Sometimes this person might be a local artist, some other time the person can be the mayor of one of our towns. Today I had the please of talking to a life long Caleciano, amazing photographer, author and returning guest, Jimmy Dorantes. Recently Jimmy was selected to write the 2nd part of Calexico's book, the first book focused on the 1900 to 1929 and Jimmy is tasked on writing from 1930 to 1969. The last two weeks Jimmy has been meeting at the Carmen Durazo Cultural Arts Center with local residents listening to stories and collecting artifacts to include on this book. He will no longer meet at the cultural arts center but he will meet with you in person if you have any stories or items you would like to share and maybe be part of the book give Jimmy a call or send him a text at 619-368-4486 or send him an email at jimmy.dorantes@gmail.com

If you grew up in the 90's and early 2000's here in Calexico you probably remember the name TacoMex. The Arellano's and their food have been a staple in our community since 1992 when they first opened TacoMex. For most people who are in the restaurant business they know that owning a restaurant is a family affair and most of the time the younger members of the family end up hating it and don't see it as a future career, but not for Martin Arellano Jr. After being away for a while and running 3 successful food trucks in the San Antonio area he's come back to help his parents with Birria Red but only with one condition, if they let him bring back TacoMex to life and after having a successful soft open this past weekend the future looks bright for this new TacoMex era!

Although he's in the early process of research and the writing of his book I learned a lot from some our local shops and local personalities.

Today I had the pleasure of talking to a fellow Caleciano, podcaster, beer drinker and Brand Ambassador for Ballast Point Brewing Co., my guest today was Jeff Lozano. After living in SD for quite a while Jeff has temporarily come down to the Imperial Valley, specifically Calexico. We talked about what his experience was like growing up in Calexico, especially in the punk rock era/trasher era. Jeff also shared with me what made him fall in love with the small brewery/craft scene/bar and how he ended up working for Ballast Point. Today I had the pleasure of having a meal, drinking some chai and having a conversation with Angel Esparza. Many of you might know Angel as the creator of Mi Calexico or as a former Calexico City Council candidate or as one of the organizers for one of the many Calexico Art Walks. Angel is now working on a new project and he's hoping he can get some help from our community. During the pandemic Angel got really into drinking and making his own Chai tea and now he's hoping to open a space where people can come in and enjoy a healthy meal and drinks but also come in and learn, create and collaborate.

Today I had the pleasure of visiting the Comite Civico Del Valle headquarters and talk to two people that wear many hats at Comite but one of the most important roles they play is as the coordinators of the Salton Sea Outreach Program Mr Richard Brown and Ms Fernanda Vega. One of the biggest reasons I wanted to meet with Fernanda and Richard was to hear about their upcoming community workshop on April 20th to get an overview of the recently released 2023 Annual Report and learn about projects underway and current planning efforts.

Today I had the pleasure of meeting the new director for the ICHS Pioneers Museum Mrs Caitlin Chavez. A lot of us from the Imperial Valley might have seen the Pioneers Museum on our way to IVC or whenever we take Aten road but we ask ourselves, "I wonder what's inside?" And let me tell you there's a lot of amazing displays showcasing animals from our area to actual buildings that are part of the Imperial Valley's history. Director Chavez and her small staff do an amazing job at preserving and maintaining ICHS Pioneers Museum and I really hope that the next time you are in the area you stop by and learn more about what's inside and even outside.

Today I had the pleasure of meeting and talking to Imperial Valley College President Dr. Lennor Johnson. We talked about some of the amazing accomplishments our local community college has accomplished, like being on the top 10 list of ASPEN list. But Dr Johnson was here to talk and promote a measure that's on the November ballot, Measure B. If passed they hope to bring in close to $130 million dollars to expand it's facilities to be able to train our local students in lithium, and also train more fire fighter, police officers, paramedics, and emergency medical technicians to name a few.

This is her 2nd time running for city council, back in 2020 she ran for the 1st time and she was amazed of how well her campaign did despite being in the middle of the pandemic. She feels that this time around she can do a much better job now that she can go out and talk to the community in person.

Today I had the pleasure of talking to hard working stay at home mom who left a successful professional career to spend more time with her son Mathew who is in the autism spectrum. After leaving the workforce she has spent her spare time advocating for all children with autism. She spent a lot of her time living in the outskirts of Westmorland but has recently moved into town and this has make her realized the needs for some of the families in her community. She hopes having a seat in the Candidate for Westmorland Union Elementary School Board will help her be a bigger help to those in need in her community.

Today I had the please of sitting down and having a chat with the Mayor for the City of El Centro and now candidate for re election for El Centro city council, Mr Tomas Oliva. Tomas ran for city council a couple of times and lost and then in 2018 he was elected for city council and is now at the tailed of his first term. He feels that with the knowledge he acquired in his first term as a city council member he now has more to offer to the residents of El Centro and he hopes to be re elected this November.

