea of getting through the shot.

Because of this set up and follow though, Sofia’s ball flight was considerably lower than we would want for regular chips, making it harder for the ball to stop. So, here are the changes that we suggested she make to improve her technique:

Ball Position: We moved Sofia’s ball position further forward so it was more central between both feet.

Backswing: We suggested that she thought of her chipping swing like a pendulum, however far back she swung is how far through she needed to swing.

Swing thought: Instead of focussing on the length of swing, we got Sofia to focus on feeling like she was brushing the grass with her club. Be sure to check out the full video below to hear my “Airplane analogy” that we also used!

These three small changes helped to contribute to a higher ball flight, allowing her to stop the ball more quickly in situations like this.

Now, this won’t work for every kind of lie, up until now all of these tips have worked on the premise of a good starting lie. So what do you do if you find your ball sat down in the rough? In this case we would recommend something very similar to Sofia’s initial technique.

This is because rough is an unpredictable surface, so you want the club to spend as little time interacting with the grass as possible. So a steep angle of attack where you hit ball first, then grass is preferred.

We also offer another couple of ways we would recommend to chip out of the rough (watch the video below).

This week we’re talking through a recent lesson we had with popular golf personality, Alissa Kacar. She wanted to stop slicing her driver, and to increase her distance. So let’s breakdown the two really simple changes we made to make it happen.

As you can see from the before photo, we quickly realised that Alissa starts the downswing with her lower body a bit too quickly, which was preventing her from completing her backswing. Because of this, the lower body was getting in the way of her downswing and causing a steep, over the top swing.

From looking at her FlightScope data, we could also see that her club face was open at impact, and this, coupled with her over the top, out to in swing were creating her slicing ball flight.

So the first thing we got her to work on was making sure her shoulders were at 90 degrees when she got to the top of her backswing. This extra rotation enables her to make more space for the downswing, in which she can drop her hands down lower and get her swing more on plane.

When trying this shoulder rotation out for yourself it’s important to remember that it’s okay for the legs to move and the trail leg to straighten a little to allow for a full shoulder turn. And when working on this we really recommend focusing on the ‘motion’ and not getting into specific positions on the downswing.

When it came to Alissa’s distance, we kind of worked on this inadvertently. By improving her swing path and club face at impact, we indirectly increased her ball speed because her ball striking improved.

As a little booster though, we recommended that Alissa turn into her trail leg during the backswing, loading the weight onto her trailside, so that her weight transfer through the downswing and impact could help to increase her clubhead speed and therefore her ball speed too.

As you can see above, the changes worked an absolute treat. But don’t just take our word for it, be sure to check it out for yourself by watching the video below.

Today we’re not beating around the bush, we’re going to explain to you one of our favourite drills to use when you’re too steep on the downswing and not quite striking your irons how you’d like to.

You’re welcome in advance.

The Baseball Drill

Set up as you would to the ball at address, and lift the club straight up in front of you, until the club and your arms are at 90 degrees to the rest of your body. See image below.

From here, remaining in the upright position, swing back as if you were completing your backswing. Then swing through all the way to the end of your follow through. This is how the swing gets its name, because this type of swinging motion is very similar to that of a baseball swing.

Once you are comfortable repeating this type of swing, and you have a feel for it. Then place a ball on a tee peg, and aim to emulate the shallowness of this baseball swing, while you cleanly pick the ball off of the tee peg. Making sure to avoid contact with the ground.

What is this drill good for?

Typically we would recommend this for people who have a very steep angle of attack, and are usually over the plane. Swinging around the body helps to create a better feel for shallowing the golf club, and the baseball analogy is an easy one that we find most people know how to do when we explain it.

If you find that you are losing distance, have an overly high ball flight or take excessive divots when you hit your irons then we would strongly recommend you try this drill out in your next practice session.

And if you’re looking for more content just like this then be sure to check out the rest of the YouTube video below, for another couple of our GAME CHANGING iron play tips.

But if you want a long term fix when it comes to your irons then we suggest you hit the link below and check out our fully comprehensive iron focused coaching plan.

It’s called “Ultimate Irons” and we’re sure you’re going to love it. Plus, you’ll be happy to hear access to it is included in our 7 day free trial.

They’re questions we get asked all the time- “Is there a difference between how you’re supposed to swing a driver and an iron? How are they different? And how can I make sure I’m swinging correctly?”

The short answer is yes, they are different. So today we’re going through the set-up, the backswing and the downswing for both shots. So you can see all the differences, and implement some of our top tips into your own off season practice.

A key factor you need to understand when comparing these two clubs is ‘low point’. When we refer to low point we are referring to the lowest point on the swing arc through the hitting zone.

So now we’ve got that definition out of the way, lets clarify the differences between the two clubs-

Driver

The driver is used to create power and distance. You can tee it up as high as you want, so the ground does not interfere with the shot. To hit the ball as far as possible it’s recommended you hit up on the ball. Meaning there is upward angle of attack at impact, and the low point of the swing is before the ball.

Iron

The irons are used for precision and control. Nearly every iron shot is played off the ground, and because of this it is more affected by ground conditions (for example if the ball is sitting down, or on a slope). Because of these factors it is suggested you hit down on the shot using an downward angle of attack which also means the low point will be past the golf ball.

Now we’ve established the clubs are different, are used for different things and need different swings, let’s go through the three main parts of the swing and give you some tips.

Set-up

For the driver, the ball needs to be teed up high on a tee peg. You should address the ball with a wider stance, with the ball position in line with the heel of the lead foot. Weight distribution should be 55/45, favouring the trail side, and there should be a fair amount of tilt in the upper body, which can be seen in the image below.

