Understanding the four quadrants of dog training can help you improve your pup's behavior! Here's a mini cheatsheet 👇

Definitions

What is Reinforcement? Simply increasing the rate of that behavior occurring.

What is Punishment? Simply decreasing the rate of that behavior occurring.

What is Positive? When we say positive, we mean that we are adding something into our dog's environment

What is Negative? When we say negative, we mean that we are taking something away from our dog's environment.

The Four Quadrants of Dog Training

Positive Reinforcement (R+): Adding something (desirable) to increase the likelihood of that behavior occurring.

Negative Reinforcement (R-): Taking away something (undesirable) to increase the likelihood of that behavior occurring.

Positive Punishment (P+): Adding something (undesirable) to decrease the likelihood of that behavior occurring.

Negative Punishment (P-): You take away something (desirable) to decrease the likelihood of that behavior occurring.

Although your dog's recall will take lots of training and practice, these 5 tips will speed up your dog's learning.

5 Tips for Teaching Recall

  1. Start inside, on a leash

  2. Use a long lead outside

  3. Reward every time

  4. Set up difficult situations before they happen

  5. When you think the behavior is learned, keep practicing
