SIGN BELOW TO END ANIMAL TESTINGAcross Europe, millions of animals are used every year in tests that frequently inflict suffering, which can be severe, but seldom deliver on their main promise, which is better health for humans. They include mice, fish, rats, guinea pigs, rabbits, cats, dogs and monkeys.

This suffering must end – for the animals and for better medicine, better product safety and better environmental protection. But we urgently need your help.

If you are an EU citizen, you can end animal testing by signing the European Citizens’ Initiative.

It’s that simple.

As some of you may know I run a podcast production business called Bloody Vegans Productions. One of the podcasts I am fortunate enough to produce is the fantastic 'Think Like a Vegan Podcast', which is a companion to the incredible book of the same name authored by Emilia Leese & Eva Charalambides. The podcast is truly one of my favourite shows (despite rather than because of my involvement) & so I wanted to bring an episode of the show to you by way of introduction. You can subscribe to the show wherever you get podcasts & hear all 8 episodes of season 1 featuring Emilia & a host of fantastic guests.

A little about Emilia...

Emilia A. Leese, writes essays on life, travel and veganism for a variety of online publications and is closely involved in a rewilding project in the Scottish Highlands. She regularly hosts benefit supper clubs and is a speaker on vegan ethics at a variety of events. She also developed life skills and ethics workshops for underserved youth. She has been a corporate finance lawyer for over twenty years. She and her husband Roger, who is also vegan, live in London and the Highlands. Follow her work on Emisgoodeating.com and BirchfieldHighlands.org

Think Like a Vegan episode show notes:

In this episode I talk about what "Veganism is for everyone" means. I break veganism down to its fundamental ethical component, show why it must be part of social justice discussions and demystify what it means to be an activist.

Todd Sinclair became a vegan author and activist, Todd Sinclair spent years leading travel groups in far-off places, a fitting occupation for someone who is now showing the way to a radical new approach to veganism. Todd’s journey to veganism began on a small Canadian dairy farm, and after winding his way literally around the world, he found its catalyst in a serious illness, contracted when he was thousands of miles from home. But it was during that desperate sickness - and in the loving presence of monks - that he found his healing and ultimately a new truth, by changing to a plant-based diet. And, although his good health lasted, the rest of the planet soon became sick with something else—Covid 19. The virus soon revealed what Todd had discovered for himself. Which is that the world is not sustainable as it is, and that the vegan way of life is the only viable and realistic choice for the future. That’s when Rebel Vegan Life was born.

Todd is fiercely committed to sounding the call for a vegan revolution, declaring that a vegan life is the only viable and realistic way forward for the future. His first three books—REBEL VEGAN LIFE:A Radical Take on Veganism for a Brave New World/ REBEL VEGAN LIFE: AnEssential Plant-Based Nutrition & Survival Guide/ REBEL VEGAN:Ultimate Travel Guide for Plant-Based Adventures in a Brave New World - are proof of that passion. In addition to being an activist and author, Todd also wears the labels (and apron!) of writer, podcaster, speaker, and self-taught chef. He currently calls London home and spends his leisure time searching for its hidden history.

Fabio Matticoli is the founder of NXT LVL PZA, the secretly vegan pizza brand taking London by storm, labelled by customers as the ‘best vegan pizza available’. Fabio has been heavily involved within the food industry for 10 years, with a focus on shifting customer attitudes away from meat consumption through delicious alternatives. Having realised the pizza options available were not fulfilling that ‘meaty’ craving without harming animals, Fabio partnered with some of the biggest vegan brands on the market including Beyond Meat, THIS, Heura Foods and more to launch NXT LVL PZA.

Gaia launched in December 2021 to create a milk that Mother Earth would be proud of and released the ‘hemp and oat mlk’ and ‘hemp and coco mlk’ in January 2022. These initial products are a result of Michael’s frustration with other plant-based milks, which always seem to compromise on sustainability (think damaging monocrops like soy, the volume of water needed to grow almonds, exploitation of workers for coconuts, etc.) As oat milk is currently the most popular option in the market, Gaia’s Farming Co. lent on the great qualities of oats while combining it with hemp to create a unique blend that is familiar to consumers. The barista-standard m*lk is also free from soy, dairy and gluten and contains no added sugar, colours, flavours, or preservatives. Hemp is a sustainability gladiator. It sucks up four times the amount of carbon from the air than trees per acre, it can replenish soil between crop cycles, and it grows rapidly, without the need for pesticides. And that’s not all. Hemp also possesses a rich nutritional profile. The seeds are rich in Omega 3 and 6 and contain all the essential amino acids for optimal human health.

