SITH OR JEDI: Test of Best Friend Back Up
You and your best friend go shopping together during the holidays. You both are very excited because with the end of Christmas and the beginning of the New Year you know there are going to be sales galore. You never really go out, but this year, your BFF was super excited and you agreed to go with them and make the best out of a crowded situation and maybe get in on a few sales too.
While shopping in an over-crowded department store your best friend spots a really nice bag. Your BFF bee lines directly to it and grabs it at the same time another woman does. They each take turns at trying to pull the bag out of each others hand and what starts out as a small tug-of-war erupts into to women on the verge of screaming and clawing each others eyes out.
You've never in your life seen your BFF act this way and you don't know what to do.
Pull her away, let the other woman have the coveted bag and try to talk your best friend down. You know she's better than this and there are other items to be had. Do nothing. You turn around slightly embarrassed and pretend you're just an innocent bystander while keeping an eye out for mall security. Help your BFF out! It doesn't matter who found it first but whoever has the strongest pull and the most hands on the bag wins! Perform an elaborate distraction technique on the other woman and give your BFF the extra leverage she needs to win the ultimate battle.

Sith or Jedi: Test of the Recycled Gift
The Holiday Season is among us and you have no real plans on what to buy for every person on your list. A list that you keep short with the names of the usual people you know are going to also buy you something for the holiday. Money is beyond tight and this list already keeps you pretty poor throughout the month.
Someone, not on the list, gives you a very nice present. This upsets your normal budget of presents because now you feel obligated to by a present for them in return. You scour the house and try to see if there is an equally awesome something that you may have gotten at one point and didn't use. There's nothing.
What do you do?
Suck it up and find something on caliber with what you received, which was very nice. You know you can find something budgetary, but where and how hard will it be is the question. You just decide that you're going to find them just the right gift and give it to them. You find a pair of unopened socks and an unused fingernail trimming kit that you got from a cheeky great aunt 10 years ago. Perfect! You wrap these things up and hope that the receiver doesn't notice the cheapness of the gift. You say thank you and hope you don't see the giver over the holidays. Maybe you'll get something that you don't want and you can "pass it on" to them. Or not, you really don't care, considering you didn't agree to buy them anything in the first place.

Sith or Jedi: Test of Inactive Guild member
You have a relatively brand new guild that has become very popular in Star Wars: The Old Republic. One of the rules that you have in place, because the guild is so popular, is that any character that hasn't been played in 20 days will be removed from the guild. The reason you have this rule is so that people who play their toons on a regular basis can be invited into the guild which BioWare has a cap of 500 players allowed. You are currently hitting over 400 characters in the guild. Many of them are alts.
One player logs into the game after said amount of time and finds himself removed from the guild. He whispers an officer and promptly gets invited back only to start complaining in guild chat about how stupid the rule is and then proceeds to call everyone in the guild "welfare recipients" and that he's a working man with a job, responsiblity's and kids. This is quite obviously offensive to many players in the guild.
After taking him aside and talking with him privately, do you -
Understand where he is coming from but kindly ask him to apologize to the rest of the guild members even though he's still fuming. Let him have his rant, tell everyone to ignore him. Maybe he'll shut up and cool off on his own. /gkick his hairy wookie butt to the curb. No one talks to anyone like that and he's obviously not an intelligent person.

Sith or Jedi: Test of the Bank Item Thief
You run a rather large guild that has 250 plus people in it and it's growing everyday. Recently, you've become quite popular with a bunch of new players coming in and you try to keep and open mind by not putting a level cap on guild vault access, but someone always wants to ruin it for everyone else.
A certain player, new to the guild is a nice enough person when you invite them, but then you notice that in the guild vault logs, they're taking items of value out, most of which are items they can't use.
You confront the player and they say that they really need the in-game money and were selling them and that they planned on paying the guild back.
You -
Kindly ask the player not to do it anymore and give them enough of your own in-game currency to help them out with whatever they need. Ask the player to stop doing it and give them another chance, letting them off with a warning. Immediately admonish them, give them a stern lecture about guild politics and /gkick them to the curb, then let everyone in the guild know who stole from them and that they and their alts are never allowed in the guild again. You also change guild bank access, so that only people with seniority have access, causing a few other players to /gquit.

