When you consider the fact that human beings have been living in tribes and communities for the entirety of our existence, there couldn't be a more important time to talk about how to create that connection than now... in this time of distancing and isolation during the COVID19 crisis.

Philip is an anthropologist, an expert in the four archetypes as they relate to the hero’s journey, a ropes-course master, and has served as a consultant, trainer, and guide for high performing teams all over the country.

In this conversation, we cover all of the following (and more):

  • The importance of connection and community celebration
  • How shining light on others in your tribe builds trust, camaraderie, collective success, and honor.
  • Why tribe is so important, especially right now
  • How to shift from isolation to connection
  • How to empower yourself to thrive in today’s environment by choosing it.
  • The 3 pillars of kinship

I hope you enjoy this conversation as much as I did!

Notes:

We also start connecting when feeling isolated

Connection - shine a light on your tribe. When you win, I win and visa versa. Celebrate the wins of people in your tribe. Honor based cultures. Celebrating the collective success. Their success is your success.

The false narrative of the lone wolf - Hollywood glorified - Rambo, The Lone Ranger. Not powerful. The lone wolf starves to death in the wild. Humans are wired for inherent collaborative relationships.

Lone wolves under one banner don’t win… until they became team players. Toss and assist.

When isolated from the pack/tribe, it triggers a “death response” in the amygdala. That is why “shame” is such a significant trigger. It makes you feel like you’re not accepted… the threat of isolation/ex-communication. The brain releases cortisol - to prep to fight to survive. Shuts down non-vital organs and immune system.

Feeling isolated? Must start a protocol of connecting.

We are not socially distancing, we are physically distancing. We are tighter than ever today.

Pain, when unresolved, it becomes resentment, which then becomes contempt - and then it’s time for separation,

Perspective creates reality.
When looking at this as enforced isolation, it’s externally enforced.
When looking at this as solitude and it’s an opportunity for growth, reflection, healing, etc, it’s internally enforced. It’s a choice
When it’s MY choice… I’m empowered.
Ownership… don’t let someone else’s enforced rules become YOUR prison

When you can no longer change your situation, you’re forced to change yourself. - Victor Frankl

When in chaos, we must chunk it down into small amounts we can manage.

There are situations… but there are never problems. Problems are always in the past or in the future.

The apple represented metacognition. Self-awareness, what is going to happen in the future, and ultimately, death… the perfect recipe for anxiety, worry, fear. Humans have been cursed with remembering the past (regrets, depression), and thinking about the future (anxiety)... also a source of power - remembering the past (learn from it), thinking about the future (plan).. Yin Yang of our journey.

Resiliency in a sense of belonging.

WWII - the blitz of London - substantial drop in depression and anxiety and increased morale and resiliency got higher than ever. Trauma bonding.

Kinship pillars
1 purpose, why, vision
2 values - growth, service
3 mission

A few days ago, I hopped on Zoom with Professional Life Coach and thought Leader Carolyn Freyer-Jones for the first of a new series of Facebook Live conversations.

It seems like this format is really resonating with our community, even more so than my podcast, because it’s shorter, more accessible, and more fun.

People have been reaching out to me non-stop about how much they loved the convo, and how helpful it was for them.

In the conversation, Carolyn and I talk about how to deal with the unstable footing that we all find ourselves on, finding peace in all of the uncertainty, being of service, the illusion of control… and so much more.

Enjoy!

Dr. Dawn DeSylvia, MD, is a nationally recognized family medicine doctor with over 15 years of
experience in Functional and Integrative Medicine. After completing her training at UCLA, Dr.
DeSylvia worked at the UCLA Malibu Clinic, Santa Monica Hospital, and served on the faculty
at UCLA. In 2013, she opened The Center for Whole Health, where she works with patients to
identify the root causes of disease and foster optimal health.

As founder and medical director of The Center for Whole Health, it is Dr. DeSylvia’s mission
to:

  • Provide exceptional integrative medicine that is consistent in care and integrity
  • Bridge the work of advanced medicine with cellular biology, neuroscience, and
    contemplative wisdom
  • Bring forth the most advanced interventions available in health and wellbeingWant to learn more about functional medicine... and about the key areas of your body to focus on and address to have the biggest impact on your health and well-being?

I'm super excited about this episode... mostly because Dr. Dawn is my personal functional medicine doctor, meaning that for the first time in my life, I had the opportunity to sit down for a long conversation about health and well-being with my own doctor! And by the way, she didn't disappoint...

In this episode, we dive deep into things like the brain, the gut, and the role that "belief" plays in healing. I really appreciate her humanness, and willingness to slow down and describe things in a way that "the rest of us" can understand and relate to.

This was a great conversation... I know you're going to love this episode!!

Enjoy!

In his early 20s, David Meltzer was at the top of his game in the business world and lecturing around the globe. But despite his success, he felt that something was missing, and the multimillionaire went on a rapid downward spiral that ended in bankruptcy.

It was only then that David realized, in order to revive and thrive, he needed to blend spirituality with business. He started to meld his newfound life and business outlook as CEO to sports super agent Leigh Steinberg (played by Tom Cruise in Jerry Maguire), and the result of his transformation is the remarkably successful venture - Sports 1 Marketing - that he began with Pro Football Hall of Fame Quarterback Warren Moon.

From Andy:Dave is one of the most successful people I've ever had the opportunity of having on the podcast, and also one of the most genuine, relatable, and generous. It came as a surprise to me given the cutthroat, ego-driven business (sports agent, deal making, sports marketing) for which he's at the top of the game. He was incredibly open, sharing the behind the scenes story about getting Steve Young signed to the 49ers when they already had Joe Montana as their go-to guy, and also sharing his "secrets" of negotiating and deal-making. He's driven to succeed, but also to give, serve, and contribute to humanity - which he's doing every day.

Enjoy!

Ian has also been featured on the health report on ABC radio, ABC radio national and numerous podcasts. Dr. Dunican has appeared on ABC television in Australia and was a TEDx Perth speaker in 2017 and is a regular reviewer for scientific peer-reviewed journals.

He is currently the Director of Melius Consulting/Sleep4Performance and has recently completed a PhD with the University of Western Australia (UWA), where he worked with elite sporting organisations and athletes to optimize performance. Some of his clients are Olympic and elite athletes with the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS), professional teams in Super Rugby, basketball, Australian Rules Football (AFL), and martial arts (judo, boxing, grappling).

As an ultra-runner, Ian has completed numerous mountain ultra-runs in Australia and the infamous Leadville 100 mile, an off-road foot race in the Colorado Rockies where he ran for 27 hrs 42 minutes!

Ian is a regular speaker at universities and international conferences in sports performance and physiology and regularly contributes articles to publications such as with the Australian Financial Review.

From Andy:

Ian is on a mission - to help people figure out why they might be having trouble sleeping, and then to help them figure out what the heck to do about it. His approach is far-reaching and holistic, as there really isn’t any part of life that is not capable of contributing to poor sleep hygiene.

Our conversation was broad including topics like email, social media, apps, and fitness trackers, to your schedule, travel, sleep apnea, Netflix, and caffeine.

If you don’t come away from this podcast with at least one fresh new idea about something that you could do to improve your sleep, you weren’t listening hard enough.

Enjoy!

Dr. Sean Pastuch is the Founder and CEO of Active Life Rx where he is on a mission to change the way Active people improve their soft tissue and joint health. Dr. Sean believes that the way to make healthcare inspiring again is to get it out of the doctor’s office and into the gym. With help from his team, Dr. Sean has been able to help people remotely, from all walks of life avoid surgery and work towards elite performance through coaching and programming.

In his own words, "I am passionate as can be about coaching other people reach their potential be it intellectually, in business, or physically. This is especially true for my thrill for parenting. I feel like this is the masterpiece coaching job of my career and there is nothing I take more pride in than seeing something I taught one of my daughters take shape and provide them value in one way or another.

In his daily practice, Dr. Sean treats professional and recreational athletes alike to get them back on the field or in the gym. He is also well practiced in treating patients with little or no athletic background who simply want to live an active lifestyle.

He has also provided trainer education programs for Equinox Fitness Clubs, New York Sports Clubs, The Fitness Education Institute, and The Personal Training Institute and coaches classes at CrossFit King of Island Park, NY.

From Andy:

What a refreshing conversation. I love Dr. Sean’s mission - keeping people out of the doctor’s office and in their lives, pursuing what they love. I also love the way he is unabashedly out in the world pursuing it, preaching it, living it.

One of the things I love about Sean is his humbleness. In fact, you’d be hard pressed to ever hear him touting the fact that he is, in fact, a doctor of chiropractic, as he feels it interferes with clients expectations of what that title means, and with his ability to help people heal through whatever means necessary.

Two of the coolest parts of the convo - 1) understanding the underlying “why” behind any client’s goals, and 2) our discussion of the difference between flexibility and mobility. It’s probably not what you think (but you’ll have to listen in to find out).

Enjoy!

Bart Yasso, known as the “Mayor of Running,” is the now-retired Runner's World Chief Running Officer, and author of My Life on the Run and Race Everything. In addition to his induction into the Running USA Hall of Champions, Yasso was recently inducted into the Road Runners Club of America Distance Running Hall of Fame.

Yasso started running in the late '70s on a whim. Finding it both easy and natural, he fell in love with the sport for its measurability and simplicity. A decade and thousands of miles later, in 1987, he joined the staff of Runner's World.

He was also the creator of a marathon training workout called Yasso 800s that has become known around the world as a legit track training workout for marathons. Here's how it works: Take your marathon time, but instead of looking at it as hh:mm, look at it as mm:ss, then do 10 x 800m intervals with a 400m rest interval. (Example: A marathon time of 3 hrs and 30 min becomes 3 min and 30 seconds. So you'd do your 800's at that 3:30 pace).

He is one of the few people to have completed races on all seven continents from the Antarctica marathon to the Mt. Kilimanjaro marathon. In 1987, Yasso won the U.S. National Biathlon Long Course Championship and won the Smoky Mountain Marathon in 1998. He has also completed the Ironman five times and the Badwater 146 through Death Valley. He has also cycled, unsupported and by himself, across the country twice.

From Andy: This conversation really surprised me. Not that I didn't think it would be good, but that I had no idea what to expect as I didn't know the extent of Bart's experience and reach in the world of running. There isn't much he hasn't done, and his love for the sport really comes out. He's also quick to point out that by far the most meaningful experiences he's had over his varied career have had everything to do with the people and the difference he's made for them, runners or not.

His stories about the Badwater 146 and cycling cross-country are unforgettable, as are the things he shares about the people whose lives he's touched and who have touched his.

Enjoy this one. I sure did!

From Andy: Thiswas just about the most fun I've ever had in a conversation about some seriously scientific and technical stuff - the human biome and gut. Ara and Raja were so good at taking their vast knowledge and expertise, boiling it down to the things that are most important, and explaining it in a way that a normal layperson can understand. The developments we're making in the research of the microbiome and gut are so exciting and cutting edge - this is a conversation that you've got to take the time to check out!

For Thad Beaty, musician-turned-triathlete, “Music That Moves” is the literal summation of his incredible journey thus far. A guitarist who has spent 9 years with country juggernaut Sugarland, he has shared stages with Lady Gaga, Bon Jovi, Kenny Chesney, Rhianna, and Beyoncé as well as contributing as a writer on albums selling upwards of 10 million copies.

After his mother’s diagnosis with colon cancer and his own realization that the rock and roll lifestyle had resulted in his own poor health, he set out on a new journey to reclaim his health, the health of his family, and now, a quickly growing community of triathletes all over the world.

Music That Moves was born out of Thad’s journey back to health in all areas of his life. Through the medium of a plant-based diet combined with a goal to compete in an IRONMAN, Thad found himself over 70 pounds lighter and surrounded by fellow athletes and musicians who wanted his help with their own journeys. Never one to do anything halfway, he dove in head first and pursued multiple coaching certifications (USA Triathlon Level 2, USAC Level 2, Training Peaks Level 2, USMS Level 2, Newton Running, Dynamic Movement Assessment,TRX, Spartan SGX, Triathlon Research, and Scheduled to sit for his Nutritionist certification and NSCA CSCS) to better coach the athletes he is leading.

After discovering his passion to affect people’s lives for positive change, Thad was asked to be a celebrity mentor on ABC’s Extreme Makeover Weight-loss Edition, helping to coach and train a participant to complete the New Zealand Half-Ironman.

From Andy:
Thad is one of the most down-to-earth real rock stars that I've ever spoken with. His willingness to get real and raw and share some of the realities of his life made the conversation light, fun, entertaining, and enlightening. He's got a serious passion for helping others change their lives in a similar way to the way he's changed his. You're going to LOVE this one!

Enjoy!

Katja Pantzar is a Helsinki-based writer, editor and broadcast journalist. Her newest book was published in the UK, Germany, and in June 2018 in the USA.

It's called The Finnish Way: Finding Courage, Wellness, and Happiness through the Power of Sisu (Tarcher Perigee/Penguin Books).

The Finnish Way takes readers on a journey to Finland and explores simple and sensible ways to boost well-being inspired by the Nordic lifestyle ranging from winter swimming and cycling to the Nordic diet – all through the special Finnish concept of courage and resilience called sisu.

