My guest on this episode, Aliza Hava, is an award-winning singer/songwriter whose music explores the deepest levels of love, life, and the power of positive social change.
After college, she began performing at and co-producing concerts at the United Nations headquarters in NYC. She earned a position as Chair of the UN International Day of Peace NGO Music Committee and went on to produce live concerts on six continents in partnership with over forty civic society, governmental, and environmental organizations.
While living part-time in the Middle East, Aliza represented UN-related peacebuilding initiatives and worked with Israeli and Palestinian musicians to promote peace and dialogue through music. She went on to produce the internationally live-streamed concert, Harmony in the Holy Land. This extraordinary event united Muslim, Christian, and Jewish musicians in a universal, musical prayer for peace from the heart of Jerusalem. Watching Palestinians and Israelis meet as strangers and part ways as friends, Aliza felt the reaffirmation of her calling to build bridges through the healing power of music.
Featured on the soundtrack of Sharon Stone’s award-winning documentary, Femme: Women Healing the World, which also features performances by Annie Lennox, Yoko Ono, and Rickie Lee Jones, Aliza is a recipient of the Human Spirit Award presented by the international organization Talent for Humanity.
Aliza’s New Album “Into The Light” is coming out soon. Produced by multi-platinum Grammy-winner Mikal Blue, the album features ten songs that take the listener on a soulful journey from darkness, “Into the Light.”

I’m excited to be re-releasing this episode with our youngest Daughter of Change to date - Rosie – from the popular Go Rosie Grow show. Rosie is an amazing eight-year-old from Detroit Michigan who uses her talents to shine a light on historical black figures and icons.
Since we spoke in March of 2023, big things have been happening for Rosie and her family's team of talented women known as “The Big 3” - a nod to their hometown auto industry. This trio of Daughters of Change includes Rosie, her sister A’Blesyn, and her mom Kenya Faye.
Late last Fall, Rosie was discovered by Oprah, and her Instagram account has soared to over 100,000 followers.
When Niecy Nash, well-known actor, and television host, caught wind of Rosie reenacting the famous table scene from The Color Purple – playing all the character's roles may I add – she sent it along to Oprah.
Oprah was wowed! She reached out to Rosie and invited the Big 3 to come to the Los Angeles Premier of the remake of The Color Purple and walk the purple carpet with her.
While Rosie is the star of the show, her big sister A’Blesyn is the mastermind behind the camera who directs, films, and edits all Rosie’s videos. Her mom Kenya Faye creates the wardrobe magic and chooses the scenes.

Stephanie Emery is a Lifetime Member of the Girl Scouts and the owner of Adventure Bus -an affordable way for like-minded people from all over to get together, get outside, see the world, and have fun with nature.
Originally from West Paris, Maine, Stephanie spent her summers at Girl Scouts of Maine’s Camp Pondicherry where her mother was the nurse. Her days were filled with hiking, swimming, canoeing, and various outdoor adventures. It was here that she learned essential survival and leadership skills she puts into use today.
After college, Stephanie started a private teaching studio in Boston, giving lessons on flute, recorder, saxophone, and clarinet. Although she found the job extremely rewarding, the outdoors came knocking.
In the summer of 2002, Stephanie took a two-week tour called the Best of the National Parks with a company called Adventure Bus that would turn out to be a life-changing experience.
Hoping to spend the school year teaching, and summers on the Adventure Bus, Stephanie went on multiple tours, aiming to convince the owner that she would be an asset to the company. Little did she know that a year later, she would become the owner!
Fast forward to 2023 and Stephanie has been the owner of Adventure Bus for twenty years! She has created countless new trips from Arizona to Alaska and back to her home state of Maine. She is very proud and thankful of the extended family Adventure Bus has become.
Today, Stephanie and I will be exploring her path from Camp Pondicherry to the owner of an outdoor adventure company – and how the two ventures are unequivocally intertwined.

There are many layers to liberation from domestic abuse. Each person’s path is different and complex.
Through the work of the Maine Coalition to End Domestic Violence, and its member Domestic Violence Resource Centers, survivors receive a comprehensive array of support and resources. DVRC advocates work closely with survivors to develop safety plans and reduce barriers that stand in the way of achieving safety.
One program, The Liberation Fund, complements these services, enabling advocates to help in immediate and practical ways. This can be a key component of a survivor’s ability to enact their safety plan and establish freedom. Since 2020, more than 1300 survivors across Maine have benefited from the Liberation Fund.
Many survivors who leave an abusive partner do so without the basic necessities that will allow them to provide for themselves and their children, such as clothing, food, and personal documents. Starting over can be further complicated when a survivor does not have furniture, appliances, or other items that help make a new house become a home. The Liberation Fund provides for these personal needs, offering survivors and their children immediate relief and support.
Today I will be talking with Francine Garland Stark, the Executive Director of the Maine Coalition to End Domestic Violence, Missy, and Maggie who have generously agreed to share the personal stories of their journey to liberation.