Sith or Jedi: Test of the Mailbox Muffin (Thank you Thross for sending in this Sith or Jedi test! Send us your test at corellianrun@gmail.com !)
You’re running late one morning to get to work and clock in, but first you need to visit the nearby USPS mail box and mail a bill payment. As you approach the mail box, you see that someone has left a half-eaten and sticky looking blueberry muffin right in front of the slot where the mail goes. You roll your eyes and think that probably a drunk college student or a homeless person left it there last night. Do you:
Sweep the half-eaten muffin off the mail box and into the bushes with your hand and then mail your payment? Doing this will mean you will need to wash your hands before clocking in and make you a few minutes late. However, you will have the satisfaction of knowing that other people such as your coworkers using the mail box later won’t have to encounter the muffin. Deftly avoid touching the sticky muffin and just mail your payment. After all, you didn’t put it there so why should you clean up after someone else’s mess and be late for work. Let someone who is not running or the postal worker deal with it. Decide you will mail your payment instead on your lunch hour at another mail box and proceed to smear the muffin on the mail slot handle and shove the rest down the mail slot to be “mailed.” You walk away laughing manically like Darth Sidious as you head to the office bathroom to wash your hands.

Sith or Jedi: Test of the Parade Goer
While at a them park coined as the happiest place on earth, you find a nice spot to sit while waiting for the main parade. While you're sitting with your child a person sits not only right next to you, but practically ON you. It's truly inconsiderate. You try to move over a little to give yourself room but there isn't any. You are relieved when the person can't fit their entire ten person party into the space and you've made it clear, you're not budging one inch, even if they're breathing on you and their breath smells like putrid cotton candy. The family gives up and moves so you take this moment of freedom and set your backpack right next to you, making it look like your saving a seat.
One minute after the parade starts a woman and her baby ask if there's anyone sitting next to you and essentially if you can move your backpack. You:
1 - Smile kindly and move your pack so that she can have the last spot on the parade route. 2 - Pretend you don't hear her and continue to laugh and cheer at the parade. 3 - Remember that bean burrito you had for lunch? Look her right in the eye and let all the pressure fly loud and proud. Then move the backpack.

Sith or Jedi: Test of the Big Sale
There is a big sale in a local mall and while you are not a huge "sale" person, you figure that with money being tight, you could use a deal or two for some holiday presents. While you are there, you find the perfect something for a loved one and it's very affordable at 75% off retail price, it's also the last one on the shelf. You pick it up and you're walking around the sale trying to procure more items to make your adventure complete even though the store is mostly "picked over".
As you stop at a group of things that you thin would work as gifts, you set your one perfect item down to free your hands up to look through the bin. As you're looking, a sweet little old lady comes up from behind and gently takes your perfect item which had been set next to you.
She quietly says to her equally old companion, in her sweet grandmotherly voice, that it would be the perfect something for her daughter who has had the emotional ups and downs all year and that this item would bring a smile to the daughters face. You look over and see that the look on the little old ladies face is simply glowing when she talks about giving the item to her daughter for a holiday present. Do you:
Smile to yourself and walk away knowing that you can find another present elsewhere and that saying nothing at all will make someone's holiday a little bit brighter. Smile and tell her kindly that it's yours but you will help her find another one. When you can't find another item like it, you let her have yours, wishing her a happy holiday as you walk away to find something else. Tell the kind old woman that it's the last one in the store and that since you found it, you get first dibs, but if she wants it bad enough, she can give you retail price for it after you buy it.

Sith or Jedi: Test of The Insomniac
After going to bed at a reasonable hour you have to get up at around 2am to do whatever it is people have to do at 2am. You finish what you're doing and lie down in bed, close your eyes and find that you're fighting sleep like a professional boxer hopped on up on ten gallons of caffeine. Swimming through your head is ALL that you have to accomplish before you leave on vacation in two days, none of which has gotten done, including cleaning the house. What do you do?
Quietly name the titles of as many books as you can in your head until you wear your brain out and go to sleep. Play mindless puzzle games on your tablet or computer until you get so tired you have to fall to sleep. Beat yourself senseless, while calling yourself names making you fear that you've actually successfully moved over into the zone of crazy.