FROM ANDY: There is something about sisu that is incredibly appealing to me. So much so that after reading Katja's book I started taking cold showers every day simply to inject some sisu into my everyday life. Sisu is easy to manifest in your everyday life, and Katja does a great job revealing that in her book and in our conversation. Yes, you too can benefit from a little sisu in your life. Listen in our conversation for inspiration, ideas, and understanding why.

Enjoy!

Mark Sisson is founder of Primal Nutrition, LLC and Primal Kitchen, LLC, New York Times Bestselling Author, health and wellness revolutionary, and founder of Mark’s Daily Apple, the #1-ranked blog for over a decade in its health and fitness category. He is also wrote The Primal Blueprint, which was credited with turbocharging the growth of the primal/paleo movement back in 2009.

Prior to his life as a health and wellness educator and leader, Mark was a gifted runner and triathlete. In 1980, he qualified for the US Olympic Trials, and earned a 4th place finish in the Hawaii Ironman World Championships. The inhuman amount of training and weekly racing those results required was taking its toll, though. Mark found himself constantly sick or injured. That pushed him to explore nutrition and supplementation as a way to enhance his performance, to support his damaged body, and to bolster his immune system.

Mark retired from competition in 1988 and decided to do whatever he could to help others avoid making the kinds of health mistakes that he had made. Mark uses his pre-medical background, degree in biology, and an intense desire to unlock the health secrets that he knew were out there—answers to questions about health, wellness, anti-aging, safe weight-loss, nutrition and supplementation—to find the natural ways of achieving good health for himself and others.

FROM ANDY: I'm always stoked to have a recorded conversation with Mark. He and I have been friends for many years, and I always learn something new each time I talk to him. This time was no exception. In fact, in this podcast, we were able to cover topics about each of the WLC's 7 Daily Habits.

You'll want to take notes during this one for sure!

Paul Greive is making a difference. He's the co-founder and CEO of PastureBird - the country's largest supplier of REAL pasture raised, free-range chicken in the Country. And what do I mean by real? Well, "pasture raised", when you see it on packaging in the market, doesn't mean what you think it does.

Here's his story:

When Paul got out of the military in 2011 and became a Certified Public Accountant, he decided to do something about his aching joints, arthritis, and constant Motrin use. He'd heard the hype about Paleo but never committed to trying it out. He finally gave it a go and after two weeks he says he felt like a kid again. He could breathe through his nose, his joint pain was gone, energy levels were up, and his sleep returned to normal.

His wife and her whole family even jumped on board. People were losing weight, feeling better, and just overall healthier and happier. They were working hard to find good, clean foods and spending a lot of extra money on fancy labels like "grass fed", "free range", "organic", and "antibiotic free".

The problem was, the more he learned about labels the more he found that they were complete BS. Free Range chickens never actually went outside, and "Antibiotic Free" birds actually got a bunch of antibiotics. Oh, and organic, that just dealt with a single certification for the feed. Wait, what?

He felt cheated, misled, and lied to.

Then, in April of 2012, the family sat around together over Easter, joking around about getting some chickens for the backyard. Nobody had any type of a farming or livestock background, so Paul thought it was just a big joke. But sure enough, his brother in law Rob disappeared from the room for about 5 minutes and returned with a big grin on his face.

"Guys, I just ordered 50 chicks and they'll be here in 2 weeks" Rob said.

From Andy:

The more I learned about Paul's story, the more disturbed I became about the quality of the food that's on my family's dinner table. Do the chicken and eggs we spend good money on based on their labels actually meet the standards that a "reasonable person" would expect from the words "free range" and "pasture raised"?

Listen, learn, and get inspired to take action!

Kevin Rose is a pioneer in the tech world. He's been named in the list of the Top 25 Angel Investors (Bloomberg), Top 25 Web Celebrities (Forbes), Top 25 Most Influential People on the Web (Time and Businessweek), and
Top 35 Innovators under 35 (MIT).

He founded the social news site Digg, was a general partner at Google Ventures (investing in companies like Ripple, Medium, and Nextdoor), and prior to that started investing as an Angel investor in Twitter, Facebook and Square.

From Andy:

The thing I love about Kevin, and the real reason he's on this podcast, is his playful and experimental spirit - his approach to life that has him trying and failing over and again, until he figures out for himself what works (and what doesn't). To me, he exemplifies 'Beginner's Mind' (Shoshin) as he stumbles his way forward in life, listening, learning, growing, and staying humble.

He uses this approach with all that he does, including developing a really fantastic (and free) meditation app that I use daily called Oak. He has also been part of in the self-optimization world for many years, researching and learning a ton about his own health metrics, testing, biomarkers, genetic markers, and life-optimization. All of this he's incredibly open with and full of suggestions for how to get started down this path in your own life (and the importance of doing so.)

Enjoy this one - I know you will!

Tracy Sundlun is best known as one of the co-founders of the Rock 'n' Roll Marathon Series, which with his involvement, grew to 29 events in 15 states, Washington DC, and 6 other countries, in which over 500,000 runners competed each year. He has over 4 decades of involvement in virtually every facet of the sports of track and field, long distance running, and race walking.

His experience includes everything from coaching (including at Georgetown, Colorado, USC, and over 100 athletes going to the Olympic Games); to sports administration, event creation (founder of the National Scholastic Indoor and Outdoor Track & Field Championships), and athlete representation, sponsorship sales, and charity fundraising.

Tracy has been at the forefront of a number of the sports’ innovations and advances over the past 40 years, including the1974 effort to introduce and involve chiropractic in track & field, in 1980 when he initiated the first test case with prize money and above-the-table appearance money in long distance running, and more recently in 2005, he created the first Wave Start plans for marathons and half marathons to better manage the density and comfort of runners on the course.

Tracy's actions, events, and programs have always epitomized his core belief that sport should positively impact all of society and look to include as opposed to exclude, involving all constituencies and athletes of all ages and abilities. His recent accolades include induction into the Running USA Hall of Champions and being named head manager of the United States Men’s Track & Field Team for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro

Tracy now runs Everything Running, a small consulting company focused on “anything and everything track and field, running, and race walking."

From Andy:

It's rare these days that you get a chance to sit down and hear stories from a true legend, leader, and innovator in a modern sport. I consider myself incredibly fortunate to have had the opportunity to do just this with Tracy Sundlun. His stories are mesmerizing, as he takes me back to times in the running world when things that we take for granted today were totally non-existent. This is modern-history (that isn't done yet) and storytelling at it's finest. ENJOY!

Dr. Mark Goulston is a psychiatrist, a mentor to top executives and CEOs, bestselling author, and is considered to be the world's number one expert in deep listening and influence. His book, Just Listen, is the top book on listening in the world. He teaches listening for empathy around the world to highly diverse groups of people including FBI and SWAT hostage negotiators, coaches, teachers and educators, and recently in Moscow to over 400 managers and CEOs from the Russian Federation.

Mark's other six books include Get Out of Your Own Way, first published in 1996, which has been in the top 20 self-help books at Amazon for the past ten years. His current focus is assisting high-performers win in business without losing at life. His book, PTSD for Dummies serves as a foundation for his teaching and training of traumatized people to heal and thrive.

From Andy:

The empathy with which Mark listens is really like a superpower. The cool thing is that you can learn it too (he teaches us how). He calls it "listening for" instead of "listening to." He also has a technique called the "Fud Crud" intervention. It's really about dealing with what lies underneath anger, upset, and sadness... disappointment. These are just two of the methods/techniques we talk about during the interview.

My take... if you get good at even just one of these, it has the power to transform every relationship in your life. Seriously. Listen up and sharpen your pencils... I hope you enjoy this one as much as I did.

Thanks, Dr. Mark!!

Josh Mantz graduated from West Point in 2005 and received the Purple Heart and Bronze Star with Valor while serving in combat in Iraq. In 2007, Josh died after suffering a gunshot wound in Baghdad, only to be miraculously revived by an expert medical team after his heart stopped for a full fifteen minutes.

To chronicle his journey back from the dead to a place of truly living, Josh wrote his #1 best-selling book, The Beauty of a Darker Soul. The book carries a universal message about trauma that empowers people to transcend through their most challenging experiences.

From Andy:

The most compelling part of Josh's story is, of course, his experience with death (he remembers every detail of the last few minutes of his life.) But after peeling some layers back, it becomes clear that that was just the start of his journey. Today, after working through his own demons, he is committed to helping others through their mental, emotional, and spiritual crises, in addition to their physical trauma.

Kevin Carter is a 14-Year NFL veteran, Super Bowl Champion, Sports Broadcaster, Entrepreneur and Philanthropist. He recently hosted the highest rated college gameday show on ESPNU - The Experts and College Game Day.

With four stellar seasons in the NFL, Carter turned his fifth season with the Rams into the best of his career. In 1999 he led the NFL in sacks with 17, earning him Pro Bowl, All-Pro, and All-Madden honors. Carter accomplished his ultimate goal as an NFL player that same year. With his help, the St. Louis Rams defeated the Tennessee Titans in Super Bowl XXXIV, earning the team its only Super Bowl title in team history.

Not only did Kevin make plays on the field, but off the field as well with vast community endeavors through The Kevin Carter Foundation, which he began in 2002. He was voted by his Titans’ teammates as the Community Man of the Year during three of the four seasons he spent with the team.

Throughout his career, Carter fell in love with philanthropy and giving back to the community. In 2002 he began a unique celebrity charity event in Nashville entitled Waiting for Wishes Celebrity Waiters Dinner, where celebrities join him to wait tables for patrons. April 2018 marked the 17th Anniversary for the event, which has raised over $2.2 million for The Kevin Carter Foundation and Make- A-Wish Middle Tennessee.

Looking back on his career, Carter says what he is most proud of is the work he has been able to do in the community, raising millions of dollars for various causes through his foundation.

FROM ANDY: I was touched, moved, and inspired by Kevin's commitment to helping others, especially after watching the video on his website here, and felt compelled to have him on as a guest. While yes, Kevin was a pro football player, which is interesting in and of itself, his work today is focused on supporting his wife and son, and in helping others gain access to many of the opportunities he's had in his life.

In short, he's using his celebrity for doing good and helping others. That's the focus of our podcast conversation. This one was more like a close conversation with a good friend than it was an interview, as Kevin opens up the things that challenge him in his life today and how he's setting himself up for the future.

Enjoy!

Episode Notes — 147: Kevin Carter * Kevin’s philanthropy work: How the measure of a man is not what happens on the field, but what happens once the lights turn off. * Kevin’s childhood… it’s not anything like what you would think: Coke-bottle glasses, plump, speech impediment, emotional, a dreamer, and band-geek. * His mom’s powerful influence on the context of his life and being a hero. * As a kid, he committed to always standing up for the underdog, the underpriviledged. * Kevin tried out for his junior varsity football and basketball teams his freshman year of high school - didn’t make either. While his older brother was smart, strong, good looking, and the super athlete. * He had a massive growth spurt between freshman and sophomore years and everything changed on the outside. * Became All-Everything and decided to live in to being the man he committed to being as a kid - one that is a true Hero - using his “celebrityness,” fame and visibility to do good in the world. * How his work is like a tsunami that you never saw coming, yet is powerful beyond measure. * Kevin’s event - a one night per year event called Waiting for Wishes has generated $2.5 million to the Make A Wish Foundation over the past 17 years. * The problem with how we listen and communicate. * Is debate as a form of communication really valuable or does it increase the understanding gap? * First seek to understand, then to be understood. * Kevin’s take on the sport of football, the NFL, and concussions. * How should kids be introduced to combative sports like football? * The split-second decisions that athletes make playing sports like baseball and football. * Q: How does a former pro-football player keep fit? A: Marry a woman who is fitter and healthier than he is. * Keeping ahead of father time. How? Drinks only 3 things, including tons of water. Learn his “secret” strategy. * How his metabolism has changed since his early days in the NFL * Kevin’s eating strategy * How keeping organized and structuring his time is a work in progress. * Kevin’s primary job is to be the main “doer” at home - groceries, cleaners, dishes, errands, supplies, general maintenance and supporting his wife and son. * He’s also a high school football coach and part time (during football season) analyst on ESPN. * Strongest calling now is to be a great husband and dad - not to pursue other things outside of household. * Struggle now is balancing his inner desire to branch out into new and exciting directions personally, and REALLY being there for his son and wife. Right now, being husband and father is winning out, but it’s still a struggle. * New practice - mindfulness and meditation from a book by Thich Nhat Hanh. * What is your definition of success? Serving family, wife, and son. Truly connecting and participating in their lives. Being a better man. * Shifting your context from “I have to,” to “I want to.” * Working with Coach Dick Vermeil and how he helped him learn to turn off his default emotional response, which served him well as a football player. * Balancing not taking ourselves too seriously with taking ourselves seriously. * The importance to Kevin of being able to look in the mirror and like what he sees (as substantive)

Charles Mayfield, both an early adopter and leader in the paleo nutrition world, got started down this road based on personal desire to put the best, healthiest, and nutritious food on the table for himself and his family. His intention recently expanded from that to now include being responsible for raising healthy livestock and taking care of our land, making it sustainable and renewable for years and generations to come. Charles is the co-author of one of the first cookbooks ever written for paleo recipes, is the co-founder of Atlanta Strength and Conditioning, and is the owner of his own farm, Mayfield Pastures, primarily for providing pastured poultry, pork and beef for his family while building the size and infrastructure to expand his operation and offerings to his local community.