I initially interviewed today’s honorary Daughter of Change, Greg Lathrop, for the Never Been Old B4 podcast. As we delved into our conversation, I realized that this intriguing subject would appeal to all of you.
Greg Lathrop is licensed as a Registered Nurse. At age 15, he experienced what he thought would be the moment of his immediate death. The transpersonal, mystical state of being he experienced transformed his perspective of consciousness and guided his choices regarding his “work” in this life. Accordingly, his more than 40 years of nursing experience has included serving within various healthcare realms: acute care, critical care, emergency care, air-medical transport, hospice, and integrative healthcare. Coinciding with his nursing practice, he was invited into a Traditional Indigenous Medicine apprenticeship, following his Teacher Will Rockingbear for more than 13 years until Rockingbear's crossing. He is now recognized as a Medicine Elder in the Way of Traditional Healing.
We hope that you enjoy this sneak peek of the Never Been Old B4 Podcast.

Today’s Daughter of Change is 20-year-old Halle Roy.
Born in and raised in Maine, Halle is currently getting ready for her second year at Southern Maine Community College where she is studying fire science and is part of a live-in program. Students accepted into the “live in” program live in area fire-EMS stations in exchange for being “on call” during specific hours. They have additional responsibilities and must provide their own meals. Live-in students complete fire+ EMS basic training and are paid for their emergency responses. The Live-In Program requires a high level of motivation and responsibility.
Halle says -throughout my first year, I obtained my fire one and two and my EMT license. My father and stepfather are both firefighters so I found the same passion as them and I couldn’t be happier. I have a little sister who also wants to be a firefighter paramedic one day, so being able to go through it as a woman in the fire service, I can lead her in the right direction. I hope that I can be a voice for other females who are interested in this career or really are just scared to put themselves out there because I was that same person.

Once upon a time, people’s perception of Girl Scouts was of girls singing around campfires, earning badges, and selling cookies. That is no longer the case! While girl scouts still do participate in these activities, they are also learning leadership skills to help with their careers.
On top of that, financial literacy is a component of girl scouting that aims to help girls develop confidence in money matters.so they can learn to make sound financial decisions and develop a healthy relationship with money.
That’s why we thought it would be fun and educational to combine both of these topics and do a podcast focused on careers in the banking industry.

Alums say being Girl Scouts set them on a path to achievement, connected them to something bigger than themselves, and helped them develop their passions and interests.
That is definitely the case with today’s Daughter of Change, Rachel LeGloahec. Rachel is a Maine native, a graduate of The Culinary Institute of America, and a Food Networks Chopped Winner who has been cooking professionally for over 17 years! She is also a Girl Scout of Maine Alumn who currently owns and operates two successful businesses.
A leader in her industry, she attributes Girl Scouts with giving her opportunities she wouldn’t otherwise have had. Adaptable and resourceful, Rachel has learned to reinvent herself and redefine the meaning of success as she blazes her own trails in a career that is also her passion.

Today’s Daughter of Change, Marilyn Laken, is a woman who was ahead of her time in a male-dominated world - and with grit, determination, and a strategic mind - rose through the ranks of medical academia.
After earning a BSN from the University of Md and a master’s degree from Boston University in Maternal/Child Health Nursing.Marilyn, who enjoyed asking questions and experimenting with more effective ways to provide health care, decided to get a doctorate in biological anthropology to pursue an academic career with an emphasis on research.
Health equity has always been a passion for Marilyn, so most of her academic work focused on how to improve access to quality health care for vulnerable populations such as low-income pregnant women and children, and members of the AME Church.
This required working with state and national government agencies and Congress on laws and health policies to improve access to care and with professional organizations on changes in practice guidelines to better meet the needs of vulnerable women and children.
Marilyn retired after working for 52 years and is now focused on learning more about the needs of aging people and identifying ways to reduce isolation and stimulate our brains.
I’m excited to have the opportunity to converse with this wise woman who has helped to pave the way for the women who came after her.

Resilient, Ready, and Strong! These words describe today’s guest and Daughter of Change, Morgan. Morgan is a member of the Girl Scouts of Maine. At the ripe old age of 14, she is already honing her leadership skills and focusing in on her ambitions.
What I loved most about talking to Morgan was hearing how she has learned new things about herself and the world, even when things don’t go exactly as planned.
When Juliette Gordon Low started the Girl Scouts in 1912, she brought girls together so they could explore new possibilities and the wonders of the world around them—and she wanted them to do it together. As I got to know Morgan, I realized that over a century later, these tenants still hold true.
Thanks for joining us to learn more about this young woman and the incredible things she has already accomplished.

