Although it was against B1G-winless MSU, it sure felt good to be on the right side of a late game comeback win as Iowa comes out on top 20-17 against Sparty on Senior Day in Iowa City. The Hawkeye 4DT guys have plenty to discuss coming out of Saturday's game, but it's better to be talking about 7-4 Iowa Hawkeyes team, Kaden Wetjen's heroics and Mark Gronowski's 4th quarter Superman impression than lamenting a 6-5 team, coming off a terrible loss and heading into the final game of the season in Lincoln, Nebraska. Speaking of Nebraska, Zach and Brian look ahead to Friday and try to predict what new and novel way the Huskers can trip over themselves on the way to another Hawkeye walk-off FG - we all know that Drew Stevens has some recent practice with that!

The script is starting to look familiar as your Iowa Hawkeyes once again come up just short against another top 20 opponent. This time Iowa fell 26-21 to the USC Trojans, after seeing an 11 point halftime lead melt away in rainy Southern California. The Hawkeye 4DT guys convene again this week to talk each other off the ledge as fans are left trying to deal with a once-promising season that now looks eerily similar to the 2010 Hawkeyes, with close losses to good teams. But, despite the losses, the Hawkeyes have three more games, and Brian and Zach give their thoughts heading into Senior Day in Iowa City, as Iowa takes on a struggling Sparty to try and get back in win column in November.

Not much to say other than heartbreak this week as Iowa comes up just short against Oregon, who ripped our hearts out and crushed our CFP dreams with a last second field goal to escape Iowa City with an 18-16 win. The Hawkeye 4DT guys break out the therapy couches for this one as they look back at couldas, wouldas, and shouldas and what might have been. Even with the disappointment coming out of Oregon, it was always going to be a tall task to go out west to take on USC. Brian and Zach finish by looking ahead to taking on another high-flying offense in the Trojans and what it'll take to win one on the road in California!

That Minnesota win was so good that the Hawkeye 4DT guys decided to take their own bye week. Have no fear, this week's episode jumps in the way back time machine (you know, like, 10 days ago) to recap Iowa's 41-3 domination of the Golden Gophers before turning full attention to this week's matchup against Oregon inside Kinnick Stadium. After scoring TDs in all three phases, the Hawkeyes entered the bye week on a roll and looking to get healthy, while the fans spent that time dreaming about some November and Kinnick magic against Puddles and the rest of the Ducks. Brian and Zach provide their 4DT breakdown of the Iowa football squad heading into meaningful November games - while many (most?) Iowa fans left the Hawks' playoff hopes for dead after the Indiana game, with four games left in the 2025 season, the guys look at what it will take for Iowa to finally break into the CFP discussion and find themselves in the 12-team tournament. Yeah, yeah - one game at a time . . . but no harm in dreaming big, right?

Plain and simple, The Gronowski Game - another exciting installment in the PSU / Iowa rivalry, which saw the Iowa Hawkeyes and QB1 run by the Penn State Nittany Lions for a 25-24 win. While far from a perfect outing, the Hawkeye 4DT guys take a look back at a game that saw the Iowa offense come through to gut out a home win after battling back from an 11 point deficit in the second half. Brian and Zach then look ahead at the home matchup against the, surprisingly, 5-2, Minnesota Golden Gophers, who, while inconsistent, are building momentum after a Friday night win over a ranked Nebraska team. Tune in to learn to see what

Turns out, all those push ups didn't do the BADgers any good as your Iowa Hawkeyes doubled-down on their impressive 32 point win in 2024 with an even more impressive encore in 2025, shutting out Wisconsin at Camp Randall for the first time since 1929, with a 37-0 road win! Join the Hawkeye 4DT guys as they return from Las Vegas (a little lighter in the wallet) to break down Iowa's complete dominance in Madison before turning their attention to the new look Penn State Nittany Lions. Brian and Zach break down what to expect from PSU when it comes to Iowa City without its long-term starting QB, Drew Allar, who is injured and out for the season, and without stalwart head coach, James Franklin, who was relieved of his HC duties earlier in the week after not only failing to find a way to win the "big one," but also finding ways to lose multiple "little ones." The only bad part is that the Hawks weren't the ones to show him the door!

After a relaxing bye weekend, in this episode of the Hawkeye 4DT podcast, Brian and Zach get back to it by first talking about some final thoughts on the Indiana loss before offering up their 4DT breakdown heading into Saturday night's match-up against perennial rival and former B1G West foe, the Wisconsin Badgers. These may not be Barry Alvarez's Badgers, coming in at 2-3 and facing a gauntlet of a schedule, but there is always a reason to be concerned when hitting the road for a night game in Camp Randall. Now, excuse the guys, as they go off to do their 42 pushups for today…Go Hawks!!

While it wouldn't have taken a perfect effort from your Iowa Hawkeyes, they did just enough to lose a winnable game against the #11 Indiana Hoosiers, 20-15 (sorry folks who had Indiana -6.5). On this first bye week of the season, the Hawkeye 4DT guys take some time to just look back on a disappointing game that pushed the Hawks to a similarly disappointing 3-2 start of the season. Brian and Zach will look to bounce back next week to provide their 4DT breakdown heading into a road matchup at Wisconsin. But, if you think this episode is going to be all negative, never fear - there is some light at the end of the episode as the guys talk about the latest addition to the Iowa WBB 2026 recruiting class!

One week into the B1G season and your Hawkeyes are 1-0 in the conference, with a new-look shootout win over Rutgers last Friday night! In this week's episode of the Hawkeye 4DT Podcast, Brian and Zach break down a game that didn't look a lot like a typical Iowa performance. The first half saw multiple long drives by Rutgers featuring downfield passing and, at least initially, a floundering Iowa defense. Fortunately, Iowa responded with a resilient offensive effort that saw Iowa mostly match Rutgers' success and trade blows through three quarters. Ultimately, Mark Gronowski and Iowa's offense, helped by the defense securing its first turnover of the year, came through in the clutch to secure a victory. Join the Hawkeye 4DT guys this week as they finally emphasize the offense on second down while providing some more critical words for the defense - what kind of world are we living in?!? Finally, the guys give their thoughts on #11 Indiana Hoosiers, who, early in 2025, have looked prepared to compete for the CFP playoff again as they did with an 11-1 season in 2024.

In this week's episode of the Hawkeye 4DT podcast, Zach and Brian revisit Iowa's final tune-up before B1G play and take time to enjoy the Hawks finally getting something going through the air. The guys start their discussion with a breakdown of Iowa's 47-7 win over UMASS, which saw the offense go vertical early and often - doing what was "right" instead of what was "easy" as Brian had hoped. The guys then look ahead to the Rutgers matchup to get you prepared for a Friday night fight with the Scarlet Knights. Listen to this week's episode to hear what the guys expect to see from the Hawkeyes later this week.

