Today I'm talking about how authenticity is one of the most important characteristics that any business owner or leader can have.
You might be a business owner but you’re also a human being, and that means that sometimes we can be influenced by our ego.
In this podcast, I look at the key traits of leadership and how authenticity ranks highly.
How you behave will influence your teams.
Are you fed up of being disturbed every five minutes by employees asking you for help and advice?
Do you wish they could just get on with it and leave you to focus on what’s really important?
You need to empower them.
Maybe you’ve created the situation with micromanaging or failing to delegate.
But now you have to turn it around.
Here’s why coaching is the real secret to empowering employees.
Someone on your team is not pulling their weight.
They’re not turning in work on time and it’s definitely not up to the standard you expect.
You have to confront them about their performance.
But wait. Is it really poor performance you’re seeing, or something else?
In this podcast, I want to take the mystery out of how to identify and manage poor performance.
When you own your own business, you’re probably so used to doing everything yourself that when the time comes to embrace growth and let go of the reins a little, you can find it very difficult, or even impossible.
Understanding your blockers to delegation is key.
Once you have done that then looking at the steps to delegate to make it effective comes next.
In The People Mentor podcast today I explore ways to get you delegating effectively.
Do you feel like the weight of the world is on your shoulders? Have profits taken a hit? Are costs up?
In this episode I explore how your team can help turn things around and being open to change is important.
Understanding what will help you influence and lead your employees to do their best is essential for your business to grow and scale.
In this podcast, we explore the components of an influential leader.
It took you a while to find your dream employee. They came on board and things were great for a while. Until one day, they weren’t. Their performance dipped, they started calling in sick, and it just felt like they’d lost their passion. Sounds familiar? In this podcast, I want to share with you the secret to retaining employees in your small business. Spoiler alert: It’s not paying them more money.
You’ve probably read about ‘the great resignation’ online.
As an employer, does it worry you that people might want to leave your business?
Are engagement and morale not what they could be?
In this podcast, I want to show you how you can do engagement better and show your people that the grass is not greener on the other side of the fence.
Fed up of investing in courses and not having the time to finish (or even start) them?
Sick of spending time and money in the hope of taking your business forward?
What you need is learning and guidance that’s affordable, accessible, and tuned into your needs.
Should you join my Success with Employees Membership?

We've all been there when we have thought what the hell is this person communicating to me. We scratch our heads and we ask a question or two but we are none the wiser.
It's amazing how communication can be lost in translation. In this podcast, I share some stories and I share some thoughts to help you as a small employer and leader bridge the gap so your messages don't get lost in translation.
Difficult conversations don't always go well and in those cases, you can learn so much from them. I share some of my stories where the difficult conversations gave me a real headache. And I share what I learnt with the tips I gained.
Think about the last difficult conversation you had. Were you so tempted to avoid it? Avoiding them is certainly easier in the short term, but in the long-term, the price you pay for avoidance is poor performance, poor team morale and motivation, and a downturn in business performance. In this podcast, I’m going to look at why we avoid difficult conversations and the real cost of doing so.
No manager enjoys difficult conversations but they are part and parcel of managing people.
There’s no blueprint for having successful difficult conversations in every situation, but there are things you can do to make difficult conversations go much more smoothly.
Here’s my podcast on 5 of the most difficult conversations you’ll have at work and how to navigate them.
When you are having difficult conversations, how you communicate can make or break your chances of a successful outcome.
Not every difficult conversation will go well, but there are some tips you can follow to improve the chances of having a successful outcome.
Here’s why better communication is the key to having difficult conversations.
A high-performing, productive, and profitable team that wants to work hard for the business is the dream, but is it your reality? When you look around, do you see low morale, poor motivation, and low productivity? Are your people fed up?
In today’s podcast, Nicola from The People Mentor talks about why motivating your team is one of your most important tasks as a manager, and how to turn things around if everything just feels a bit flat.
It was with great delight I interviewed Trisha Lewis, 'Communications extraordinaire'
Her past life plays into what she has created in her business.
Trisha was memorising to talk to and listening to her interview, I am sure you will find common ground somewhere in the podcast.
If I asked you about your team, your job, and the business, what would you say? Would you say ‘everything is fine’ and bury your head in the sand about anything that’s going wrong? Or would you be brave enough to face reality and really ask yourself what needs to change?
The People Mentor can help you do the latter.
In my time as a manager, I’ve seen the good, the bad, and the ugly of team dynamics, and I’ve seen the serious impact that problematic team dynamics can have on organisations. Performance and productivity drops, conflict arises, people leave, and this continues until someone breaks the cycle. In this podcast, I want to talk about how team dynamics can impact on productivity and how I can help you break the cycle.
A rare occasion these days with The People Mentor talking to Sarah Archer - Career Tree Coach around planning your career, how a good Manager can help and the work, life balance.
Summed up nicely from Sarah "Because we are seeing the world at work changing, and certainly organisations are thinking about moving away from office space"
Listen for more insights.
There are two things to know about change; one, it’s inevitable, and two, most people won’t like it.
But however change comes, the way we respond to it determines how successfully we adapt, and how well the business performs.
This is why nurturing a positive attitude towards change in yourself and your team is important; it can make change more acceptable, and it can help you move forward far more easily, with everyone on board.
In times of chaos, uncertainty, and turmoil, leaders have to build trust and confidence and maintain morale in their team. They need to bring calm to the chaos. But where should they start? It starts with THEM.
Working with colleagues who act superior, if you are not careful can lead to all kinds of emotions. It can spark anger, a feeling of insecurity and anxiety.
Learning how to respond to someone who thinks they are superior is a key skill. The People Mentor explores this situation giving you tips to help.
Change and uncertainty go hand in hand with being a manager, but our current circumstances have taken that to the extreme.
When you don’t have all of the answers (or any of them), it’s easy to panic and freeze, or make bad decisions.
In this podcast, Nicola from The People Mentor talks about how to manage in a VUCA world and not only survive but thrive.
Estate agents today have their work cut out trying to stand out in a crowded marketplace.
They are undercut right, left, and centre by online estate agents who market themselves on how cheap they are.
But cheap doesn’t equal value. That’s what today’s customers want, and when it comes to providing more value, training your team is key.
The People Mentor explains why.
There are many attributes that make a successful and effective leader, and determination is one of them. The ability to be unwavering in the pursuit of your goals, even in the face of adversity, has never been more important.

