Amanda Ripley is a New York Times bestselling author and an investigative journalist for the Atlantic, Politico, the Washington Post and other outlets. Today she joins me to talk about her book, HIGH CONFLICT: Why We Get Trapped & How We Get Out
This is a fascinating look at the polarising conflicts of our times - whether it's Left vs Right, race vs race, state vs state, gang vs gang, activism vs establishment or any other conflict rooted in polarity, high conflict destroys relationships, communities and lives. If, like me, you're interested in escaping the "tar pits" of high conflict, you need to check out this interview and the book to go with it.
As a side note, this will be the last regular interview episode of the Managing Violence Podcast. It's been a great run. I will be closing out with one more reflective episode, but this is the final interview and I'm happy to end it on this note. Enjoy!

I am joined once again by Mary Stevens, an accomplished martial arts instructor and also lead instructor at Violence Prevention & Management UK. Mary is a lifelong learner and incredible teacher, so I took the opportunity to pick her brain about her last 12 months of study which includes seminars with the likes of Richard Dimitri, Pamela Armitage, Dr Tammy Yard McCracken, Rory Miller and me! To compare notes on how each of these world-leading instructors taught their "soft skills" material made for a great conversation.
We also touch on Mary's important work with FairFight, bringing self-protection skills to disadvantaged girls in India.

"Making the decision to have a child...is to decide forever to have your heart go walking around outside your body."
Keeping our kids safe (and ourselves sane) is one of our most important duties as parents...but the best advice for doing that is scattered across dozens of disciplines. Karate teachers, police, sociologists, and alarm companies all have their own opinions, and some of them even contradict each other.

I am using this milestone episode of the Managing Violence Podcast to plant a flag.
It is time we tear down this makeshift industry we have continued to patch, fix and repair over the past 70 or so years. Like a loved family home that has been renovated and added to in ad hoc fashion as it has been outgrown, sometimes the best option is to take the lessons and rebuild for the future. It's time for us to create something that is truly fit for purpose.
In this podcast I talk about what I think is the future of our industry. A move towards violence prevention and management, the incorporation of best-practice risk management principles and formalising professional education for instructors.

Ellis Amdur has worked in the field of crisis intervention since 1989. He has developed a range of training and consultation services, as well as a unique style of assessment and psychotherapy. These are based on a combination of phenomenological psychology and the underlying philosophical premises of classical Japanese martial traditions. Ellis’s professional philosophy can best be summed up in this idea: the development of an individual’s integrity and dignity is the paramount virtue. This can only occur when people live courageously, regardless of the circumstances, and take responsibility for their roles in making the changes they desire.
Ellis is the author of 17 books including works on martial arts, crisis intervention, de-escalation and fiction.

Willie "the Bam" Johnson is a Black Belt Magazine Hall of Fame martial artist, a 7th degree black belt in karate and a 5th degree black belt in Wushu Kung Fu. However, his story started very differently.
Born in a poor neighbourhood to a disabled mother, Willie spent time between tournaments selling drugs and running the street. It would be fair to say that Shaun has seen his fair share of violence and depravity throughout his life. In fact, more like many lives worth.
But it has not defined the man he has become today. Despite it trying its very best.
Shaun O’Gorman is a highly accomplished and recognised Retired Police Officer and former member of the Queensland Police Dog Squad, or K9 Unit. After joining the force at the tender age of 19, Shaun worked his way up to the K9 unit at just age 22. His normal ‘every day’ would consist of anything from violent domestic disturbances, armed hold-ups, vehicle pursuits or large brawls. Shaun also worked as a tactical dog handler with the Special Emergency Response Team (SWAT). Several years later he joined the Covert and Surveillance Unit working on Major and Organised Crime syndicates trafficking in narcotics and other serious criminal activities.
Shaun thought he was living his dream with every night filled with excitement, violence and the opportunity to push himself to his limits and help others. He loved his career. But it did not last. After a period of time, he realised that he was unfulfilled and becoming more angry, reactive and violent. He was in weekly fist fights and was encountering more and more violent offenders. He actively sought out confrontations as he became more and more addicted to the adrenaline and the opportunity to prove he was tough and fearless as a way to try to manage the significant impact his career was having on him.
Shaun left the Police when he was 31 and began a very dark time in his life. He had lost the career, his identity and felt like a failure. The violence and depravity he had seen human beings perpetrate against each other meant he lost all faith in humanity.
He suffered Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, clinical depression, drank excessively, was very angry and came extremely close to suicide many times.
What followed was a 17-year journey of personal development courses, study, education, working with coaches and mentors and finding every piece of information possible on resilience, stress and leadership – with an end goal of healing himself and becoming an effective leader in his own life.
He now devotes his life to helping others using the knowledge, education and experience that helped him help himself. While forging a successful corporate executive career after leaving the Police, Shaun developed and now continues to follow his passion for helping other people.