Anthony Cotter’s health-conscious mother and party-friendly father raised him and his older brother in Queens, New York. She taught her boys yoga, meditation and raised Anthony vegetarian from birth. His mother and father divorced when Anthony was five, and he and brother lived with an abusive stepfather for the next few years. After his mother’s passing on Christmas Eve, Anthony and his brother moved in with their drug-addicted father. His brother would wind-up in Rikers Island, later diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia.

Anthony left home and lived on the streets for years, bouncing around from couch, to park bench, to rooftops and living in a wooden shed during winter months. At seventeen, he moved into his first apartment in South Ozone Park, and found himself in the world alone, battling addictions and poverty. Anthony was around twenty when he was given a book called “A Diet for A New America,” by John Robins. He decided to remove all animal products from his life and started to become mindful of what he consumed. He acquired a high school equivalency diploma and went on to study nutrition in Brooklyn College. He left college and went to the Culinary Arts Institute to learn more about raw food techniques and vegan cooking.

With his partner, he moved from Brooklyn to San Francisco and opened InBloom Foods; a raw food catering company. He taught meditation and yoga throughout the juvenile hall systems with the nonprofit group Mind Body Awareness Project. Eventually, Anthony and his partner moved back east to work in finance, opened a yoga studio, had their first child. Today he lives in the Green Mountains of Vermont with his two children. He is most fulfilled when speaking about health and wellness, sharing stories, products, books, music, documentaries and connecting great people together. Throughout his life he always sought guidance from elders, gurus, and mentors who taught him how to create a better life, and to always follow a worthy ideal. Anthony’s health and wellness success simply comes from focusing on his Movement, Meals, Mind & Money philosophy.

Midge Raymond is the author of the novel My Last Continent and the award-winning short-story collection Forgetting English. Her writing has appeared in TriQuarterly, American Literary Review, Bellevue Literary Review, the Los Angeles Times magazine, the Chicago Tribune, Poets & Writers, and many other publications.

Midge worked in publishing in New York before moving to Boston, where she taught communication writing at Boston University for six years. She has taught creative writing at Boston's Grub Street Writers, Seattle's Richard Hugo House, and San Diego Writers, Ink. She has also published two books for writers, Everyday Writing and Everyday Book Marketing.

Midge lives in the Pacific Northwest, where she is co-founder of the boutique publisher Ashland Creek Press.

Ashland Creek Press is a vegan-owned boutique publisher dedicated to publishing books with a world view. Co-founders Midge and John are passionate about the environment, animal protection, ecology, and wildlife, and their goal is to publish books that combine these themes with compelling stories.

The latest release from Ashland Creek Press is the fantastic 'My Days of Dark Green Euphoria by A.E. Copenhaver

Winner of the Siskiyou Prize for New Environmental Literature, this satirical novel follows thirtysomething Cara Foster, “a provocative and delightful presence” (Carol J. Adams, author of The Sexual Politics of Meat). Cara is, one might say, eco-anxious—perhaps even eco-neurotic. She eats out of dumpsters (not because she wants to but because it’s the right thing to do), does laundry as seldom as possible, takes navy showers every couple of days, and is reevaluating her boyfriend for killing a spider. Cara has never met her six (soon to be seven) nephews and nieces because she doesn’t fly domestic (unless it’s an emergency) or international (ever). She longs for a carbon footprint so light you’d hardly know she exists.

“From the very start, this novel is captivating and takes you places you don’t see coming. The 30-something female hero is unlike anyone else you’ve met in fiction, and the darkly hilarious story is ultimately enlightening.” — Robin Raven, author of The Kindness Workbook

“Awareness of ecocide, environmental devastation, and animal suffering might not seem the likely content for a madcap adventure. That was before My Days of Dark Green Euphoria.” — Carol J. Adams, author of The Sexual Politics of Meat

You can pick up a copy of the novel at Ashland Creek Press or you can order through your local book retailer.

