I met Chris Ruzzin 5 years ago at the first PGA TOUR Rocket Mortgage Classic at Detroit Golf Club. when he was trying to cross some TV cables in his wheelchair. After giving him a hand we had a conversation about how couple places had been very difficult for him to get around and spectate at the tournament, I said I bet they would find it helpful if you reached out and gave them some suggestions.

There is no doubt in my mind he was already thinking that.  And he did follow up ... and over the last few years they have added ADA throughout the golf course.

The picture of Chris is at the ADA platform at the 18th green at Detroit Golf Club.  I think it is cool how it has evolved. The more I get to know Chris I see he is a get it done advocate.

Sean Maekawa, Professional Golfer and Assistant Men’s Golf Coach University of Hawaii-Hilo Vulcans is a guest on Emily T Gail Talk Story. Professional golfer Sean Maekawa, who grew up in Paauilo, Big Island of Hawaii started to play golf in 1999 at the 9 hole Honokaa Golf Course where he received some encouragement from Alan Texeira. Alan, RIP who lived in Honokaa and was a PGA Professional with Waikoloa Beach Golf and that lead Sean to join the Waikoloa Junior Golf Program. He shares how being involved with the Hawaii State Junior Golf Association and Waikoloa Junior Golf where he met PGA Professional Ross Birch. Ross continued to coach Sean helped him win the Big Island Interscholastic Federation Individual golf titles from 2004-2007 while playing for the Honokaa High School team and the Hawaii High School State Championship in his senior year.. I met Sean through Ross when they were guests on my Emily T Gail Talks Golf Show on espnhawaii.com. It was Sean's first time on the radio. I have enjoyed remaining friends with Sean and his parents and being a long time supporter in spirit of his golf journey.

With such stellar high school golf play in Hawaii, Sean earned a golf scholarship to the University of Oregon and played for the Division I Oregon Ducks under PGA Professional Casey Martin. He was a member of the Oregon Ducks Men’s Golf Team in the Annual Amer-Ari Division I Invitational Tournaments at Waikoloa Beach Resort that has a reputation as one of the best Division I tournaments in the country for the quality of players and the hospitality shared by Coach Earl and his coaches and the Vulcan golf booster club and Waikoloa Beach Resort. The Oregon Ducks team had some very strong finishes including winning the NCAA in Sean’s junior year.

After college Sean turned professional and played on the Gateway Tour and other mini tours. He wanted to explore coaching which led to an opportunity to be a volunteer coach with his former college coach Casey Martin for the Oregon Ducks. Sean says he “discovered he enjoyed coaching at college level having been a college player. He wanted to share with others what he has learned being on both sides of the ball”. That led him back to the Big Island where he could be Asst. Professional at Waikoloa Beach Resort Golf under PGA Professional Kevin Ginoza. Kevin had played for the Division II Pac West University of Hawaii-Hilo Vulcan Golf team and has been an Assistant Coach with his former coach Earl Tamiya along with Troy Tamiya and Sean joined them as well as Assistant Coach. He is grateful to be back home with the opportunity to be a Asst. Golf Coach while raising a family with his wife Ashley. They have two young children Kamden and Aliah. Sean credits the encouragement he has received from mentors, his parents Schoen and Monica and his sister Elisye as he pursued golf as what kept him motivated to follow his dream of a golf career.

Waikoloa Beach Resort recently were hosts for their Annual Division II Dennis Rose Invitational Tournament with top NCAA Division II men’s and women’s golf teams. Dennis Rose, also a mentor for Sean was long time Director of Golf at Waikoloa and president at Waikoloa who passed away at the age of 59 in 2007 after a two year battle with cancer. The men played at Waikoloa Beach Resort Golf and the women played at Hapuna Golf Course. at Mauna Kea Resort. Sean talks about the Dennis Rose Invitational and Vulcan team experiences this year who are ranked in the top 50 Division II teams in the country. That is their best ranking ever and they will be the only Division II team in the The Amer-Ari coming up in February Past winners and participants of the Amer-Ari have included Tiger Woods, Notah Begay, Matt Kucher, Jordan Spieth, Matthew Wolf and many others who have gone on to careers on the PGA TOUR. The Division II Vulcan’s Men’s team and Coach Earl and Asst Coaches Kevin, Troy and Sean and the team are focused on holding their own. Scott Head, VP Operations Waikoloa Beach Resort is sure they will also be great hosts and add to their reputation as one of the most prestigious and fun Division I Invitational Tournaments in the country.