While it wasn't the opening game performance from the offense that we hoped for, it was the opening game performance that we got, which still resulted in a 34-7 week 1 win for your Iowa Hawkeyes! The Hawkeye 4DT guys come to you this week trying not to overreact to a, well, bad QB performance in week 1 that conjured up some of the ghosts of recent lackluster QB performances for your beloved Hawkeyes. Notwithstanding Iowa's inability to get anything going in the passing game, there were certainly some bright spots to discuss - including 300+ yards on the ground and a defense that was pretty stingy after the Great Danes were able to (briefly) take the lead on Saturday. Tune in this week to hear all of Zach's and Brian's reactions to week 1 and their preview of HATE WEEK, as the Hawkeyes travel to Jack Trice to take on the Cyclones in front of a Big Noon Kickoff crowd this coming Saturday.

It is time! Hawkeye 4DT preseason kickoff time that is! As the calendar turns to August, Brian and Zach dust off the podcasting equipment for the start of year 10! Ferentz and Co. decided to make it harder on the guys this year by not releasing the annual summer two-deeps, so the guys go off the usual script and instead look at several of their "Top 3s" heading into this season - including top returners, newcomers, unit groups, and concerns. As is custom, Brian and Zach lead off first with the offense. Is this the year that Tim Lester and the offense finally leads the way?

We wait all year for the next football season, and, just like that, 11 game weeks are past and we are on to the final football Satur . . . er, Friday of the season. Before wrapping up with the final Hawkeye 4DT breakdown of the season, Brian and Zach look back on a 29-13 road win against Maryland, which saw the first start of the Jackson Stratton era, two 100 yard rushers, and a first half offensive production by the Terrapins that clearly had Brian Ferentz’s fingerprints all over it! The guys also tip their caps to a great group of seniors (and maybe a junior or two) getting ready to play their last game in Kinnick on Friday night. After an up and down 2024 season that saw a resurgent offense and a frustratingly inconsistent defense, Brian and Zach look ahead to one final regular season game, as they break down the Black Friday matchup with the (bowl bound) Nebraska Cornhuskers. Will this come down to yet another last second field goal to decide it? Download and listen to see what the Hawkeye 4DT guys are predicting this Black Friday. Go Hawks!

After the great lost Wisconsin recap episode and a bye week following another disappointing road loss, the Hawkeye 4DT guys are finally back! Unfortunately, not as much positivity on the heels of a 20-17 loss in the Rose Bowl to B1G newcomer, UCLA. But that’s not to say there is nothing to talk about - anytime the Hawks are staring down the barrel of starting their fifth string QB, things are bound to get a little weird. Join us this week as the guys break down a wide range of topics before giving their thoughts on the final road game of the season - hopefully we see more Minnesota and less MSU / UCLA this week!

After witnessing some (former) Wildcat on Wildcat violence on Saturday, we are now looking at a new QB1 in Iowa City this week Brendan Sullivan came on in relief of an injured Cade McNamara to lead Iowa to 35 points in just over 15 minutes. Though we never want to see an injury, McNamara's concussion midway through the second quarter gave the Iowa fans what they have been clamoring for all season - an extended look at former Northwestern starting QB, Brendan Sullivan, who, after some early three and outs, seemed to transform Iowa's offense into an unstoppable juggernaut. Well, before everyone gets ahead of ourselves, join Brian and Zach with a look back at what changed with #1 at QB1 against Northwestern in what turned out to be another "fun" Iowa football game, en route to a third 40-point performance from a maddingly inconsistent Iowa football team. While the competition ramps up again when the Wiscon Ric Flairs Badgers come to town, the Hawkeye 4DT guys find some reasons for optimism and renewed interest in a season that won't meet expectations, but could be a glimpse into the future evolution of the Hawkeyes' new look offense.

Well . . . that wasn’t good. After what felt like a corner-turning win against Washington and an another opportunity to add to the Hawkeyes’ season win total, the big goals of the season were severely derailed with a surprising defeat in East Lansing against a dominant Michigan State team. The Hawkeye 4DT guys revisit a total team collapse and try to identify what went wrong in an embarrassing, 32-20 loss in prime time. Plenty of blame to go around, but the guys pinpoint their three primary culprits that caused this defeat. With Northwestern coming to town on Saturday, Zach and Brian take a look at the 3-4 Wildcats and each give their predictions for what is quickly becoming a wildly unpredictable Iowa squad.

So, that’s what it feels like to have fun watching college football?!? This week, the 4DT guys return to discuss a full team, all three phases, four quarter, rude welcoming of new B1G-member, the Washington Huskies. With 40 points scored by the offense, plenty of positives to talk about, including discussions about seven straight scoring drives, comparing RB greats, and analyzing why the Tim Lester seems to be clicking in such a short amount of time (particularly when compared to the struggles faced in 2012). Finally, Brian and Zach turn their attention to the MSU Spartans as the Hawks travel to East Lansing as nearly a touchdown favorite.

Even though it was the result we expected, it doesn’t mean it’s a result we liked. This week, the Hawkeye 4DT guys relive another lackluster performance against one of college football’s blue bloods - this time at the hands of the Buckeyes of the Ohio State. While it’s tough to take too much from a game like this, Brian and Zach nonetheless dive deep into Saturday’s effort and examine it in the context of this season, the past several seasons, and the greater Ferentz era. But, with seven games left, it’s time to focus on the rest of the schedule, starting this week with a home game against one of the newest B1G members, the Washington Huskies, who are flying high after a 10 point win in a 2022 National Championship rematch against Michigan. Now that the bye week is behind us, the Hawkeye 4DT guys get to focus on the #3 Buckeyes in Columbus on Saturday. Unsurprisingly, the guys view this one a little differently, though Brian does bring a little more positivity and optimism than would normally be expected - but there is no doubt that both see a very big challenge against the “best team money can buy.” Will this week be the week that the defense is able to put it all together? Will the passing game get on track? Will Iowa keep it close? Tune in and see what Brian and Zach think before the Hawks get their chance to shock the CFB world.

Floyd is home again and Iowa fans get to enjoy a joyous bye week!! After enduring another slow start, Kaleb Johnson and the running game ground the Gophers into dust with a 17 point outburst in the third quarter, paving the way to a 31-14 blowout in Minneapolis! This week, Brian and Zach take the bye week opportunity to enjoy and recap the Minnesota win and do a deep dive on the first third of the season - focusing a lot of attention on the growth and changes on the offensive side of the ball. While next week’s episode will focus on the coming game against the Ohio State, the Hawkeye 4DT guys couldn’t ignore the chance to start discussing the challenge and opportunity presented by a game against the #3 Buckeyes.