Chef Day Radley is the founder of THE VEGAN CHEF SCHOOL, created to provide the vegan movement with progressive learning and innovation. As a newbie vegan chef, in 2010, Chef Day Radley expected to dive into a world where her fellow chefs adored their work; creating dishes with love, pushing back the boundaries of cruelty free food.....sadly this wan't to be the case.It was 2010 and Chef Radley was working in her first pro-chef job. The kitchen was a maelstrom of grumpy, tetchy chefs, barking at each other whilst churning out food with as much care as a factory robot. Any love for food resided solely with her. The rest of the ‘team’ were not vegan or vegetarian and couldn’t care less about cross contamination. They were grown boys stuck in a career that was the best of a limited choice given them at age 16; work as a mechanic, builder or chef. For many, becoming a chef seemed like the easy choice. The long unsociable hours, minimum wage and sweaty, greasy conditions soon makes it clear that it is far from easy. This is a persistent problem in UK kitchens and one that adds to our terrible reputation for a severe lack of culinary finesse. When you pair that with the vegan movement the consequences could be even more severe; it has the potential to limit the growth of veganism. Dana Burton is the founder of Vegan Kids UK...

As Dana explains over on www.vegan-kids.org

"When we asked people why they wanted a community like ours – these quotes were their answers. I knew I wasn’t alone!

As a Vegan parent, I felt my kids were somehow missing out on things and it just wasn’t fair.

I wanted them to feel empowered and to know they are part of something much bigger and then the idea for the Vegan Kids festival began.

After a farmer and villagers put a stop to our first year, it really sent me back to the drawing board. I still wanted to create this community but finding willing farmers and suitable venues was a nightmare. AND well then COVID hit. so that really put a stop to all our plans.

I put the idea on the back burner, and focused on other things. but soon my calling was getting louder in my ear and I started offering online kids sessions every Saturday.

I realised the Kids festival doesn’t need to be the only thing we do to connect Vegan kids. There are lots of ways we can.

So I went back to the drawing board and started the Kids community on Facebook, then I got one of my favourite things a notepad and started jotting down ideas.

They just kept coming.

I want to create a group where Vegan Kids can explore, share, create, learn, make friends and most importantly have fun.

I’m well aware I can’t do this all alone and hope to form many partnerships, to enable us to help other vegan organisations and businesses.

As for the future, this is something I want to focus on, longer term the BIG dream is to have a Vegan kids retreat, where kids can come to learn and play, enough land to hold our own vegan kids festival, rescue any animals that need it and a cool eco village where people can stay, volunteer and play.

Until we get there, we want to create lots of experiences for vegan kids, both online and in person, We’re only limited by our imagination.

Some of the ideas I have for the future include, retreats, family holidays, group outings, conservation holidays, residentials for kids, activist club.

Thank you for reading a bit more about vegan kids and our plans for the future, I hope to see you at some point on the journey!"

Dana

A groundbreaking new documentary, They’re Trying to Kill Us, features notable leaders and influencers from the fields of Hip Hop, medicine, sports, entertainment, policy, and politics weighing in on the singular most deadly threat to American society.

ABOUT THE FILM

Co-directors John Lewis and Keegan Kuhn have teamed up to tell the untold story of the intersections of diet, disease, poverty, institutional racism, food deserts, government corruption and collusion with Big Food and the pharmaceutical industry. The film follows John from his upbringing in Ferguson, Missouri as he crisscrosses the country seeking answers from experts as to why Americans of Color are getting sick and dying from chronic diseases at often twice the rate of white Americans.

Along the way he speaks with Hip Hop artists and celebrities of Color who share their own, deeply personal experiences with how the historically poor diets that have been inflicted upon their community have led to a staggeringly high rate of diabetes, high blood pressure and heart disease.

CAST

The film was co-directed by Keegan Kuhn (What The Health, Cowspiracy) and John Lewis (aka “Badass Vegan”) and features interviews with Hip Hop artists, celebrities and medical professionals such as Ne-Yo, Mya, Dame Dash, Cedric The Entertainer, Maggie Q, New York City Mayoral candidate Eric Adams, and Dr’s Milton Mills and Neal Barnard. They’re Trying to Kill Us also features exclusive interviews with NBA All-Star Chris Paul and multiple Grammy Award Winner Billie Eilish, who are both Executive Producers on the film.