How do we create awareness of our own biases so we can examine them and how they impact our interactions and decision-making processes in the business world? This is the question we will be examining with today’s guest and Daughter of Change, Ellen Miller.
Ellen Miller is a pioneer in today's world. Like many women, her rise to prominent roles in male-dominated organizations has been a lifelong pursuit of blazing new trails, encountering setbacks, and achieving success.
However, during the majority of her career, she was a change agent operating on cognitive autopilot, taking on information from her environment, making decisions based on her perceptions, and carrying the weight of corporate responsibility squarely on her shoulders.
By 2017, after 25 years in the energy industry, Ellen left her executive role with an internationally owned company and began a new pioneering journey that changed her life. She now educates leaders on the benefit of cultivating greater cognitive awareness and relational intelligence and the importance of embracing a growth mindset for oneself for the benefit of others. She shares her pioneering stories and mindset insights with people across the United States as a Speaker and Leadership Coach.

The Girl Scout Leadership Experience is a research-based, theoretical model that describes what girls do in Girl Scouts, who they do it with, how they do it, and how they will benefit from their participation.
During Passion to Action, we talk to the girls and the adults who support them about their participation in the Girls Scouts, how they’ve grown from it, and why it means so much to them. However, we haven’t broken down the actual model used by the organization.
Today we will do just that with our special guest and Daughter of Change, Mara Moorhead.
Mara is the new Leader/CEO of the Girl Scouts of Maine. Born and raised in Portland, Maine, Mara graduated from Deering High School. She has BA in Poli -Sci from Wellesley College and an MSW from UNH.
Mara worked with teens and was the Clinical Director at a group home for adolescent girls in Dover, NH. Although she hasn’t practiced in years, she says that she uses her social work skills every day!
She also ran her own baked goods company, where she created a bean boot cookie for L.L. Bean.
Mara has been in the nonprofit world for a decade and is excited about her new career with the Girl Scouts of Maine which allows her to play a role in helping thousands of young girls and young women find and use their voices to become leaders.

Meet Daughter of Change, Amanda Young, a Mental Health Advocate, Author and Podcast Host whose personal mission is to help eliminate the stigma of brain illnesses by educating people about what depression, anxiety, posttraumatic stress and bipolar actually are. She starts important conversations on her social media platforms and podcast by encouraging others to speak up and seek help. Amanda is a firm believer that her brain health conditions and her unique voice are her superpowers. The ability to feel in extremes gives her empathy not everyone has – allowing her to continue helping others find their voice.
At the end of 2020, Amanda made one of the hardest decisions to date and walked away from a career she’d spent her entire life working to achieve. She was experiencing unimaginable levels of burnout, and compassion fatigue and was barely surviving… it broke her heart, but she knew that she had to prioritize herself and her mental health if she wanted to be a better human, friend, wife, daughter, or sister… let alone run a developing brand she’d created, full-time. Through this process, she was able to find that her identity WASN’T just in being an animal trainer; She had so much to offer the world and it was time she focused on herself to begin sharing that voice.

Daughter of Change, Sarah Stacey, is personally redefining what it means to have anxiety. To quote Sarah, "I have anxiety, I am not anxiety". Sarah is sharing her story in the hopes of helping others realize that anxiety is not one-dimensional. It's something that you have, it does not define who you are.
This is also an epic day on the Daughters of Change Podcast because Sarah is our very own podcast editor. I’m very happy to have the opportunity to interview Sarah. She is an integral part of Daughters of Change, and a dream to work with. I know you’ll be as amazed by her as I am.
Sarah has been battling anxiety almost her entire life and finally sought help at age 29 when the COVID pandemic brought everything sharply into focus. Many years ago, Juliette Gordon Low said, “We must accept the fact that transport and communications will bring the world in close relations and the youth of the world should have standards and ideals in common.”
Those prophetic words ring true today with the Girl Scouts travel program. From the field trips taken as Brownies to the global adventures they go on as teens, Girl Scouts can explore different places and cultures while learning about the world.
Girls can experience all that our country has to offer, whether they’re “blasting off” at Space Camp in Alabama, taking in a Broadway show in New York City, or visiting the birthplace of Girl Scouts’ founder, Juliette Gordon Low, in Savannah, Georgia. And they can plan even bigger adventures around the world, traveling with other Girl Scouts who share their love of adventure.
Today we’ll be hearing all about these travel opportunities and the benefits they offer from Girl Scout of Maine volunteer and Travel Coordinator, Shannon Johnson, and world traveler Girl Scout, Greta Smallidge.

She is a graduate of the University of Maine with a double major in Journalism and Broadcasting, has been a member of Rotary Club, Kiwanis Club, Association of Fundraising Professionals, and National Association of Charitable Gift Planners,

Loretta has been at JASMYN since Fall 2018 when she moved to Northeast Florida from Maine for some sunshine already.