Charles is also an avid hunter, gardener, distiller, and BJJ enthusiast. This was a particularly fun interview for me as Charles and I connect on so many things at so many levels. He was an early adopter of CrossFit, he attended the CrossFit Games in 2009, the one in which I competed, he was friends with Robb Wolf before Robb was a known figure, and he co-wrote one of my favorite of all time paleo cookbooks! When I met him at Paleo FX, I was amazed that we hadn't spent more time getting to know one another prior to that time. Charles' farm adventure is incredibly inspiring, considering the fact that he's only been at it for 2 years. After reading and studying the likes of Joel Salatin and regenerative farming, he decided to take action (many of us never get to this part... thinking about an idea for years before doing anything to move forward.) Moving his family from Atlanta to rural Tennessee, he built a regenerative farm with chickens, pigs and cows, and his entire family is reaping the rewards of it today. I hope you enjoy this episode as much as I did!

Paul Chek is a holistic health practitioner, a.k.a. "a healer." He developed a knack for it quite by accident about 30 years ago, when his teammates on the US Army boxing team found that they felt better and healed faster after having him work on them. He went on to study healing arts for the majority of two decades all over the world. He didn't leave a stone unturned, learning from as many different types of healers possible, in as many different modalities. As a result, he developed an innate capacity to heal others - especially when traditional methods didn't work. He's also known for having been largely responsible for first introducing the Swiss Ball to the world as an exercise tool for rehab, corrective exercise, and training.

In an effort to reach more people with his vast knowledge base and experience, he founded the CHEK Institute where he teaches his methods and philosophies to health practitioners from all over the world. His programs and approach, addressing the foundational root causes of a problem, have literally changed the lives of thousands of his clients, his students, and their clients.

Paul is currently a sought-after international presenter and consultant for companies like the Chicago Bulls, Australia’s Canberra Raiders, and the US Air Force Academy. He has also produced over 60 DVDs and 17 advanced-level home study courses and has had articles featured in Wall Street Journal, Men’s Health, Glamour magazine as well as TV and radio. His book, The Golf Biomechanics Manual and course are PGA-approved, and have been adopted for use by professional golf schools, as well as featured on the Golf Channel.

Paul is a registered Native American Spirit Guide and Medicine Man with the Nemenhah Band (people of the truth) and Native American Traditional Organization (NAC) where he initiates a process of awakening comprehensive healing through sacred ceremony.

From Andy:

This was an especially meaningful conversation for me as Paul was one of my first mentors in the fitness industry (I went through many of his correspondence courses and three of his certifications). Paul's ability to assess disease states down into their foundational elements, and then to create a healing program addressing them is one of his truly great gifts, as his willingness to teach it to thousands of practitioners around the world. His contribution to the world of health and healing is massive.

I especially loved the part of this podcast where we talk about how he's boiled down everyone's everyday health to what he calls "The Last 4 Doctors You'll Ever Need" - Dr. Happiness, Dr. Movement, Dr. Quiet, and Dr. Diet.

Enjoy!

Katie Wells, the “Wellness Mama,” is a wife, a mom of six, an award-winning blogger, author, podcaster, and a real-food crusader. Her mission with WellnessMama.com is to provide simple answers for healthier families through practical tips, real food recipes, natural beauty and cleaning tutorials, natural remedies and more.

To handle her daily workload, Katie has developed systems and tips for living a Wellness Lifestyle™ with a family, and on a budget. She was recently named by Greatist.com as one of the 100 most influential people in health and wellness along with Dr. Oz, Dr. Mercola, Food Babe and Tim Ferriss.

From Andy:

Katie in one word - "amazing". She has intentionally set up her life (and her family's life) to be in alignment with who she is and what she values. To do that, she's had to make some really significant changes and sacrifices, and it hasn't always been comfortable or easy, but she and her family and kids are already starting to reap the rewards of her efforts. Her story is a reminder to me of the importance of aligning our lives and our actions with what we truly value.

During the podcast, we cover so many important health, life, and well-being topics there are way too many to list. Suffice it to say you should grab a set of headphones, sharpen up your pencil, and take out your yellow pad to be sure you don't miss anything while listening.

Megan Morrone is a technology journalist hosting video shows covering tech news, longform interviews, and tips for normal people trying to make their way in a world where tech can be as confusing as it is ubiquitous. She is also a freelance writer, wife, and mom to three children and one dog (who reads and responds to her email for her and helps her attain inbox-zero!)

Since 2015 Megan has been hosting and producing shows on TWiT (This Week in Tech), Leo Laporte’s technology network. She currently hosts iOS Today (a show about how to use your iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, and Apple TV) and Tech News Weekly (a show that keeps you up-to-date on all the tech news that matters.) She co-hosts Know How (a maker show), Triangulation (a longform interview show), and The New Screen Savers (a tech variety show). She also covers live tech events and product announcements.

From Andy:

This was a really special conversation for me. I have been a HUGE fan of Leo Laporte and Megan Morrone for many years. Leo has had a radio show called “The Tech Guy” (who is Leo) on KFI in Los Angeles on Saturdays for almost 20 years that I’ve listened to on and off since it’s inception. And I’ve known Megan as his counterpoint on TWiT TV (This Week in Tech). When I saw via Twitter that Megan was reviewing our WLC App on TWiT TV, I almost fell over! By the way – the review is as fantastic as it is hilarious – you can watch it here.

After watching the review, I started up a conversation with Megan on Twitter – when she asked me if she could come on the podcast to talk about tech, health, and fitness! Of course, I said yes… and the rest, as they say, is history.

Enjoy!

Jimmy Rosenberg was looking for a way to make some dough in the summer of 1983. He got this idea…sell juice on the beach. So he got some fruit, blended it in his kitchen, and started selling the juice by the cup (poured from a jug) on the beach in Santa Monica. Little did he know that inauspicious start would lead to the formation of two mega juice companies – Naked Juice and Evolution Fresh.

His first attempt, a pretty impressive first attempt by the way, was a company called The Naked Juice Company. After growing it to a size that allowed him to serve most of California, he sold it and got out of the juice business entirely. But not for long. Two years later, with a renewed commitment to delivering the highest quality juice possible to consumers, he started Evolution Fresh. He steered this company for 19 years before being acquired by Starbucks in 2011.

Before I sat down with Jimmy, I didn’t tell him that I’d be asking him for photos and a bio, or that I’d be posting his story about this podcast on social media. He’s a very private person. He’s never been on social media and has never shared these incredible stories about the two companies he’s championed. Fortunately for us all, and in spite of this, he agreed to proceed. I’m incredibly grateful for his willingness to share his story, and trust me, you will be too!

The thing I relate to most about Jimmy – he’s just an ordinary guy like you and me. But for some reason, he was willing to listen, to experiment, to put in the hard work, to be open to learning on the job, and to be steadfast in his commitment to never sacrifice the quality of his product. These have all be part of his journey, all part of the reason he’s been so successful, twice!

Listen. Love. Learn. This story has it all.

Enjoy!

Dr. Jeremy Brook, aka “The Spinechecker,” is a Los Angeles-based chiropractor, yogi, and movement specialist. He is the founder of The Life Center Chiropractic, a unique healing oasis that incorporates the disciplines of chiropractic, spinal corrective protocols, yoga, and other movement art forms to make sure the spine, body, and mind are aligned.

In addition to his private practice, Dr. Brook has been teaching an anthropological, evolutionary and energetic approach to anatomy and also teaches chiropractic adjusting seminars to Doctors of Chiropractic and students of chiropractic. When he’s not “spinechecking” and adjusting, he can be found on his yoga mat, lifting weights at Deuce Gym, and slacklining between palm trees on Venice Beach.

From Andy:

Dr. Brook (or Jeremy as I call him during the podcast) is my chiropractor. I went to him about 8 months ago thinking that chiropractic was the last thing I needed. I couldn’t have been more wrong. Through a regular practice of adjustments and full body exercises to address the hips, spine, shoulders, and neck, I’ve seen my spinal and full-body mobility take a dramatic turn for the better.

Jeremy has an amazing way about him. Part doctor, part healer, part yogi, and part athlete, he’s able to bring a real-life, practical approach to his healing practice that is incredibly unique. He’s built a program and culture in his office that is strong, encouraging, and self-propagating. And in terms of chiropractic, he will challenge whatever preconceived notion you have of its purpose. He also lays down a solid foundation for its place in the world of health and well-being for all functional aspects of your body.

Hope you love this conversation as much as I did! Enjoy!

How do you describe Ronnie Teasdale? Figuring out how to capture him in conversation and in writing, that’s the problem I ran into after spending a few hours with him recording the podcast.

Ronnie grew up in Michigan playing hockey practically every day of his life until he was 23 years old. At the height of his hockey “career,” he was what I’d call an “enforcer” — the guy you’d put in to take out (by brute force) whatever player on the other team was scoring goals or causing problems. Sports, to him, were a zero-sum game. Someone wins, someone loses — and doing anything necessary to win was just part of the game.

When he moved west to California, he did so to pursue a more holistic calling. With degrees in psychology and exercise science from Oakland University, Ronnie opened a gym, started studying yoga, and left his hockey and win at all costs mindset behind.

Then he discovered CrossFit, the sport of fitness. Since he already knew how to win, this was a way to combine his prior-life mindset with his newfound passion for fitness. He opened a new gym called CrossFit Mean Streets, and became known in the world of CrossFit as a fierce competitor, bad boy, and also a super-fit human.

But there was a side to Ronnie that no one really knew — a side that he talks about a lot in our conversation. His quest has always been to optimize human performance, and he has been able to achieve that since leaving hockey with quite unorthodox methods involving recovery, rejuvenation, and optimization rather than super hard or aggressive training.

Ronnie now is finishing up his Kundalini Yoga teacher training, has just changed his name to his new spiritual name, Ravi Chander, and spends much of his time reading, studying, and developing expertise and personal experience in what he calls “humanology.”

This is the longest podcast I’ve ever recorded, and it’s a conversation I enjoyed thoroughly. We get into “weird” stuff right out of the gate, though Ronnie is about as un-weird as it gets. It opened my eyes to many new intriguing concepts such as optimizing performance without training, as well sound healing and sunlight.

Enjoy!

Throughout his career, Dr. Michael Gervais has followed a central question: Is there a common thread connecting those who change how we understand how the world works?

As a high-performance psychologist, published, peer-reviewed author and recognized speaker on optimal human performance, Michael Gervais works in the trenches of high-stakes environments, where there is no luxury for mistakes, hesitation, or failure to respond. While Dr. Gervais’ roster includes an MVP from every major sport, internationally acclaimed artists and musicians and Fortune 100 CEO’s, he is also the Co-Founder of Compete to Create, whose mission is to help people become the best they can be.

He recognizes that all of us are required to perform daily. We all navigate our own high-stakes environments and can benefit just as much with the right mindset training. Ultimately, Dr. Gervais’ goal is to unpack, then decode, how the greatest performers in the world use their minds to pursue the boundaries of human potential. To accelerate that aim, he has curated conversations with those who have dedicated their life toward Finding Mastery.

Applying that passion to explore human performance boundaries to his personal life, Dr. Gervais is an avid surfer who also enjoys skiing Canada’s backcountry.

He has come to understand that the answer to his central question lies in the space between hesitation and commitment.

From Andy:

I must say that this was one of the most fun and informative conversations I've had in recent memory - with anyone. Michael is as knowledgeable as he is personable, and his enthusiasm for the conversation about mastery is infectious. I learned a bunch of new things that have already opened up new wormholes of learning to dive into -- all that fascinates me.

Enjoy!

Kristen MacDermott is a consultant and performance coach who has created resilience training programs for some of the highest performing people on the planet, including Naval Special Warfare Command (Navy SEALs) and the Los Angeles Police Department. Kristin’s programs have also been used in more than 20 hospitals across the country, in the Duke Cancer Institute, and in the National Institutes of Health among others.

Kristin brings a unique skill set to her executive coaching, leadership training, and corporate consulting work. The resilience training curriculum she created has been validated in four studies with researchers from the Duke Clinical Research Institute, published in peer-reviewed journals and shown to promote clinically significant improvement in key wellness and resilience measures.

The cornerstone of Kristin’s resilience training curriculum is emotional intelligence, which is why her expertise lends itself so well to the corporate world. Study after study shows that “the single biggest predictor of professional success is not education, skill set, experience or IQ. It is emotional intelligence.” Kristin’s own research shows that emotional intelligence and resilience can be taught, and these skills improve performance and satisfaction with the workplace, which engenders loyalty to the organization.

From Andy:

One of the coolest parts of this interview for me was when we talked about how you can hear the same information from two different people – and one will trigger you into anger and upset while the other has no impact at all. In unraveling that, we got to the reason… that on some level, you believe that the person that triggered you is right – you believe them, and that causes you to judge yourself. So the upset is really about self-judgment… and THAT, you can do something about.

There’s that… and so much more in this conversation. Check it out – you’ll be glad you did!

Enjoy!

In November of 1999, at the age of 24 and having just led an unsupported cycling trek across the United States with nine teenagers, Sam was in a car accident caused by a drunk driver. In an instant, he went from being an avid outdoorsman, athlete and Zen enthusiast to being paralyzed from the waist down.

Determined to not become the victim of his circumstances, Sam spent years learning from some of the world’s top experts in the fields of somatic healing, meditation, breath work and mind training. Bedridden for the better part of four years and hospitalized for over two years, Sam’s will to survive was tested on multiple occasions. Throughout it all, he developed a deep fascination with the power of the mind and body to overcome seemingly unconquerable obstacles. Friends and acquaintances frequently remarked on his resilient nature and the quality of his attitude and mindset. Being forced to experience such consistently unfavorable circumstances, and rise above them, cultivated the foundation of what later became Zen Warrior Training.