Ms Colio Warren shared with me what motivated her to get to where she is now and what she hopes to accomplish has Calexico's new city manager. Growing up, believe it or not, I wanted to be a QB I used to watch Dan Marino and then John Elway and locally Butch was someone who I looked up. Today I had the pleasure of talking to former Calexico City council member and now Imperial County board of supervisor for district 1, Mr Jesus "Cachu" Escobar. Growing up in Calexico, politics wasn't something Mr Escobar aspire to do. As he grew older and started a family he felt there was a lot of needs for Calexico/Imperial Valley residents so he decided to run for Calexico City Council. He soon found out that he could do a lot more as a member of the board of supervisors. Mr Escobar talked to us about issues he's constituents are dealing with currently and plans for the future.

Today I had the pleasure of talking to the founder and CEO of Best S.T.E.P Forward, Ms Jacqueline Riddell. As a coach and mother she felt there was a huge need for sports leagues for special needs kids and their parents. Being a coach she soon after started a soccer team for kids with special needs and started looking for other kids who wanted to play with her kids and it just snowballed from there. My guest today are two Imperial Valley natives who wrote and illustrated a children's book to bring awareness on the near extinction of a beautiful creature who lives very near to us, the vaquita. Although the vaquita wasn't discovered until 1958 it only took a little over 60 years for humans to bring it to the brink of extinction. Ruben and Sheyla hope that with this children's book they can bring awareness to this issue and inspired kids to save not only the vaquita but other endangered species out there. Sheyla and Ruben have started a Kickstarted to help them fund the publishing of their book, they plan on donating some of their copies to libraries in our area.

Today I had the pleasure of visiting this place a lot of us who live in the Imperial Valley or people just driving through the valley whether going up the hill or coming down we see this place located right smack in the middle of interstate 8 and highway 98, the Imperial Valley Desert Museum. This was my first time visiting the museum, I walked around a learned a lot about the Imperial Valley and the indigenous people who lived here way before we did. I then had the chance to talk to Kristin O'Lear ( lead curator ) and Luis Landeros ( Education Coordinator ) we talked about the museums exhibits, events and how they had to adjust during the pandemic. One thing I noticed while talking to both Kristin and Luis is that they love their job and have a passion for educating our community or anyone who visits the museum about the valley's history and they also have a huge respect to the indigenous people from our area and their traditions!

Charlie grew up in Calexico and he was a Calexico Unified School District student and it was here where his love for writing started. Today I had the pleasure of talking to a returning guest, he's a fellow podcaster, city council member for the city of Brawley and a US Marine Veteran. I met Ramon back in December of 2019 to talk about a Podcast he and his fellow veterans Ernie and Raymond had started. They wanted to talk about issues veterans were dealing with, during one of their episodes they had the opportunity to go down to Tijuana and meet with some deported veterans. While down there they befriended a veteran named Erazmo Apocada, a couple of days after he was notified he was able to apply for his citizenship he was found dead in his backyard. This motivated Ramon to do something about this issue and while walking the annual memorial day walk he decided he would walk the entire length of the Mexico/US border to bring awareness to deported veterans.

Today I had the opportunity to sit down and chat with a life long Calexico resident, educator and two time city council member who is running for his third. We talked a little bit about his history in Calexico as a citizen and also being involved in Calexico's educational system. Due to the fact that he's currently part of the city council we were able to talk about some of the issues affecting out community and get some of his thoughts on some of the decisions or hold backs the city and the council has been part of. Today's guest is one of the candidates for the El Centro Elementary School District School Board, Andrew Arevalo. Besides being a candidate Andrew is also a 4th teacher at McCabe Elementary, he has a long history of educators in his family, he's taught for 6 years and in 2019 he was named CUE's Emerging Teacher of the Year. These are just some of the things Andrew has been able to accomplish in his short 6 years of teaching, but something I noticed was that he's always thinking on how help out his students. Besides talking about some of his accomplishments we also talked about what are some of his goals if elected and why he's the right candidate. In today's episode I had the opportunity to talk to Carlos R Hernandez, he's an El Centro native he's also a teacher at Sunflower Elementary in El Centro. Carlos is running for the short term position at the Centro Union High School School board. Although Carlos is only 32 years old he's had a lot of experience in both public and private education, he's taught kindergarten all the way to high school and continuation students . We talked about his experiences in education and why he took the chance of running for Centro Union High School School board. He's also really into technology and incorporating it into the classroom. Today I had the opportunity to talk to Henry Liera one of the founding members of Valle Vota, a non-partisan organization leading the Imperial Valley to the voting booth. We talked about some of the numbers and data when it comes to voter turnout in the Imperial Valley and the importance of going out to vote and being involved when it comes to local elected officials and local propositions. It's really encouraging to see our youth getting involved on something like this, it's a no-brainer, people should go out and vote but yet they don't and this young generation is working really hard to encourage our community to go out and vote.