What a crazy honour it is to sit and talk with one of my teenage heroes, a man who embodies the warrior spirit, Enson Inoue.
Enson Inoue is an MMA legend having fought in both PRIDE and the UFC against the toughest fighters in the world at their peak - fighters like Randy Couture, Frank Shamrock, Minotauro Nogueira, Igor Vovchanchyn, Mark Kerr, Heath Herring and more. Enson became famous for his philosophy of "Yamato Damashii" (or Japanese soul). In this exclusive interview, Enson talks about his willingness to die in the ring, some of the craziness that his warrior spirit got him into outside of the ring, and his humanitarian efforts since retirement.
ALL PATREON PROCEEDS FOR THE MONTH OF OCTOBER WILL GO TO THE ENSON INOUE FOUNDATION!

He's the grandfather of modern self-defence. A legendary martial artist whose journey of self-discovery and self-destruction on the doors of Coventry nightclubs was documented in the paradigm shifting memoir, Watch My Back. His breakthrough training methods such as Animal Day training changed the way self-defence was taught throughout the world in the 1990s. Since then, Geoff Thompson has written more than 45 books, stage plays, films, a musical and won a BAFTA. His martial arts journey has led to a profound spiritual journey, encompassed in his latest book, Notes From A Factory Floor.
It is my profound privilege to interview one of my personal heroes, and a man who inspired so much of my early work, the incomparable Geoff Thompson.

You will be hard-pressed to find a martial artist with the depth and breadth of experience that Richard Norton possesses. After 55 years of continuous training, Richard combines practical experience working in bars and clubs in the 70's, bodyguarding the world's biggest celebrities through the 80's, starring in martial arts films with the likes of Chuck Norris and Jackie Chan, holding high dan-ranks in Zen Do Kai, Goju-ryu karate, Chun Kuk Do, and Brazilian JiuJitsu, and choreographing fights in some of the biggest Hollywood blockbusters in recent years.
Richard has had a huge impact on my journey as a martial artist and it was great to sit down and have this conversation with him.

Savannah Archambault is a self-defence instructor and founder of SAVage Hybrid Combat Systems based in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Growing up in a military family, Savannah always had an urge to protect her community and be of service. She eventually found her calling after stumbling across the legendary Kevin Secours and becoming an instructor in his system of self-defence.
In this conversation we tackle some hard topics and provide a criminally under-represented view of what it's like to be a female in a combatives class, the motivations and mindset for women entering these classes, and the advantages and disadvantages of being a woman who wants to teach self-defence.
Savannah also shares openly about her experience of rape and sexual assault and the impact that has had on her and the way she teaches.