Sith or Jedi: Test of The Last Glass
It's girls night in and you and your best friend are staying in while your spouses take the kids out to a movie. You thought you had prepared fully when you bought chips and snacks for the evening but when you go and pour the wine, you find you've forgotten to purchase more.
After you pour, you see there's enough for one glass. You know your best friend loves wine and could probably use it after the week they had at work. Do you -
Give your best friend the last glass. As much as you want it, you know your BFF could use it more. Pour it down the sink. If you both can't have wine, no one will. Try to enjoy the rest of the evening drinking only water. Wine shmine! Take a few sips from their glass before handing it over and then break out the 18 year whiskey and start doing shots. Have fun laughing with your friend because this is the good life.

Sith or Jedi: Test of the Noisy Neighbor
It is Saturday. It is your day to sleep in and get the much needed rest you need after a hard work week. You are awakened at 7 am by the sound of a loud lawnmower. It appears your neighbor has decided to mow his lawn early. Do you....
Decide to get up and mow you own lawn to get it out of the way. Just ignore it and let the lull of the lawnmower motor put you back to sleep. Get up, go to your neighbor and sarcastically thank him for letting you sleep late and secretly vow to wake him up as pay back on the follow day.

Sith or Jedi: Test of the Out of Stock Sales Item
Armed with your sales ad for a local department store, you head off to shop. You arrive when the store opens on the first day of the sale. The store is not busy so you feel confident the item you want will be there. You go to the section that you believe is where the item is located. Unable to find the item, you hunt down a clerk. The clerk says “Oh I am sorry, we are sold out.” Do you...
Sigh in frustration and look for a similar product. Tell the clerk that it isn't right to advertise if they didn't have any of the product in stock, then leave the store. Ask to speak to a supervisor and insist you get a rain check (when rain checks are not normally allowed) because you know they didn't have any of the product as advertised.

You're waiting in line at a prominent coffee chain and a woman behind you is being a complete and total witch. She complains loudly about the help, about having to wait in line behind you and about the "crappy decor of the store". After you order coffee you realize that she orders the exact same thing but with soy milk because, "she's lactose intolerant". A few minutes pass and the barista puts two nearly identical coffee's on the counter, one with soy milk and one with regular. You accidentally grab the one made with soy and take a swig, It's delicious. Realizing your mistake. Do you -
Immediately tell the barista and apologize so that a new double machiato soy latte can be made. Shrug and tell the witch that her drink may or may not be soy. Graciously hand the witch the lactose latte. Smile, knowing that Force will be strong with this one...in the bathroom.

Just as you almost arrive at the checkout lane a small child about 7 years old darts in from of your overflowing cart and you almost hit him. You are a little annoyed, because he didn't even say he was sorry before stopping next to what appears to be his Mom. You continue your quest to reach the checkout lane and just as your start pushing your cart another child darts in front of you that is about 5 years old. Again, you almost hit the child and he also doesn't say anything before reaching his Mom. Their mom witnessed the whole incident and said nothing to her children and gave YOU a dirty look. Do you...
Smile and comment on how cute her children are. Ignore the situation and continue on your path to check out just to get out of there. Comment to the Mom about how you almost ran over two of her FOUR children before continuing your goal of checking out.

Sith or Jedi: Test of the Classroom Cheater
A woman in your sociology group has copped out to cheating on all of her tests and she's getting an 'A' on every one of them because she's copying the smart girl in class who works hard. The cheater barely makes any effort in class and the teacher knows this, in fact, the whole class knows this. She never does any of her homework either. Clearly she doesn't care about this class. While she's generally a nice lady and she hasn't been mean to you at all, you feel that she has taken advantage of the system and you want to take steps to stop her cheating ways. Do you -
Come along side her and offer to help her study thereby eliminating her need to cheat and helping to give her confidence to pass the tests on her own? Do nothing at all? It's none of your business and the teacher probably knows that she's been cheating since she doesn't understand any of the concepts in class discussions and never does the homework. Completely throw her under the bus? Just because you can cheat, doesn't mean you should and it's unfair to the people she's cheating off of since they do most of the work. Besides, your teacher does seem rather oblivious at times. There may be a chance the teacher doesn't know at all.

SITH OR JEDI: The Test of the Computer Generated Political Telephone Call
You are just sitting down for dinner and the telephone rings. You answer it only to find that it is a computer generated political message. You know that there is a law that all computer generated calls must allow people to opt out by pressing 9, so you press 9. Nothing happens. You can hung. The following night at about the same time, you get another call from the same political organization. This continues almost daily for the next 3 weeks.
Do you:
Just hang up the phone and go back to eating dinner, not minding the call since it is for the person you will be voting for. Hang up the phone, go back to eating dinner, and vow not to vote for that person. Record the time of the call. Call the political organization and complain. Letting the person on the line know that even though that person was your candidate of choice, that you would not be voting for them because of the phone call spam.