RELEASE DETAILS

Eschewing a conventional release plan, They're Trying to Kill Us will be released at 11am EST on November 11 exclusively on the film's website https://www.theyretryingtokillus.com/. The price to download the film is $20.

Seeking a more efficient and equitable way to release the movie, the filmmakers are launching what they are calling a “Cooperative Release” of the film, giving participants in the documentary, supporters, and select influencers their own unique URL to the film's purchase page and splitting the profits 50/50 for the first week of release. On the filmmakers' side, they are giving their first $1,000,000 dollars raised directly to charity.

ABOUT THE PRODUCERS

JOHN LEWIS: Widely known by his social media handle, “Badass Vegan”, John Lewis is notorious for stoking conversations and debate with his critical views and memes on current issues. John has a large social media following and is a much sought-after public speaker and social and health activist who is accustomed to saying what’s on his mind. In doing so, audiences have responded to his fresh and unfiltered take on social issues.

KEEGAN KUHN: Co-director Keegan Kuhn is best known as the director behind the camera for the award-winning and hugely influential films on Netflix, Cowspiracy (executive produced by Leonardo DiCaprio) and What The Health (executive produced by Joaquin Phoenix).

Stephanie Redcross West started Vegan Mainstream based on a simple idea: to build a pro-vegan world, we need a solid infrastructure of successful businesses and brands to ensure that an ethical lifestyle is accessible to everyone, everywhere. Imagine ethical retail stores, restaurants, clothing options, skin care, cleaning supplies and educational materials in every mall or community! Every step toward making this a reality is a step that moves the vegan movement forward. With this in mind, in 2009, Stephanie started developing tools, training and support for the brave individuals who identify themselves as Vegan Professionals - those starting and running vegan businesses all over North America, and the world. She was well-equipped to do this, with more than 15 years of marketing experience with small businesses and Fortune 500 companies. Since then Stephanie has been a frequent speaker at vegfests, conferences and even her own bootcamp series. Through these types of engagements, and her day-to-day work with Vegan Mainstream, Stephanie inspires others to turn their vegan passion into successful businesses. She is a leader who promotes the concept that there is room for all types of vegan business owners, not only those developing and selling food-related products. We need vegan carpenters, fashion designers, accountants, and more. Known for her impactful 1-on-1 consulting and business coaching services, Stephanie’s clients testify to the difference their work with Vegan Mainstream has made. In this episode Jim chats with co-founder of Green Peace & founder of Sea Shepherd Captain Paul Watson about Seaspiracy, Sea Shepherd & effective activism.

