Welcome to the Holly Springs Deep Dive Podcast. I'm gonna be honest, listeners: Holly Springs has been a tale of two towns lately. In one Holly Springs there have been exciting announcements about big new companies building here, skyrocketing property values, and the recent naming of NC by CNBC as the number 1 state for business in 2022.
But the other Holly Springs continues to deal with intolerance, bigotry, discrimination, and a seemingly well thought out plan by some of our elected officials and citizens to keep it that way.
Back to that CNBC announcement that NC is the best state in the country for business…we did have one strike against us. It's buried under all of the good things they said about us. Guess what it is…NC ranks in the lower half of our 50 states for life, health and INCLUSION. Sounds like Holly Springs is a microcosm of what's right AND wrong with NC. We need to do better.
To that end, I want to introduce you to someone you might not already know. They're a wonderful, whip-smart, engaged, funny, dedicated, tax-paying, home-owning, family-supporting voter who happens to be non-binary. Now I understand that when people hate, it's usually connected to fear. I want to let this person shine and show you they're nothing to be afraid of. You're REALLY missing out if you exclude the entire group of LGBTQIA+ people from your life. MY life is absolutely richer because of people like this episode's guest.

Welcome to Episode 45 of the Holly Springs Deep Dive Podcast.
I'm not playing my peppy little music sting this week. My mom died today, August 24, in the wee hours of the morning.
She was entirely too young for this to have happened, but the autoimmune disease that she was able to control with varying degrees of success over the past 30+ years was finally too much for her body to handle.
My mom was really shy most of her life, but she was so selfless and was nice to absolutely everyone. She'd go out of her way to help people, and anyone who took the time to get to know her felt like their life was better for it.
So I'm asking you today to take the time you'd normally spend listening to this podcast and instead, just do something nice for someone else. Do it in memory of my mom. And if you feel like it, please let me know what you did.
I'll be back with new episodes soon, focusing on election season, because November 3 will be here before you know it. I’m hoping to talk to candidates for the District 8 Wake County School Board seat that Lindsey Mahaffey currently holds, the North Carolina House of Representatives district 37 seat that Sydney Batch currently holds, and the North Carolina State Senate District 17 seat that Sam Searcy currently holds. I’m pretty sure our current Wake County Commissioner for District 2, Matt Calabria, is running unopposed, so we’ll see what happens there.

Hear from the FIFTH nurse who tried to talk with me about their experiences caring for COVID-19 patients in the Triangle.
The first four each cancelled at the last minute because of truly heartbreaking circumstances, from sheer exhaustion to trying to maintain their own family in their limited amount of free time to not being able to take a meal break because so many coworkers called out from their shifts that day. One even wanted to remain anonymous for fear of reprisal from the community when she talked about COVID-19 as a real disease with real consequences.

In honor of Pride Month 2020, I present to you two citizens of Holly Springs who happen to be in the LGBTQ community. They're our neighbors and friends, but they don't always get the sort of respect and care that they deserve. Hear their stories here, and resolve to do better. These two are just a small representation of the part of our town that identifies as LGBT or Q, and they're wonderful people to get to know.

These past two weeks have only added to my own level of reflection about the world we’re living in. Between the murder of George Floyd and local, national and worldwide protests, it’s hard to know which way is up. One thing I know for sure is that we as a society desperately need to start listening to our fellow human beings and community members who happen to have skin that’s darker than our own.
That’s what this episode is: an opportunity for you to just listen. These are members of your community, right here in Holly Springs, who have experienced racism in big ways and small ways, here and far away. This is such a small representation of what happens every single day in neighborhoods, stores, offices, and schools and on the road to Target or Harris Teeter or the school carpool line.
Listen closely, as I have, as the emotion creeps in for one contributor, frustration for another, empowerment from yet another as they share their experience of being black in Holly Springs. These testimonials are entirely unedited, except to link together multiple separate recordings by the same contributor.

This is a fun one. I sat down with Matt and Christy Griffith, the couple who are opening the restaurant, Pimiento Tea Room in downtown Holly Springs. The interview took place on July 10, 2019.