If you’ve listened to the other podcasts in this series, you’ll know that there are a number of things that contribute to, and build resilience.
There’s good physical health, emotional intelligence and self-awareness, and as well as that, another important thing that can impact on our resilience; the state of our relationships.
This includes personal and working relationships, and both are a source of support and strength. Here in the podcast I discuss how these can help your resilience
As a business owner, you’re probably very knowledgeable and savvy, but to be successful and resilient, you need to be emotionally intelligent as well.
So what is emotional intelligence? It’s about being able to identify and manage your own emotions and those of others. In a leadership context, this means that you’ll be able to understand others, communicate better, be less reactive, and make better decisions. In the podcast I explore building resilience

Think back to your previous jobs, maybe when you were just starting out. How much do you remember about your induction? Was everything in place for you? Were you welcomed into your new place of work? Or were you left alone, side-lined and unsure about where everything was or what you were supposed to be doing?
Sadly, the latter is quite common. Given how much it costs to recruit a new employee and get them up to speed, there should be a proper induction process in place.
Listen for more tips to keep your employees
In this podcast, I’m looking at health and safety. This can be an area that overwhelms many business owners, because it can seem like there are so many legal hoops to jump through, but the consequences of neglecting your health and safety obligations can have very serious consequences.
Hiring the right employees can give you your time back so you get to spend more time on the things that are going to help grow your business and help you have a better work-life balance.
That is the dream, and I’m not here to dash it. But the reality is that being an employer brings with it legal responsibilities. The right contracts and policies need to be put in place to protect you, your employees, and your business.
Have a listen to my tips

Many business owners become self-employed in the hope that one day, they’ll have more freedom and their business will be able to run without them.
They envisage having enough personal and financial freedom to spend more time with their families, relaxing, and enjoying life.
Sadly, the reality for many business owners is that they end up working, answering calls, and solving problems when they take time off. This is mainly because they’re the go-to person for everything, and they’ve often positioned themselves this way.
Listen to gain some tips to move away from this.

Resilience is the ability to overcome challenges, setbacks, and problems, and come back even stronger than before. But it’s not just about overcoming challenges, it’s about learning from them, and seeing them as an opportunity for improvement. You shouldn’t fear challenges and problems, or see them as failures, or weaknesses; you need to experience difficulties to become more resilient.
The question you should ask yourself, though, is do you approach challenges and problems in a way that build resilience?