Alternatively, for an iron shot, the ball should be addressed with a narrower stance. Ball position must be in the middle of the stance, maybe ever so slightly towards the lead foot, and the weight should be distributed 55/45 however this time favouring the lead side. As you can see from the image above, the torso tilt for an iron shot should be minimal when compared to that for the driver.

Backswing

In a driver backswing we expect to see to see a lot of shoulder movement away from the target. This helps to create more room in the downswing, and facilitates bringing the club back to the ball on a shallower, upward angle of attack.

As you can see the weight has been loaded onto the trail leg, ready for the weight and power to be transferred to the lead side during the downswing. This weight transfer helps to create the distance and power.

A drill that we love to recommend, to ensure you’re getting into the correct position in the backswing is to bounce your weight between your feet during the backswing. This transferring of weight really helps you to become aware of where your weight is during the swing, and helps you to get a feel for the correct movement.

However, in the iron backswing, the body pivot remains centered. The lead shoulder turns and moves away from the target, but not as dramatically as the driver backswing. As you can see from the image above.

A drill we recommend for this is called “The Thong Drill” (stick with us!). Place an alignment stick behind you at address, with the stick touching between your butt cheeks. You want to practice feeling as though you are moving the alignment stick towards the target with your right butt cheek as you move up to the top of the backswing. This will help you to create the correct movement and weight transfer. We can’t guarantee you won’t get a couple of funny looks at the range though!

Downswing

In the downswing with the driver, we are looking for the torso to hold back. There won’t be as much of a weight transfer to the lead leg, but the focus should be on pushing up from the floor with the legs.

We recommend a drill called “Thunder Stamp” to help with this. Lift your lead heel up at the top of your backswing, and slam the heel onto the floor to initiate the downswing with the lower body. Like we have previously mentioned, this helps you to feel the sensation of pushing off the ground, getting the body to move up and back.

In the iron downswing you should shift your weight onto the lead leg in order to create lots of forward shaft lean. This steeper angle of attack with help to make sure you are hitting down on the ball at impact.

A drill we suggest for this is called “Two Tees”. Place the ball on an appropriately high tee peg, as if you were playing a par 3. Now place another tee peg around a grips length in front of the ball. The aim here is to hit the tee peg that’s in front of the ball as you hit the ball from the original tee peg. This will further help to promote that downswing swing.

We also have more great drills for both the driver and irons, but to check them out make sure you watch the full YouTube video that we’ve linked below.

Over 90% of putts are affected by the slope on the putting green, so why do we only practice straight putts?

We’re huge advocates for practicing golf in realistic settings, and putting is no exception. So if most putts are rarely ever straight, then why should you only be able to practice the straight ones at home? This is the reason we created the mat.

Introducing the ‘Breaking Balls Putting Mat’! Today we’re going through everything you could possibly need to know about this groundbreaking training aid.

How it’s going to help you

The breaking balls putting mat comes in 2 sizes, 7.5ft and 11ft. Unlike your other standard putting mat, this one comes with 3 different coloured breaking balls. The ball colour corresponds with the 3 different levels of break, blue being the biggest break.

There are coloured lines on the set-up area, which you can use to line up your putt, taking into account for the correct amount of break. Once all lined up you can practice on getting the correct speed to hole the putts.

But how does it work?! Each ball has a screw located in the side of the ball, and each screw is weighted differently to simulate different types of break. Blue simulates the biggest break, and green the smallest.

Depending on how you set up the ball at address, you can practice hitting putts that break from right to left and vice versa. So there are plenty of real, on course scenarios that you can practice for. Not only that, but we’ve also created a completely FREE coaching course, that comes as standard when you purchase the Breaking Balls Putting Mat!

The coaching series covers everything, from how to set up and use the mat correctly, to how to create the perfect putting routine. We’ve even included a great coaching game called ‘The Every Putt Challenge’ that we think you’re going to love.

Your questions answered

How do I access the Me and My Golf training videos?

Inside the box is a leaflet stating how to watch the training videos. Simple scan the QR code on the leaflet and should be taken to the Me and My Golf website. Either register for free or login and you’ll have full access to the videos.

What speed on the stimp metre is the putting mat?

The mat rolls at a medium to fast pace, depending on the floors surface. We find putting on hard floors roll faster than say a softer surface like carpet. We feel the mat is around 11 on the stimp meter just below the PGA TOUR average.

How do I know which way the ball will break?

All breaking balls have a line down the middle with a weight on the side of the ball. When positioning the ball on the mat the line should be aimed at your start line with eight the weight on the left or right. If the weight is on the left the ball will break toward the left (right to left putt).

We know this putting mat is going to make a hugely positive impact on your game, so be sure to click the link below and check them out on our official training aid website. No matter which country you’re in, you’ll be able to get your hands on one thanks to our worldwide shipping.

Statistically, these are the hardest holes (when you compare them to par 4’s & par 5’s). A little surprising huh?

The mistakes that we see most amateurs make centre around these 3 areas…

  • Club selection – In short, not taking enough club and being too worried about their ego’s. Don’t worry, we’ve all done it

  • Flag hunting – You would not believe the difference in your scores if you had more of a focus on the centre of the greens. Constantly going for the flags leaves little margin for error

  • Not understanding the conditions – Even some of the most experienced golfers are only just understanding that hitting to a green that’s ‘below you’ means you don’t need to take as much club

There is actually two more in addition to those but you’ll have to watch on to find out what they are.

All make sense yeah?