Welcome to Emily T Gail Talk Story ...August 2022. Sharing some thought about my enthusiasm for the PGA TOUR Rocket Mortgage Classic in Detroit at Detroit Golf Club last week with one of my favoirtie players Tony Finau winning. Tony used to be at Turtle Bay here in Hawaii.

In this first show that I have recorded in a while I share some of my own stories.  Correction due regarding my Sam Saunders story. Sam is Arnold Palmer's grandson. I said son. One of the stories I told was about seeing Sam when he played in the Rocket Mortgage Classic year one (2019).

I first met Sam when he was about 6 years old and Arnold used to fly his own Cesna Citation if I remember correctly  here for the Mauna Lani Senior Skins on ABC that ran before the Super Bowl. Used to meet Arnold and his guests and family when they would arrive at the airport.- Arnold in the pilots seat. Arnold's son in law Roy would caddy for Arnold. Sam is son of Roy and Arnold's daughter Amy. . About the time I met Arnold I met Mark Rolfing, who at the time was with ABC. Now with NBC/Golf Channel. That was well over 25 years ago and Mark and his wife Debi have been friends ever since and over the years been very good to me. Mark always has time to talk story with me.

Mark was at the Rocket Mortgage Classic with Golf Channel last two years and has been great about letting me lead some of my fellow Detroit media friends to him. We both enjoy weaving Detroit love and Hawaii aloha.

At the end of this show is a talk story Mark and I did in January at the Senior PGA TOUR Mitsubishi Electric Championship at Hualalai here on the Big Island of Hawaii.  Mark and I talk about his long time efforts to grow junior golf here in Hawaii with the recent merging of the First Tee Hawaii and HSJGA.  I was a junior golfer in the 1960's and that is why I have been able to shape a way to stay around the game in my own way. I love how Mark acknowledges my doing it my way. I learned it from him. He has been a pioneer in many ways.

Thanks for listening. Aloha.

Kelly Fliear, Tournament Manager, Mitsubishi Electric Championship at Hualalai gives an overview of the monies raised for Big Island Charities from the PGA TOUR Champions event that has been hosted by Hualalai Resort for 26 years. It will take place Jan. 20-22 with a field of players that include 7 current World Golf Hall of Fame members like Fred Couples, Hale Irwin, Tom Watson, and Vijay Singh.

Well over a million dollars has been raised for non profits and charities. The wonderful 400+ volunteer effort is under the Rotary Club of Kona with Volunteer Co-Chairs Kris Hazard and Larry Webb and in turn the Rotary Club of Kona Community Foundation receives monies each year that go into our community.

The Daniel Sayre Foundation is also a beneficiary of the MEC. Created by Dr. Frank and Laura Sayre the Daniel Sayre Foundation has been purchasing rescue equipment for the Hawaii County Fire Department for the past 20 years in memory of their son Daniel who lost his life in a hiking accident in Polulu Valley. Big Island Junior Golf receives funds from the MEC as well and the organization has been able to bring many juniors into the game of golf. And the Hualalai Resort Hualalai Ohana also receives funds that are used to help those who are part of the Hualalai team from scholarships to support with health issues.

Called Jack Berry the other day as the PGA Tour Aloha Swing begins in Hawaii. We talked golf and little bit of everything. Always love talking with Jack Berry who was a long time Detroit News golf writer who covered over 100 major golf tournaments and 43 Masters. In face he had a hand in creating access in locker room for female reporters at the Master.

In recent years even at 91 years of age Jack is still telling and writing stories with my along long time friends and publishers of Michigan Golfer Art and Jeannie McCafferty. the one responsible for getting the band of female reporters at the Masters lifted. A member of the Michigan golf Hall of Fame Jack was a leader and pioneer in promoting Women's golf and amateur golf. I met Jack in the 1960's when I was playing competitive junior golf. We became friends over the years and in many ways Jack was a mentor. I love that he attributes his becoming a marathon runner to his running in our Emily Detroit Runs through the streets of Detroit in the 1970's-80's.

Jack shares stories from the 1945 Detroit Tigers World Series win over the Chicago Cubs when his father was the Detroit Tigers Traveling Secretary . A member of the Michigan Golf Hall of Fame Jack was a leader and pioneer in promoting Women's Golf and Amateur Golf.

Jack shares a lot of fun stories from his days of covering the Red Wings when they were playing at Olympia and only 6 teams in the league. I like documenting stories from others that weave into my own stories ... and keep the thread of history tied into the present. As the Detroit Historical Museum would say where Past is Present .

Also these conversations with Jack remind how just how special our fun long time friendship has been.