After getting back in the win column, some might say we still don't know a lot about the 2024 Iowa Hawkeyes with more questions than answers so far this season. Is the rushing offense for real? What is with all the big plays against us? Is Kaleb Johnson a Heisman candidate? Can CDJ and Tory Taylor get extra years of eligibility? Can we play a full football game? How much bacon would Floyd yield? After a convincing (on paper) victory over Troy, Iowa opens up the B1G slate with a road trip to Minneapolis to take on PJ and the Gophers - with Brian and Zach in attendance! Tough to say where it all went wrong, but enough went wrong that, after a 13-0 halftime lead, your Hawkeyes ultimately fall to Iowa State, 20-19, on a last second 54 yard field goal. The guys try to work through what they saw - finding significant positives in the day of Kaleb Johnson, but also looking in a lot of other directions for some less positive performances, including quarterback, offensive coordinator, and the defensive backfield. With the Troy Trojans coming to town, Iowa has one more non-conference tune-up before the B1G season gets going - download and listen to see what Brian and Zach will be looking for this week and what they believe that could mean for the rest of the season.

With the standard caveat - “it was just an FCS team” - that Illinois State game was a lot of fun! In what seems like forever, Iowa was efficient and effective on offense, scoring 5 offensive TDS, with 3 TD catches by WRs (matching the WR total from 2023 and exceeding the total from 2022, all in one game) and racking up close to 500 total. yards. As the Hawkeye 4DT guys break down in this week’s podcast, that offensive output was, at least for one week, quite entertaining. Of course, it was game one against an overmatched opponent, so it doesn’t mean there were not areas for concern, including a slow start that saw a penalty-riddled first half only result in 6 points for your Iowa Hawkeyes, before we saw some of those early green chutes come alive in the second half. After looking back at the week 1 results, both for the Hawks and around the B1G, Zach and Brian turn their attention to Iowa State (or, as Brian is fond of saying, “Hate Week”). We all know this in-state rivalry game is always a close affair - what will the 2024 tilt bring for Hawkeyes fans? Hawkeye 4DT - 2024 Offensive Preview The Hawkeye 4DT guys are (finally) back to kick-off another set of pre-season previews as we all count down to the kickoff of the 2024 football season! Starting this year’s previews is the offensive side of the ball. Given this is Iowa football, we all know what to expect from Iowa’s offense - well, that was the case until Brian Ferentz was relieved of his duties and Iowa (finally) hired a new OC, Tim Lester. This year, Brian and Zach start with their reactions to the hire before doing a position-by-position breakdown of Lester’s inaugural offensive campaign. As mentioned (several times during this week’s episode), at least it can’t be worse!

“A chip and a chair . . .” “All it takes is one . . .” “So you’re saying there’s a chance . . .” No matter how you look at it, your Iowa Hawkeyes are decided underdogs as they take on the undefeated and playoff-hopeful Michigan Wolverines in the B1G Championship for the second time in three years. Brian and Zach do a deep dive on Iowa’s best opponent of the year in the biggest game of the year, including what the guys see as Iowa’s potential (narrow) path to victory. But before doing that, Brian and Zach take a look back at Iowa’s quintessential 2023 Black Friday win over the Nebraska Cornhuskers (who won’t be going bowling for the seventh straight season thanks to the Hawks!) as well as revisiting the season generally to try to figure out how, with all the adversity, this team was able to get to that vaunted 10-win level once again. And, finally, what we learned about this team that could provide a small amount of hope for that 11th win in Indianapolis!!

The 2023 Iowa Hawkeyes - where the improbable becomes the probable! The Hawkeye 4DT guys look back on a very 2023 win against the Illini, which also happened to clinch Iowa’s third B1G West crown. That is right, no need to sweat out the final weekend, all we have to do is watch The Game to see who the Hawks will face in Indy. What’s that you say? We still have to play Nebraska? Well, the guys also take a break from celebrating the newest trophy in the case to look ahead to the Black Friday matchup as Iowa looks to push into the rarified air of 10 regular season wins!

So THAT is what is complimentary football looks like. At least for once in 2023, the Hawkeye 4DT guys got to see a complete team win, which was a lot of fun! The guys are able to break out of the Groundhog Day feeling from the prior few weeks and dig in on what they saw against Rutgers, why it was different, and what fans’ expectations should be for the rest of the season. Believe it or not, with the 22-0 win in Kinnick last Saturday, your 2023 Iowa Hawkeyes have already clinched a share of the final B1G West Championship. The key question for the rest of the season - was Saturday a mirage, or have we finally seen the offense start to turn the corner? Join Zach and Brian this week as they discuss that and more (including several references to Indianapolis) in this week’s preview of an important Senior Day tilt against the feisty Illini from Illinois.

Somehow, some way, your 2023 Iowa Hawkeyes just keep on winning - after another lackluster offensive performance, the Hawks nonetheless stood tall after a 53-yard, three-run shot into the basket in right centerfield by Drew Stevens, once again cementing the team's status as the B1G West leader, controlling its own destiny. The guys look back at what we saw on Saturday, which included an appearance from CDJ on offense, Kaleb Brown's first catch as a Hawkeye, and another epic goal line stand from the ever improving defense. It's not always pretty, but at 7-2, the team is tracking toward a consequential final three games, the first of which kicks off Saturday at 2:30 from beautiful Kinnick Stadium against the Scarlet Knights of Rutgers. While Rutgers is usually viewed as an "easy win," with this year's offensive struggles and a feisty team from Piscataway, the guys dive into what we can expect to see as Iowa goes for win #8 on the season. An initial review suggests that the early 28.5 O/U makes a lot of sense as both teams generally struggle on offense and boast very strong defenses. As always, bet the "under"!

Another week, another "off schedule" episode as the guys dive deep this week into the news that Brian Ferentz will not return in 2024. Brian and Zach share their reactions, along with their view on what it means for the rest of the 2023 season and beyond, including what led to the announcement, Kirk Ferentz's future plans, current status of the QB room, and more. As Kirk was quick to remind us all on Tuesday, the Hawks do have a game this week - so the guys also give their preview and predictions on this Saturday's contest against the Northwestern Wildcats, which will take place within the "friendly confines" of Wrigley Field.

Buckle up, Hawkeye fans, this one is not for the faint of heart. While there is typically no Hawkeye 4DT during the bye week, the events of Saturday’s controversial battle for Floyd of Rosedale were enough to bring Brian and Zach together for this special bye week episode. After a lengthy discussion about the best play in Kinnick Stadium history that was absolutely stolen from Cooper DeJean, the guys discuss the one topic upon which everyone who watched the game last Saturday agrees - Iowa’s abysmal offense and it’s ability to continue to find new lows. Indeed, after two prior seasons during which the guys repeatedly stated “it can’t get worse than this . . .,” the Hawkeyes continue to prove the guys wrong. Finally, Brian and Zach share their thoughts on the overall state of the Iowa football program, including changes that they hope to see at the top of the program. This one is not a fun one, but download and see if you agree with the guys’ conclusions about their beloved Hawkeyes.

