Over the years cameras have improved and they have added features that make life as an outdoor content creator much easier and in most cases better. We didn't know what to talk about, so we just kind of spit balled this one. Topics covered (generally) are what Ryer has been doing to better himself professionally, namely reading books, subscribing to magazines, and intaking knowledge from industry pros. Caleb talks about the show he just finished (West Wing) and how Aaron Sorkin uses writing so efficiently to plant seeds, pull threads, and develop characters.
In this business we have a term for a hike in to a location for a hunting trip. Generally they are 2-3 days into an elk hunt that is not going as well as we hoped and we want to get into more elk or something of that nature. I have a had a few of them on Turkey hunts too. When you take off with camera rig and a heavy pack in a general direction with an unknown destination for an unknown amount of time, those normally qualify as a death march. Ryer and Joe just got back from the Death March of all Death Marches. British Columbia Canada is a different animal and when you are there for Moutain goat, key word being "Moutain" its going to have several elements of suck involved. Ryer in particular found the suck. I told Ryer before he left this was either going to be the best trip he has ever been on or the worst. Special thanks to Bergara Rifles for letting us tag along on such an epic adventure. This is going to be a good podcast.

Josh is a producer from NC who has been working on video production ever since college. He is one of the few guys that has been to college for video and film production. It is a quick one today. We're talking double shooting. More specifically, some tips and tricks that we have found to help us when we are double shooting!
Starting a business and making it great is one of the things that brings me a ton of joy. Hearing an awesome story about how a company started with Zero and is now all the way to Hero makes it even better. Tom Kubiniec from Secure It has one of those stories. He started with tape racks and now he is one of the world leaders in gun storage for the military and civilians. Tom was bold and talked the talk but also walked the walk. We talk about everything from guitars to servers to guns to hunting and a lot in between. Lots to learn on this podcast. The main point being how important decentralized storage for your firearms can be.
Logan Start is one of those guys that cannot be introduced in one or two sentences. He was a scout sniper in the Marines, he has been at BRCC pretty much since the beginning and has had a hand in building the content juggernaut ever sense. He was responsible for almost ever piece of content that came out of BRCC for years. He has helped create the persona that is Black Rifle that we all know and love.

Too many times I have heard my friends tell me they want to go hunting with me, so I ask them to go and they sway they cannot for a thousand different reasons. Everyone has those same excuses. Stop letting life get in the way of living.

Since starting Redneck Tech podcast and starting to gain a following we naturally get questions as well as comments on what we do and how we do it. That is what we created this platform for. Most of the time they are great questions about how to do something or how to improve what someone is already doing. Occasionally though we get the question...what settings do you use to shoot a certain scenario, or what program did you do that with, or some kind of leading question that insinuates we have to be hiding something. This was such a fun podcast. We didnt take a lot of time to plan just some buddies hanging out and talking about learning and growing in this crazy industry we work in. Freelancing in the outdoor space is very common but its not easy. There are defiantly some tip and tricks to doing it but just like any other gig there is no secret on how and why some freelance guys are successful and why others aren't. We love media in all forms, and in this podcast we go over the recent works in various forms of media that have made an impact on in some way. They have either inspired us, made us think, or given us an idea. We get off the rails towards the end of this podcast but it was fun.
Cinema Rig vs. DSLR/Mirrorless. The ultimate debate. With companies packing more & more punch into smaller packages, why are we still choosing bugger, heavier, more expensive cinema rigs? The short answer: convenience & ease of use. Now, before anyone gets it twisted, we are not saying that you can’t create amazing looking content on a DSLR/Mirrorless. You can. Any camera is a tool, & we are the biggest believers in the old saying “It is the Indian, not the arrow”, however, when shooting video, a dedicated cinema rig seems to us to produce the same results quicker, & with less hassle. The main reasons for this is that you don’t need to rig them out, you have all the components & connections you need right on the body, you have dedicated physical controls for camera functions, lots of customize-ability & shooting options, built in features like ND’s, they are easier to use handheld, & they typically have file formats that are easier to work with in post, & also generally have better color depth. They are more expensive, but that is worth the cost to us. Convenience & time saved is beyond valuable to our operation. Call us old fashioned, or behind the times, but we are still choosing a big cinema camera over a DSLR/mirrorless rig for our video work 95% of the time.
On that note, those of you who prefer to shoot on a DSLR/Mirrorless, what are your reasons? Why do you like them more than the bigger rigs? Let us know!
As most of you know we have been working with John Dudley or as we like to call him, Dud for about 3 or so years now. He has been an incredible client and more importantly a friend to all of at Copeland Creative. I wanted to get him sat down and talk about his perspective on outdoor content creation, the various platforms where he has content as well as how things in the outdoor content game have changes over time. We get to learn about how he got into filming his hunts and some of how he got to where he is today. Most importantly we put a challenge out there to you content creators who want to get into this business full time. Dud has been telling me he needs someone full time in Iowa for content creation for over 2 years. We just don't have the time and being located in GA it just isn't feasible to fly back and forth all the time. He needs someone full time in house and we are going to help him find that person. This is going to be a full time position with pay based on experience. Applicants need to know their way around a video and photo camera as well as how to edit and use the Adobe Creative Cloud Suite of programs. This is a very subjective podcast. We have editing for a long time and these are some of the things we have learned. Editing is something that is fairly technical. Anyone can edit but editing is much more than just knowing how to use the program. Knowing codecs, frame rates, export settings, computer hardware and software are all important in video editing along with a lot of other factors that I am sure we are forgetting. Its way more than just throwing footage in a timeline and start cutting.

