Everyone knows that clear communication is key in maintaining a positive classroom environment. The tricky part is the unintentional mixed messages that we often give our students. A “non-reaction” can easily be misunderstood to be an approval. Ayesis Clay is a distinguished arts educator and multidisciplinary theatre artist. With over 17 years in education, she has written and developed curriculum for Prince George’s County Public Schools (one of the top 25 largest school districts in the nation), the Maryland Department of Juvenile Services, and many local and regional theatre companies. She has held many school and district leadership positions including Theatre department chairperson for the largest magnet program in the district, chairperson for the Prince George’s County Schools Theatre Advisory Board, and served as Co-Founder and Co-Director of the PGCPS Honor's Theatre Ensemble (2014-2018).
Ayesis holds a Bachelor’s degree in Theatre, a Master’s degree in Curriculum and Instruction, and is a certified Arts Integration Specialist (University of Maryland, College Park). As a teaching artist, Ayesis has worked with many organizations including Young Playwrights Theatre (DC), Adventure Theatre (MD), Imagination Stage (MD), Capital Charter Public Schools (DC), and Maryland Performing Arts Academy (MD).

Her play, Standing on the Edge, has toured locations across the U.S., and her one-woman show, Sculpting Clay or How I Became Mother of Unicorns, premiered at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts before playing in New York, Arizona, and the Atlas Performing Arts Center in Washington, DC.
Combining her extensive background in theatre and education, Ayesis founded Sculpted Clay Productions, where she uses innovative theatre-infused residencies and professional development workshops to help schools create trauma-sensitive, social-emotional focused learning environments for teachers and students. She continues to strive for an increased spotlight on teacher and student mental wellness by inspiring deeper conversations around humanity in education, including complex and important topics like secondary trauma and burnout.

Everyone knows how important the teacher-student relationship is. The question is, can a teacher really make sure that every student has a good relationship and feels good about it too? Once you implement the first two steps of the framework, the third step is easy!

Students with “misbehavior problems” are too common and are often the start of more serious struggles. Many interventions fail to help these kids overcome their difficulties. The ClasStars framework takes a different approach that includes the following points. 1. Student’s misbehavior is often their call for help. 2. Teachers often don’t even take note of misbehavior until it reaches a level of disruption to the class. 3. Recording or noting misbehavior is annoying and cumbersome. By taking note of less intrusive misbehaviors, teachers can get a better picture about behavior trends, making it easier to manage and measure. Of course, the ClasStars app makes it super simple!

- A teacher would never destroy a child’s work. Everyone understands how discouraging that is. But research shows that ignoring one’s effort is almost as discouraging! 2. The human brain functions in a way that when it is focused on one thing, it is to the exclusion of everything else. When a teacher is focused on a student, or a part of the lesson, it is to the exclusion of everyone else. A teacher must be mindful to notice and acknowledge every single student. 3. Every student deserves to get positive feedback and support from their teacher eve day. They shouldn’t need to earn it. Programs where students earn point for behavior or work are missing this critical point! 4. Research shows that school disciplinary policies disproportionately affect Black students. They are more likely to get called out for minor infractions than their white counterparts. By recognizing that minor infractions are often a cry for help, and a sign that this child needs to be supported, we can minimize the confirmation bias and build a stronger alliance with these children. Kenneth C. Williams shares his experience and expertise as a nationally recognized trainer, speaker, coach and consultant in leadership and school culture. A practitioner for nearly two decades, Ken led the improvement efforts at two schools by leveraging the Professional Learning Communities at Work process. Skilled in developing productive, student-focused learning environments, Ken is former principal of The Learning Academy at E. J. Swint in Jonesboro, Georgia, and Damascus Elementary School in Damascus, Maryland. His firsthand experience with transforming challenged schools translates into action-oriented presentations that inspire hope, create a clear vision, and offer practical strategies to those overwhelmed by challenges.
His leadership was crucial to creating a successful professional learning community (PLC) at Damascus, a challenged school that needed a new direction. The results of his efforts can be seen across all grade levels. Over a two-year period, the school’s state standardized test scores revealed a significant increase in the percentage of students performing at proficient and advanced levels. The process of building a PLC at E. J. Swint continues thanks to Kenneth’s work in laying a solid foundation in this underserved community.
Ken earned a bachelor of arts from Morehouse College, and a master of science from the University of Bridgeport. He is the author of Starting A Movement: Building Culture from the Inside Out in Professional Learning Communities, Creating Physical and Emotional Safety In Schools, and a contributor to The Collaborative Administrator.

The school system has it’s injustices. It is set up for certain types of students to succeed and it ignores other types of students, and for yet another group of students, it traps them in a never ending cycle of disciplinary action. How can we improve this system? Just like the tip of the iceberg is all you can see, but we know the bulk of it is beneath the surface, so too with students’ struggling, very often all we see is the “tip of the iceberg “. Nevertheless, a good teacher knows how to handle those kids, and it’s usually only one or two, who have the potential to wreck the rest of the class. Also, the boiling frog is the phenomenon when a frog is placed in a pot of water that is gradually brought to a boil, the frog doesn’t jump out because it is unaware of the gradual change. As a little girl, Karen was fascinated with machines. Her favorite toy was a Hot Wheels car. She often thought about integrating machines and technology into the world. Mugisho Ndabuli grew up as the fourth of nine children in his family in the Democratic Republic of Congo. His father encouraged him to get a good education. After receiving his diploma in General Education he enrolled in the Teachers Training College ISP Bukavu. He then taught in Rwanda and pursued a master’s degree in Peace Studies and Conflict Resolution from the prestigious South African university, University of KwaZulu Natal. He is currently pursuing a PhD from the same university. He is also the Founder and Executive Director of Congolese Females Action for Promoting Rights and Development. An organization that empowers village women survivors of war rape and family discrimination, and children of war raped mothers and victims of discrimination as well.
