Another year of VIFF is upon us and, instead of waiting until the festival is over to talk about what we missed, this year we wanted to start things off with a shortlist of films that have been grabbing people’s attention. The UFSA Symposium is back again! Every year UFSA puts on an academic symposium where students can present their research on film and TV. For today’s episode we sat down with this year’s presenters, June Rossaert, Dheeraj Waran, Jana Rankov, and Jason Roberts, to talk about their presentations, which range from topics like subjectivity, Americana, identity, and cult film status. Join host Eve O’Dea for a special Valentine’s Day episode as she hears from different people on films that first taught them about love and those that broke their hearts, and meditates on the different loves one can embody. This episode is set to Nicholas Britell’s latest score for Barry Jenkins’ If Beale Street Could Talk (2018). An adaptation of the James Baldwin novel by the same name, this gorgeously crafted film is a reflection on love, justice, and community, nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Supporting Actress, and Best Original Score at the 2019 Oscars.
2018 has been volatile for film. Some of us thought it was a great year, others less so. For this episode, we gathered a roundtable of UFSA members, some new and some familiar, to talk about their favourite films of the year, as well as some disappointments, and a few inevitable Oscar related targets.