While the 24th ranked Iowa Hawkeyes are never the prettiest car on the lot, they once again prove the doubters (including your favorite Hawkeye 4DT commentators) wrong with a 15-6 win on the road in windy and rainy Madison (helping at least one of those 4DT commentators cash in on the money-line / under parlay to cap off a nice weekend in Las Vegas). After that improbable B1G West win up at Camp Randall that saw your Iowa Hawks put together a defensive gem and just enough offense to pull off the loser-leaves-town upset over the Wisconsin Badgers, we go from the Bull to the Pig as Iowa takes on Minnesota back in Kinnick. In this game, PJ Fleck will try to beat Iowa for the first time ever and Minnesota will look to pick up its first road win in Iowa City since 1999. While Brian and Zach enjoyed the win and acknowledge the B1G West standings, there were still plenty of things to discuss, including an anemic offense that found just one big play (which was enough to win the game) and another serious injury to one of Iowa’s few remaining offensive skill position standouts. Download and listen this week as the guys look ahead to the contest for Floyd and the rest of the 2023 regular season to see if they believe that 11-1 and another trip to Indy are really on the table.

While Iowa has posted a 5-1 record through the first half of the season, we have all been looking forward to this weekend - the de facto B1G West Championship game at Camp Randall. Before turning to the much anticipated showdown with the Badgers, the guys look back at another (ugly) win against Purdue, which included the best rushing attack of the season, the worst passing performance in four decades, and finding a new way to win a game in 2023. After looking back, Brian and Zach look forward to the Wisconsin matchup - a well-known foe, with a new look approach. Welcome to the Deacon Hill era at Iowa! In this week's episode, the Hawkeye 4DT guys get into the good (Iowa won), the bad (the offense, still), and the ugly (QB1's likely season ending injury). We went into the game against Sparty knowing that we wouldn't be able to make any final conclusions about any offensive progress, but any hope of a smooth progression ended when Cade McNamara went down at the two yard line and didn't get back up under his own power. Brian and Zach discuss that, what they saw from the Deacon Hill- led offense from there, and the excitement of the fourth quarter. Of course, after the last two weeks, positivity is still hard to come by, but, hey, at least there are some second down topics to discuss this week! Check out this week’s episode to see what the guys expect to see when the Boilermakers come to town this upcoming Saturday!

In an episode where there is both nothing to say and plenty to say, the guys get on the therapy couch and talk through Saturday’s embarrassing 31-0 loss in prime time. Brian and Zach discuss both the micro and macro from the loss to Penn State, including what it means to be a fan of Iowa football in 2023 and where to go from here. Please download and listen this week - while this episode is lighter on structure than usual, it includes plenty of emotion and goes deep on many aspects of modern Hawkeye football including the obviously recent lean years on offense, the inability to compete with the top teams in the B1G, and changes the guys hope to see. After two long years, the Iowa offense finally won a game in blowout fashion after cruising to a dominant 41-10 win over Western Michigan. Don’t let the score fool you, though, as it was not always smooth sailing on Saturday and the win came at a great cost as it appeared that Luke Lachey will be lost for the season. Brian and Zach do celebrate the positives this week, in particular an effective and efficient running game that has not been seen in Iowa City for a while, but the guys discuss some of the issues coming out of this weekend’s contest - including Iowa’s slow start and the rash of injuries on offensive side of the ball. Brian and Zach also take a look at Saturday’s prime time matchup at Penn State as conference play starts up - business certainly picks up in a hurry with Iowa taking on a top 10 Nittany Lion squad on the road.

The Cy-Hawk Trophy is back home in Iowa City after a 20-13 Iowa win on the road in Ames! After another fast start and the first defensive score of the season, your Hawks held on to go 2-0 on the young season. It was not always easy on Saturday - join Brian and Zach as they break down what they saw, both the good and the bad and ultimately what gave Iowa the edge to stay unbeaten After that the guys turn their focus toward Saturday’s final non-conference game against Western Michigan, and while there is not as much time spent breaking down the Xs and Os of Saturday’s contest, they do take a bit of trip down memory lane to look at the last time the then-PJ Fleck Broncos came to Iowa City and the good times had by those in the black and gold!

No matter what happens the rest of the season, Hawkeye Fans will always have that first quarter against Utah State. At least that is kind of how it felt by the end of Saturday’s 24-14 win with Cade McNamara sitting on the sidelines while Deacon Hill tried to chuck the ball over the mountains. Of course, while it was easy to overreact to Iowa’s lightning fast start, it was just as easy to overreact to some of the struggles during the week 1 contest. To provide some perspective, Brian and Zach first look around the B1G West to see how Iowa’s 2023 debut stacked up to the rest of West. The Hawkeye 4DT guys then complete their standard weekly breakdown by diving into a few positive takeaways from Saturday and highlighting a couple of areas of concern as the team heads into “Hate Week” against ISU. And just like that, it is finally game week #1 for your 2023 Iowa Hawkeyes! This week, Brian and Zach provide their first “Four Down Territory” breakdown of the season as they look at Iowa’s first opponent of the year - the Aggies of Utah State. Good news is that we are in the “nothing but optimism” stage of the season, but in true Hawkeye 4DT fashion, the guys still find some areas of concern (though not really sure what the issue is, it is 100% clear that our transfer QB will be starting - what’s that, we have two transfer QBs? That certainly muddies the water a bit . . .). This week the guys round out the pre-season shows with their deep dive on the special teams units before handing out the coveted 4DT Pre-Season Awards!

First, on special teams - while we have all grown accustomed to "Punting is Winning" and are hoping that this year "Winning is Winning," it is good to know that there are no camp battles or uncertainty in the place kicking and punting duties with the starters returning 2023, both of whom had very effective 2022 campaigns. The return game, on the other hand, is a bigger question mark…

And no pre-season preview would be complete without the 4DT Pre-Season Awards - always a fan favorite, tune in to see if your picks made the cut this year!

It felt good for Hawkeye 4DT to get back to recording last week and catch up on eight months of topics, including a deep dive on the “new-look” Hawkeye offense. That feeling is even better this week as the topic turns to the defensive side of the ball, which can be described in recent years as "dominant" with little to no hyperbole. Safe to say that Zach and Brian are confident in this year's defensive unit carrying that torch with talent across the starting 11, though you should tune in to see what could cause some concern on that side of the ball as the season approaches. But before diving into the position-by-position breakdown, the guys discuss the news coming out of Kids' Day, including the key topic on everyone's mind - Cade McNamara's health.

After several long months away, Brian and Zach looked at the calendar and realized it was already August and that the 2023 football season was right around the corner. (In hindsight, it should have been obvious with the Twitter “Saturdays to Football” countdowns and B1G media days, but summer in the Midwest is fleeting and can be distracting!). Alas, the Hawkeye 4DT guys are back and ready to talk some football! But not before hitting many of the highlights (and some lowlights) in Iowa sports over the last 8 months. However, do not worry, the annual season preview series kicks off this week, with a deep dive on the group all Iowa fans are hoping to see the most improvement from - the (still Brian Ferentz-led) Iowa offense!