I was so pleased to have a conversation with Mark Rolfing, NBC/Golf Channel Analyst few days before he heads to Whistling Straits in Wisconsin site of this 43rd Ryder Cup. While the 43rd Ryder Cup in matches take place Sept. 24-26, beginning Monday Sept. 20 4pm EST Mark will begin his Mark Rolfing Live from the Ryder Cup. which is his favorite tournament to cover. this Monday at 4pm EST. He covered his first Ryder Cup in 1991 for ABC. It is his favorite tournament to cover and he has some interesting takes on this years event.

Mark has seen a lot, has accomplished a lot outside of his broadcasting life which began as a result of playing in a professional golf tournament he had created at Kapalua on Maui. After Don Ohlmeyer who was producer with ABC/ESPN saw him in the interview booth encouraged him to get into the business and offered him a job.

That tournament site at Kapalua where he had created the professional tournament has evolved. We now know it as Tournament of Champions played on the renowned Plantation Course that Mark was involved developing. USA Today labeled Mark “TV sport’s best on course golf reporter”. Long time sports reporter Ann Miller calls Mark’s rise to the top of network golf television a unique and intriguing story and that is what I asked Mark to talk about in this interview.

Mark and his wife have made a difference in others lives with their Mark and Debi Rolfing Production Company and the Mark and Debi Charitable Foundation and their dear to their heart “Angel Babies” foster program. Mark is the reason there is a Maui Basketball Classic and it is televised every year. I could go on and on and we sort of do that in this fun conversation as they always are. I’ve been interviewing Mark for over 20 years …. Grateful that he always makes time for me. Been one of my biggest supporters in my years of covering golf.

I met Vance Patrick at the farewell retirement party at the Detorit Historical Museum for Bob and Mary Ann Bury celebrating Bob's 16 years as CEO and Executive Director and their efforts as a team.

I had read about the reopening of the The Belle Isle Aquarium and when Vance Patrick who was at the helm along with others of getting the Aquarium reopened said come let me show you around I did so a few days later. As we were talking I decided to turn on my recorder and I am glad I did.

As always I record and no editing. It is what it is and I feel this was one very worthwhile conversation with Vance. I appreciate he took the time to educate me.

They get up to 5,000-6,000 people over the weekend who come enjoy the free admission and easy to walk through Belle Isle Aquarium. It was a steady stream of all ages coming through as we walked around.

Some history of the Belle Isle public aquarium located in Belle Isle Park in Detroit, Michigan. Designed by noted architects George D. Mason and Albert Kahn,[5] it opened on August 18, 1904, and was the oldest continually operating public aquarium in North America when it closed on April 3, 2005.[2] The aquarium reopened to the public on August 18, 2012, and is now run entirely by volunteers.[6] The 10,000-square-foot (930 m2) historic building features a single large gallery with an arched ceiling covered in green glass tile to evoke an underwater feeling.[1][7]

The aquarium was operated by the Detroit Zoological Society prior to the 2005 closure. It is currently operated by the Belle Isle Conservancy.

August 3, 2005, Detroit citizens voted to reopen the aquarium by an overwhelming margin (88% in favor, 12% opposed).[11] However, the vote was non-binding and the aquarium remained closed. In 2010, supporters of the aquarium were still trying to find donors to help defray the building's operating costs.[11]

Although the building was closed between 2005 and 2012, goldfish and koi from an outside pond were housed in the aquarium during the winter.[11] Each year in February, the aquarium opened for a day for the annual "Shiver on the River,"[11] a fund raising event to promote public support of Belle Isle non-profit groups including the Friends of Belle Isle Aquarium.[2]

On 14 August 2012, The Belle Isle Conservancy, a non-profit volunteer group established in 2011 from the merger of the Friends of Belle Isle Aquarium and other Belle Isle non-profit groups, announced the re-opening of the aquarium on a limited basis. The aquarium was reopened on 18 August 2012, the 108th anniversary of its opening.[citation needed] The aquarium is normally open Friday-Sunday However hours due to covid check their site. https://www.belleisleconservancy.org/belle-isle-aquarium

It was a year ago June 21, 2019. The Aloha Friday Ohana Gathering at Detroit Foundation Hotel and live worldwide Broadcast with Michael Patrick Shiels Michigan’s Big Show. Started at 6am in the Detroit Foundation Apparatus Room.

