Legacy through Motherhood: Recent Episodes

Stephanie Sims

The Legacy through Motherhood podcast has a basic mission of generational change. We will be having conversations that center around 5 main topics: Faith, Finances, Health, Mindset and Marriage. Some of us are fortunate enough to have exemplary role models in one or more of these areas, while others are not.

When it comes to these topics, I think we all share the same desire to see our children succeed, especially in areas we struggle with- but how? How do we teach them to be successful in areas we haven't figured out for ourselves? How do we model, teach, train and equip our children to succeed when we do not have an accessible role model for marriage, healthy finances or whatever it might be? How do we make the time to intentionally leave the legacy that we want to leave for our children? How do we break strongholds and generational cycles when we still feel the weight and challenges of them?

This podcast will be full of practical ideas, empowering stories, guest speakers, biblical and scientific proof behind different topics, resource recommendations, and so much more. My promise to you is to help you find your grit as a mama while covering you in grace. Would you join me as we learn how to leave the legacy that we WANT to leave for our children? We WILL do this by challenging ourselves and by ultimately passing our knowledge onto our children.

I can't wait to continue this conversation! And girl, don’t forget as you go into this day, whatever goal you are pursuing or whatever area you are struggling with - you are already enough.

Episode Synopsis: Women, Wealth & World Change with Allie Casazza

This episode is going to shift how you think about money! 💰

Stephanie sits down with Allie Casazza (NYT Best Selling Author) to talk about something we don't discuss enough - women and wealth, and how the two together can literally change the world.

The Real Talk:

Money isn't the enemy. It's actually a tool - and when it's in the hands of women who know their worth and purpose, incredible things happen. But here's what's holding us back: debt. It's keeping us chained, self-focused, and unable to step into the abundance that could create real change.

What You Need to Know:

  • Money is amoral - it's not good or bad, it's what you DO with it that matters
  • Debt is paralyzing - it's literally one of the biggest attacks on our freedom and potential
  • Women are changing the wealth game - we're 62% more likely than men to prioritize societal causes over just accumulating more money
  • Freedom from debt = freedom to choose - and that's where world change begins

The Bottom Line:

It's not about hoarding money. It's about serving people, making money, then using that money to create the change you want to see in the world. And it's time we normalize wealth for women who want to make a difference!

Perfect for: Women ready to change their money mindset, anyone stuck in debt, dreamers who want to make a bigger impact

Perfectionism, this hot mess mom culture we live in, mom guilt, so much good stuff. I hope you guys enjoyed this conversation today as much as I did and felt like it resonated with you in some way. The world needs more of these honest conversations between women and moms so we can truly understand each other where we actually are, and not where some hot mess mom culture tells us we should be. Conversations like the one I just had with Kendra where she talked about feeling guilty that she DIDN’T have mom guilt for focusing on her business… or the one last week with Dr. Heather Rhodes on low libido, stress, and exhaustion. Obviously, not every convo should be public...but I think there’s power in shining a light on some of these struggles on a platform where everyone can hear.

So first thing is first... us parents are just doing the absolute best that we can. But with that lens of good intentions comes the responsibility to ask ourselves if the ways we are parenting are really serving our children or if we just regurgitating the parenting we grew up around? The parenting we grew up around could have been positive or negative. Some of it could have helped and some could have hindered. And here's the deal - you are going to help and hinder your children and you are also gonna have positive parenting traits and negative. There is zero way to be a perfect parent. But there are a million ways to become a little better than yesterday. That's what this very practical conversation with Rachel is about today. It is human and primal to want to help our children (and ourselves) avoid painful experiences...but often we do that through distracting (here's a popsicle, or let's turn on Blue's Clues!) or we avoid (Don't let them climb the tree, or ride a bike without training wheels until they are like 15). Neither have a negative intention but when we parent by teaching avoidance and distraction that becomes how we deal with difficult situations as adults (because we don't know any better) In this episode, we talk through SUPER easy and practical ways to help our children THROUGH tough situations (from babies through teenage years and even for adults).