SITH OR JEDI: Test of the Bad Cashier
You have just finished your grocery shopping and find a line to check out that isn't too long. You start to unload your groceries on the belt and had the cashier your earth-friendly bags to load the groceries in and the cashier makes this heavy exhale in disgust and takes the bags. You smile and tried to make light chatter as you grouped my items for bagging. Every time you would move an item she would over-react as if you interrupted her when you weren't even close to the items she was working with. No matter what you did to lighten the mood, she wasn't having any of it.
Do you:
You pay for your groceries and tell the cashier to have a wonderful day as you leave.
You ignore the situation, pay for your groceries and leave.
You pay for your groceries, sarcastically tell the cashier to have a nice day then go find a supervisor and tell her how horrible the cashier was.

You have a name brand computer that you bought from a major retailer. You go to turn it on and it won't come on. You take it to the retailer for a warranty repair. They have your computer for 2 weeks and you are all excited when you get it back. Three days later, your hard drive crashes and you are yet again forced to take your computer in for repair.
Do you:
You tell the tech what is wrong, take your repair order and let things be processed on the retailer's time schedule and procedure. You tell the tech what is wrong, take your repair order, and ask that the repair be done inhouse so you can get it back quicker. When you arrive, you politely yet firmly explain how your computer is lemon and ask that it be replaced.

SITH OR JEDI: The Case of the Crazy Clown
You're at a bar in a rockin' city, enjoying your beer and the great music and atmosphere when a guy in rodeo clown makeup sits next to you at the bar. He sits pretty close but you think nothing of it and you place an order for another beer and a sandwich. The beer comes first but before you can take a swig, the rodeo clown gently grabs it and lifts it to his mouth, taking a juicy swig. While this irritates you, you think nothing of it, maybe he ordered a beer at the same time. Your sandwich comes next and while you're talking to your friend, you spy out of the corner of your eye, the rodeo clown using one finger to pull the sandwich plate to himself. You quickly pull the plate back resulting in the rodeo clown reaching down and not so gently grabbing your poor sandwich, bringing it to his mouth and taking a hearty bite out of it. You:
Shake your head and just give the man your sandwich. Maybe he's poor and hungry. Tell him that you're upset with him, notify the barkeep and have him thrown out. Make sure he gets a really good bite of that sandwich by following it up with a fist to the mouth.

SITH OR JEDI: Test of the Outrageous Pug Group
You're a healer in a PUG and the tank is being an outrageous jerk. Though there have been no major problems, the tank is constantly demanding instant debuff cleansing and faster heals but unwilling to slow down when pulling mobs. It gets to the point where they are calling you the "worst healer in the game" even though you've asked repeatedly for them to slow down. Even though you're doing a great job, the two other members of your PUG, don't speak up to support you and one of them even complains about a slow heal they've received. Suddenly, the tank pulls a few too many mobs to handle easily. Do you:
Heal everybody like a pro, sacrificing yourself in the process to show them how good you really are. Just do what you can and if there's a wipe, blame the tank. Port out asap the minute he pulls and let the bitches die.

As you're getting out of a car at a local shop a woman in a very expensive automobile with a 'Princess' license plate frame pulls in beside you. You both reach the door to the shop at the same time and as you open the door, without saying "excuse me" she rushes past you to get inside. At first you get a bit perturbed but toss it off as nothing and get over it. Later, while shopping you see that she is being especially rude to the clerks that are trying to help her, belittling them and just being plain rude.
After you finish your shopping foray, you drive down the street to see the 'Princess' stuck on the side of the road with a flat tire. You:
Stop and lend a hand because not only does this act of kindness reflect better on you but it may help her extend the hand of kindness to another. Smirk to yourself as you drive by knowing that the bitch likely has auto insurance to help her get that tire fixed. Roll down your window and point at her whilst cackling mercilessly until she cries.

SITH OR JEDI: Test of the Unpleasant Train Passengers
You're enjoying a pleasant train trip with your young children. The ride is about three hours long. Near you are seated three bratty children and their completely inattentive parents. The brats are loud, they throw food and they bully your own kids. At some point the mom leans over and asks you, "What stop did they say this was?" Do you:
Knowing that her stop isn't for some time, you tell her the truth about what stop is coming up. Tell her, "I'm sorry, I couldn't hear it over the sound of your child screaming." Again, knowing that her stop isn't for some time, lie to her saying, "Yes, this is absolutely your stop allow me help you with your bags."