Join us over the coming weeks as Brian and Zach preview the defense and special teams and hand out some preseason hardware before diving into the Hawks’ week 1 opponent - the Utah State Aggies!

Floyd stays home for another year as Iowa goes to frosty Kinnick North and takes care of business on an extra cold day in Minneapolis by beating the Gophers 13-10. The guys break down that result, focus on a couple of stars (one regular on second down and a 2022 newcomer to praise), wonder what happened to a phase on defense that is usually a strength, and start thinking seriously about potentially winning the B1G West. Only Nebraska stands in the Hawkeyes' way to back-to-back B1G West championships (and a date against a B1G blue blood in which Iowa would likely be 20+ point underdogs).

Who needs offense with a defense like that? The guys react to a game that featured another dominating performance from the defense - including a virtuoso performance from do-it-all sophomore, Cooper DeJean who is making a case for best player on the team - and an offensive effort that provided just enough opportunistic firepower to give Iowa a relatively comfortable 24-10 win over those stinking Badgers. With the Hawks sitting (tied for) first place in the B1G West, the guys look at what’s ahead, including a breakdown of this weekend’s battle for Floyd of Rosedale. What a difference a week (and having Northwestern next on the schedule) can make as your Hawkeyes looked, dare we say, good on Saturday en route to a 33-13 win over the Fighting Fitzgeralds. Another week, another disappointing performance from your Hawkeye football team. While we didn’t expect to win against the #2 Ohio State Buckeyes, we expected…something…more than that. Another week, another lackluster offensive effort and disappointing loss - this time to the B1G West leading Illinois Fighting Illini. Though closer, on paper, than the B1G Championship game, the Hawkeyes once again fall to the Michigan Wolverines, this time in a rare loss to a Top 5 team at Kinnick Stadium. We always knew we would put out a new Hawkeye 4DT episode with our reaction to the Nebraska game, but what we didn't know heading into Black Friday was (1) we would be talking about another double digit comeback sparked by a timely special teams play, (2) Michigan would turn The Game into a laugher, and (3) PJ and the Gophers would row Iowa right into Indy. After an entertaining weekend of B1G football, Brian and Zach got together to talk about your (outright) B1G West Division Champions and another trip to the B1G Championship Game to face another team from Michigan - this time against the No. 2 Michigan Wolverines. While not always pretty, the guys talk about how this team could be remembered in the pantheon of KF Iowa teams if they are able to pull off another upset of a Top 5 B1G opponent in prime time. See you all in Indy!

Despite the roller-coaster ride this season, after another ugly B1G West game, your 2021 Hawks sit at 9-2 with a chance for a 10- win regular season. With that backdrop, Zach and Brian try to put the season in context before providing their final regular season 4DT breakdown for 2021. The guys also intended to provide their Nebraska preview, but some breaking news mid-recording forced the guys to re-calibrate their game predictions on the fly. Check out this week's episode to learn whether the Hawkeye 4DT guys expect to see the Hawks leave Lincoln (again) with the Heroes Trophy.

You would not know it looking at the stat sheet, but we once again are here to talk about an Iowa win (or, as Phil Fleck might call it - 1 and 0 in the Minnesota season). Brian and Zach look back at a game that was won on the back of Iowa's revamped offense, featuring players who started the season a bit further down the depth chart - including QB1 Alex Padilla and WRs Keagan Johnson and Chucky Jones. The guys also spend a fair amount of time analyzing the baffling coaching decision regarding our final offensive drive, which started at Minnesota's 3 yard line with a little more than 2 minutes left in the game - not much disagreement between Zach and Brian, but plenty of disagreement with the coaches' approach to that one.

What a difference a "W" and a QB change makes for the psyche of the fan base. What would typically be a boring podcast about a nondescript 17-12 Iowa win on the road at lowly Northwestern turned into a fun debate over what we saw, what that means for Saturday against Minnesota, and the future of Iowa at the QB position. Don't get it wrong, the Hawkeye 4DT guys still had plenty of frustration with "only" a 5 point win over the worst defense in the B1G and we are under no delusions that the offense is fixed.  BUT, Zach and Brian agreed that things, at least for one Saturday, looked a little different.  Time will tell if that was a one-week blip or a new chapter for the Iowa Hawkeyes.

Another week and another very disappointing result for your Iowa Hawkeyes. As you would expect, some concerns and negativity to wade through in all four downs during this week’s episode of the Hawkeye 4DT podcast. But the guys still take some time to look ahead to the Northwestern game. Is the third time the charm for Iowa in its quest to get a first win in the B1G West? Download and listen to see what Brian and Zach expect to see this week against Pat Fitzgerald and the worst rushing defense in the B1G.

Usually, college football teams and fans say “the bye week came at the perfect time…” But, at least for the Hawkeye 4DT guys, that was not the case this season, as this bye week only gave the guys more time to think back on the disappointment from the Purdue game. But, in this week’s episode, the guys try to shake off the Purdue hangover and bounce back, as they hope the Hawks do on Saturday against the ever-tough Wisconsin Badgers. Because Zach and Brian didn’t have a recent game to break down, in this week’s episode they focused on more bigger picture topics than normal. Word of warning, though - skip third down if you don’t want to hear a depressing historically comparable season for the 2021 offense. Luckily, with two elite defenses on display this Saturday, we should be looking at a game where the “under” is a best bet, as both Brian and Zach predict that the first team to 10 will win in this year’s battle for the Heartland Trophy.

You win some and you lose some, but it is never fun to lose in the fashion that your Hawkeyes lost to Purdue on Saturday in a disappointing 24-7 game, which was not even as close as the score suggests. In this week's episode, Brian and Zach skip the typical 4DT breakdown in favor of an extended therapy session as they work through their reactions to the game (good news, Brian felt better after this, even if not 100% optimistic for the rest of the season). Given it is bye week, the guys also handed out some mid-season awards. Enjoy your Saturday off and look forward to next week when the 4DT breakdown returns for the preview of the important B1G West battle with Wisconsin.

Three days later and the Hawkeye 4DT crew is still not sure how to react to one of the biggest wins and amazing comebacks in the Ferentz era. Zach and Brian discuss the many highs and lows of a huge Saturday in Iowa City, as 4DT was on hand to take in all the festivities. Fitting this game into our normal "four downs" proved to be difficult because of the up and down nature of the game, but given the final comeback result, there is a lot more positivity than negativity as the Hawks move to 6-0 and ascend to #2 in the national rankings. The guys look at the special teams, which continue to be special, a suffocating defense and, of course, discuss "that play" and try to project how we will feel about it in the future. Finally, even with all that excitement, there was still some discussion of the upcoming game against Purdue, which has been a thorn in Iowa's side over the past several years

It is always nice when a plan comes together. This week, Iowa's Friday night plan certainly came together as your Iowa Hawkeyes came away with a dominating 51-14 win over the latest trendy team with a hyped QB on Iowa's schedule. In this week's episode, Zach and Brian look back at that game and discuss several areas where Iowa is ahead of the game going into the big game against PSU. You'll also hear the guys discuss why this Saturday's game may be the biggest since 1985 - it is certainly in the running with a few others, such as the 2004 Wisconsin game and the 2015 B1G Championship. That is not to say there are not some continued areas of concern this week, which Zach and Brian break down on third down this week, but needless to say, much more positives than concerns with the #3 ranked, 5-0 Iowa Hawkeyes!