In this episode, Stephanie sits down to talk with her mom about the difference between making good choices and having good choices to make. We talked about the episode on privilege a lot in this episode - https://simsarrows.com/captivate-podcast/ep-74-the-12-different-types-of-privilege-and-why-stories-matter/ (Listen to that episode here.) Quote read in this episode on Listening: Documentary filmmaker Valarie Kaur on listening: "Deep listening is an act of surrender. We risk being changed by what we hear. When I really want to hear another person’s story, I try to leave my preconceptions at the door and draw close to their telling. I am always partially listening to the thoughts in my own head when others are speaking, so I consciously quiet my thoughts and begin to listen with my senses. Empathy is cognitive and emotional—to inhabit another person’s view of the world is to feel the world with them. But I also know that it’s okay if I don’t feel very much for them at all. I just need to feel safe enough to stay curious. The most critical part of listening is asking what is at stake for the other person. I try to understand what matters to them, not what I think matters. Sometimes I start to lose myself in their story. As soon as I notice feeling unmoored, I try to pull myself back into my body, like returning home. As Hannah Arendt says, ‘One trains one’s imagination to go visiting.’ When the story is done, we must return to our skin, our own worldview, and notice how we have been changed by our visit." Today we have another episode in our “Overcomer” series.  These are stories of women who have overcome something big in life, that could have broken them...but it didn’t - and instead they have figured out how to put their feet on solid ground and do things differently for their children or found a way to be a light to others enduring the same thing. These stories range from emotional trauma, to teen mothers, to mothers of children with disabilities and everything in between.  These episodes are kind of bonus episodes so you may see an extra one of these episodes pop up every now and again. Today's guest in the Overcomer series tells her story of growing up in an emotionally stunted home where the only emotion that was comfortable for anyone was anger.  As an adult, she realized that what she experienced as a child falls into the realm of emotional trauma and still has an impact today.  & Today she tells her story. More about Lindsay: Lindsay is an educator and coach with her Master’s degree in motivation and behaviour change. Her research on motivation and behaviour change has been published internationally. She is passionate about helping women balance their career and motherhood without feeling so overwhelmed. Being a mom to her two little boys is her most favourite role ever, but she also knows she is more than just a mother. Lindsay believes in always telling it how it is, that change is always possible and that getting outside and moving can fix almost any problem.

Alright you guys, I’m throwing somewhat of a curveball at you today.  I am going to have a few interviews sprinkled throughout the rest of 2020 that are a part of a series I am calling “Overcomer”.  These are stories of women who have overcome something big in life, that could have broken them...but it didn’t - and instead they have figured out how to put their feet on solid ground and do things differently for their children or found a way to be a light to others enduring the same thing. These stories range from emotional abuse, to teen mothers, to mothers of children with disabilities and everything in between.  These episodes are kind of bonus episodes so you may see an extra one of these episodes pop up every now and again.  Meaning there will be 2 LTM episodes in a week potentially.   I had this idea because I feel like we are all battling something.  And I only have the perspective that I have.  So I wanted to bring in women who have gone on a journey through something really hard and came out on the other end.  I’ve done this to 1. Give hope to anyone who finds themselves in similar shoes.  And 2. To give women a platform to share their stories.   And what an honor it has been.

Our first guest in the Overcomer series was a teen mom who was pressured to not keep her baby but instead chose to raise her son.  The relationship with her son's father was unhealthy and when her son was 3 she finally left after a series of intense circumstances.  This is a story of grit and grace, addiction, and redemption, and the power of a mother’s love. In this episode, Stephanie challenges you to do 5 things this week to make you marriage just a little bit better after this week. Are you up for the challenge? So who's up for a challenge?  You can do anything for 5 days. I'll be doing this right along with you. Ok, so instead of emailing you every day this week we are going to try something else. Get out your calendar for the week (smartphone or paper!) Write these down somewhere you will remember. . . Ok, ready? . .

1 - Text this today, "What's one thing I could take off your plate today?"

Mow the grass? Laundry? Cooking? Even if it isn't your jam, even if you are SWAMPED. (Hello, #momlife) Just figure out something you can take off his plate today and do it - bonus if you can do it happily.

OUTSERVE

2- Leave a sweet note somewhere he will find it later on.

Justin is on his computer a lot for work so I've gone on his computer and searched for the "sticky note" app and wrote him a note that popped up on his computer once he sat down at work for the day. A post-it note on the steering wheel, or a note in his lunch (If you pack his lunch-this girl does not do that lol!!)