SITH OR JEDI: Test of the Chatty Patrons
It's a beautiful Sunday morning and you decide that it would be a nice day to go and sit at your favorite outside restaurant. The waitress seats you next to a very nice, albeit chatty, couple. You make polite conversation and then open your newspaper to relax and read. The chatty couple get progressively louder and in doing so try to continue to make conversation with you even though it is quite apparent that you don't wish to join in. Do you:
Put your newspaper away and politely engage in conversation. Give one or two word answers but clearly avoid engaging further going so far as to give body language that show's you're not interested in conversing. Throw the newspaper down on the table every time they talk to you and passive aggressively state that you really wish that there were more people in the world who were respectful of other people's need for quiet time.

SITH OR JEDI: Test of the Raid Night Late Arrival
You have had a long day at work, but you are looking forward to quitting time because you know it's "raid night" in your favorite game. As you are preparing to leave work, your boss comes in and asks you to research an important topic for tomorrow's staff meeting. That research is going to take you about an hour and cause you to arrive 15 minutes late for your in-game raid event. What do you do?
Go to your guild's website, notify everyone that they will need to replace you because you are working about 15 minutes late. You don't want 15 other people standing around waiting on you. Go to your guild's website, notify everyone that you will be running 15 minutes late, but secretly hope they will wait on you. If they have to replace you, you aren't happy about it but you know it's the right thing to do. Go to your guild's website, notify everyone you are running late and ask everyone to wait until you get there. After all, you are the tank! The raid can't succeed without you and if they replace you, there will be hell to pay!

We’re back to our regular format this week with Carla, Kathy, and Roxanne. We also invited the fellows from TORWars, Jeff Hollis and David Moore, just because they are fun. The five of us debate Datacrons and the bolster system, plus we venture into release date speculation. Jeff and David have to leave after the Newsnet segment, which is good because Roxanne gets very, um, “excited” when we talk about skipping story in BioWare games. Somehow she manages to bring Silence of the Lambs into the conversation.

Gabe Amatangelo's Warzone Blows Everyone Away
Lead PvP Designer Gabe Amatangelo kicked off the Tuesday session with a short presentation on PvP in warzones. Many features of SWTOR warzones focus on building community behavior through the proper placement of "carrots," which entice players away from that all-for-me mentality, and nudges them toward a let's-coordinate-and-beat-the-other-guys strategy.
Recap of Gabe's presentation, our warzone experiences, and Q&A highlights after the jump.
PRESENTATION
Badges, Community Building PvP In SWTOR warzones, each player has a role to play, and each player is encouraged to play as part of a team. Badges are rewarded for an array of teamwork-oriented behaviors.
The tanking Guard ability absorbs damage to a friendly player within fifteen meters. A bubble-like visual cue tells you the player is being protected, while a projectile animation to the tank shows that damage is being absorbed. Damage to the tank is normal, damage to those being protected is diminished. Defending an objective earns badges not only for the player who clicked on the turret, but also for the players nearby. If you collect enough badges without dying, you earn a badge streak reward. Commendations: at the end of the warzone, you can vote a fellow teammate as a kind of most valuable player. Commendations are awarded.
Valor, Ranks, Gear
PvP sets are unique and are purchased with valor tokens. You can also buy PvP consumables and trinkets with valor tokens. All valor tokens are awarded at the end of the match. There will be ranks. PvP gear has approximately a ten percent edge over equivalent PvE gear.
Misc.
Resolve: any crowd control ability triggers a Resolve bar above the victim's head. Each crowd control attack fills the Resolve bar more. When the bar is filled, the player is immune to crowd control for a certain amount of time. Power-Ups available on the battlefield. Teams that own one of the objectives gain additional taxi paths back to the action. When defeated you do not come back at full health. Take a minute to buy useful consumables from the nearby vendor before hopping onto the speederbike to get back to the battlefield.
THE WARZONE The presentation ended and we were allowed to start the Alderaan warzone. After a short practice session, we started the match for keepsies. Lots of laughing and dying and killing. First match went to the Republic, second match went to the Empire. Stephen Reid warned that whoever won two out of three would earn a nerf for the entire faction. That didn't stop the Republic team from going for the win in the final match, an exciting back and forth exchange that many times looked like a Sith victory, but always tilted back in the Republic's favor.
"WHY CAN'T THE EMPIRE STOP LOSING???" someone shouted at one point. I think it was Dover. He likes to shout a lot.
Finally, the Republic prevailed. Stephen Reid looked at the numbers ticking down and pronounced, "It's over." Within another minute or so, the Republic had made a comeback of, shall we say, heroic proportions. The last seconds of the match had TOROcast's Samm, refusing to die as he slashed, tumbled, and even somehow leapt onto the gun turret, with Empire players trying to do him in. Just when it looked like it was curtains for his Jedi Consular, the timer finally ran out and the victory message declared the Republic winners. Applause and high-fives went around the room.
One word: cinematic.
I leaned over to Samm and asked, "How did it feel?" Samm can always be counted on to give an honest, heartfelt reaction.
"Perfect," he said. "It felt perfect."
Q&A WITH GABE AMATANGELO A Q&A session with Gabe was meant to begin immediately afterward, but got off to an amusing start when it seemed that no one had any questions. Apparently, we were so satisfied and pumped after our Alderaan warzone experience that our brains had melted and ...