Zen Warrior Training trains high-performers including CEO’s, spiritual leaders and professional actors to go beyond their perceived limitations and turn any challenge into an opportunity. Sam trains his clients to move beyond their own unconscious, self-limiting perceptions and into an embodied experience of their authentic power, creating more fulfilling relationships, generating more income, and optimizing health with far less pressure and stress.

From Andy:

Do you know when you meet someone for the first time and after a few minutes, you feel like you’ve known them for years? That’s what it was like for me with Sam. Wise beyond his years, having had to deal with life challenges I hope I never have to, Sam brought an emotional and honest depth to our conversation. I especially like the conversation we get into in the second half of the podcast – about existential mental agility, flow, freedom, and the path he uses to get there.

By the way, if you’re interested in working with Sam privately, he offers a complimentary strategy session. To find out how to take advantage of this, apply at Sam’s website – www.zenwarriortraining.com.

Enjoy this one. I sure did!

As you might have noticed, this is the third podcast I've done with the folks from Human Garage. The first two were with the founders, Garry and Anela Lineham. Their stories and experiences are vastly different, yet they came together to create this extraordinary place of learning and healing.

Today, I'm moving the conversation toward the "how" of it all — in other words, what's "under the hood" at the Human Garage. I'm doing this by talking to two of their Master Motion Mechanics: Alexander Rizk and Brian Donahue.

For complete show notes, please click here to visit our website.

Alexander Rizk is a retired professional soccer player. A career-ending injury left him debilitated and in chronic pain. After years of failed treatments, he decided to find his own solution. He attended school for medicine, therapy, nutrition, and human movement. Through these pursuits, he discovered a reliable path to treat his body naturally and, finally, he experienced a full recovery. Pain-free, he felt compelled to help others achieve better health and find happiness within.

As a massage therapist fresh out of college, Brian Donahoe was determined to build upon all aspects of the body’s rehabilitation processes. He sought additional training as a strength coach and Pilates instructor while also mastering full-body active release techniques and fascial treatment. But, it wasn’t until joining Human Garage that he returned to his energetic roots and organ-meridian studies, which spawned new treatment practices. Seeking and treating the source of misalignment is a deep vocational drive for Brian, and ensures that Human Garage will always work to find a better way to heal.

This is a conversation about the body, the brain, neurology, fascia, chakras, organs, breathing, efficiency, healing, and maintenance. We cover way too much in the conversation to try to describe it here — though, there are detailed show notes below.

Enjoy this one —I certainly did!

Anela Lineham is the co-founder, along with her husband Gary Lineham, of Human Garage. Anela is an Intuitive Women’s Health Expert. She is a motion/breathwork master, and an expert in women's health focusing on the biochemical, physical, emotional and spiritual aspects of a woman’s well-being.

Anela is also the co-owner Human Garage and has studied under Masters of NAAM, Kundalini & Vinyasa Yoga for over 30 years. Anela leads dedicated workshops on the importance of the mind/body balance and how your biochemistry, along with your mindset, plays an integral role in your mood and energy levels.

For complete show notes, please click here to visit our website.

As Anela's story unfolded, I was struck by her incredible ability to rise above. In spite of being smacked down by life time and again, she has always found a way to keep moving forward, learning, growing, and using the experiences, no matter how bad or destructive, as opportunities for growth. This is something that we all can use more of, and for some reason, hearing it from someone who's had it much worse than many others, feels comforting and inspiring, like if she can do it... then I can too.

I know you're going to love this conversation...enjoy!

Diana Rodgers, RD, LDN, NTP is a “real food” nutritionist living on a working organic farm near Boston, Massachusetts. The farm runs a vegetable and meat CSA. She is the author of two bestselling cookbooks and runs a clinical nutrition practice.

Diana writes and speaks about the intersection of optimal human nutrition, environmental sustainability, animal welfare and social justice. She also produces The Sustainable Dish Podcast. In her podcast, she interviews experts in the environmental and health movement. Her new film project, Kale vs. Cow, examines the environmental, nutritional, and ethical case for “better meat’.

There is so much I am just starting to learn about sustainable farming practices. The topic is hugely important, and I'm so grateful for people like Diana who are helping to tell the story in a way that most everyone can relate to and understand. She has the unique opportunity to be a practicing paleo nutritionist while living on a farm that sustains its self through its bio-diverse practices.

The story she tells is compelling and relatable - about her very real struggle with food, with the celiac disease that went undiagnosed for years, and her eventual solution through paleo nutrition that resulted in the healing of her gut, body, and life.

She is full of positive energy, great nutritional advice, and is a great resource for sustainable regenerative farming practices. Hope you enjoy this one as much as I did!

Garry Lineham, co-founder of Human Garage, is a lifelong bio-hacker who believes that the human body was designed to heal itself. He started Human Garage as a vehicle to give people the correct input to start that healing. Garry himself lived in chronic pain for over 20 years. During that time, he became increasingly frustrated with the countless treatment modalities that only addressed his symptoms. He realized the root of the problem wasn’t being solved and set out to do just that.

Human Garage is based on the principle that optimal health is achieved through complete alignment— restoring the natural functions of the body to enjoy pain-free, full-range of motion. Garry is proud of the fact that medical doctors and therapists from around the world are now coming to Venice, California to learn the Human Garage way of repairing and re-balancing the human body.

For complete show notes, please click here to visit our website.

I've undergone many different treatment protocols over the years... but nothing like what I went through at the Human Garage. From having four therapists working on me at once (8 hands touching my body at one time), undergoing treatment while standing up, to regular posture, gait, and facial structure analysis, they don't focus on what is directly causing pain, instead, they treat the entire body holistically.

Garry is the leader and chief ringleader, but it's a program that wouldn't exist without the talented therapists he's assembled to work with him on his team. The podcast conversation reveals the what, why, and how of the program - it's a fascinating program, journey, and a conversation not to be missed.

Dr. Martin Gibala is a professor and chair of the Department of Kinesiology at McMaster University in Hamilton, Canada. Martin studies the integrative physiology of exercise from the molecular up to whole body level, including the impact of training and nutrition on human health and performance.

Gibala’s research on the physiological adaptations to interval training has attracted immense scientific attention and worldwide media coverage. He has published more than 100 peer-reviewed articles, the results of which have been featured by outlets including The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, TIME, Vox, CNN, NBC Nightly News, and Conan. He is the author of a bestselling book, The One-Minute Workout: Science Shows a Way to Get Fit That’s Smarter, Faster, Shorter.

For complete show notes, please click here to visit our website.

This was a fascinating podcast conversation for me. I geek out on this stuff, because I've been doing different versions of interval training for decades. It was fantastic to talk to someone who spends his life studying the effectiveness of interval training, to get his specific perspective and recommendations (of which this interval is full of!) Martin is incredibly personable, sharing stories from his life and lab, and puts things into very easy to understand perspective about training effectiveness. It also had the bonus effect for me of motivating me to get out and do some intervals on days when I only have 15-20 minutes.

Check out the convo - I know you'll be glad that you did!

When Maryann Berry was in her 20’s she suffered from chronic knee, hip and back pain. She ended up in a wheelchair, unable to walk due to excruciating hip pain. She had multiple surgeries and tried every medical treatment under the sun including injections, prescription drugs, chiropractic adjustments, and physical therapy. She was left broke, still in pain, and with seemingly no prospects for healing.

Then she was introduced to Posture Alignment Therapy, a revolutionary exercise technique that treats the underlying cause of pain by correcting posture alignment. Maryann began following the program every single day.

Over the course of roughly three years, putting in lots of work every day, Maryann went from being unable to walk to enjoying full range of motion and function of her hip, as well as eliminating her back and knee pain. Today, Maryann’s hip, back, and knee are fully recovered and 100% pain free. She feels like she got her life back.

It takes us a bit to get to the real heart of Ryan's work as we spend the first part of the conversation getting to know a bit more about who he is and why we should pay attention. His new book is about how we're all getting wagged by our tails. In a nutshell, when you rely predominantly on your feelings to make important regular decisions, you're using your limbic brain, which is designed to make quick decisions and protect you from danger. It doesn't take into consideration your truer, deeper values, what you stand for, and who you truly are. Therefore, the actions it has you take based on its interpretation of the situation don't necessarily represent your best interest or your best self. It's an important distinction and the conversation we have about it is fascinating.

Dr. Jason Fung is a Canadian nephrologist and a world-leading expert on intermittent fasting and LCHF (low carb, high fat), especially for treating people with, or at risk for, type 2 diabetes. Dr. Jason Fung earned his medical degree and did his residency at the University of Toronto before heading to UCLA for his fellowship in nephrology. In addition to his practice as a kidney specialist, Dr. Fung is currently the scientific editor of the Journal of Insulin Resistance.

After treating thousands of patients, it became clear to Dr. Fung that we are losing the battle against the epidemic of type 2 diabetes and obesity. The traditional dietary recommendations - to reduce dietary fat and calories - were clearly ineffective, so he founded the Intensive Dietary Management Program (IDM Program) to provide a unique treatment focus for type 2 diabetes and obesity. Dr. Fung believes that, rather than focusing on medications, the focus needs to be on simple, effective dietary changes.

In Dr. Fung’s first book, The Obesity Code, he explores the underlying causes of obesity and recommends effective strategies that target the root causes of weight gain. His second book, The Complete Guide to Fasting, is a practical guide to fasting, including fasting regimens, what to expect, and how to deal with problems.

For complete show notes, please click here to visit our website. Without any plan to have Dr. Fung on the podcast, I got a copy of his book. After getting half-way in, I was so compelled by his research, expertise, and recommendations, I reached out to invite him to be a guest on the podcast. He's a traditional doctor with a non-traditional message - give your body a break from insulin by getting off the carbs and not eating so frequently. It's a message many, many more of us need to hear.

Take out your pen and piece of paper, take notes, and share his message with others. Then give it a whirl to see if and how it works for you. I'll bet in looking back on it that you'll be thankful you did!

“My mission is to empower people to take control of their own health, well-being and fitness using simple breathing exercises proven to improve body oxygenation”. -Patrick McKeown

Breathing. It's fundamental to human life, and we've been breathing air since moments after birth. It's so instinctual, we do it correctly right from the start - diaphragmatic breathing with the mouth closed. Like so many other aspects of life, though, many of us stray from this original, natural, and healthy behavior. According to Patrick McKeown, the derangement of our breathing process is at the root of many of the ills and ailments that are common today.

Patrick McKeown is the author of seven books and the Director of Education and Training at the Buteyko Clinic International. The Buteyko method is a breathing technique used to help children and adults suffering from breathing problems including asthma, COPD, snoring, and sleep apnea as well as helping athletes improve performance.

Click here for complete show notes*, resources, and links from this episode.*

Listen - if there is one thing that you consider addressing this year in your physical performance, I suggest it be breathing. It's the most fundamental element of life - you can survive less than 5 minutes without taking a breath, and it may just be the most transforming in your health and well-being. Patrick has been teaching these breathing techniques to thousands of people over the past couple decades. Many have seen absolutely remarkable transformations - eliminating asthma, snoring, sleep apnea, improving the health of gums and teeth, changing jaw structure, reducing stress, improving performance.

While I'll admit that Patrick's coaching to "breathe less" sounds absolutely crazy, after you hear the reasons why... and that your body actually does a better job at delivering oxygen to your tissues, you'll find yourself itching to learn more (as I did). I suggest sitting down with a pen and piece of paper to jot down notes, and to pick up a copy of his book as well.

Enjoy!

Ok... listen people. This might just be the most important conversation in a podcast that I have this entire year - and one of the most important podcasts you listen to as well. Chris and I address the MASSIVE health care problem we're facing with the progression of chronic disease. It's a problem that could bankrupt our country within the next 35-40 years. Yes, it's that big. Yes, it's that serious. But don't worry, we talk about some really awesome, progressive potential solutions too.

Later in the conversation, Chris gives us a peek inside of his personal life, giving us a chance to learn from some of the strategies he's adopted to keep his life happy, healthy, productive and balanced.

Hope you get as much out of this conversation as I did!

This is a particularly personal interview for me. Not the subject matter, but the broader context - the fact that the editor of Outside Magazine is on my podcast! You see, Outside Magazine has been my magazine "bible" since the early 1990's. It was THE place I turned for articles, inspiration, gear, adventure, and innovations. It was where I turned time and again for figuring out what to buy, where to go, and what sponsors to go after when looking for new gear for adventure racing.

So when I found out that Outside Magazine, and in particular, the editor, Chris Keyes had contacted the Whole Life Challenge about participating in our event, I was floored.

But wait, it got even cooler.

Chris wanted ME (and Michael) to be on the Outside Magazine Podcast, and wanted us to come out to Santa Fe, NM to record it. So that's exactly what we did... and while there, I got Chris to hang out for a couple hours on Sunday to record this one.

So... what do you talk about with the editor of a major magazine? Writing, journaling, apps, reading, how an article goes from birth to finished form, and of course, outdoor sports!

Hope you enjoy this as much as I did!