OUTGIVE

3 Don't complain to him today

My husband is a great listener. This girl goes 1,000 miles a minute about everyone and everything (good/bad/everything in between) He's my best friend. So don't hear 'don't ever complain' or 'be fake', but if I'm honest, sometimes I can complain a lot more than I realize. This is more for your awareness than saving him from our rants ;) So be mindful today. If you NEED to complain, call your girl. Try to control what you say today. <3

OUTSERVE

4 Drop things and greet him today when he comes home or you come home.

I've always been the first one home in this household but it's easy to use that first minute he comes in the door to throw him into a task. "Hey! I'm trying to make dinner, hold Tristan, finish laundry, and Graham needs his butt wiped and Noah needs to finish his reading. Can you help with something please? (Cue the super loving greeting and martyr lol. Anyone else?) Of course it's a partnership. But today, can we pause when we see him for the first time after work. Can we go to him, look him in the eyes, give him a hug and tell him we love him and we are glad that he is home? (Then remind him about the 3yo's butt that needs to be wiped ;)

OUTLOVE

5 Do something he loves that you don't like.

FOOTBALL. My gosh. I try so hard to like football. (Eh, that's a lie...I don't try that hard.) I love watching my son play but I just can't get into all the professional games and how long they are. Justin LOVES to watch football though. He also loves when I sit and actually watch a game and he can talk about players or argue calls with me. Usually game time = nap time for me. But this week when a game comes on (tonight actually 'Who Dey!"- I won't roll my eyes. I'll cuddle up and watch the dang thing and pretend not to hate it ;)

As Christians, we are called to deny ourselves. But there is a difference between self-denial and self-sacrifice and it is SO important to know the difference between the two. (Especially in this Hot Mess Mom culture we live in) To put it simply: Denying yourself- is actively choosing not to have or do something in order to make room for God’s Kingdom to be grown in and through your life.  Sacrificing yourself- is to physically, mentally, or emotionally die off or withhold a basic need that inhibits you from fulfilling God’s purpose in your life. https://legacythroughmotherhood.lpages.co/5-day-water-challenge/ (Water Challenge!! In today's episode, Stephanie interviews Allie Casazza. We talk about all things women and wealth and world change. https://www.rbcwealthmanagement.com/us/en/research-insights/the-new-face-of-wealth-and-legacy-how-women-are-redefining-wealth-giving-and-legacy-planning/detail/ (Wealth Study) https://youtu.be/VZ_wdeog5Ek (Meditation Allie talked about in the show.) https://www.facebook.com/groups/1457971401027693/ (LTM Facebook Group) https://www.instagram.com/legacy_through_motherhood/?hl=en (LTM Instagram) Content upgrade: https://legacythroughmotherhood.lpages.co/reasons-to-build-wealth/ (25 Ways Wealth drives World Change) Excerpt from the episode "Money is amoral. It is neither good nor bad. The love of money can cause issues because you are chasing a ghost and if you have an insatiable appetite for more...it will leave you feeling empty. But if you know your identity is secure, in my case in Christ, then the money is nothing more than a tool. A tool that you can use for good. This is why debt is so paralyzing. Like I said in this interview, Being chained by debt is one of the number 1 ways satan is attacking western Christians. We become self-centered, self-focused, we live in fear, in anger, it is extremely closely tied to broken marriages, and I could go on.   Freedom from debt leads to an abundance of choices which in the hands of good people can lead to world change. There is a pretty comprehensive study (which I’ll link to in the show notes) that shows that Women not only own and control greater wealth than ever before, they are also changing the direction of wealth management and the goals of wealth creation. Women far more often say societal causes have become more important than wealth accumulation in defining a legacy, with 62% of women agreeing, compared with 53% of men. This suggests that as women accumulate greater assets, they may shift more capital toward charitable giving and social projects, even at the cost of greater future wealth. So it’s really not about hoarding money. It’s about serving people, making money, then using that money to create world change. This is why we are so passionate about normalizing wealth for women."

This episode is all about how God can use you to change hearts if you show up authentically within your community. And vice versa.⁣ This past year God has been pursuing the heart of my friend, Kelly. God put her specifically on my heart a year ago when a conversation happened at an event with our gym and someone asked her if she was involved in church or wanted to be. And her response was a “HELL NO please don’t even ask” (and actually that’s a cleaner way to put it) ☺️.⁣⁣ Now, a little over a year later she has a relationship with God and is leaning into that. Her story back to God just involved a bunch of people loving her where she was and being authentic so she could see and be in community with real, jacked-up, completely normal people who also loved Jesus.⁣⁣ This episode is my story of how God put it on my heart to pursue her and then I interview her so she could tell her story throughout this past year.⁣ Her favorite thing in the world is a Phoenix rising from the ashes. We were talking about Isaiah 61 together earlier where it talks about God making beauty from ashes and I couldn’t think of a more beautiful way to describe this past year for my sweet friend. 🖤⁣