BioWare, for inviting us to the wonderful Fan Site Summit. Special thanks to Stephen Reid, David Bass, and Georg Zoeller. Lance Baumgard, Honey Dijon for leaving nice reviews on iTunes
Principal Lead Combat Designer Georg Zoeller wrapped up the Summit with an intimate Q&A session with the few fansites that remained Tuesday afternoon. Our favorite reveals:
Metrics are mostly used to follow up on player feedback, rather than as the starting ground for figuring things out. Metrics help figure out the right balance for difficulty. Devs look to see if players are challenged and learning, but “we’re not afraid of death as part of the game experience.” Whereas players in other MMOs may use only two to three primary abilities, SWTOR is designed so that players will use four to five. Right now Bounty Hunters level faster because their first companion is Mako, a healer. This results in less downtime. Devs are trending toward making everyone’s first companion more of a jack-of-all-trades. More Imperial Agent love: Georg says, “I actually think that some of the best story in the game is on the Agent class, some of the best characters you encounter is on that class.” It is natural that some classes are more popular than others. Devs will not buff or nerf classes just to artificially achieve equal representation of all classes. In solo play, relying completely on companion AI is sufficient. Flashpoints and open world PvP requires more micro-managing for optimal play. AI-wise, companions are about 60% effective when compared to an actual player.
Daniel Erickson & Blaine Christine
Lead Writer Daniel Erickson and Live Producer Blaine Christine teamed up to field questions about the game. We’re sad the part where Stephen Reid tells Daniel Erickson that he has to stop talking so much was cut out.
Favorite reveals after the jump.
Here are our favorite reveals:
Blaine Christine has the power to command everyone at BioWare to log on and go jump up and down on one spot in Nar Shaddaa for fifteen minutes. Datacrons show up on your map while questing. No vendors on your ship. The role of companions is increasing. Daniel Erickson says big things are coming down the pipe that will change “everything that you guys are thinking how we deal with them.” Daniel Erickson: “This game is not built to play without your companions.” AI recently improved so companions will heal other party members, not just you. New crew skill: Archaeology. Empire and Republic will mingle from an early start. They meet face to face on Nar Shaddaa, but cannot fight. By the next world, it’s everyone in everyone else’s face. Cross-faction communication is still being tested.
David Bass & Damion Schubert
Principal Lead Systems Designer Damion Schubert answered questions on a wide range of topics. We got some important reveals in this twenty-four minute Q&A session. Listen to the full audio to hear Kathy get derailed when Damion starts giving her the crazy eyebrows as she asks her question about gear for neutral players! She begged Brooks to let her re-record her question, but he was a meanie and said no. He also laughed and said, ‘I felt SO bad for you!”
Our favorite reveals after the jump.
Here are our favorite reveals:
Dark and Light armor is available from drops and vendors right now. Neutral armor is not in the game right now, but it is in the works for strictly Gray players. It will be better to be pure gray than leaning towards Dark or Light. The extremes: +5 Light, -5 Dark Companion Affection Rating affects the chance to get a crit on a crafted item in a small way. It affects the length of time needed to complete a crafted item to a greater extent. However, in general, Affection Rating will not tilt crew skill effectiveness in an overly dramatic way. You can increase Companion Affection Rating with gifts, as in Dragon Age. Mini-games like Pazaak are not in the game right now. However, they are definitely on Damion’s “Big Wall of Crazy.” Especially Pazaak. Crafted items will not have random stats -- too annoying to mouse over each piece of identically-named gear to check individual stats. Guild advancement system probably not in game at release. But remember the Big Wall of Crazy! Some in-game tools for role-players, but SWTOR will not heavily focus on role-playing. “The best role-playing comes from the imagination.”

