One of the most common misconceptions about cyber security is that it’s a large business problem. WRONG! Over 40% of small businesses reported hacks in 2021. The truth is, small businesses are extremely vulnerable to cyber-attacks simply because they don’t think they are, or they think they can’t afford proactive cyber security.
In this episode, Ben and I talk about cyber insurance in particular which is a topic many business owners, execs, and boards are navigating. Ben explains what cyber insurance is, and why it's not a solution until itself, we go into what people need to know when they are thinking about cyber insurance and how to make it more likely for cyber insurers to pay out if the worst happens.
Ben’s advice is practical and bite-sized and he’s a really lovely human, which I think helps when you’re a business owner trying to understand and manage cyber risk.

This weeks episode is a keynote I gave at the New Zealand Internet Task Force (NZITF). In this keynote, I discuss the basics of cyber security culture along the following themes:
https://nzitf.org.nz/
On today's episode, I'm interviewed by Anthony McMahon from the IT Psychiatrist on his Biz Btyes Podcast about organisational culture in a digital age and why it's important that we change the way we talk about tech.
We're communicating more than we ever have. The world is getting smaller by the day. All because of Technology. Technology is changing the way we think, lead, and make decisions. And it's no longer for techy people. Anyone with the right skills can take part.
So the mindset and culture we foster have around technology needs to change.
We need to increase our adaptability quotient (AQ) so we can adapt, grow, learn, and get better. Accepting that most of the decisions we make are reversible. If it doesn't work, then stop and try something different.
And we especially need to rethink security - just because we haven't had a breach, doesn't mean we won't.
Because our strongest asset and weakest link are the same thing: People
https://bizbytes.co.nz/
https://theitpsychiatrist.co.nz/
Bruce Hallas has been studying what makes people in an organisation follow security policy and really make it (security) part of their mindset and culture, similar to myself. He is author of ‘Re-thinking the Human Factor’ book & Podcast. And he takes lessons from behavioural science, neuroscience and psychology – ‘what it takes to be human’ and coaches organisations in this through his Security Awareness, Culture and Behaviour framework.
We chat about:
· “If Security was a product would you buy it, and if you bought it, would you buy it again” is a phrase he uses to describe the point that security needs to pick up its game in terms of quality of the product for the audience and marketing of that product.
· How we need to celebrate and encourage good security behaviour as well as chastising bad. We are fixated on behavioural change, but we neglect those complying with policy who may be the vast majority.
· Understanding the objectives of stakeholders and their KPIs so that we can speak in their terms and add value to their dialogue, and
· Design principles that can be used to shape security programmes and nudge human behaviour
Listen in to this conversation with Luke Johnstone, Principal Consultant at Double-O, to find out how you and your team can "Stop starting and start finishing". Beacuse, the more you start doesn't mean the more you finish.
Luke is an outcome-focused, values-driven, commercially astute consultant with significant experience in leading and developing teams, delivering change programmes, business development, and organisation-wide change management.
Luke has spent over 15 years delivering change and leading teams, in a variety of roles. After spending 5 years in a traditional software development environment as a business analyst, and becoming increasingly frustrated with change going wrong, Luke was introduced to Agile and hasn’t looked back.
On his episode we discuss:
Anthony (Ants) has seen the impact a faulty mindset around technology can have on businesses. They don’t operate efficiently, are more vulnerable to risks, staff experience more stress, too much energy is spent on trying to put out fires, their customer service suffers, and they stop focusing on their overall strategy.
Ants is able to cut through the hype and jargon to remove complexities, and demystify technology - he has a knack for analogies as you will hear.
During the show, we discuss why he started his business 'The IT Psychiatrist', why decision making is so hard and the impact of poor decisions, technology as an enabler and how to give people the tools they need to do their job.
Ed Sims is one of my favourite CEO's that I have worked with.
He's an aviation and tourism professional, he has an amazing track record in many countries including Europe, Australia, New Zealand and North America. He's known as a change agent and for the right reasons, because he cares about people as well as business success, he knows the two things are linked.
Ed is extremely open an upfront during our conversation, and I would expect nothing else from him from my interactions from him.
We talk about:
Ed gives so many more tips and advice for organisations and I hope you enjoy this amazing conversation.

