What discussions do we sweep under the carpet? What do we see but never want to talk about? Silence Interrupt is a podcast that tackles issues we do not talk about often. In the first season of Silence Interrupted, Peter Nawa investigates mental health in Zambia.
This is a brief review of my thoughts on what has happened since the final episode of season 1 and what to expect.
Loss of memory is almost synonymous with older people, therefore when it does occur very few people seek treatment for their loved ones. The loss of memory can often go undiagnosed, yet it could be a case of dementia. In this episode, I look at mental health in older people specifically dementia.

I was too young to understand what was happening. All I knew was that my uncle had gone mad. No one took the time to explain what was going on, perhaps because they did not understand it too. In this episode, I talk to my mother and aunt about my uncle’s schizophrenia and try to get some of my questions answered.

In 2010, Antonio Mwanamuke aka Yellow Dove was having a great year. He was pursuing his Mass Communication degree at the University of Zambia and had just released his gospel hip hop debut album Born to Win. The album contained the hit track, What Would Jesus Do If He Came to Zambia? Then something unexpected happened that threatened to derail the success he had worked so hard to achieve. He suffered from a mental illness. In this episode, Antonio shares his story of what transpired during that period and where he is right now.

N.B: Please note that the first minute of this episode contains strong language and may not be suitable for sensitive listeners.
There are things that shape the way think, react and the people around us. Throughout our lives we are gathering information that will base the foundation of what we believe and perceive. In this vein, our views of mental illness are shaped by a number of factors- culture, religion, education and others. However, we need to recognise that whatever view we hold is how we are going to relate to individuals with mental illness. In this episode of Silence Interrupted, I find out what are the views of people towards individuals with mental illness and also where would those views have come from.