What if you could align healthy eating with the health and well-being of of animals and livestock, while simultaneously improving the health our planet's grasslands? According to Bobby Gill, that is not only possible, but is currently in process. Livestock provides much, much more to us than meat, and the way that livestock is raised can either degrade or improve the land.

Bobby Gill is on a mission. A mission to improve our planet and help its inhabitants eat and live better than ever. Bobby is the Director of Corporate Development for the non-profit Savory Institute. An accomplished Biological Resources Engineer with a long and successful track record in non-profit development, fundraising, and community building, Bobby Gill takes this mission personally.

For seven years, Bobby worked as a lead scientific reviewer for the US Food & Drug Administration. While designing clinical trials to evaluate the safety and efficacy of cardiovascular devices, he developed a strong appreciation for analyzing scientific research and understanding the underlying mechanisms of biological systems. This ultimately led him to studying ancestral nutrition and regenerative agricultural systems, challenging the status quo and seeing how working with nature instead of against it optimizes life for all involved.

It was a Ted Talk by Allan Savory that changed the course of his life. After seeing it, he was so inspired, he found his way to Colorado and sought out a position with the team at the Savory Institute.

We've all been to the doctor before. The typical advice that follows a cursory exam is basically, "do this for the symptoms," with little in the way of addressing the underlying issue. High cholesterol, for example, is a symptom, not an underlying issue — bringing down cholesterol is not the same as treating the underlying problem, if there even is one. Among the highly-educated is a tendency to believe that the answers are known. Dr. Anthony Gustin believes that this may not be the case, and the more he studies the less sure he is of any "knowns."

As a child, Dr. Gustin thought it was normal to be sick often, overweight, ridden with acne, have constant joint pains, and be generally unhealthy. When he realized that he was in control of all that through diet and exercise, his life changed forever. Through many years of study and self-experimentation, Dr. Gustin developed a foundational support system for health and wellness. His longstanding pains went away, his mental performance skyrocketed, and his overall body composition finally improved dramatically.

Having built and sold a chain of sports medicine clinics, Dr. Gustin's time is now spent on the day-to-day operations of EquipFoods.com (formerly pureWOD), his whole-food based supplement company, Perfect Keto. (Use that affiliate link and the coupon code WHOLELIFECHALLENGE for 15% off your order.)

In the interest of raising the bar for therapeutic care, Anthony also helps other clinicians, therapists and trainers scale up and help more people through Health Fit Business and helps patients find clinicians through his platform Movement Providers.

Through all those channels, Anthony now focuses on educating as many people as possible about the four pillars of health: Nutrition, Movement, Stress/Mental Health, and Sleep/Rest. Only with all of these operating in your favor can your health and quality of life be optimal. Join us for an insightful conversation with a humble truth seeker, Dr. Anthony Gustin.

You know the numbers — you can go without food for three weeks, without water for three days, and without oxygen for just three minutes. With such a clear and constant need for oxygen, it is surprising that the oxygen debt many of us live with every day isn't addressed more in fitness culture.

This episode is a conversation with Tom Butler, vice president at LiveO2 Adaptive Contrast Oxygen Therapy. Tom earned his bachelor's degree in environmental science at Virginia Polytechnic and his master of science in Oriental medicine at Southwest Acupuncture College in Boulder, Colorado. The positive effects he experienced from his very first exercise with oxygen therapy (EWOT) session convinced him this was something he needed to tell people about.

An incredible ability to recover from workouts, the jump in his energy level, and a 30% improvement in his VO2 max all made Tom a believer. If you are curious about the effects of chronic oxygen deprivation on your tissues, performance, energy level, and chronic inflammation and disease risk, be sure to tune in to this episode of the WLC podcast.

It’s easy to find someone willing to tell you “everything you need to know” to achieve your top athletic condition and performance these days. The internet has given anyone with an opinion a massive platform to launch their ideas from. But when one of the most learned experts in the field says that science may not even have the answers you need, where do you turn?

Andy Galpin is a self-described mediocre athlete. This, he believes, is why he felt compelled to as much as possible about training for maximum performance. If what you’re gifted with physically doesn’t stack up, you have to make up for it somehow to stay competitive at the college level.

The first member of his family to attend 4-year college, Andy earned a bachelor’s degree in exercise science, then a master’s degree in human movement sciences, and then a Ph.D. in human bioenergetics. Today, Dr. Galpin is a tenured professor and the director of the Center for Sport Performance at CSU Fullerton. He continues to research and publish and makes his lectures and information free and available to all online at AndyGalpin.com.

“For people who live in the world and other people depend on, the goal of meditation is adaptation. It’s so that you thrive in your daily life.”

“In a sense, in meditation, you are learning to hold your own self. Like, your soul, your scared human person, your aching heart, your exhausted body, your dreams, your love of the world. You’re learning to hold all that, with great tenderness, so that all the parts of you can come together and form an alliance, an internal team, because they all want to work together.”

Did you realize that every time your breath cycles, you’ve experienced a tiny meditation? Inhaling, building tension, then exhaling and relaxing—this is the same pattern that occurs when one meditates, and meditation is as natural to the human body and mind as breathing.

2008 Olympic Silver Medal Gymnast, Sam Peszek, summed up the simple choice presented to her over and again during the first 15 years of her life:

I can either eat the cookie and not go to the Olympics or leave it be and go to the Olympics.

This week’s guest on the WLC podcast is a little different than most of our recent guests. Samantha Peszek (pronounced Pesh-eck) doesn’t have a book or a website or a pre-made plan for how you can overcome the roadblocks you face. She has something else: the unwavering will to achieve a goal, no matter how bodacious.

Samantha began her gymnastics training at age two, and played soccer and studied dance as a child as well. Gymnastics, though, won out, and by age twelve, after ten years of consistent, hard work, she became the youngest member of the US National Gymnastics Team. Although she and her teammates won many gymnastics competitions and championships, it was her 2008 Silver Medal Olympic performance that she is most proud of.

When we hear the term personal branding, most of us think of social media “stars” who are trying to market a product with their personalities, but a personal brand is both more pedestrian, and more important than that. In fact, we should all have a personal brand, if you ask Richard Janes.

Richard describes himself as “a personal brand expert with a passion for storytelling.” He has worked with actors, athletes, musicians, television hosts, executives, and entrepreneurs, helping them connect with their authentic selves and, as a result, connect with and strongly influence others.

Richard founded and still provides strategic oversight to Fanology, the Hollywood-based social media and digital studio. He also sits on a number of startup boards, and continues to share his love of storytelling through various writing, directing, & acting projects.

[Note: For the complete set of show notes, links, and contact info, head to https://www.wholelifechallenge.com/podcast]

Your Personal Brand Is Who You Are The key to a successful personal brand, Richard says, is that it must come from an authentic place and must show in every aspect of your life. To that end, he teaches how to identify your unique life’s purpose. It took a life-threatening illness to show Richard Janes how to be authentic and true to his purpose, but he insists that it doesn’t need to get that bad. You can start on this path any time you decide to.

Wouldn’t you like to find out who you are at your very best, and how powerful that person can be to create change? Wouldn’t you love to live an authentic, purposeful, and fulfilling life? Who wouldn’t want that! I hope you enjoy this fantastic episode of the Whole Life Challenge Podcast with guest Richard Janes.

I’m living in kitchen remodeling hell this week. Perhaps you’ve been through something similar? The struggle is real. Or, it was until I realized that my experience of the situation was a choice I had made. Get the details in the intro to the podcast.

My guest this week is Ryan Parsons, co-author (with UFC star Chael Sonnen) of The Four-Pack Revolution: How You Can Aim Lower, Cheat on Your Diet, and Still Lose Weight and Keep It Off, He is also an accomplished chiropractor, mixed martial arts coach and promoter, and a former competitive gymnast.

How has he been able to accomplish all that? Through his realization that we have much more control over our lives than we might think. That control is a double-edged sword, though, because we are just as responsible for our failures as our successes. In the podcast, Ryan describes exactly how he self-patterns to prepare for success.

“There is this misconception that we have that we can kick the can down the road in anything in our life that we’re not happy with. We can just wait ‘til tomorrow...these tomorrows may never come.”

-Eric Remensperger

We each have moments in our lives that forever shift our trajectory. Sometimes they are clearly positive - graduating from college or meeting our future spouse, for example. Other times, the positive side is hard to see, such as being diagnosed with a life-threatening condition.

For Eric Remensperger, stage four prostate cancer was both life-shattering and an undeniable call to purpose, a call which he now devotes himself to answering.

[Note: For the complete set of show notes, links, and contact info, head to https://www.wholelifechallenge.com/podcast]

Once a hard-drinking, hard-living New York City attorney, Eric knew that he couldn’t maintain that lifestyle and expect to live a long, healthy life. He started down the wellness road in the 90’s, making big changes in long-term habits to improve his well-being. He quit smoking entirely, moved to Los Angeles, began seeking out alternative medicine healers, acupuncturists, functional doctors who focused on wellness (rather than sickness). By 2010, his life looked radically different - he had become a person obviously committed to his own health and well-being.

Imagine his surprise when in 2016, after twenty years of “clean living”, he found himself in a doctor’s office getting the news that his body was riddled with cancer. Through a treatment program of his own design and implementation, with diet as a key component and without the use of radiation or chemo, Eric’s cancer is now in remission.

Dr. Lane Sebring is founder and director of the Sebring Clinic in Wimberley Texas. His practice focuses on healing people who are at the end of the line, have no hope, don’t know where to turn, and have exhausted all other options. The root of his philosophy - a no-sugar, paleolithic approach.

People come to see Dr. Sebring because they are desperate for help.

This is, in part, why they heal. They listen (since nothing else has worked, why not?). They do what they’re told (remember, they’re desperate). They trust him (he is, after all, an MD - albeit unconventional).

He is no-nonsense. If you don’t want to get better and want to just keep taking your meds, don’t bother making an appointment.

And guess what? Most of his patients get better. Often miraculously.

His practice focuses on treating the underlying causes of dis-ease rather than the symptoms. Patients reverse many conditions and diseases that they thought to be untreatable. He is the hammer, the “shove in the right direction,” insistent that the answer they’re so desperate for lies squarely in their own hands - food.

Experience has taught Dr. Sebring that people’s best chance for healing comes from one thing - taking personal responsibility for the food that they eat. Period.

Dr. Sebring got started down this path in the late 90’s when he was fortunate enough to attend a lecture by Dr. Loren Cordain (the founder of the Paleo Movement). He was able to see the immense value in Dr. Cordain’s new research on the link between nutrition and health. Soon after, Dr. Sebring’s medical practice became paleo-diet based, getting patients off medications and down the path to real, sustainable health.

Join Andy and Dr. Sebring as they talk about the importance of keeping an open mind in medicine, the negative effects of statins and other over-prescribed drugs, how to take advantage of ketosis (without losing your mind or alienating everyone around you), why sugar isn’t your body’s favorite fuel after all, and even how Dr. Sebring himself plans out his diet.

What if your urge to eat was just as understandable as your urge to save yourself from drowning? How would that affect your feelings of guilt, your self-talk, and the way you think about your relationship to food?

The processed food industry develops hundreds, if not thousands, of new, ever-more-palatable concoctions every year. Each one is designed to play on your urge to survive in order to make you want more and more.

Robb Wolf, renowned paleo diet researcher and proponent, has written a new book called Wired to Eat that addresses the unfortunate ease with which we can be preyed upon to consume more and more hyperpalatable foods.

The good news? It is not your fault. The bad news? Knowing and acting on information are two different things. That is why Robb wrote the book - to outline his method for helping you customize your diet based on the unique and individual responses your body has to the foods that you eat. By going through this process, you’ll learn to make smarter food choices in just about every situation.

Greg Glassman, the founder of the global fitness company and community movement, CrossFit, Inc., is a true visionary. Not afraid to speak his mind or upset people if that’s what it takes to deliver his message, Glassman is on a quest to end the involvement of “Big Soda” in the health sciences.

[Note: For the complete set of show notes, links, and contact info, head to https://www.wholelifechallenge.com/podcast]

Wait, back up. Did you even know that PepsiCo and Coca-Cola, Inc. were involved in the world of health sciences? Oh yes — they are. And how are they involved?

Pepsi and Coke both provide money to run health programs, initiatives and studies. And because of that, they get to assert their power, creating their own health science target agenda based on corporate fiscal goals, initiatives that get created, what gets studied, who gets hired to conduct studies, which of the studies continue to get funding, and perhaps even which study results get shared and which don’t.

When the world is suffering from an obesity crisis caused, in large part, by sugar consumption, doesn’t that seem a little bit strange that the companies who have built their empires on the liquid delivery of sugar are part of the conversation about health? To me, it’s like putting the fox in charge of the hen house — similar to allowing an oil company to influence environmental policy.

As it turns out, their ability to continue to effectively sell soda (or other forms of sugar or sweetener-infused drinks) in the face of our ever-worsening chronic disease epidemic has a lot to do with the conversation and policies set forth in Washington, D.C.

How does a company whose primary product thrives on the addictive qualities of sugar legitimize being included in the conversation about health? Simple — change the conversation from one about diet and nutrition to one solely about exercise.

That’s what Coca-Cola did. They created a program called Exercise Is Medicine. The program’s focus is 100% on exercise, zero on diet. But the reality is, if you’re eating (or drinking) the wrong things, all the exercise in the world isn’t going to help, so leaving nutrition out of the conversation about chronic disease and diabetes is laughable.

