The Dance Monkeys venture to the Isle of Wight from Tenerife every year to perform live for the whole of Cowes Week. We had the pleasure of having them pop by to chat last year and they have come back for another catch up.

Brought up partly in China, Dafydd Fell loved the language and culture but ended up living and working in Taiwan, where he studied their amazing industrial railways.
Wight Forces is a local Isle of Wight charity that was formed by two colleagues, Mandy and Sarah, who became close friends when working together to help improve things for the island's Armed Forces community.
Their mission is to enhance the Armed Forces community on the Isle of Wight by strengthening bonds and providing support, events and resources where needed.
Their vision is to ensure that every member of the Armed Forces community on the Isle of Wight feels supported and valued.
Whether serving or having moved on to other careers, everyone will be able to access the support that they need, particularly during the challenging transition period from military to civilian life.
They have a stall at Chale Show this weekend , so pop along and say hello.
Their next coffee morning is Saturday 15th August 10 am to 12 noon at Albany Lodge, Lugley Street Newport.
And they have a fundraising sky dive on Tuesday 18th August at Sandown airport .

Bowel cancer is the UK’s fourth most common cancer, with around 43,000 people diagnosed every year. Although it’s more common in those over 50, it can affect adults of any age.
You don’t need to wait for a test to act. Some common symptoms to look out for include:
- A change in your normal bowel habits
- Bleeding from your bottom or blood in your poo
- Unexplained weight loss
- A lump or pain in your tummy
- Feeling more tired than usual
- Feeling breathless
Most people with these symptoms will not have bowel cancer, but it’s always worth checking.
Contact your GP practice or surgery – not just your GP – if you notice any of these signs. The earlier bowel cancer is caught, the more treatable it is. Nine out of ten people diagnosed at the earliest stage survive.

Vivian Roberts from Hazeley Manor popped into the studio to chat with us about the Arreton open gardens event taking place this weekend.
Four private gardens in the village of Arreton will open their gates to the public on Sunday 6th July 2025.
The event runs from 12 noon to 4.30pm and will raise funds for Home-Start and the Isle of Wight Scouts.
Visitors can enjoy cream teas and browse a plant stall at Haseley Manor, where toilet facilities will also be available.
Teas will also be served at the Coach House, located between The Old Vicarage and Arreton Church.
Entry to all four gardens costs £5 per adult, with free entry for children.
Gardens will be clearly signposted on the day, and visitors can purchase a programme at the first garden they visit.
Parking is free at Haseley Manor and at the community car park to the right of the White Lion, which serves the Old Vicarage, Coach House and Church.
The No. 8 bus travels through Arreton and stops near all the gardens taking part.
Organisers are encouraging residents and visitors alike to come along and enjoy a relaxing afternoon exploring the gardens in support of good Island causes.

The SVPP is about making sure everyone can benefit from the transition to a smarter, more flexible energy system. By connecting solar panels, battery storage, and smart energy technologies in people’s homes, the project will create a ‘virtual power plant’ — reducing pressure on the grid, cutting carbon emissions, and helping households save money.
But what makes the SVPP different is its focus on fairness. This is not just a technical trial — it’s a community-driven initiative aimed at including those who might otherwise be left behind. Whether you already have solar panels or not, your views matter.

The Royal Yacht Squadron Isle of Wight Foundation marks its 10th anniversary in 2025, having supported around 300 young islanders into training, education and employment ,in the islands proud marine and maritime industries.
Founded in 2015 , the foundation was set up with the single aim of giving back to the Isle of Wight community by empowering local youngsters with the skills and confidence to succeed.

His latest book The Isle of Wight Armada Coast 1588 is jam-packed with 50 years’ of research, charts, maps, photographs and more.

On May 21, 2025 there will be an event in Ventnor, Isle of Wight to commemorate the anniversary of the Armada’s attempted invasion of England in 1588.
History books will need to be re-written as a result of research by Ventnor resident David Baldwin over the past fifty years into the course charted by the Spanish Armada off the Isle of Wight in 1588.
There is now an opportunity to correct the misinterpretation of a letter by George Carey, Captain & Governor of the Isle of Wight, written in Carisbrooke Castle on the same day once the Armada had finally disappeared from sight beyond Selsey Bill.
With the battle off Dunnose key to the outcome, the Isle of Wight can now resume its rightful place in Armada history.
Ventnor is acknowledging these Armadas, North and South of the Island, with presentation of a special ‘Almirante Recalde’ annual competition Cup for bowls matches between Ventnor and Cowes, the first to be played at Ventnor Bowling Club against Plessey Bowls Club of Cowes on Friday morning 23rd May 2025 at ten o’clock.
- The Fundación Nao Victoria in Andalucia are supporting the Armada Coast 1588 by sending the galleon, Santa Maria from Spain to mount gun-salutes off Ventnor’s coastline between St Lawrence and Bonchurch from 2-3pm to mark the opening of the dedicated Coastal and Downs Armada 1588 Heritage Trail on Wednesday 21st May 2025 by Ventnor Town Council, before sailing on to berth at Cowes until the 26th May.

Supporting parent relationships is the Islands commitment to reducing conflict between parents, we want parents to have the tools and knowledge they need to support them through their journey and be part of the positive outcome for their child.
Causes: money, housing, transitions, and life.
Most of us disagree at times in our relationships and not all conflict is damaging. But it can become an issue when it is frequent or poorly managed.
Parental conflict in relationships can occur whether parents are living together or separated. It happens in all types of families:
•Biological parents,
•stepparents,
•foster parents,
•adoptive parents,
•grandparents.
Parental conflict is very different to domestic abuse. No one should ever make you feel threatened or unsafe. If this is how you feel there are many organisations and services that are there to support you.
The impact on children
When children witness adults who shout loudly, argue a lot, or ignore one another frequently for long periods of time, it can negatively impact children’s:
•Self-esteem,
•mental and physical health,
•behaviour,
•academic achievements,
•future relationships with others.
Research suggests this can affect how we parent our children and the quality of time we spend together.
Top three tips for families
1.Try to spend quality time together and remember it doesn’t have to cost money.
2.Talk to each other about how you feel and remember to listen.
3.Consider and ask each other’s views and be willing and open to compromise.
As adults we are role models for our children. Remaining calm and respectful while addressing any disagreements we may have, provides our children with all important life skills. This will help them with future interactions with others.

The Adder (Vipera berus) is a member of the viper family of snakes and one of three types of snakes found in the UK and the only venomous snake in the UK. But don't let this frighten you, there has not been a recorded death from an Adder bite in decades, but that is not to say that you shouldn't be cautious in the event of an encounter. Since 1st March 2022, a pilot delivery service has been available in the West Cowes and Newport area and is running on a trial basis for the next three months
In addition to delivering on behalf of businesses based in the area, “last mile” deliveries from elsewhere on the Isle of Wight will be received at a micro-hub in Cowes and then distributed by e-cargo bike.
In order to make it as risk-free as possible for a wide range of businesses and organisations to try delivery via e-cargo bikes, deliveries will be undertaken free of charge for the period of the trial. They are Fundraising for Wight DASH – which is a local charity that offers domestic abuse support for women and families. So far they have raised £160 and their goal is to raise £2500.