James Ohlen, Game Director of Star Wars: The Old Republic, took a few minutes to talk to us at PAX East. We touch on guilds, how designers must now listen to playtesting feedback, and the balancing act of expectation vs. innovation. James also takes our Sith or Jedi test, The Test of the Elevator Door.
The brief silence after the one-minute mark denotes the ninety-seconds of questions about guilds that James couldn’t discuss.
Transcript of interview after the jump.
CRR: A couple days ago they released a lot of information about guilds, which was very exciting to a lot of people. Can you tell us a little bit about the pre-launch? You have guilds that are registering ahead of time, is that right?
James Ohlen: Yeah, so we know that one of the key points to having a successful Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game is by having a game that really encourages social play and encourages people to find online friends, joining guilds. That’s the glue that keeps players coming back to play your game over and over again. So we want to make sure that our guilds are very successful. So one of our plans was to have this early launch of the guild program so players could form their guilds way before the game launches, and therefore, they can have their groups together and they’ll already be ready. It’s something that other companies haven’t done yet and we felt, “Hey it’s just a little innovation in guilds.”
[We talked a little about certain aspects of the guild pre-launch. James wasn’t able to elaborate on specific details such as how BioWare will address some guilds’ concerns about caps on number of members per guild, or how guilds will react to having their server chosen for them by BioWare, etc.]
CRR: Anytime you try to take control away from the player, their first reaction is to say, “Wait a minute!”
JO: One thing that we think is really important is to take feedback from our fanbase and make sure that we use that feedback to make the game that they want to play, so if we get a lot of feedback on certain aspects of the game we’re going to make modifications. If people don’t like something we’re not going to say, “Hey, we’re designers, we know best.”
CRR: That brings me to something wonderful I heard yesterday. Daniel Erickson quoted you, he said, “This is what James Ohlen tells us. The whole end part of the product is just polish. Everything that you have for a philosophy, and everything that you think as a designer that you think is right, is now wrong. The players are the ones that are right.” Can you explain what you meant by that?
JO: When you’re at the home stretch, you have to make a lot of painful decisions. You don’t have unlimited resources. You don’t have unlimited time. You have to make adjustments if you’re going to make the game better. So you have to put aside your ego and you have to just use the feedback from the data you’re getting to use the limited resources and time you have to make the best changes in the game you can. I have the most power over decisions on the game on the project, but I try to limit myself as much as I can because I know that if I make some decision that I care about, I’m taking away resources that we could, for example, use to make adjustments that a huge percentage of our fans would think would make the game better. So that’s really what it’s about, it’s about making sure that you’re making adjustments to the game that the fans and the players are going to see have the biggest impact and make the game better for them.
CRR: This past summer a lot of the talk was about how choice matters and you make these decisions in flashpoints and things change and don’t stay the same. Now we’re talking about repeatability. Is that one of the things that maybe changed a little bit from your original idea?
JO: Yeah, the thing about flashpoints is they’re one of our key social activities. They encourage players to group up into groups of four an...