In this tell-all interview, Jemma Goodman, who is a Journalism student, gets the goods by asking me great questions to get to the nub of my strengths, development areas, drivers and influencers. I talk about me, not the job and work experience, instead, it's a raw look under the cover of who I am, what has influenced me and what has driven me.
We cover the important topic of 'love' and how it has influenced me and been my greatest strength, surprisingly.
Amy gets a kick out of helping people connect, communicate and get things done. An alternate title I had for this episode was 'Tenacity, passion and purpose' to describe what drives this inspiring woman and her approach to work and life.
She’s an experienced governor with over 25 years being on both commercial and not for profit boards. What's more, she has successfully launched and grown a number of start up's. Turning an idea into a reality, that stands the test of time, is a particular personal strength.
She’s a passionate Cantabrian who is excited about what our city and region can offer to the world and she’s actively involved in working hard to make sure that we are all that we can be through her role at The Christchurch Foundation.
In her spare time, she consults through her company Perception. This includes her governance roles, as well as some project work, predominantly focused on strategy.
In addition to Perception, her husband and Amy own shareholdings to two other consulting SME's (Brannigans and New Zealand Skills in Demand), both based in Christchurch but servicing clients across New Zealand.
Christine Dormaar is the Global CIO of Tait Communications in Christchurch. Christine does what she says she will do, with integrity and passion. She enjoys challenging the norm, working across business areas and delivering business outcomes.
Her experience spans many industry types, with a broad and balanced skillset covering most aspects of information technology, management and leadership. This includes developing technology vision and strategy and translating objectives into deliverable plans.
She believes in clear leadership and actively supporting and enabling her team and those around her to achieve and excel, and enjoy what they do.
Listen to hear Christine's take on leadership in the IT space, about the digital transformation at Tait and a discussion on the future of work.
Chris Hails is a New Zealand based cybersecurity practitioner with the New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) and cyber-psychology researcher seeking to reduce the emotional and financial harms caused by cyber-enabled crime and social engineering.
He is a qualified journalist, project manager and information security professional and is researching an individual’s ‘Security Quotient’ score and behavioural qualities that may pre-dispose internet users to fall victim to socio-technical attacks. His research into the human factors that impact on information security is funded by InternetNZ.

The presence of technology continues to increase in many aspects of our lives and health is no different. Canterbury DHB, in New Zealand, is currently in a period of digital transformation, bringing to life technology and system solutions that support opportunities to improve the patient journey and enhance our clinical and operational effectiveness
Listen in to hear Stella Ward the Chief Digital Officer of the Canterbury DHB speak about her leadership journey and tips of aspiring women, digital transformation in the health sector and how the NZ Health sector is foster innovation enabled by tech.
I first heard Cam Calkoen speak about 'Dream big, achieve more' not even a year ago and I still remember the effect he had on his audience and me.
Many motivational speakers have become so because of a life-changing event - lost limbs in accidents, reformed drug addicts, been in a gang and/or prison, beaten, raped as a child. This inspires them to become change agents through motivational speaking. Cam was born with Cerebral Palsy, his life has been "normal' since birth & would have carried on in whatever direction he chose to take it. The fact that Cam chooses to extend himself-way out of his comfort zone and have done the two things doctors said he would never be able to do, and to a very high level (running & speaking ) means the message he delivers is very powerful and unique.
In a few words "Cam delivers a unique message that inspires people to believe things are possible way beyond their thinking ".
To find out more about Cam, visit his website www.camcalkoen.com or follow him on YouTube, LinkedIn, Instagram and Facebook.
Hilary Walton and Ryan Ashton (best known as Ryan 'the lion' Ashton) from 'A Few Quiet Yarns' discuss people, technology and culture - but not just business culture change. With a mission to co-create a better world for everyone to co-exist the conversation reaches into broader diversity and inclusion as well as the digital divide, the #MeToo movement, and other injustices like child abuse. The main drive of the discussion is to live a more "woke life", a more humane life, one that challenges the status quo when it needs changing.
Ryan also talks about how A Few Quiet Yarns (AFQY) www.afqy.co.nz, the no-selling tech-networking event, has evolved as simply a business idea to connect CIOs and the tech industry to start to change behaviours for positive good. Ryan has so many great stories to take away from this episode - enjoy.
Hilary Walton and Sarah Bowden from Microsoft discuss how to create a digital culture in teams. Sarah's take on it is through personalising experiences through technology to generate fun and belonging. We discuss the importance of prioritizing our health and wellbeing and making it ok for others to do the same. We also discuss supporting people, teams and businesses through enabling technology.
Sarah wanted to share with our listeners a couple of key resources to help them at this time of drastic digital transformation.

Listen in to hear about developing digital behaviours, digital marketing, takeaways for moving to levels 2 and 1 for COVID, and health and wellness implications it's hoped the world will hold onto as we transition yet again into a new normal.
Everything has an origin, a beginning, and here is Digital Culture Ideas' one.
I discuss how I came to start a Digital Culture Ideas podcast and why I think it's such an important topic at this time.
You have to start somewhere, so here it is.