This episode is 2-fold given the situation happening right now. ⁣⁣ This episode is about our journey of pursuing less (things) in the Sims household over the last 4 years and how freeing it can be to let things go. ⁣⁣ This episode came at the perfect time because we are stuck in our houses 😅.⁣ Does your home cause you stress and anxiety or is it your place of peace and comfort? Does your home overwhelm you or is it a place of rest? We are still on this journey of pursuing less but it has caused our life and my motherhood to be so much lighter and more enjoyable. It was something I didn't even know I needed and I'm excited to share it with you.⁣ I also talk about teaching kids at home when you aren't a teacher. I feel comfortable with what's happening because I'm a teacher but I know some mamas are feeling anxious about keeping up with all the academics and making sure their kids don't fall behind during this time. I got you. I talk through some things to remember during these next 3 weeks (or possibly more).⁣

https://legacythroughmotherhood.lpages.co/mission-statement-guide/ (Step-by-step guide to build your family's mission statement) This kind of supplements last weeks episode on being a united front in marriage. I share our personal mission statement for our family and talk through tangible ways to be united on the big things so you can streamline the small things ❤ Decision fatigue is REAL and when we are trying to make a decision about anything and everything all.day.long it just creates frustration. ⁣ ⁣ If you can get united on the big goals, your family's mission - it makes the day to day a little simpler. It may not be the sexiest topic - but it's a conversation we need to have. Between the go, go, go of this culture, mixed with exhaustion, and the constant run around...it's easy to look up (like I did) and think, "How in the world am I going to have 2 in school next year?" We need to be reminded sometimes that even though it seems like we will always have tiny babies or be wiping a toddlers butt....that's not really the case. Our kids are having their childhood right.now. And we need to re calibrate every once in awhile to make sure we aren't way off course. ♥⁣ ⁣ We are all manifesting some kind of life for our family...are you being intentional with the legacy you are creating?! (at least...most of the time ;))⁣ ⁣ This 25 min episode will hopefully give you the motivation you need to reconnect on the big things you want out of your motherhood and your family and give you easy action steps to get clear and get focused. ❤ ⁣ ⁣ I hope you guys enjoy!⁣

This episode talks about how to be a united front in your marriage and parenting when you don’t always agree. I walk through a framework we use when we don’t agree on the small things and then when we don’t agree on the big things. 🤷🏻‍♀️ It happens. I talk about steps to take when you don’t agree on education for your kids, ways to discipline, sleep schedules, finances, number of children to have, if you want to go to church and your spouse doesn’t, and more... all the fun things that tend to drive a wedge in our marriages. Show Notes https://www.parents.com/baby/sleep/basics/the-ferber-method-explained/ (The Ferber Method (Cry it out)) 7-step framework to get on the same page: Write it down (Shine a light on it) Is it REALLY a big deal to you? (Sometimes, we feel like we should care or do something because of outside pressures to do so...but in reality we may not care as much as we think we do...OR we realize our spouse actually cares more about a certain topic than you realized) Contemplate who should have the authority or the final say (i.e. I had the final say in education because I'm a teacher and he had the final say in rentals because he deals with our rentals the most) Find Evidence/studies/journals to back up your stance. (Disagree on screen time? Find researched based articles that show the effects of extended screen time for children - can't argue with facts! ;) ) Take baby steps towards one another. (It's unlikely, if it's a big topic, that someone is going to completely surrender their point of view or stance. So both give a little bit. You think screen time should be 30 min a day and he thinks 5 hours is fine? Settle on 3 hours (2 movies a day) Lead by Example. (Sometimes we get stubborn and we aren't convicted at the same time about the same thing as our spouse...so as much as it would be great to do things together...sometimes you just need to manage screen time, eat healthy when they aren't, and keep a budget yourself before they are ready. Seek Marriage Counseling (When we find ourselves really digging our heels in...there is usually something deeper going on. It's really nice to have someone from the outside looking in give us advice when we can't see the root cause clearly.

To join the LTM email list and keep the conversation head to www.simsarrows.com and sign up! Also, there is a LTM facebook group just for the purpose to continue the conversation that is happening on this show. https://www.facebook.com/groups/1457971401027693/