Friday Update 1/28: Flashpoints Game Systems Page. A sneak peek into five flashpoints we can expect to see in TOR, plus a nice little video. End game! They said “end game!” Gamespot interview with World Designer Jesse Sky. Changing events based on player decisions and discoveries = repeatability. Friday Update 2/4: Flashpoint Developer Blog. Jesse: thumbs down on trash mobs and strict linear progression. Dev Tracker: Georg Zoeller and Damion Schubert talk about skipping cut scenes. Will somebody PLEASE tell us how to pronounce “Georg??” Dev Tracker: Damion Schubert explains his philosophy on harsh death penalties Dev Tracker: Georg Zoeller addresses concerns about server faction balance. Metrics tell them that in testing, the split between Republic and Empire is pretty even. Also, players are relatively unaffected by the Next New Thing syndrome and do not, for instance, respond to a cool class video by switching their preference to that class. Release date kerfuffle. Recap time! Mike Hickey says investors are betting against SWTOR. Brean Murray Carret & Co. downgrades EA. MCVUK.com claims that “development sources” are whispering about a September release. Unfortunately, they also mention EA Louse and the unsubstantiated $300 million figure, which makes people think that their report is based on an anonymous blog. Also, they cite EA Louse as a BioWare dev, which even EA Louse did not claim to be. Interestingly, all references to EA Louse and $300 million were later removed from the online article. At EA shareholders meeting (thank you TOR Syndicate for the audio) CFO Scott Brown and CEO John Riccitiello debunk the $300 million figure, and say TOR will be released between April and December 2011. Stephen Reid repeats this release date window on the announcements section of the official forums. Suddenly, Spring 2011 feels a little iffy.

Darth Hater's emlaeh talks TOR
AUDIO QUALITY DISCLAIMER: We apologize that the sound quality is not up to our usual standards. In production we discovered a few issues, the worst being a hiss and echo effect. Carla did her best to fix it, but wasn’t able to in every case. These problems are much less noticeable if you listen through your computer speakers rather than headphones.
We snagged emlaeh, Executive Producer of Darth Hater, to join us for our podcast and we found out that emlaeh can go on and on about her hands-on gameplay experiences! It was great fun and we grill her on everything from the beginnings of Darth Hater to how it’s so much fun just to fight things in the game.

Smooth Criminal Haz Orbital Bombardment
Praise the Friday Update gods, they brought us to the Promised Land! After a dry season of no gameplay information, BioWare said unto its fans, “Have faith and you shall have your fill.” But the people hardened their hearts and they cried out into cyberspace, the void of which is terrible deep, magnifying the clatter of voices in endless echoes of dissatisfaction. And lo, just when the night’s gloom was unpierced even by the tiniest spark of hope and most silent, a light blazed across the horizon, and broke the spine of the dark, whining beast. “Behold,” said BioWare, “We bring you glad tidings of great joy! We give you the Imperial Agent, the smoothest of all criminals! We give you PvP and Crafting! We’ll even let you change that Advanced Class name you hated so much.”
And the beast retreated into its place of lurking and the fans were mollified. For now.

Rail Shooter Makes for Unhappy Smuggler
It’s convention season, which means the devs are out there giving interviews, doing panels, whipping the fans up by hinting at wondrous wonders. What will our characters look like? What will they fly? What will they do when they fly? Why should we care about stories that happened 300 years ago? So much to talk about, so many names to mispronounce….
Fact or Fiction? (1:59) Can you pick out the confirmed fact from the tall tales? This week’s host challenge concerns playable races and advanced classes.

We forgot to mention this in the podcast, but Darth Hater had great live blogging columns and pictures from the panel. You can read about Friday's panel here, and Saturday's panel here. (39:15) PAX scheduled for Sep. 3-5 in Seattle Washington. (41:25) Daniel Erickson gave two excellent interviews for Game Informer. The first article, “Storytelling in Star Wars: The Old Republic,” which we only mentioned briefly in the podcast, talks about solo play dovetailing into group play, how hard it will be to play the game against type (i.e. Light Side Sith), and explores important figures in Star Wars lore. Read the full story here. It’s an excellent read. In the second interview, Erickson talks on camera about Revan and Malek, some rather surprising thematic class parallels, and companion characters. (45:17) CORRECTION: Apparently Mako is not the same person as Mayko! Thanks to Xavier for catching this slip and directing us to the correct companion character in the PAX 2009 gameplay demo (15:12). UPDATED CORRECTION: The Mako shown in the PAX demo is spelled "Mako," not "Mayko." She just hadn't been added to Wookiepedia at the time of recording. Curse you, Wookiepedia!

Carla and Kathy argue over the definition of a micro-transaction and find they are on basically on the same side of the fence. End Game worries (45:32) This thread (70+ pages) on the official forums gets the usual mix of freaking out, reasonable response, jumping to conclusions, and, let’s not forget, whining. Our first podcast is done and submitted for your perusal! It’s been a long haul from the first glorious days of let’s-do-a-show innocence to the in-the-trenches reality of forgetting to push the button when you record. It was great fun putting it together – we hope you enjoy it too.