This is the corporate meddling that Coach Glassman is fighting so hard to eliminate. I hope you enjoy this conversation as much as I did!

Here are the highlights:

  • CrossFit’s unique and simple definition of world class fitness in 100 words.
  • How Glassman got pulled into his fight with Big Soda.
  • How pre-hydration and drinking beyond your thirst are not effective hydration strategies.
  • The current major players in the world of chronic disease
  • If you had to choose one, eating right or exercising, which should it be?
  • What is Glassman’s end game? What is the result he’s looking for?
  • The chronic disease that is the linchpin in reversing current trends.
  • The metrics you should use for determining your body’s health and well-being.
  • How to outlaw a methodology.
  • Glassman’s new job and mission at CrossFit, Inc. (no longer CEO)
  • How if you really want to make a difference, sometimes you have to ruffle some feathers.
  • Is it possible that cancer is, in fact, a metabolic disease?

Mark England, the founder of Procabulary, has been on a life-long quest of self-improvement. Through a series of adventures (some intentional, others completely unplanned), he found his way to the world of language.

[For the complete set of show notes, links, and contact info, head to https://www.wholelifechallenge.com/podcast]

There, he discovered the impact of the words we use on our actions and behavior. He found that language can influence behavior, and changing our language is the first step in changing our lives.

After experiencing the incredible power of this language change for himself, he started teaching others. Thousands of hours later, he’s developed a self-paced online course called the Core Language Upgrade.

You’ll find out a lot about the system, its development, and how to implement some of it into your life right now by listening to the podcast. If you’re interested in taking the course, he makes an incredibly generous offer for WLC podcast listeners near the end of the conversation (but you’ll have to listen to find out what it is and how to make use of it).

Whether you’re interested in the course or not, you’ll be interested in what Mark and I discussed. All of it can have a major impact on your experience of daily life:

  • Gaining awareness of your facial expressions so that they match how you’re feeling on the inside.
  • How language influences (and creates) your own opinion of yourself, your identity.
  • How you create who you are with the words you choose.
  • How one of Mark’s greatest life failures led him toward the opportunity of his life.
  • How changing the words you use in conversation can literally change your life.
  • How Mark developed the Procabulary training program.
  • The secret and effective way to instantly decrease your stress about any situation.
  • How prolonged bouts of indecision create tremendous amounts of stress, and how to change it by taking out specific key words in your self-talk.
  • How to identify your soft-talk key words in order to change your behavior.

Robbie Ventura is a former American professional cyclist who rode most notably for United States Postal Service Cycling Team from 2001-2004. A pro for over 11 years, he got his start in bicycle racing near his home by developing his skill, strength, and speed while riding, racing and supporting teammates in velodrome racing (an oval, banked, indoor cycling track). A successful competitive athlete his entire life (he also played collegiate hockey), he found quickly after retiring from cycling that he had more to contribute to the world by way of coaching. He turned his sights toward the business he started in Chicago, Vision Quest Coaching, and never looked back.

Thirteen years and thousands of clients later, he’s one of the go-to people in the world for developing athletic skills as a cyclist. Whether you’re working with him personally (all VQ clients start with a thorough 3-hour assessment with Robbie), or working with one of his coaches in person or online, he’s developed a training methodology and system based on his years as a competitive athlete and top professional cyclist.

Anyone who has risen to the top of a competitive sport who has then transitioned, like Robbie has, to the world of coaching, has a ton of experience and advice to offer, whether you’re a participant in his sport or not. Robbie’s personal experience and years as a coach give him an incredibly valuable and unique perspective - there is a ton to learn from him that he shares during our conversation.

Highlights:

  • How to test your fitness, passion, commitment, mental focus and strength through racing and competition.
  • How to win without necessarily winning (or how the cost of winning (in sport or life) can be detrimental to your long-term health and goals.)
  • How to develop your skill set for a sport.
  • How the important part of the journey is in the struggle, not the result.
  • How to determine the perfect training volume for your own development.
  • Why single sport athletes (runners, cyclists, triathletes, swimmers, etc) need training outside of their sport for well-rounded functional capacity and life.
  • Robbie’s secret to keeping yourself motivated and on-track.
  • How to set yourself up for a great night’s sleep - the key elements for perfect sleep and recovery.
  • How to set up your own testing protocol (in swimming, cycling, or running) for continued growth and performance.
  • Why “paying attention” to when you feel great is the key to your own personal performance.

You may remember Jack Osbourne from the hit TV show The Osbournes. He’s the son of the heavy metal singer Ozzie Osbourne and is a regular member at CrossFit Los Angeles.

Jack has a thriving business producing travel and history shows alongside his dad (who’s a closet history buff). He’s also a husband and a father to two daughters.

But the reason I wanted to have him as a guest on the show was to talk about his experience with addiction and getting sober as a teenager, as well as his diagnosis with multiple sclerosis (MS).

Before the age of eighteen, Jack had become addicted to painkillers, recognized it, and then willingly went to rehab, kicking it without relapse — he’s now fourteen years sober and counting.

Not long after kicking painkillers, he got the sort of news that any human being who’s been to the doctor with strange symptoms dreads. He learned he has MS.

Jack didn’t tuck his tail under and run. Quite the opposite. He’s lives his life openly and honestly, sharing his trials and tribulations with the world in an effort to shed more light on this disease and to help others in need live with it.

Join me for this great conversation with Jack. Here are some of the things we speak about:

  • The unexpected twists and turns of life as a teenager - and how he pulled through
  • The adventure of a lifetime, climbing El Capitan - a 3,000 ft. sheer granite wall in Yosemite, CA
  • How choosing adventures or events that inspire you can pull you toward your goals
  • Getting “this chick” pregnant and getting married
  • His first symptoms of MS - “de-nial” is not just a river in Africa
  • His belief that, “Where you are at 30 is where you are with the rest of your life,” and how that helped him
  • Commitment to 3 days/week of training - start of changing life
  • Getting his “life straight” through the Whole Life Challenge
  • Catching Leptospirosis in the jungles of Borneo
  • The process of detoxing to cleanse his body
  • Process goals vs. outcome goals
  • The importance of community in fitness and training
  • Andy’s discovery of CrossFit - the early days

You may have seen this week’s guest on a random Saturday afternoon while watching the Olympics or an extreme sports show with guys hucking themselves off of 100-foot cliffs on mountain bikes. Sal Masekela has been hosting shows like this for NBC and Red Bull for many years, and is currently the persona of the Red Bull Signature Series. But I know Sal through his participation with our fitness community at CrossFit Los Angeles, of which he was a member for over 5 years, and subsequently, his journey as a four-time veteran of the Whole Life Challenge.

Sal leads a pretty incredible life, traveling to all parts of the earth with some of the world’s greatest extreme athletes (surf, skate, snowboard, ski, dirt bike, mountain bike, etc.) in order to bring their exploits and amazing performances alive for the rest of us via TV. He also gets a chance to hang out with these guys outside of competition. During the podcast, he shares both stories and profound learnings from the likes of Laird Hamilton, Gabby Reece, and Kelly Slater (who he hangs with regularly).

Though his life is glamorous, he struggles just like the rest of us with his personal health and fitness, challenged by the uniqueness of his schedule, lifestyle and habits. He’s incredibly open about his life and shares with us many of his personal daily habits and how he makes sure to get them in each day.

Join me for a conversation about the journey and joy of life, and some profound learnings from the life and experiences of Sal Masekela.

What if I were to tell you that one of the 3 fittest women on the planet was (at the time she earned that title) 35 years old, a mother, wife, and school teacher who limits her training to 90 minutes per day? Would you believe me? If not, you’d be sorely mistaken.

In 2013, Val Voboril took 3rd at the CrossFit Games. It was the second time she placed 3rd, it would be one of four times that she’s finished in the top 5, and at the time, she was 10 years older than most of her competitors. If you met Val on the street, you be taken by her bright eyes, incredible smile, sunny disposition, but not at all by her physical prowess - she appears normal as normal can be.

Ordinarily, relating to an athlete like this is next to impossible. Their lives are simply too dissimilar to the ones that the rest of us lead. But not at all so for Val - she’s got her priorities and a life that is very much like yours and mine. First and foremost, she’s a mom and a wife, responsibilities she takes very seriously. And believe me, she knows the importance - she’s been an elementary school teacher for over 14 years. These take priority over all else, and are why she puts such strict limits on her daily training volume in her preparation for competition (90 minutes in the world of elite CrossFitters tiny in comparison to others.

In order to keep all these things in balance, Val’s had to adopt a training philosophy and strategy that allows her to do it all. It’s one of the freshest and coolest strategies I know. And since she’s 38, a mom, wife and full time teacher, she knows what it’s like to juggle life’s responsibilities with her daily training discipline.

There is so much to learn from Val’s experience, attitude, daily practice, and how she keeps it all together. Enjoy!

Teacher, speaker, and psychotherapist, Megan Devine, has been stirring up our culture’s ideas around grief and loss since 2009. That’s the year she started down the path of personal wisdom and expertise because in that year, on a beautiful sunny day, she witnessed the accidental drowning of her beloved partner Matt. At that moment, all of her professional experience as a therapist became meaningless. What she found in processing her own grief, was that grief literature is loaded with well-intended advice that can actually worsen and extend someone’s pain. “We just don’t know how to handle loss in our culture.”

Since then, Megan has dedicated herself to helping people find a new way to deal with loss that honors their experience without trying to “solve” grief. Much of her work involves processing through writing and journaling, our lifestyle practice in the Whole Life Challenge this week, which is why I originally invited her onto the podcast

She's the author of the book, It's OK That You're Not OK: Meeting Grief and Loss in a Culture That Doesn't Understand, and is known for her practical, no-nonsense approach to grief, and for her ability to guide people inside some of the most devastating experiences of life and love. She’s an outspoken advocate of emotional intelligence, and the skills needed to love each other better – no matter what life brings.

I know this isn’t an easy topic, but it’s one that holds so much value for us in that we’ve all, in some way shape or form dealt with, or will have to deal with the loss of someone or something we love.

There is so much value in Megan’s work, I don’t know where to begin. Can’t recommend this one enough. Here are some of the topics from our conversation:

  • Grief - an access point to our authentic self
  • The uncomfortableness of being around someone else who’s grieving, and how to do it
  • Using writing to access your authentic thoughts and feelings
  • Journaling and writing as a place to tell the truth - because for all of us, the truth needs to be spoken, (though maybe not out loud.)
  • The benefit of not labeling yourself “a writer”, or expecting yourself to be good at it
  • The use of a timer and a specific, pre-defined length of time to assist your efforts
  • Writing prompts that work to access your right brain and creative mind.
  • How to get through your resistance to writing.
  • Grief is not a blessing, but it delivers a path straight to your heart and can be beautiful.
  • Gratitude as a companion to grief, not as a replacement.
  • Managing your own sense of helplessness when around others in pain.
  • If you really want to be of service to someone in pain, show up and be uncomfortable.
  • Journaling each day for checking in with yourself.

I’ve often wondered how a song becomes a song. The process seems mysterious and, frankly, impossible for a “normal” person like myself. What comes first — the title, tune, chords, or words? How do you put them together? How do you write the lyrics? And what about the structure? It’s all overwhelming to me and completely outside my comfort zone.

And then I read Peter Himmelman’s book, Let Me Out: Unlock Your Creative Mind and Bring Your Ideas to Life. Peter is my guest this week on the podcast, and my intention in having him on was to talk about creativity, since he’s mastered it in his life and has written a book full of exercises to help others learn to foster it in theirs.

The final exercise in Peter’s book is a simplified step-by-step guide for writing a song. According to the book, the process takes less than fifteen minutes. I’m going to let you in on a little secret now: I hardly ever do exercise like this in a book, but this time I felt compelled to give it a shot. Why?

I’ve always had a secret desire to write a song.

I’ve been playing the guitar for about ten years. I’ve achieved a certain level of facility in strumming and playing chords that I’m comfortable with. But one area I’ve always had a secret desire to pursue is songwriting.

When I was putting together this episode, it suddenly occurred to me that I could record a song and share it with you. And in spite of my trepidation, fear, and self-judgment, I decided there really couldn’t be a better way to demonstrate the effect of putting action together with creativity, fun, and a healthy dose of fear.

At the time of my conversation with Peter, I hadn’t yet read his book. Between then and now, I did — and as a result, I wrote a song.

Yes, I wrote a song.

In about fifteen minutes, I had in my hands twelve lines of lyrics that constituted the first three verses of my first and very own song. Since then, I added a verse and wrote a chorus.

So not only is this podcast a conversation with Peter, it’s also the world premier broadcast of my first and only song, Riding My One-Wheeled Bike! You can listen to it at the end of the podcast — at 1:22:00.

This podcast with Peter Himmelman, my friend, songwriting muse and teacher, singer, songwriter, composer, painter, and author of Let Me Out, is a conversation about creativity, gratitude, and living a happy and meaningful life. Whether or not you consider yourself an “artist,” there is something in this podcast for you:

  • A daily happiness hack to boost your mood and increase productivity
  • Focusing on what you have rather than what you need
  • Using a timer for brainstorming
  • Starting the process of writing a book with the title
  • The three categories of action-taking — every action fits into one of these
  • The difference intentionality makes in taking action
  • Intentionality in the conception of a child
  • Sharing the results of your creative actions with others
  • What comes first — the lyrics or the music?
  • Songs are to an album as chapters are to a book
  • Finding the joy and beauty and sharing with the world
  • Building your personal board of directors

Dr. Steve Orma is a clinical psychologist and happiness expert specializing in the treatment of insomnia, anxiety, and stress. If you’ve ever had a hard time falling asleep, or getting back to sleep after waking up, you’ve had first-hand experience with the way anxiety (or your worry about things in the future) can sabotage your efforts. That is why I thought Dr. Orma would make a perfect guest for this week’s Whole Life Podcast on sleep and the establishment of a bedtime ritual.