Pamela Armitage is not your typical self-defence instructor. She wasn't a lifelong martial artist, a cop, a soldier, or anything of the sort. How do you accidentally become a close personal friend and student of both Dan Inosanto and Rickson Gracie? Paul Vunak is a legend in the martial arts, a man that many feel is the true successor of Bruce Lee, a former hand-to-hand combat instructor for SEAL Team Six, and holder of more accolades than it bears to mention.
He is the founder and head of the Progressive Fighting Systems and he has been the key component to bringing Bruce Lee's art of Jeet Kune Do into today's real world of combat. He has bridged the gap on how to break down the "MMA Matrix" with traditional arts of Wing Chun (specifically trapping), the destructive combat proven art of Filipino Kali, the power and finesse of boxing and Muay Thai, the ground equalizer of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, the Filipino art of Kino Mutai and the core of the R.A.T. program - headbutts, knees and elbows.

What a ride this episode is. From growing up around crime, drugs, alcohol, violence and murder, to spending years of his own life in prison after a life-and-death knife fight, to now training law enforcement and private citizens how to prepare for violence... it's fair to say Varg has a unique story. You need to hear it.

How often do we hear self-defence instructors talk about "psychopaths", "sociopaths" or "random psychos" in scenario training, or discuss boogeyman threats? Yet, how many of them truly understand the terminology they are using?
On this important episode, Krav Maga instructor and author, as well as clinically trained psychologist, Gershon Ben Keren, debunks many of the myths and misconceptions around these conditions. This is one not to be missed.

Daz Norton is the founder of Fendo UK (Integrated Defence Systems). Drawing on his life’s experience growing up in government housing, his decades of training martial arts, and his academic background — he codified his experiences into what is today known as the Crazy Monkey Defense System.
Rodney earned his Doctorate from the University of Leicester’s School of Business. His thesis and research focused on the embodied aspect of Mindful-Leadership. Key to his research was studying the efficacy of mindfulness first taught through an experiential, action oriented approach, and its subsequent application to leadership performance. In addition, he earned his Master of Arts degree in Leading Innovation and Change from York St John Universities School of Business. His undergraduate work was in psychology.
In the past two decades Rodney has worked closely with army special forces teams – helping them develop inner-fitness capabilities and defensive tactics skills for life and death encounters. He has instructed law enforcement officers both in the United States, Canada, Australia and Germany on how to protect themselves when all else fails. He regularly teaches cabin crew how to deal with unruly passengers 30 000 feet in the air. On top of that, he continues to teach seminars around the world on the two modern martial arts lifestyle brands he created (now taught in 15-countries around the world). And if this wasn’t enough, he is often asked to guest lecture or be a keynote speaker on topics ranging from embodied-leadership, mindfulness-in-action, to entrepreneurial success.