In this week's episode of the Hawkeye 4DT podcast, Zach and Brian focus on the silver linings of a closer-than-expected-but-not-really-that-close 24-14 victory over Colorado State . Even Brian gets in on the action as we once again praise the defense and add Spencer Petras to the list of folks who we believe are playing well (at least better). Don't worry, though, the guys still found some areas of concern for this year's Hawks, which comes from areas that are usually assumed to be strong points for Iowa - the offensive line and the running game. Finally, the guys break down what to expect in the upcoming Friday night road game against the aerial-attack minded, and undefeated, Maryland Terrapins.

Only time will tell whether 2021 will be a special season. However, with one non-conference game left on the scheduled, Brian and Zach find plenty of things to be positive about as they look back at a very successful opening quarter of the season. This week's 4DT breakdown includes continued (deserved) praise of the defense, as well as measured concern relating to the offensive side of the ball. Both Brian and Zach are looking for more offensive consistency this week as they both look for Iowa to win big over Colorado State in a final tune-up before the real B1G conference schedule kicks off.

Due to some scheduling challenges, our 4DT breakdown is a little shorter and less in-depth than usually, but don’t mistake the length of our analysis or how late in the week we are publishing this with a lack of excitement for this Hawkeye team! Any time you get to talk about a Top 5 squad, the excitement is there. This week we dive into our reactions to the huge ISU win and look ahead to Saturday’s tilt with the only team with more 2021 interceptions than your favorite squad. Oh, we also talk some TV wrestling and discuss your new WWE Champion, Big E (aka former Hawkeye defensive lineman Ettore Ewen).

Starting the season 1-0 with a dominating win that propels the Hawks into the top 10 (AP) is a pretty good start. An even better start would be beating the ISU Cyclones in a matchup of top 10 teams in Ames following what is sure to be an excited College GameDay crowd. Join Zach and Brian as they look back at a surprisingly comfortable win over the Indiana Hoosiers and look at what went right and where there is room for improvement. And, of course, the guys look ahead at ISU, give their predictions, and even provide their best bets of the week as 4DT heads west to Las Vegas to take in the Cy-Hawk game in style!

This week, after reviewing the B1G COVID protocols and discussing their thoughts on the "Alliance," Brian and Zach look at special teams to determine whether they will indeed be special this season or if there are areas for concern. In this week's episode, the guys also give out their 2021 annual pre-season awards. After analyzing the defense last week, Zach and Brian are back to do their annual deep-dive analysis of the 2021 Hawkeye offense. And, maybe most importantly, will Spencer Petras take that proverbial step forward. Download and listen to see how the 4DT crew feels about these important questions and more.

It’s good to be back!!  After taking a few months off to ponder the meaning of life and prepare for the 2021 football season, Hawkeye 4DT is back with a new episode.  Zach and Brian start off with some grab bag topics, including the arrival of NIL, the latest on conference realignment, and the highlights (or lack thereof) with Iowa’s 2022 recruiting class so far. The 4DT guys then move on to the main event and kick off their annual preseason shows with a preview of the 2021 Hawkeyes’ defense.  Will this be another dominant Iowa defense or should Iowa fans prepare for a rough ride on the defensive side of the ball this year?  Download and listen to find out!

Wrestling, basketball, and football, oh my! Hawkeye sports don't stop when you don't record a new podcast for the better part of 3 months, so in this new Hawkeye 4DT, Brian and Zach catch up on several months of Hawkeye news, including the basketball season that was, a look back at B1G wrestling and basketball championships, and a preview of March Madness and the upcoming wrestling championships (I think Spencer Lee just scored another takedown and probably pinned the guy . . .). Oh, and since we are a "football podcast," we also catch up on recent changes to the coaching room and preview our 2020 awards with a mini-award ceremony - identifying our Offensive and Defensive MVPs and newcomer of the year award.

Anytime you can beat Bucky, it is a great Saturday, but when you beat Bucky by three scores, it is a Saturday to remember. This week, Brian and Zach look back on an entertaining game that featured a slow first half, explosive offensive plays in the second half, and just enough excitement late in the game (read: questionable plays in the punting game) to keep Hawk fans on the edge of their seats for a game that, looking back, was never really that close. On second down, the guys look at how the Wisconsin win truly was a team win as both the offense and defense were rightly recognized as a whole. On third down, there was a little fun at the punt games expense and ISM's aerials - easy to laugh in hindsight when you win walking away (though we do hope that ISM has a speedy recovery). Finally, and luckily, the guys didn't spend much time on their Michigan breakdown, as the news that the game against the Wolverines was on the brink was breaking during the recording of the podcast. Fortunately, there was still enough good cheer about Iowa football to fill a full episode about your 6-2 Iowa Hawkeyes!

In the immortal words of Ric Flair, "To be the man, you've gotta beat the man!" This week, Brian and Zach talk about the game this weekend again "the man" of the B1G West, the Wisconsin Badgers. But, before diving into that match up, the guys discuss Iowa's 5th win in a row, which cam in dramatic, come-from-behind fashion. Four in a row? Check. Another six game winning streak over a rival? Check. This week, Brian and Zach look back at a not-always-pretty win over Nebraska and focus on the defense, which remains the undisputed lead for the Hawks (just as we predicted in the off-season - don't go check the tapes...) followed closely by the all around great play of the special teams. They also check in on third down for the weekly Spencer Petras watch and speculate what a game might look like if he is required to lead Iowa to a victory before looking ahead to Saturday's tilt against the Illinois Illini. Three blowout wins in a row – that has got to be some kind of record for your Iowa Hawkeyes! In this week’s episode of the Hawkeye 4DT podcast, Brian and Zach look back at Iowa’s 41-21 victory over the PSU Nittany Lions, which included savvy in-game adjustments by Phil Parker and an early front-runner for play of the decade from Daviyon Nixon. The guys focus on the trenches in second down and discuss one of Brian’s favorite plays in third down. The focus shifts in fourth down to what progress we can expect from Spencer Petras for the rest of the year and how the Hawks can continue to rack up big points, even if Petras is not stuffing the box score. After more than 10 months, it was good for the Hawkeye 4DT guys to finally talk about a win! Brian and Zach dive right in this week to Iowa's 49-7 dominating performance against the MSU Spartans.  This game featured a complete, three-phase victory, with the offense, at least for one game, living up to its potential, and the defense and punt return game each adding a TD to the tally. Lots of positivity in second down, but even in the excitement of the win, there are still some concerning trends that the guys look at in the 3rd down. With Week 1 in the books, unfortunately our favorite team is 0-1. But, we are not quite ready to throw out the bath towel after this Week 1 loss - we are able to find some positivity, along with areas for improvement - as we refocus on getting in the win column this weekend against a Northwestern team that had their way on the ground against Maryland on Saturday. Well, Hawkeye fans, the week we have all been waiting for has arrived - week 1 of the 2020 B1G football season is finally here!  In this episode of the Hawkeye 4DT podcast, Zach and Brian do a full 4DT breakdown of Saturday’s game against the Purdue Boilermakers.  Consistent with the thoughts shared in the preseason podcasts, the guys remain bullish on the Hawkeye offense and its ability to score points.  But, the question remains, will that (potentially) high-octane offensive attack score enough points to keep the W’s piling up given the uncertainties that exist on defense and the challenges presented for a football season played with a COVID backdrop?  Download this week’s episode to see how the Hawkeye 4DT guys think this game and the rest of the games on Iowa’s schedule will turn out.