Dr. Orma has extensive clinical experience helping individuals of all backgrounds from PTSD war vets to students, moms, young professionals, entrepreneurs, and more. He personally suffered from (and overcame) insomnia, making him first-hand aware of how sleep can negatively impact your energy, health, and well-being. As a result of that experience, he wrote a book on the topic, “Stop Worrying and Go to Sleep: How to Put Insomnia to Bed for Good”. He is also widely quoted in the national media for his mental health expertise including ABC News, MSNBC, Wall Street Journal, Fast Company, Women’s Health, Shape, Men’s Journal, and more.

Topics discussed during the podcast:

  • The psychology behind bedtime rituals
  • Specific ideas for bedtime rituals to assist in falling asleep
  • Why you shouldn’t keep your todo list right next to your bed
  • What to do when you’re in bed and can’t fall asleep or can’t get back to sleep
  • Why you shouldn’t have a television in your bedroom
  • Anxiety and insomnia - expecting the worst and worrying about it doesn’t help
  • Using exposure and flooding (techniques) for addressing the core beliefs that are causing your anxiety.
  • Taking action - how it increases confidence and lowers anxiety.

I asked Traver Boehm back as a guest on the podcast this week specifically to talk about the impact he’s felt from disconnecting from electronic media over the course of the past year. He’s had personal experience - taking multiple month-long breaks from any sort of online interaction as well as recurring short breaks over the course of his daily routine.

This have been part of his Year To Live Project - something he started at the beginning of 2016 in an attempt to answer the question for himself, “What would you do if you knew you only had a year to live?”

One of the things he took on was a month in the wilderness with only a knife and compass (and the clothes on his back). It was particularly gnarly. He describes it as 28-days of shivering, dealing with extreme hunger, cold, and sleep deprivation. Fascinating as well was how he had to deal with the “not-knowingness” of what would happen tomorrow - or, as he called it, breaking his addiction to future knowledge.

Later in the year, he studied at the Esalen Institute, working on his spiritual practice while cleaning toilets (that paid his room and board). The rule there at meal times - no electronics, enforced by a complete shut-off of the wi-fi system (and there’s no cell service option either).

If you missed his first appearance as a guest on the show, it’s an episode not to be missed. Check it out here.

Here are some of the highlights of the podcast:

  • How speaking at TEDx is like an MMA fight
  • Learning how to survive for 28 days in the wilderness with nothing but a knife, water, first aid kit, a compass, the clothes on his back, and a five-foot-square sheet
  • Dealing with extreme hunger and cold
  • 28 days of shivering and sleep deprivation
  • Gratitude in the face of misery — and how things could always be worse
  • Surrendering to life the way it is without giving up
  • Taking personal responsibility
  • Breaking the addiction to future knowledge and living in the moment
  • Translating ancient yogic philosophy into current-day leadership
  • Moment-to-moment choices and consciousness
  • Tips for disconnecting from the constant stream of information and communication
  • Seeing family patterns and behaviors that you despise and thought weren’t in you and waking up to the fact they are

I got so much value from hearing about Traver’s experiences — living and learning through him. I know you’ll love it too.

Coby Kozlowski is a modern-day meditation and consciousness guru (though she would never describe herself that way). Ever humble, she’s amassed a lifetime of experience through working with teachers in the yogic, meditative, and consciousness realms over the past 25 years. Now a teacher of teachers, she has appeared on the cover of Yoga Journal and Mantra Magazine, and was named as “one of the 7 yoga teachers who has changed the practice [of yoga]”.

Known as a vibrant, well-spoken, relatable, and funny inspirational speaker, workshop leader, and storyteller, she has energy that draws you in and offers tangible nuggets of wisdom that leave you inspired and ready to jump start your life without punishing yourself along the way.

I went into this conversation with a list of questions. As it turns out, I only needed one, “What is meditation?”. Coby’s answer was so engaging, thorough, and thought-provoking, that it took up almost our entire time together.

Her approach to meditation is so refreshingly different than what I’ve both learned through practice and read in books and articles, that it left me inspired to want to practice. Normally I think about meditation as something I need to do, I have to do because it’s so good for me, and that I should do more of because of its value to my life. But it’s never really been something I want to do, think I have time for, or look forward to doing. This conversation changed that completely.

Some of the topics we discussed:

  • Traditional meditation - a practice originally designed for monks
  • A new context of meditation - choosing your path, no wrong making
  • The default mode of your brain - focusing on Maslow’s hierarchy of needs and why that is important to know in your meditation practice.
  • “No internal spanking.” You’ll have to listen to understand :-)
  • Meditation as a “massage for your soul”, tending to a part of you as you would tend your garden
  • How to get started and what to do in your meditative experience.

This was truly a transformative conversation for me - shifting my almost 20-year old belief of the definition and requirements for meditation. Whether you’re an experienced meditator or are giving it a shot for the first time, I guarantee that there is something for you in this conversation.

Enjoy!

“Beast-Mode” is a phrase to describe someone that athletically “gets after it” every time they get the ball in a practice or a game. Well, there’s no one I know that epitomizes that more than my son’s soccer coach, Sasha Andrews. She’s played world-class level soccer globally for over 15 years, and by the forces of luck and nature for me, my son, and the other kids she coaches, has settled here in Los Angeles. When you see a photograph of her on or off the field, you also immediately know why the phrase Beauty and the Beast couldn’t be more apropos.

A member of the Canadian national soccer team for over thirteen years, Sasha has as much experience in world-class women's soccer — between national games, the World Cup, and the Olympics — as almost anyone else in the world. She’s been a defender her entire career and is nicknamed the “Gentle Giant.”

Sasha was the middle child of seven, and her siblings were all brothers. She quickly learned to play hard just to keep up. It’s no wonder she eventually became a dominating professional athlete. In her own words, “I didn’t even know I was a girl for the longest time.”

As a teenager, she ranked nationally in both basketball and soccer, eventually having to make a choice between the two — a tough decision for a teenager. At nineteen, she made her debut for the Canadian National Team.

She continues to play professionally today for the Santa Clarita Blue Heat, but most of her time is spent working with kids. She coaches a boys U10 and U12 club team, and teaches elementary and middle school PE.

In this episode we talk about:

  • Growing up as an athlete - family, pressures, time, schedule, homework, brothers
  • The devastating loss of one of her brothers at age 34
  • Life as a professional athlete
  • Competing for a spot and staying on the Canadian National Team for thirteen years
  • The 24 hours before a big game - physical and mental preparation
  • What it’s like to collide full-on with Abby Wambach
  • “Legs up” the day before a game
  • Superstitions and habits
  • Providing feedback and supporting teammates - on and off the field
  • Friendships, relationships, and connection with others

Enjoy!

Carolyn Freyer Jones is a professional life coach. She has supported hundreds if not thousands of men and women in learning how to use their own life’s challenges and obstacles for insight and growth. She has supported them in launching new businesses, strengthening relationships, transforming careers, growing themselves as leaders, and experiencing greater peace and joy. Her clients include corporate executives, business owners, authors, lawyers, television hosts, salespeople, and more.

She is also the principle developer and lead faculty member for the University of Santa Monica’s Soul Centered Professional Coaching Program which has graduated hundreds of soul-centered professional life coaches since it’s inception (me being one!)

So what does a spiritual life coach like Carolyn have to say about your (and her own) upset about President Trump? That’s just one of many other things we talk about like:

  • What it means to live your life in a spiritual context
  • The spiritual “tool” of compassionate self-forgiveness
  • How we’re all wired to judge others (and ourselves)
  • How our worth and value is often tied to what we do in the world rather than who we are
  • What is really underneath the triggers that upset you (yes, you’re projecting)
  • Being around spiritual teachers and saints
  • Goals - what works about them and what doesn’t?
  • Process goals vs. results goals and what’s underneath?
  • Importance of asking, “Why?”
  • How self-judgment keeps you from achieving your goals, regardless of how hard you work at them
  • Training yourself with loving vs. fear and self-judgment
  • The importance of community and knowing it’s value to you in your life.

I loved this conversation with Carolyn. She is a highly insightful teacher and coach - I know you’ll get a lot out of this, as I did!

NOTE: If you only have 5 minutes, jump to 57:15 where Carolyn talks about the current WLC Lifestyle Practice - setting and writing down three goals.

Ryan Hurst is one of the co-founders (and head coach) of the online fitness program called GMB - Gold Medal Bodies. GMB.io is a physical training system that focuses primarily on teaching people how to know their own body and how to move it well, autonomously (appropriately for age and skill level). I mean really, what else is there? As I’ve gone through life, I’ve seen firsthand the challenges people face with their bodies caused by inactivity, lack of use, lack of awareness, and general weakness - so when I first learned about GMB, the philosophic principles upon which it’s based, and the fun I had in going through it’s basic elements training, I fell in love with it.

Ryan’s been developing this program (without really knowing it) for most of his life. As a competitive gymnast until the age of 17, he established a foundation of strength, flexibility, agility, balance, coordination and stamina that most people never know. Then, still a teenager, he found his way to Japan where he went to college and started seriously studying the martial arts. In this practice, yet again, he was developing his capacity know and move his own body.

As he got deeper into martial arts, he found it increasingly difficult to maintain his position in his job due to the long hours and unhealthy lifestyle practices it demanded. He also sustained a shoulder injury. Both things forced him into looking toward fitness as a career.

If you’re participating in the January 2017 WLC, you’re going to see much more of Ryan - he’s going to coach you by video through a series of 8 workouts, one for each week of the Challenge. They are totally optional, but his stuff is filled with new, different, and innovative ways to move your body and to exercise. Guaranteed that no matter what your level, you’ll learn something new. I’m super excited to be able to bring him to you!

During the podcast, you’ll learn much more about Ryan, his philosophy, personal experience, and why you should be super excited about him being our guest coach during the Whole Life Challenge.

Today’s guest is Miki Agrawal is an energetic, passionate bundle of entrepreneurial and creative energy. She was named 2015 Social Entrepreneur of the Year at the World Technology Awards and her Company THINX was named Time Magazine’s “25 Best New Inventions of 2015″. Miki was also the recipient of the TriBeCa Film Festival’s “Disruptive Innovation Award” and was named one of the “Top 20 Millenials on a Mission” by Forbes Magazine.

My connection to her came from the a simple advertisement in my Facebook feed for a product called Tushy (www.tushy.me). It’s a simple and inexpensive add-on bidet for your toilet. I had absolutely no idea when I got it how it would change my post pooping life - as I talk about in the podcast - it’s like my sphincter can rest and recover from 50 years of post-pooping but wiping. I did the math - I’ve wiped over 125,000 times since birth… no wonder it can use some recovery.

By the way, we talk very openly and candidly during the podcast about topics that most people keep private. If this makes you uncomfortable, I recommend you put your discomfort aside and listen anyway.

Back to the Tushy… I was so stoked about mine, that I almost immediately ordered a second one… and I contacted their customer service, and asked to get introduced to their founder to have her on as a guest on the podcast!

During the podcast, Miki talks about how she got where she is today… and what keeps her on track on a daily, weekly and monthly basis. She shares her favorite meditation technique and app, what she’s learned from years of working with a Life Coach, and how she keeps her creative juices flowing (she doesn’t have a shortage of ideas… ever). I hope you enjoy this conversation as much as I did!

You may not recognize Jay Jacobs from his name, but many of you would recognize his face, body, and story. Jay and his daughter, Jennifer, contestants on season eleven of the NBC hit weight-loss reality show, The Biggest Loser.

Jay and his daughter were the Green Team and lost a combined total of 295 pounds on the show! As he found out in his pre-contestant medical screening, Jay barely made it onto the show after being diagnosed with near fatal heart arrhythmia due to a severe case of sleep apnea. Over the course of the show, he became one of America’s favorite contestants. In fact, against all odds and competing against an Olympic Gold Medalist, Jay made it to the coveted Final Four as the only man left standing and after losing an amazing 181 pounds in just eight months. He’s a testament to the phrase “where there is a will, there’s a way.”

Unlike many of the other contestants, Jay has maintained his weight loss since the end of the show through a combination of commitment, consistent exercise, entering athletic events like the Spartan Race and the NYC Marathon, and by keeping no secrets - putting his life in the light so that he’s got nothing to hide.

Some of the things we covered in this episode include:

  • Behind the scenes of The Biggest Loser
  • Applying for and getting chosen for the show (15 of about 200,000 applicants get selected)
  • The importance of your “why?”
  • Secret eating
  • Training with Jilian Michels on the show
  • The moment he realized that he was at cause for his entire family’s weight problem
  • The difference between Biggest Loser training and training in real life
  • His strategies for keeping the weight off
  • The strategy he used to continue losing weight even after he was voted off the show.
  • How he’s learned to virtually eliminate the negative effects of shame and guilt by being absolutely transparent.

This episode is full of inspiring New Year’s nuggets. Enjoy!