Clint is a good friend to the Copeland Creative and the Redneck Tech Crew. He has been doing some freelance work for us in the last few weeks so we finally had a day to sit down and talk with him about his life and some of the things he has learned being a freelance in the outdoor space.
Ryer, Clay and Caleb have been hard at it already this fall. With 4 hints and trips under their belt Caleb and Ryer sit down (well they are driving 11 hours) to talk about what has happened and what we have gotten done so far. Ryer also goes over his new flying system for traveling on hunts.

We just got back from our first trip of the 2020 fall in Utah. Caleb and Clay were both with Wild Country Outfitters outside of Ogden, Utah for a spot and stalk early season velvet mule deer hunt. - These are all essential things that will help you make better content.
- Knowing how to use light (natural night)
- This is a big one and this is also one that will take practice but the light build will click for you one day and you will understand what is good and bad lighting.
- Learn how to shape or move light to where you want or need it (Bounce)
- Understand how you camera deals with good and bad light.
- Some cameras deal with harsh shadows better than other, for the most part just know the middle of the day looks like crap on camera.
- Shoot most of your video in the first hour or light or the last hour of light.
- If you have to shoot in the middle of the day find the biggest shaded area you can
- Overcast days are great too.
- Always have a safety
- Learn how to use a safety angle.
- What is a safety angle
- This is super important if you are filming by yourself or self filming
- POV cameras are the best for this.
- There are a ton of ways to get creative with these as well.

5 Reasons Why Your Videos Suck (Editing Edition)
- You use too many transitions
- You use too many montages
- You Can’t edit to the beat/music
- You don’t know how to trim the fat
- You don’t know how to hide your edits
- You are jump cutting, not using angles, B roll, etc…
- Ties into previous point.
- L Cuts (audio continues past visual clip cut)
- J Cuts, Audio comes in before visual clip starts)
- B Roll (Cover cuts with B Roll, rule of thumb, at least 2-3 broll clips back to back)
- Bonus Your Audio is bad
- It is too loud, too quiet, I cannot hear someone talking, it pops when you cut, wind noise is excessive, music is overpowering, no audio (even with music)
- This is the number one thing most viewers will struggle to tolerate
- MONITOR YOUR AUDIO
- Watch for peaking/clipping
- Set dialogue to -9-12db, music to -10db and 10 less when someone is talking, sound effects present, but in background
- Mixing sound should be part of your editing process, use headphones and then check on monster.
- Use crossfades on audio clips to smooth out pops on cuts
- Clean ambient audio will save you
I talk to guys all the time that are not happy about how their videos turn out after they are done with them and they reach out to me see why. Here are some reasons why I think your videos suck....
- You do not know how to properly run your camera with the right settings
- Flip it to auto and run and gun (this will never end well0
- At the very least learn to run your camera with manual focus but we recommend full manual
- You do not understand how to frame things
- You dont understand how to frame….
- People
- animals
- motion
- multiple people
- cut aways
- emotion
- wide shots
- tight shots
- angles
- You aren’t producing the talking or getting any talking at all
- This is something that a lot of the “bigger” productions dont do well and it isn’t hard
- Formulate talking on camera that is conducive to editing
- Clean starts and stops
- clean sentences
- not too long
- sound bytes are your friend
- re-create if you have to
- talk to the camera every chance you get.
- You don’t pay attention to audio
- Ambient is important
- background noise during talking is important
- Get a wireless mic for the love of God.
- Monitor your audio for the love of God
- You are more worried about hunting than filming
- This will always result in sub par video
- Filming the hunt and the experience and the weather have to be the forefront of everything you do
- You have to make a decision on what kind of content you want to get.

Jacob Satterfield is a long time friend of Redneck Tech Podcast and he has got a really cool perspective on not only the hunting side of production but also a really good grip on the west coast, big production aspect of this world. Storytelling is a subject that most people feel is hard to talk about or hard to explain. I do not feel that way. I think it is simple. I have talked about it time and time again in short form. Who, what, when, where, why, and weather. Beginning, middle, and end. Establishing shots, and transition shots. Those are the basics and if you know how to be creative while filling these boxes you are going to be successful.
On this episode I have two of the members of the 8th and Tine crew on to tell a story about a really poorly executed deer hunt from their early velvet season in Tennessee. Grant and Austin go into detail about all the things that went wrong on this hunt and we all put our heads together to talk through how we can prevent this from happening again as well as what all we learned from it.
Several months ago I was looking for someone to help me on a project and I was needing someone who could shoot and edit. I put out on add on the facebook page "Outdoor Filming Professionals" and I got several guys that wanted to be considered. The problem was none of them had a Production Reel showing me they knew how to do anything. Just because you have a camera and know how to roll video on it doesn't mean someone is going to hire you. You are going to need a way to showcase your work. There are several key elements to creating a good reel so here are my thoughts on it.