One final podcast before we close out 2019! As we head into the final days of 2019, we pay tribute to Hayden Fry and Bump Elliott, evaluate roster changes with potential NFL decisions and national signing day, take a very brief look at the Nebraska win and upcoming Holiday Bowl. Last but not least, we have our annual accountability, where we give out our post-season awards and look back at our pre-season awards to see where we were right and where we were woefully short (no, we did not have a running back with 1,200 yards or 40 sacks on the season . . .).

A lot of folks predicted 9-3 at the beginning of the season and here we find ourselves one win away from that mark - yet, we still ask ourselves "what if" several times as we look back on an objectively good 2019 campaign, which will only get better with the ninth win this Friday.

Unfortunately, quite a few goals fell off the table in Madison, but we are finding ways to be positive - still a chance for 10 wins, a chance for a better bowl, and - of course - a chance to derail Goldy's special season. Brian and Zach look at what went wrong in Madison and identify what has to change to get back in the win column against a 9-0 Minnesota team coming into Iowa City as a top 10 team (and, no, no typos in that sentence . . .).

We've said it before, but this is probably the biggest game of the season as Iowa faces off with Wisconsin in a loser-leaves-town match for the B1G West title. We spend a couple moments coming off the bye talking about our most recent shutout effort, but that was just Northwestern and their lowly offense. We quickly turn our focus to the Badgers from Madison and theory-craft what coaches may have implemented during the off week. We also look at some young, exciting playmakers, while wondering about a couple of players we expected to hear more from in 2019. Finally, the ongoing discussion of the quality of the Hawkeye defense reaches a crescendo, as Brian and Zach debate whether this defense deserves to be called "elite."

It was not always pretty, but better to be discussing a win rather than a loss. We do look at the positives from the week (including Wisconsin's improbable loss to Illinois); however, question marks remain as your Iowa Hawkeyes look to continue the redemption tour in a positive way as attention turns to the offensively challenged Northwestern Wildcats.

After 2 straight weeks of watching the same (disappointing) game, we are looking forward to getting the Redemption Tour 2.0 back on the rails against the Boilermakers. We look at what went wrong (a lot) and right (not a lot) for your Hawks against PSU, before moving on to this week. 4-2 doesn't have the ring to it 6-0 would, but win this week, and 10 wins is still on the table with a shot at Indy possible.

One loss doesn't ruin a potential special season, but last week's disappointment makes the game against Penn State on Saturday that much more important. As you could guess, a lot of defense talk in second down and a lot of offense (offensive?) talk in third. Bring on the Wolverines! This week we have the pleasure of looking back on a record-setting offensive performance where we have plenty of second down topics and relatively few third-down concerns. Don't worry, Brian is still able to find cause for concern with the defensive line's productivity; however, both Zach and Brian agree that as the competition ratchets up over the next couple of weeks, we will know much more about the 2019 Hawkeyes, including whether the lack of stats along the defensive line is a cause for concern or just an inadequate metric for measuring the defensive line's overall impact on the game.  Let’s get to 5-0 this week and then get ready for a big nighttime showdown in Kinnick!!

It may be bye week, but 4DT still has plenty to say this week. Fortunately for Brian, crow was not on the menu and he was allowed to drag ISU one more time in 2019. Now that we have gotten past the first of five tough road tests, we can put the first quarter of they year behind us, take a deep breath during the bye week, and get ready to take the season one game at a time the rest of way. #GoHawks #Hawkeyes #HawkeyeState

After a looooong layoff, Brian and Zach are back this week to offer up some thoughts on the state of your Iowa Hawkeyes as spring football officially closes. On this episode, we react (and probably overreact) to some spring coach speak, including the “cash” position and other potential new looks on defense and the buzz around a pair of Freshmen WR. For probably the final time, we heap accolades on the best TE tandem in Iowa history. We then examine Iowa's results in the NFL draft and ponder how that might lead to future success for Iowa. Finally, we take a look at the always reliable spring two deeps (read: written in very light pencil) and offer up a "wish list" for what we want to see on the official Week 1 depth chart. As always, the spring leaves us with the hope and optimism of what could be coming, but leaves us with just one burning question - is it August 31 yet?

After a fourth straight Cy-Hawk victory and a second straight home game against the Clones that saw your Hawkeyes give up a mere field goal, Brian and Zach are more than happy to heap praise on the defensive side of the ball; the offense is going to have to pick it up against FCS Northern Iowa this week to get itself back into the “second down” discussion.  The disappointing beginning to the season has the offense firmly in “third down” territory currently. And with the Hawkeyes heading into their final non-conference game, Brian and Zach can’t help but look ahead to the first B1G game of the year with Wisconsin looming. Did you hear that thud? Yes, that was the Iowa Hawkeye offense falling back to Earth. The rollercoaster that is the 2017 Hawkeye Football season continued with an all-time disappointing offensive performance, as Iowa fell to the Wisconsin Badgers 38-14. Brian and Zach look at where they think things went wrong against the No. 5 team in the country after things went so right against the OSU Buckeyes. If anything, this year has taught us that you can’t live in the past. Luckily, Josh Jackson wasn’t living in the past and resting off of his three-interception performance against OSU, as he provided the lone bright spot, contributing not one, but TWO, pick-sixes this week. The guys finally look ahead at what is coming up against Purdue and Nebraska and try to project the rest of the season – but, hey, who really has been able to predict anything about the 2017 season?

Unbelievable would be an understatement! We all knew about the last second FGs to beat Michigan in 2016 and PSU in 2008, and we figured that, if Iowa was going to have a chance to win this game, it would probably take a similar effort. We could not have been more wrong about that. Iowa dominated this game from the first offensive snap for OSU. Well, maybe not from the first play, but after the game was tied up 17-17 (and Brian texted Zach that OSU would be able to score on Iowa at will), Iowa took control of the game and never looked back thanks to aggressive (and uncharacteristically consistent) offensive play and ball-hawking defense. Zach did this show solo and he cannot wait to break this one down with Brian early this coming week!