Source of the bio below www.seashepherd.org.uk Paul Watson was born in Toronto, Canada, on December 2, 1950. At six years old, he and his family moved to the lobster fishing town of St. Andrews-by-the-Sea in New Brunswick. The eldest of seven children, Watson lived there until January 1964 when his mother died and his father returned the family to Toronto. His father was Anthony Joseph Watson, a French-Canadian born in New Brunswick, Canada. His mother was Annamarie Larsen, the daughter of a Danish artist Otto Larsen and Canadian Doris Phoebe Clark. The Greenpeace Days Watson was one of the co-founders of the Greenpeace Foundation. In October 1969, his involvement began when he helped organize a voyage on the U.S. and Canadian border to protest against the nuclear testing at Amchitka Island by the Atomic Energy Commission. In the meantime, a second ship was organized. This was the converted Canadian minesweeper the Edgewater Fortune. She was named the Greenpeace Too. One of her crew was Watson. The Greenpeace Too passed the Greenpeace I near Campbell River and carried on north to Alaska - first to Juneau, and then outward bound across the Gulf of Alaska to the Aleutians. The nuclear test had been delayed to foil the voyage of the Greenpeace I, however, the U.S. Atomic Energy Committee advanced the next blast date to avoid the Greenpeace Too. The five-megaton explosion was detonated under Amchitka Island when the Greenpeace Too was still a few hundred miles away. The controversy the Greenpeace voyages generated led to the decision to cancel further tests, and the detonation of November 1971 was the last nuclear test to take place at Amchitka. In 1972, the Don't Make a Wave Committee took the name of the two ships from the first campaign and renamed themselves the Greenpeace Foundation. Watson was one of the founding members and directors of Greenpeace. In fact, he was officially the eighth founding member. Robert Hunter was the first and his lifetime membership number was 000. His wife Roberta Hunter was second and her membership number was 001. Watson's official membership number was and continues to be 007. In 1972, Watson skippered the tiny Greenpeace boat Astral, and placed it on a collision course with the French helicopter carrier, the Jeanne D'Arc, in Vancouver harbor. This was a protest against French nuclear testing at Mururoa Atoll in the South Pacific. The Jeanne D'Arc was forced to change course. The Astral changed course and kept on target - bow to bow with the warship, forcing the Jeanne D'Arc to stop.In 1973, Watson and David Garrick represented Greenpeace during the occupation of Wounded Knee, South Dakota by the American Indian Movement. Both men served as volunteers for AIM, with Watson working with the medics and filing stories back to Robert Hunter at the Vancouver Sun. Watson left Greenpeace because he felt the original goals of the organization were being compromised, and because he saw a global need to continue direct action conservation activities on the high seas by an organization that would enforce laws protecting marine wildlife. To answer that need, that same year, Watson founded Sea Shepherd Conservation Society - dedicated to research, investigation, and enforcement of laws, treaties, resolutions and regulations established to protect marine wildlife worldwide. In December 1978, with the assistance of Cleveland Amory and the Fund for Animals, Watson purchased a North Atlantic trawler in Britain and converted her into the conservation enforcement vessel Sea Shepherd. The first voyage of the Sea Shepherd was in March of 1979 - destination was the Gulf of St. Lawrence on the Eastern coast of Canada to publicize the Canadian seal hunt by utilizing direct action tactics to save seal pups. Beth Hart, founder of Sutured Specimens is the world's first, at least to my knowledge, Vegan Taxidermist!

Miss Hart, The Vegan Taxidermist, is a manipulator of fabrics and traditional techniques, devotedly hand tailoring grotesque and frivolous items for all humans, vegans, ecowarriors or for those who just like a little mirth served up with their macabre.

She is inspired by almost anything, including, but not exclusively, amongst other things: contradictions and coincidences, natural oddities and genetic engineering, ossuaries and sideshows, surrealism and realism, found objects and curated collections, joie de vivre and memento mori.

Traditionally taught from mother to daughter, Miss Hart began her love affair with sewing machines aged 6, whiling away many hours, drinking many cups of black coffee and honing her craft before studying at Wimbledon School of Art. Since then Miss Hart’s thimbled fingers have been feverishly creating the beautiful and bizarre, her mother thinks she may have created a monster.

Miss Hart’s sewing machine is situated in a ramshackle Victorian cart house in the quintessentially English seaside town of Folkestone, where she can be found designing her own patterns, mostly by frantic trial, manic error, happy accidents and a touch of ingenuity.

Liz started her company, LIZ CAROLINA SKIN CARE, after years of not finding products that she loved, felt good about using and worked for her skin. Being health-oriented her entire life and a label reader, potentially harmful preservatives were big on her list to avoid, as well as inferior ingredients (including fragrances) and those that were harmful to the environment. Another very important criteria for her was finding skin care that was not tested on animals (Cruelty Free Skin Care) and that did not contain animal products. Vegan Skin Care was something that I knew was needed, as it was very difficult to find.

This week Jim chats with Tina Newman a writer, makeup artist and qualified Animal Nursing Assistant living in Suffolk, UK. She shares her home and life with her husband, furry four legged companion Ted the border terrier, and her two own little supervegans; Lyla and Ada.Tina went to buy her daughters some vegan books. She soon realised that there was a lack of children's stories out there with a vegan message. She had already bought some educational books but felt there was a place and a need for a children's story book. So she wrote Vivi the Supervegan, with the hope that it will encourage children to take a stand, empower them to be compassionate and kind. She hopes it will help them understand that they have power with their choices and in educating and inspiring others to make changes.

Everyone with children (or even those without) should get a copy of this book!