I put a lot of miles on my Tundra every year. I love my truck. I love having my stuff and my gear. Knowing where everything is, knowing what I have with me and knowing its dependable and I can make moves at the drop of a hat is worth it to me. On this episode I got into some detail on why I drive everywhere as well as try and stay awake on a really long drive through Houston, Texas.

While listening to the "Cleared Hot" Podcast put on by Andy Stumpf he talked about DO THE HARD THING. He was talking in terms of life and how doing the hard things in life are always the better way to success and being an example. I wanted to talk about the same subject but in terms of Creating Content and doing what we do. There are tons of shortcuts you can take in this line of work but none will get you the result you are wanting. Generally by cutting corners you or more importantly your client isn't going to be happy. Do it right the first time.
Well the turkey tour for me is about to begin, well I guess it already has. I just got back from South Florida for the opener with Darrell Madden and Chris Irwin documenting Darrell's 38th and 39th Grand Slam start. We ran into a few hiccups since Darrell has never filmed any of his hunts so I wanted to use this podcast to go over how to properly set up for filming turkeys for the footage and not the kill. These are two very different things and Darrell soon learned that. Filming a turkey and getting the right footage for a show or film is a lot more involved than just getting one in close enough to kill with a shotgun. There is a process in which you must follow and be committed to or its not going to get you what you are wanting or needing. The set up needs to be the main goal, not just killing a bird. Commit to getting epic footage and dont take anything less. Enjoy.
Just got finished with a shoot in South Florida where I was filming some content for Mossberg shotguns and my buddy Chris Irwin was running the still camera. It was so good to get to be in camp with him again and get to work together on another project now that both of us are out on our own and getting to do what we love more and more. We finally got a little break the last night before we drove home to sit down and get a little more in depth on photography. I got to watch Chris work a lot on this trip and see what makes him tick. Pricing and how to price a job or yourself is hard sometimes. Essentially you are selling yourself and I am not good at selling myself. What it all comes down to is how much time is this going to take to complete. I try and outline just how I go about my process of pricing. Its not revolutionary at all but here it is!!
Got a message the other day wanting some of the camera functions explained. I wanted to go over all the buttons and basic functions of most prosumer cameras that are out there today but not only talk about what the functions are but how they work and also how they work together. By understanding these functions and their meaning you can use them to manipulate your image to achieve a certain look or feel. This is when you get to be creative.
I am finally getting to nail down a time and date for my production class. Its going to be in July from the 13 to the 15 in Nashville, Tennessee. The fundamental question we all need to ask ourselves when we are in the field creating content, no matter what it is for, is are we a camera man, or are we a producer. There is a huge difference between the two. Trust me, you want to be a producer, not a cameraman. I have had several influences in my career but none stand out more as an awesome person and mentor like Chris Irwin. Chris was a staff photographer for Bass Pro Shops for over 26 years. He has been to more places and taken more pictures than most will in 10 lifetimes. He is a true veteran but even more than that, he is just a good dude. We got a little carried away and ended up talking a lot longer than we intended but I think it was worth it. As you know there are a ton of outdoor TV and web shows. All of these shows for the most part are trying to get sponsor dollars from the same handful of companies. These companies only have so much to go around. The hardest part sometimes for a new show is "what questions to ask" or "how do I approach a potential sponsor". For the marketing perspective I sit down with one of my favorite people in this business, Andy Campbell. It's show season and I am at the ATA Trade Show in Indianapolis. Its always fun to come to this show for me because these are my people. In this episode I try and answer this question. There is not one for sure way to get a job and the way I got one was very different than most. Getting a job in this business is believe it or not easier than it used to be. The industry is a lot bigger and there are a few things you can do to help your odds.
When you are out on a hunt and filming and videoing sometimes for days and weeks you are going to have to dump that footage somewhere and organize it. This podcast goes over my process of doing that and also how I back up and store that media since it can't be duplicated if I were to lose it.

Well this whole Podcast thing is new to me. I am a content and media creator to the core on the video side. This audio only thing was weird to get started so I thought I would use this first one to explain who I am and what my goals for this podcast are. #1 I am going to do my very best to get current industry info to the other guys out there that are trying to create content or get a job or just get better. Second thing I want to do is hear from you. I want to know what info you are hungry for. What are the questions you as asking and not getting the answer to. Lastly I am wanting to get some of my buddies on here and let them tell their perspectives on this crazy business. I hope this is a platform for knowledge and learning for everyone involved.
