Released on what would have been his 81st birthday, this transmission has stories and music from the late, great Scottish Jazz Saxophonist, Bobby Wellins. Bobby takes us from the Glasgow of his birth to the Big Bands of the 1950s, his residency at Ronnie Scott’s Jazz club in the 1960s, through his non-playing years of addiction to his return to regular recording and performing for the last 40 years of his life.

THE CITY NOT THE CITY is a radio and film documentary about artists who live and create in unique and unconventional homes: in self-builds, shacks, boats, barges and caravans, and the remarkable histories of these environments. The film looks at the draw of the city and its margins. For the project, blues, folk and experimental musicians, including Jazz legend Bobby Wellins, created performances on the edges of a Brighton that may, at first, appear unrecognisable.
A second show sourced from Brighton & Hove charity shops. 60 minutes of crackle, skip and wax warp from the sounds of cheesy listening to film soundtracks, gospel hollering, Glaswegian Funk and spooky girl guide folk; Crooners, Divas, Kazoo blowers, scatting classicists, risque nightclub comediennes, beatmakers, folksingers, Calypso Kings and Disco pioneers. All donated, rejected and tossed aside by the good people of Brighton and Hove.