Today I had the opportunity to talk to Venus Nguyen who is a Family Nurse Practitioner at Vo Medical Center and Martha Singh who is a board member and treasurer for Vo Neighborhood Medical. Vo Medical has been part of the valley for the last 10 years but since the pandemic they've stepped up to the plate with testing and treating those infected with COVID-19 in our community. Not only are they testing and treating out community they are also feeding them so they won't have to go out and interact with other. Venus and Martha shared with me some things they are doing a long with their volunteers to help our community stay safe and healthy. Venus also shared some tips on how to stay safe this fall season.

For today's episode I had the opportunity to talk to the president for the board of supervisors for the Imperial County, Mr Luis Plancarte. Mr Plancarte is at the tail end of his 1st term as a board member for the Imperial County board of supervisors where he represents the second district of Imperial county. The 2nd district covers a large part of El Centro, portions west of Calexico and the communities of Heber, Ocotillo, Nomirage, Coyote Wells, Yuha Basin and Painted Gorge. Mr Plancarte and I spoke about what it's like being on the board of supervisors during a pandemic, how the state has helped the county during this pandemic, renters moratoriums and the up coming elections.

Today I had a quick chat with two 2019 Calexico High graduates, my friends Zammantha Avina and Mariela Padilla. I wanted to see how their transition from High School to University was and how it changed due to the pandemic. Zammantha and Mariela also wanted to let any 2020 graduate know that if they any questions about going away to college/university and they can't reach a counselor at their new school they are more than willing to answer any questions as best as they can.

In Episode 71 we have a returning guest ... Mayor Bill Hodge. In this episode I wanted to focus on the expansion of Heber park. For those of you who don't know #Calexico was awarded $8.5 million from the state to expand Heber park. Despite the fact that this is something positive for our city some in a our community were and are still worried that these funds are going to be misused and the project won't be completed. I am one of those who is worried that we won't see this project get finalized and I hope that my conversation with the mayor can help ease the concerns we have.

Today I had the please of visiting the Imperial Valley LGBTQ Resource center and I met up with Brianna Jaime-Bruner, who is a volunteer and facilitator at the resource center. Brianna is in charge of one of the Mental Illness Support Groups and Brianna brings something special to the groups she manages, she also suffers from a mental illness and she can relate and feel relatable to people who suffer from mental illness that sometimes feel people don't understand what they're going through. The Imperial Valley LGBTQ Center is open to everyone and they offer all kinds of services group counseling, one on one counseling, free HIV testing and just a place to hang out and meet some real friendly people!!

Today's guest is Christopher Gomez Wong. I invited Chris to be a guest on the podcast because I wanted him to promote Calexico Farmer's market, Chris has been a huge part of Calexico's Farmers Market since day 1 and he's been doing this as a volunteer for the past 6 years. This is one of the many things Chris does for our community ... for the youth in our community. He is also the advisor for the Calexico High School Eco-Garden Club, where he also volunteers his time, Chris shows our students how to grow and maintain a small garden of an assortment of vegetables and spices that are then used by the culinary class at Calexico High. For his day job Chris works for University of California Cooperative Extension, where he works with groups in our community that fall under the SNAP-Ed program one of the most interesting parts of his job and the part he hope Calexico teachers can take advantage of is where comes in and helps teachers and students work on a small garden, teach them PE activities and also talk about healthy eating choices. Today's guest is Calexico city manager Mr David Dale. This was my first time meeting Mr Dale and to be honest I was kinda nervous. A city manager is a very essential part of our city, I believe that he or she is more important than a city council member or a mayor. He's in charge of making sure that day to day operations of our city are running smoothly and he or she is also in charge of making sure all the policies and regulations our city council pass are implemented efficiently and effectively. Mr Dale has a lot of experience to take on this position but I think Calexico is a different monster and I think so far he's taken the punches well. I can honestly see a brighter future for Calexico at the helm.

Today I had the opportunity to sit down and chat with Calexico High School's new athletic director Ms Lorena Rodriguez. I really wanted Lorena to stop by because I feel that an AD is an essential part of our community and mostly our students because we are here to educate them weather it's math, English, science, sportsmanship, responsibility and respect and I feel like Lorena has the background and experience in education and coaching to transmit this to our students and parents alike. A great point that Lorena made was that kids playing sports in high school are "student athletes" and sometimes we leave out the "student" part. I really wanted our community to put a face to our new AD because I feel she can and will do a great job and we need to support her in any way possible!!