That's exactly what we're talking about in this episode of the Managing Violence Podcast with Dr Nate Meehan.
Dr. Meehan led the JDLR Project research team while he was a Social Scientist at the United States Naval Research Laboratory’s (NRL) Adversarial Modeling Exploitation Office. At the NRL, he also successfully managed a variety of short- and long-term projects for the Department of Defense, the Department of Justice, and the Department of Homeland Security on topics ranging from crime analysis to the development of web-based research platforms for visual search. He earned his Ph.D. at the School of Criminal Justice at the State University of New York Albany. Dr. Meehan is also a Certified Law Enforcement Analyst and worked as the Lead Crime and Intelligence Analyst. As an analyst, he also assisted on an FBI Operation Safe Streets (OSS) Taskforce targeting violent gang members. This is truly an episode not to be missed!
Early in life, Michael was enrolled in special-education classes and given the drug Ritalin. As a result, he endured constant bullying. To compensate for his small and skinny stature and the social stigma of being in special education, Michael’s mother enrolled him in his first martial arts class in 1980.
Earning several different rankings in various traditional arts, Michael stumbled upon Jeet Kune Do in the late 1980’s. In the early 1990’s he not only maintained a victorious cage fighting record but also trained with firearms and tactical weaponry as a professional body guard, while finishing his education in Criminal Justice. As a security guard in the greater Chicago land area, Michael was exposed to a side of self-defense/fighting not often seen in the martial arts. After spending most of his life in martial arts, working in bars and clubs, body guard training, cage fighting, earning black belts and obtaining a Senior Instructorship in Bruce Lee’s Art of Jeet Kune Do, Michael VanBeek thought he had it all figured out. He was wrong – almost dead wrong.
His life took an unexpected turn and in 2004, divorce and job loss left him in a severe depression. Within two years Michael VanBeek, the once honorable Sifu, was now using drugs and alcohol to escape his depression and isolation and very quickly found himself homeless. From one side of Chicago to the other, Michael’s goal was survival and in many circumstances, fight or die. Whether fighting to stay alive or fighting to feed an addiction, this was not the life of a once respected martial artist. The Cook County Department of Corrections became yet another reoccurring challenge.
Miraculously, Michael eventually turned his life around, re-entered the world of martial arts and reconsidered his career. He chose to dedicate his life to teaching people to protect themselves from the violence he was once a part of – the violence that almost took his life.
Michael realized that much of what the martial arts world had given him was not actually how it was. He began mapping the anatomy of violence, a comprehensive breakdown of the workings of violence from an insiders perspective. Many other "instructors" identified with Michael's message, and soon Focus had locations throughout the country. With a unified goal and service to educate and train people to save their lives from real violence, with honesty and integrity, Focus could now offer “Real Solutions to Real Problems for Real People.”
Today, Michael spends most of his time in service working with special needs children, lecturing and presenting seminars on Counter Violence to families, corporations, security firms, organizations and individuals. In addition to running his company, Michael speaks to groups about increased performance, the gift of suffrage and how to rewire our lives for success, using his story to inspire others.

In this episode, Joe Saunders discusses the 7 key mistakes organisations and companies make when trying to implement workplace violence prevention or customer aggression management initiatives.
In this episode, Joe sits down with his Candian double, Randy King! They talk about a variety of topics, including Randy's early journey from martial artist to security professional, and then developing his passion for teaching self defence.
Trigger warning: This conversation does go quite dark, particular in relation to the stress of self-defence instructors accurately recreating "bad guys" in training, which leads to a conversation around child abuse and pedophilia, so please keep this in mind if you do not want to listen to that segment.
Randy King is an accomplished, impactful, internationally acclaimed mentor, public speaker, author and globe-trotting father.