You may have heard of Thrive Market (think Whole Foods meets Costco), but you may not have heard of it’s co-founder and co-CEO, Nick Green. Nick started Thrive as a wholesale buying club with a mission to make healthy living easy and affordable for every American family. It was a risky venture, since nothing like it had ever before been attempted.

Using some unique and innovative strategies that we talk about during the podcast, it has completely revolutionized the non GMO and organic food landscape as it currently offers the 4,000 most popular natural and organic products in the world at 25-50% off retail, shipped anywhere in the U.S. for free. For every paid member on the site, the company also sponsors a free membership for a low-income family.
Prior to co-founding Thrive, Nick was the founder and CEO of Ivy Insiders, an education company that made college test prep more affordable and helped over 20,000 students get into better colleges before being acquired by Revolution Prep in 2010.
The story of the original intent, initial growth, build-up, and current leadership model and structure at Thrive is both compelling and inspiring, especially when told right from the mouth of it’s founder. In our hour together, Nick was as transparent as he was generous, holding nothing back, willing to share all of the “secrets” of his success.
There is a lot in this podcast… from the beginnings when he was packing and shipping things from his own garage… to today with hundreds of employees and massive warehouse space. Nick’s is a story of inspiration, turning dreams into reality, believing in yourself in spite of what others say or think, of hard work and perspiration, transparency, integrity, family, and fun. It’s a genuine success story that has already had an incredibly profound impact on the availability of healthy food options in this country.
I know you’ll love this episode. Enjoy!

Scott McGee is a dedicated father and husband, professional good guy/guardian, loyal friend, CrossFitter, and eternal optimist with an open mind and an unconquerable soul - that’s directly from his website. He’s a police officer, serving Santa Monica, CA as a detective, beat officer and a member of the SWAT team. He’s one of the three hosts of the popular CrossFit podcast - the WODCast Podcast. He’s also recently created a blog called The Sisu Way where he writes regularly. And he’s husband plus a father of two awesome boys.

Scott’s physical presence is awesome. He’s imposing… driving a black SUV with tinted windows, wearing all black clothes, black sunglasses, bald… and at 6’4” and muscular, you’re immediately confronted by his presence. If you look no further, you might think you’re in for trouble just seeing him pull up. He’s definitely one person that you want on your team!

But if you take the time to get to know more about this man’s man, you quickly see that his heart, spirit and commitment to serving others, are as large and imposing as his body. He’s a big, committed softy - that will go above and beyond, do whatever it takes, go to the ends of the earth and back, to do something to support someone else or to ease someone way.

This comes through for him both as a police officer, where he is called upon to help others, regardless of their opinion of him, and also as a father, where he was challenged with a yet-to-be born son who had to fight every step of the way just to be born.

Scott doesn’t know the word quit or surrender. He’s a survivor, a leader, someone who pulls you up just by his presence in your life. He’s got a lot to give to the world, and a lot of stories to tell during this podcast that will touch, move and inspire you to never give up.

Such an honor to have him on the show and to call him a friend. Welcome… Scott McGee. Enjoy!

Dr. Andrew Hill is one of the top peak performance coaches in the country. He holds a PhD in Cognitive Neuroscience from UCLA's department of Psychology and continues to do research on attention and cognitive performance. Dr. Hill is the founder of Peak Brain Institute, host of the Head First Podcast with Dr. Hill, Lead Neuroscientist at truBrain, and lectures at UCLA, teaching courses in psychology, neuroscience, and gerontology.

I went in to the Peak Brain Institute of Los Angeles to meet with Dr. Andrew Hill having literally no idea what I was getting myself into. I had agreed, in advance, to get what they call a Quantitative EEG “brain mapping” assessment, and then have Dr. Hill go over the results with me live on the podcast. Easy… and fun. I was about to learn about how awesome my brain function was… or so I thought.

For the test, they put a web of electrodes over my skull and watched my brain waves for about 20 minutes, after which they made me go through a nauseatingly boring number sequencing test. The only hard part of either was keeping myself from drifting off to sleep.

Simple, right? Super fun. Piece of cake. Until hearing the results - live on the podcast. Turns out, I’ve got some brain issues. See that picture below? The one where the map of my brain looks bright red? Those are my Theta waves… and the bright red color indicates I’m 3 or more standard deviations away from normal (which is a lot in statistical talk). YIKES! For the full rundown of what this all means you’ll have to listen in on the podcast.

But don’t fear, it’s not all bad. The point of the testing is not just to find out what’s wrong, but to actually do something about it. Dr. Hill said that with regular training, conditions like mine that can affect my sleep, attention span and ability to focus are fully correctable. I’ll be doing at least a month’s worth of brain training to find out just how much of a difference it makes - so look for the follow-up episode!

Enjoy!

When is the last time you heard someone talking about getting in shape and losing weight where in the next sentence they said they were going to start by addressing sleep? I’m in the health and fitness business… and I can tell you that I’ve NEVER heard someone say that.

Why not? I can tell you… easy… It’s not sexy. It means less time to do other things. And in the type A, results oriented, success driven world we live in, many people look at sleep as a waste of time - something that is optional, even a sign of weakness. But that’s not what Dr. Kirk Parsley would say.

Dr. Parsley is first and foremost a doctor. He’s been practicing medicine for over 12 years. Doc was also a U.S. Navy SEAL - and since earning his medical degree, has spent much of his time serving as the Undersea Medical Officer at Naval Special Warfare Group One. It’s safe to say given his credentials that Kirk knows what it takes to be fit, tough and to get the job done.

But he is also a sleep expert. He’s been a member of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine since 2006 and has served as Naval Special Warfare’s expert on Sleep Medicine. Most of what he does today is work with people to help them achieve optimal health… and much of that work is centered around sleep and recovery.
Doc is full of stories, analogies, and anecdotes that make his message simple and clear. We are sleep deprived and to address it we have to be willing to swim upstream, against the flow of societal norms.
Our conversation is long but well worth the time you spend… you may even get excited about getting a pair of blue-blocking sunglasses after it’s all said and done!

Rafe Furst, graduate from Stanford in computer science, has seen his share of swings in the tech and business world, having been involved with startups since the mid 1990’s. He’s also an avid poker player, both in private games and public tournaments, once winning a World Series of Poker Championship. He’s raised millions for charitable causes over the years and is currently a pioneer in Quantitative Venture Capital, a nascent field based on the convergence of equity crowdfunding, complexity economics and securities law reform.

I asked Rafe to be on the podcast because of an intriguing question he asked me during our first phone conversation. I was telling him about the 7 Habits of the Whole Life Challenge, and he posed a question, “What if there were an 8th Habit that you inadvertently built in without knowing it - the habit of good decision making?” I needed to know more...
Inherent to the WLC as well as pretty much anything in your life is the necessity to make decisions. Some are easy, every day, almost automatic - habitual. Others are clear, obvious choices that have far-reaching implications for your life. The place that people get tweaked is when they mix up evaluating the quality of the decision with the outcome or result. Good decisions can lead to undesirable outcomes. An example from poker - you can make every right decision and still lose a hand. You can also make every right decision in a given evening a still lose all your money. It’s the trap that a novice player falls into - looking at the result (I lost all my money), and questioning your decisions (I must have made bad ones). Instead, Rafe looks at his success over the long term, knowing that if he continues to make good decisions (regardless of the immediate outcome), he will eventually get the outcome he wants.
Do you see the parallel to health and fitness? Wow… it hit me like a brick in the forehead. People start making good decisions each day… and if they don’t see the result they expect relatively quickly (losing weight, fitting into clothes, dropping dress sizes, achieving a certain score or time for a workout), they judge their decisions as bad or wrong and quit. Or, they achieve the result they expected and quickly forget that they need to continue to make the good decisions that got them there (the yo-yo diet syndrome).

Imagine you’re a motivational speaker for a living (I know… it’s a stretch for me too), and you’re asked to give a talk to a bunch of college students about unhealthy addictions - one of which is over-eating. Now imagine that you weigh over 450 lbs, have a 58 inch waist and wear size XXXXXL clothing. See the problem?

This was the exact scenario that my guest this week faced… that moment was his rock bottom. It was also the point from which his life really began. Meet “Tinier” Tim Bauer. He is a fraction of the man he used to be, literally, having lost almost 250 lbs since that moment just a few years ago. Tim is on a crusade to change the world. To tell his story, with complete transparency, in an effort to inspire others take charge of their life through action. During the podcast, I asked Tim all sorts of questions, for example, what is it like to sit down in coach on an airplane weighing 450 lbs, knowing exactly what that would mean for others seated around him. Tim is completely honest, sharing both what he showed on the outside during these impressionable moments, to what was really going on on the inside - the hurt, pain, fear and suffering. Tim’s transformation, and subsequent willingness to share it with the world is a miracle. His story will affect and inspire you no matter your personal history… because it’s the same story for all of us on some level. We all have our issues, some obvious and on the outside, and some invisible to the eyes of others and on the inside. It’s human to be afraid, to have been hurt, to be struggling, unsure, to judge, lash out, and get angry; just as it’s human to use things that feel good to help us avoid dealing with our issues - alcohol, drugs, food, sugar, shopping, gambling, sex, etc. That’s why when one man does it, steps out of the crowd, has the courage to walk in the opposite direction to the extent that Tim Bauer has, it touches us all. This is an incredibly powerful podcast… buckle up, get out a box of tissues… you’re not going to want to miss a word.

“I am coming to the realization –– albeit slowly –– that to be content, you have to be authentic. And to be authentic, you have to be vulnerable. If you’re not open to the problems that come in life and aren’t willing to accept setbacks and failures and ridicule and criticism and wear that and move forward, you’re going to be in trouble.” ~ Adam Stanecki

Adam Stanecki joins me this week from the Gold Coast of Australia for the latest installment of the WLC Podcast. Adam calls himself a “lifestyle entrepreneur”. He is a coach who helps people uncover their true potential in business and in life through positive mindset, mindfulness, and mastery. He’s been in the fitness industry for over 20 years, opened the third CrossFit affiliate in Australia many years ago, and has been on his own path of health and fitness mastery since first starting martial arts at the early age of 7. He’s also a music buff, regularly posting his own quotes on Instagram (@adamstanecki) in the style of good old-fashioned album jacket artwork.

Though I knew Adam by name before this conversation, we had never actually spoken in person. And I tried something new for this podcast, something I learned about the way Larry King conducts many of his interviews - with absolutely zero preparation. So I went into the conversation without any real idea of what we would talk about or where it would go - something that was particularly nerve wracking for me for the first part of the recording.

Adam and I enjoy a meandering conversation about life, authenticity, mastery, vulnerability, kids and parenting, training, effectiveness, and personal growth. It’s a very real conversation about very real and current life issues - things that we all think about and deal with all the time. I really enjoyed the conversation and am sure you will too.

“Everything that matters in my life came after ‘fk it’. So there’s just so much magic on the other side of ‘fk it’!” ~ Mary Shenouda, aka the Paleochef

Have you ever thought about what you would do if you just said, ‘f**k it?”

Seriously.

Just stop and think about that for a minute.

What are you not doing because you don’t know how, it’s too hard, you’re unsure of the result, you’re afraid of the consequences, you don’t know where to begin, you’re afraid of screwing it up, the risk is too great, someone may find out you don’t know what you’re doing, you’re afraid of failure, etc?

Mary’s Shenouda’s life began once she decided to let go of all of those reasons, fears, rationalizations and made-up consequences of pursuing the life of her dreams, said “f**k it!” ... and just started doing it.

Suffering from headaches and migraines for pretty much all of her life, she discovered her own cure by changing the types of food she ate… from what you might call a “normal” American diet to Paleo. While doing so, she became incredibly proficient in the kitchen, honing her skills as a self-taught chef and coming up with her own twist on recipes and dishes. She even invented a few of her own snacks and treats that she is well known for to this day (like Unicorn Fuel and Phat Fudge).

The result of this? She’s a highly sought after private chef for the elite of Los Angeles with an Instagram following of over 90,000 and a wildly popular energy snack that she sells all over the world called Phat Fuel.

Mary’s life is an open book… and during this podcast she shares a lot of herself and what got her here. She even does a shim-sham flim-flam on me and starts interviewing me at one point.

Check it out - I know you’ll enjoy!

Curtis Estes has been a wealth management advisor for Northwestern Mutual for 25 years and is, quite frankly, a superstar. He has built an expansive network of people he serves all over Southern California his book of business is literally a Who’s Who of Los Angeles. But that isn’t why I invited him to be on the Podcast.

Curtis is a lifelong committed learner… a student of life. He considers it his master work… and has been observing, tweaking, adjusting, and overhauling it regularly with help from coaches and teachers for decades. His most recent book, Your Life By Design, was inspired by his realization in a therapy session that he was not living up to his own standards as a father or husband. And Curtis being Curtis, went on a mission to change that… the book is that story.

Curtis is incredibly transparent about his life. In his effort to serve others, he willingly shares both his shortcomings and triumphs. And during our conversation, he doesn’t disappoint. He talks about the things he uses each day, week, month and year to keep him on track - the daily habits, secrets, and shortcuts (there aren’t really any of those!) that have allowed him to build and extraordinary life for himself and his family.

Ever humble, he acknowledges that he is a “work in progress” and strives to do more and be better each and every day.

I was so inspired by what Curtis shared that after this podcast I bought Hal Elrod’s book and started practicing his Miracle Morning routine. It works. Many awesome takeaways from this one.
