Pregnancy should never mean a loss of self. Sadly, autonomy is swept under the rug for 9-12 months or longer in favor of a “healthy baby” and an unhealthy or imbalanced parent. Keeping the host alive is a bit dramatic, but the sentiments are the same.
It is imperative that we keep ownership of our bodies, even while pregnant and that we can maintain the ability to supplement with cannabis.
The reality is:
All of these realities can make you feel powerless in the arms of the law. Thankfully there are some laws and regulations in place to protect patients who are parents, and information available to the public on how to navigate them.
If you are a parent and you are in a medical state, your medical card is a necessity, not a luxury. You need to walk within the realm of law on this one. The card protects your possession of medicines and legitimizes its presence in your home.
Where you keep your stash is important. Most states have guidelines as to where your meds can be when you have minors living in the home. Your stash can’t be in a Tupperware on the table anymore! Neither can your rigs, glass pieces, or tools. When introducing children into a cannabis-friendly family, safety and security is no different than other prescription medications. Lockboxes with codes instead of keys are available on amazon. High shelves and simple medicating techniques are key to successful stoner parenting, IMO
2a: on this note, CLEAN use is the ultimate sign of a successful pot parent. Clean tools and a clean medicating station shows responsibility and keeps clutter and sticky residue under control. Clean your regularly used items weekly or bi-weekly depending on your use and organize your medication station every 3-4 weeks.
Don’t be terrified by state child protective agencies. I tell my clients that if they are able to show an agent that their home is just a home that has cannabis in it, then they have nothing to worry about! Imagine state agencies doing investigations over sage or paprika. For many canna friendly homes, the presence of cannabis isn’t the spotlight of the house. Their family photos, pets, and decor define these homes. There is warmth, love, and cannabis there. It’s simply an additional medicine in the cabinet as it’s been for hundreds of years. If your case managers are easy to work with, showing them successful, responsible canna parenting provides them with field experience into what real child abuse would look like. Be willing to work with agents, within reason, and don’t be scared to consult an attorney for advice.
Mindful micro-dosing is a way of medicating in a consistent manner with low doses of cannabis. This can be done via vaporizers, capsules, tinctures, or other edibles. This method is not only discrete, it cuts down on the timely ritual involved with traditional medicating methods. For many, micro-dosing allows for a steady, almost time-released experience that maintains a balance day and night.
It’s okay to yield. Some people aren’t ready to be at the front lines of this battle. Stigma is a powerful social manipulator and can influence even the best and strongest of us into submission. That is okay!
Not every cannabis user will want to be an example.
You may live in a state where the odds just aren't in your favor for fair treatment. Your family's safety is always front and center! Take comfort in your choices because they are rightfully yours. Every person is different in this journey, don’t let others convictions cloud your personal judgment.
A great question with many answers depending on your identities and walks of life. I believe that at the core of what makes us a community is our ability to find commonality with others where once there was none. Occasionally great relationships are forged during this process.
Our inability to see the commonalities between communal intersections is where we get off track. Cannabis is a widely used herb by everyone on planet earth. The stigma will literally knock those numbers on their asses because people wouldn't DARE disclose use in some parts of the world.
If you take a step back and you look at how a community runs, it's obviously got to have an economic market. When the market goes white, it's hard to correct and create a diversely colored identity spectrum. A spectrum in which people can get in where they fit in.
The money is what matters in this fresh new cannabis frontier! How the money gets your 1/8th in your hand is important and understanding why it's important to deconstruct that is the focus of episode 1 of The CannaDoula Podcast