Episode Notes In this episode of the Passion to Action Series we explore the Girl Scouts Junior Maine Guide Program at Camp Natarswi and discover the determination and skills required for Girl Scouts to earn their JMG certification. You meet Tree, Vicky and Delaney and learn how The Junior Maine Guide program helps develop our future women leaders through determination, skills, challenges, and lifelong friendships.
Established in 1937 by the Maine State Legislature, the program promotes the use of the Maine wilderness for recreation and environmentally responsible land use practices. Unique to Maine, the Junior Maine Guide program is offered at only ten camps in the state. Girl Scouts have been earning their JMG certifications for nearly 90 years!
Offered to youth ages 9-18, the progressive curriculum of more than fifteen skillsets teaches campers to be self-reliant and cultivate a respect for the environment. JMGs learn how to take a leading role in safe, fun, and leave-no-trace trip planning, and master such skills as: axemanship, canoeing, shelter and fire building, map making and identification skills, equipment planning, food preparation, first aid, tree identification, wilderness regulations and more.
Today I’ll be talking with Treasa Wheeler (all so known as Tree),Camp Natarswi Director for the Girl Scouts of Maine, and two Girl Scout, Camp Natarswi JMG alums - Vicky and Delaney. We’ll dig into what the program requires, the skills these young women have mastered, both personal and outdoor, the bonds that are developed through this program. and the young girl leaders who are blossoming as a result.

Ramona is a survivor of childhood sexual abuse and domestic violence. She strives to create an environment where exploitation of children and domestic violence are not tolerated. Like so many young girls who have experienced sexual abuse, Ramona found herself involved in the juvenile justice system and ultimately the Dept. of Corrections at the age of 27.
She inspires women to step outside of their comfort zones and do “that thing” they really love - the very thing they were told they could not do! She is passionate about women re-entering the community successfully after incarceration and restoring the family unit.
Ramona herself has done what they said she couldn't!
For the last 6 years, Ramona has excelled in the field of construction, exceeding the expectations of many, including herself.
She started her career as part of the labor crew on trash detail, becoming a superintendent who has worked on numerous commercial projects. This led to her role as Superintendent in residential construction – building both semi-custom and fully-custom homes from the ground up.
Through various platforms such as women's ministries, women’s groups, panels, and conferences; Ramona empowers women to live their best lives after abuse, trauma and incarceration.
At the heart of things, Ramona wants to encourage others through her story of transformation; essentially how God guided and molded her for the life she lives today.

-Robert E. Lane, Prof. Emeritus of Political Science, Yale University: "I have known Wolf Richards for more than 40 years, and have always been impressed by his skill and wisdom in interpersonal relations. He has an intuitive understanding of other people's feelings and of their efforts to cope with the problems that confront them. In my opinion Mr. Richards' grasp of Confucian principles will give depth to his approach to conflict resolution. He is an excellent speaker and a fine person."

At that time (1983-1987) the Division employed 20,000 staff (10,000 of whom were teachers) serving 114,000 students. The stress the other major managers and I experienced, often on a daily basis, was sometimes nearly unbearable. However, I was able not only to survive, but to succeed by any measure, with the support I experienced from Wolf's philosophic precepts."
-Tabitha King, author and wife of author Steven King: "Dear Wolf, First, let me thank you for letting me see your manuscript [The Way to See (W)hole®]. I know from speaking with you how dear this project is to your heart... The manuscript is heartfelt and mindful. I very much enjoyed your word play, which lightens what could be turgid. The message is coherent and seamless... It has been a pleasure to meet and converse with you, and a pleasure to encounter your good and poetic soul in its strivings... I wish you the greatest success with this project."

Marie Sola sits down with Kathrine Vilnrotter, practitioner of the Human Givens Approach and a Wayfinder at Syntropy, where she helps people heal through this process.
From Kathrerine's Syntropy profile:
I have a diverse professional background with careers in architecture, international community development, international development finance consulting, construction management and building energy auditing over the past 10 years. This diverse background provides me with a deep understanding of a variety of types of organizations and people and their independent and co-functioning.
While people have always been the focus of my interests, my professional trajectory took a sharp turn in 2011 when I experienced a severe personal trauma and suffered through full blown PTSD for several years. My journey through the healing process allowed me to develop a deep and personal relationship with a variety of tools that helped me regain my center. Among these healing tools were yoga, meditation, reiki, physical fitness and nutrition, the mind-body connection, and most profoundly – psychoeducation, understanding my own brain.
The act of learning about brain functioning to understand my experiences with PTSD was empowering to me on several levels. It not only helped me understand what I was feeling physically in my body, emotionally and mentally, but it gave me the tools to manipulate those same brain mechanisms to achieve desired results in my professional and personal lives. I am extremely passionate about sharing the tools that helped me heal and thrive with as many people as possible.