Having trained in the world of martial arts from the age of 10, Randy embraced traditional training having earned 2 black belts in different disciplines, one being a 4th degree, in Modern Arnis. In 2002, Randy’s perspective and confidence were shattered when he survived a stabbing, while attempting to deescalate a violent situation while he was employed at an Edmonton club as Head of Security. Randy realized that the old ways did not serve as a functional platform for self defense and he became determined to redefine the self defense industry.
Over the course of a decade, Randy grew his desire for technical expertise into a hunger to demystify the psychology of violence through evidence-based research. Randy used his growing knowledge to build K.P.C. Self Defense , a highly successful local gym that he carved out of Edmonton’s inner city. K.P.C’s mandate was (and still is) to train and empower todays most vulnerable members of society. Working alongside at-risk youth, victims of abuse, and the general population Randy’s progressive and innovative methods gave people a realistic, easy to digest set of tools to help identify conflict, the communication around conflict, and if need be, employ physical techniques to escape and evade an attack.
As Randy’s reputation and influence began to grow, he wanted to shift his focus from being a local influencer to a global one by creating Randy King Live. Under this new banner, Randy began aligning and partnering with other international coaches and organizations such as Safe International , Violence Dynamics , One on One Control Tactics , and others to apply his message; as well as becoming certified in a number of key courses such as Krav Maga, Rory Millers’ Conflict Communication and ‘ Understanding Violence’ from Emory University (with distinction) .
Today, Randy travels the globe, helping others who look to help themselves by focusing on his philosophy of empowerment through empathy and education. Randy’s’ character has been described by clients and colleagues as insightful, practical, personable and dedicated. His passion, charisma, and experience make him an excellent choice to train the individual or organizations in conflict identification and resolution.
Dr Gav Schneider is the CEO of Risk 2 Solution, a 7th degree black belt in krav maga and jiujitsu, completed a PhD in use of force decision making, and was one of 2019's top 20 Global Thought Leaders in Security and Fire, as ranked by IFSEC. He is the author of Beyond the Bodyguard and Can I See Your Hands (ASIS book of the year nominated) as well as an in-demand speaker and corporate risk culture expert. Originally from South Africa with extensive training in Israel, but now living in Australia, Dr Schneider has a unique view on violence and personal readiness. This is an episode not to be missed.
Matt Thornton was one of the early group of American’s to become involved in the art of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, having been introduced to it in 1991. He was also the first person from the State of Oregon to receive a black belt in the Art.
As a teacher he produced a video set in 1999 titled simply, ‘Aliveness’ which became one of the top sellers of all time within the industry. It set off a firestorm of controversy, and remained a central catalyst in a Martial Arts training revolution that is still taking place all over the world. They were voted as one of the top five self-defense videos of all time by Black Belt magazine.
Matt’s main emphasis over the last decade has been addressing superstition as it relates to the fields of sports training, combat sports, and martial arts; the methodology known as aliveness was designed as a tool to help people distinguish between fact, and fiction.
Over the last few years his writing has branched off into other areas. He is currently working on a book which will cover the topic of violence, and its relationship to both combat sports and skepticism.
One of the most fundamental questions we must answer when confronted with violent or aggressive behaviour is "What am I prepared to fight for?" Today's FightBite explores this question.
It's a question as old as the arts themselves. What is the best martial art for self-defense? In this first ever MVP FightBite, violence management expert Joe Saunders breaks down the question in detail and looks at the common answers given, as well as providing his own detailed explanation.
Tony Blauer is a pioneer and legend of the self-defence industry. He was one of the first to introduce behavioural, emotional and psychological elements into martial arts training through the use of scenario replication. He is the creator of the SPEAR system, the inventor of High Gear, and the founder of Blauer Tactical Systems. He also hosts his own podcast titled Know Fear. Tony has been researching and teaching violence management for nearly 40 years and is a wealth of knowledge.