With OSU coming up, Brian and Zach spend more time focusing in on the next opponent, perhaps more so than any podcast since...Michigan 2016. Are we heading for a repeat? Maybe not, but we can dream. The guys look at the improved downfield passing game and the impressive year of potential First Round NFL draft pick Josh Jackson, before commiserating over the consistently inconsistent offense. Lastly, but maybe most importantly for this week, the important question comes up - no, not "trick-or-treat," but rather "bend or break" in reference to the role of the defense this week against the dynamic OSU offense.

Another week, another disappointing loss for the Hawkeyes, though, in a lot of ways, this one may be harder to stomach. Brian and Zach spend quite a bit of time analyzing how the Hawks can get back on track this week and in the weeks to come.  The running game and the lack of execution on the offensive side of the ball get lots of attention in this episode. Even though the game didn’t go as expected, there were still a few positives to talk about, including another good team defensive effort and the Children’s Hospital wave that is catching on and is one of the bigger stories in college football this season.

Even with a few days to calm down, still tough to look back at the Penn State and not wonder what might have been. Luckily, Brian and Zach are not the ones that play the game as hopefully the team was able to put that disappointment behind them to focus on the trip up to East Lansing to take on Sparty. This week's Four Down Territory Breakdown focuses on the amazing atmosphere at Kinnick Stadium on Saturday night, whether Nate Stanley has the "clutch" gene, how good is Akrum Wadley (particularly at yards after catch - spoiler alert, very good), and what this weekend's game might mean for the rest of the season.

Brian and Zach react to Iowa's 21-19 loss under the lights to Penn State. What a great game, unfortunately, not the outcome we wanted.

The Hawks are undefeated heading into B1G, which is something that we can't say every year! Since Brian wasn't able to join Zach for the RAW reaction, we start this episode with a quick recap of the "disappointing" win over North Texas. This week's 4DT breakdown includes a discussion of Iowa's ability to win in different ways, concerns along the line of scrimmage, and Brian professing his love for a new Iowa RB (we hope Akrum Wadley doesn't get too jealous).

Today's RAW reaction is a bit different as Zach flies solo to give his RAW reaction to Iowa's 31-14 win over the North Texas Mean Green. It wasn't necessarily the "get healthy" win that we were hoping for, particularly with injuries to Wadley, Butler and other key players and the fact that Iowa was down to UNT at the half; but, Iowa ultimately persevered in the second half and turned in a relatively easy win. Zach does his own persevering this week for this RAW reaction, but will be joined by Brian early next week to further analyze this game and preview the Penn State game next week under the lights at Kinnick.

A few days later and the 44-41 OT win in Ames over the Iowa State remains as exciting as it was on Saturday. Brian and Zach breakdown the new (and arguably) improved passing offense and look at where things went wrong with the passing defense that played so well against Wyoming. Though we don't know a lot about North Texas, we do know that they like to pass the ball ... a lot, which we analyze mostly with hope that the added reps will get the defense back on track before opening conference play against Penn State.

Can’t start any better than 1-0! Brian and Zach look at the Wyoming game in more detail after taking a couple of days to digest the dominant defensive performance. They examine what went right this week, who really led the way on the defensive side of the ball, where they expect the offense to go after a shaky start, and what it all means for Rivalry Week (easy for you to say) as the Hawks head into the annual showdown against the Iowa State Cyclones. Also, as Brian and Zach prepare for their annual trip to Las Vegas, they each give their predictions and promise to put their money where their mouth is this week.

After breaking down the 2017 Hawkeye offense last week, Brian and Zach turn their focus to the defensive side of the ball in this episode of the Hawkeye Four Down Territory podcast. While replacing Desmond King and Jaleel Johnson will not be an easy task for the 2017 squad, the guys believe there is a lot to be excited about with this year's defense,  Brian and Zach dive into each unit of the Hawkeye defense, and highlight a few players of particular interest that they hope could have a huge impact on the team defense this year.

After an extended break to enjoy the summer, Brian and Zach finally return to start revving the engine for the upcoming football season, but first, the guys catch up on a few offseason highlights of what has occurred in and around the Hawkeye football program the last couple of months. Brian and Zach then delve into a discussion of what they expect from and hope to see in each unit of the Hawks’ 2017 offense. Spoiler alert – Iowa is not returning a lot of experience at the wide receiver position. But, don’t despair, the guys have several ideas on how the Hawkeyes can deal with that this fall.

Back at it, Brian and Zach discuss the disappointing end to the basketball season and debate what the future holds for the Hawkeye basketball team. But Zach and Brian don't dwell on the hardwood for long, as hope springs eternal because the gridiron Hawks are back on the field with spring practice. The guys discuss the spring two-deeps, the off-season weight gains (good news, Wadley has cracked the 190 threshold!), and their hopes and expectations for the spring season. Last (and probably least), what would an off-season podcast be without a check-in on the WWE, this time with a brief preview of WrestleMania (hosted, in part, by former Iowa defensive tackle, Ettore Ewen a/k/a Big E - so yes, it's Iowa football related-ish).

With the 2017 national signing day in the rear-view mirror, Brian and Zach get together to discuss the 2017 Hawkeye recruiting class. Brian and Zach discuss the impact of A.J. Epenesa (the clear headliner of the class), analyze and break down their personal favorite signees, and project potential sleepers from the class. They also debate the other big topic of the week - the (re)hiring of Ken O'Keefe as the new QB coach. It looks as though what is old is new again in Iowa City. You will also hear live score updates from Iowa's 81-70 basketball victory over the Cornhuskers. Last, but certainly not least, with a hat tip to the Go Iowa Awesome guys, Brian and Zach give their thoughts on this year's WWE Royal Rumble pay-per-view!

After healing their wounds for almost a month following the Outback Bowl, Brian and Zach return to offer up their thoughts on Greg Davis' "retirement" (spoiler alert: Brian is happy), the hiring of Brian Ferentz as his replacement, and other coaching changes on the horizon. Brian and Zach also discuss some player personnel changes, highlighted by a discussion of the return of Akrum Wadley (spoiler alert: Zach is even more bullish than Brian on Wadley in 2017 - how is that possible?).

Four Downs of Big Plays! Brian and Zach discuss the quick-strike offense that overwhelmed the Cornhuskers on Black (and Gold) Friday and reflect on an 8-4 season that was at various times disappointing, underwhelming, and exciting. Brian and Zach look at what is coming back in 2017 and get into a heated discussion about who will be missed more – CJB or Desmond King (but they both agree that Jaleel Johnson will be the biggest loss, both in stature and position of need). Thanks for sticking with the 4DT podcast this season, but there is also breaking news this episode that the guys expect to be back for another season next year, as well as throughout the offseason.