Russ Jarmesty is a hard man. He's a throw back to the traditional days of the English doormen, direct from the mold of Geoff Thompson or Awesome Anderson. He's an accomplished martial artist, full time instructor, and pulls no punches articulating what he feels is lacking in martial arts and society in general. This episode will hurt feelings! Don't listen if you're a sensitive soul.

In this episode, Joe is joined by the owner of Big Dog Security, Kurt Schultt-Schrepping. Kurt is not only an experienced crowd controller and businessman, but also holds academic qualifications in security, counter-terrorism and risk management. He has a particular interest in the causative factors behind violence in licensed establishments and speaks with real knowledge and passion about what can be done to create safer communities. This is a real diamond in the rough of an interview with someone you probably haven't heard from before, but will have a much bigger media presence in the next few years.
Quote of the episode:
"When we say that the violence [in licensed venues] is fuelled by alcohol, it ignores the complexity of the assemblages of violence and precludes all of these other factors and constituting forces that make up what is alcohol-fuelled violence to the point where I don’t even like that term."
Gabe Cohen has a fascinating story. Born to a Jewish family in Long Island, growing up in an affluent neighbourhood, Gabe fell into a drug habit as a teenager. He was arrested at the age of 16 for a shooting, and spent the best part of the next 25 years behind bars on seven different occasions. Alternating his younger years between prison, homelessness, violence and drug abuse, Gabe has a unique understanding of violence and a perspective no other guest has offered. However, his story doesn't end there. Upon his release for the final time, Gabe found Krav Maga and threw himself into the study of the martial art. Gabe now runs his own krav maga organisation and teaches civilians and police essential personal safety. Gabe also runs the Kings and Priests Christian jail ministry. This is a great story you don't want to miss.
This episode is a tonne of fun as Joe chats with long-time friend and best-kept-secret in martial arts, Mr Jim Armstrong. Jim is regarded by some of the legends of the self-defence game as one of the best in the world. He has won praise from luminaries such as Lee Morrison, Richard Dimitri, Brian Ebersole, and many more. Jim has an established pedigree in ring sports (boxing, kickboxing, freestyle karate), Filipino Martial Arts (competed in world stick fighting championships) and of course real world self-defence having become an instructor in both Urban Combatives and Senshido along with his own unique blend, Barebone Combatives. He's also a wonderful human being and speaks at length about why that is important.
I'm joined by an absolute legend of the martial arts on this episode. He is the founder of Dog Brothers Martial Arts, a pioneer of full-contact weapon training, a warrior philosopher and a cult figure within the hardcore martial arts.
"Crafty Dog" Marc Denny shares his story of finding martial arts at the age of 30 after a wild life growing up in New York (as well as being arrested and put in a Mexican jail while attending law school) and the formation of a system of fighting that the early UFC called "too extreme even for us."
Crafty Dog also touches on the psychology and philosophy that underpins the Dog Brothers movement and what he is doing now in his 60's that keeps him excited about training.
On this episode we are joined again by the phenomenal Rory Miller, author of many titles including Meditations on Violence, Facing Violence, and Conflict Communication. In this chat, Rory shares his thoughts on verbal de-escalation as well as gives some insight into a fascinating new project he has in the works.
Note: There are some audio issues in this episode due to Rory being in a weak signal area at his home. Please persevere because the content is definitely worth it!
From a bullied kid with asthma who was diagnosed with PTSD in his teens through serious violence, to multiple blackbelt, bouncer, bodyguard, martial arts champion and now best selling author. Matt will share his amazing story.

He is a full time aggression management researcher and trainer for a large metropolitan hospital, a university lecturer and self-defence instructor. This is NOT a martial arts episode. All of Jim’s experience comes directly from the coalface of dealing with aggression in the most unpredictable of environments and his 20+ year passion for understanding and managing aggression in the clinical setting.

This is an excellent primer not only for prospective students, but also for instructors from traditional or sporting backgrounds who are looking to make their self-defence training more realistic.
Matt Larsen is the most successful hand-to-hand combat trainer and program developer in history, responsible for creating the U.S. Army program that continues to train soldiers today in what it takes to face combat from the ground up.
His passion for mastering the martial arts started three decades ago in Japan and led him early in his career to compete against fighters across the Far East, from boxing in the U. S. Marine Corps, fighting in the All Japan Karate Championship and Kodokan Judo in Tokyo and Okinawa, Muay Thai in Bangkok, Kali in the Philippines and Taekwondo in Korea. Training with the best names in the arts, Larsen has earned black belts in several martial arts, including Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Judo and Shotokan Karate.
Larsen started his military career in the U.S. Marine Corps before moving over to the Army and joining the ranks of the elite 75th Ranger Regiment. While there, he was called upon to design a hand-to-hand combat program which was quickly adopted by the entire Regiment. Larsen spent more than a decade in Army Special Operations and during that time became the subject matter expert on hand-to-hand combat. Regarded as the father of the Modern Army Combatives Program, known as MACP, Larsen overhauled the Army’s hand-to-hand combat doctrine by re-writing the Combatives field manual – FM 3-25.150 – in 2002, and updated the manual in 2009, the most recent edition. He founded the Army Combatives School and served as both its commandant and the director of the Modern Army Combatives Program 2000 until 2010. In 2016 he was appointed as Director of Combatives at West Point Academy.
Matt is the author of “Modern Army Combatives: Battle-Proven Techniques and Training Methods” and he co-authored “Sniper: American Single-Shot Warriors in Iraq and Afghanistan."