Michael is a long time friend. He has won many awards with his Michigan's Big Show and his extensive travel and golf writing as author and journalist. Some back story on why I wanted to do this live broadcast with Michael at Detroit Foundation Hotel. Michael's mentor was the legendary JP McCarthy, WJR Radio. In the 1970's-80's JP and WJR were was very supportive as they still are of my efforts in Detroit. Michael was JP's Producer after I left Detroit. Michael and I actually met here in Hawaii in the 1990's as he is a wonderful ambassador for Hawaii and has written extensively and broadcast from Hawaii. I mention that because I have been weaving my Detroit community and Hawaii community for years with a lot of friends and ohana.
There are a lot of threads that weaved nicely over last couple years as Bob Lambert, GM Detroit Foundation Hotel had been so open to sharing ideas and ways to showcase the community space and spirit I had learned to appreciate at Detroit Foundation Hotel. So Michael and Bob and his team at DFH and a whole bunch of us I like to call Ohana shared a wonderful morning last June 21. Michael let me line up all the guests that included who we had partnered with at DFH like Empty Bowls Detroit, Rainbow Connection and the Detroit Historical Society.
We also showcased the Rocket Mortgage Classic and the monies being raised for the Detroit community as Michael talked with Steve Wilke (RIP) Hour Magazine and GAM and RJ King dBusiness who had just released his new book, Detroit: Engine of America. Larry Alexander ...DMCVB aka VisitDetroit was a guest and talked about all the efforts in Detroit. Tony Michaels, Parade Company joined us and talked about the Ford Fireworks that were coming up the following week. .
Watching many of the summer events being cancelled and the Detroit Foundation Hotel being temporarily closed is difficult .... however the good efforts of so many of our ohana going on in many places in the community and hopefully DFH will be open again soon.

I loved listening to this broadcast the other day. I heard Michael Patrick say the crowd and energy and spirit of the day reminded him of JP McCarthy's Focus Radio Show parties. What a compliment. While it was a year ago I remember so well how happy we all were about the day and how much gratitude I had for all that helped make it such a memorable day. Bob Lambert and Jennifer Lee and the DFH team at the time, Darraugh Collins, Michael Patrick and like always Colleen Robar helping us out in so many ways.

So that is why I am replaying our Broadcast.

I had my talk story with David S. Ishii at the Waikoloa Beach Resort at the 2019 HHSAA (Hawaii High School Athletic Association) Boys Golf Championship. Waikoloa Beach Resort was host to the 36 hole championship played at Waikoloa Beach Resort Kings' Course on the Big Island of Hawaii. The girls championship was earlier in the week.

The HHSAA is sponsored by David S. Ishii Foundation. Scott Head, VP Waikoloa Beach Resort calls David Ishii the best player to ever come out of Hawaii and says David's support for high school players has had a huge impact on the sport. Waikoloa Beach Resort is always proud to host junior, high school, college and professional tournaments and very happy the high school state championships were played at Waikoloa Kings Course in 2019 as it rotates from island to island each year.

Nice touch with David Ishii being on hand for the tournament. David, and his wife Lorraine and son presented the awards.

Mid Pac's Jake Sequin won the individual state title and my friend Ethan Jaehn, a freshman playing for Coach Lee Kakawa at Kealakehe was third overall and low Big Island player. He edged out 5th place finisher from Kamehameha-Hawaii senior Pono Yanagi, the BIIF champion, by a stroke for top Big Islander honors. Hawaii Baptist won the team title with a 42-over 618. Second place was Mid Pacific (652). Iolani was third (655) and Waiakea (657) was close behind in fourth

Scott also shares the commitment by Waikoloa Beach Resort to host junior, high school, college and professional tournaments.

Waikoloa Beach Resort is a planned community and I have worked with them for a long time. I have admired how they have evolved gracefully during the ever present development on the Big Island. The Queens Marketplace and Kings' Shop serving locals and visitors everyday with great stores, restaurants and Hawaiiana entertainment and cultural events. Scott and I talk about how the hotels, condos, time shares, beaches, golf courses, hiking trails are there for all of us to enjoy. I sure do.

Golf legend Jack Nicklaus will help the Golf Association of Michigan (GAM) celebrate its Centennial this year. He'll headline a GAM Foundation gala fundraiser on Monday, June 17 at Oakland Hills CC, one of the original 14 clubs to form what would eventually become the GAM.

The event will include golf on the famous South course, dinner and the fireside chat with Jack. Dinner only tickets are available at $300. The GAM 100 Celebration benefits the GAM Foundation including its Youth on Course program which allows kids ages 6 to 18 to play golf for five dollars or less at participating courses.

HOUR Media is the presenting sponsor of the GAM 100 Celebration. Again Dinner only and the fireside chat with Jack Nicklaus tickets are still available at $300 and a limited amount of golf spots are available where you get to play your own ball on the iconic South Course at Oakland Hills.

It was Oakland Hills where in 1961 Jack Nicklaus was fourth in the U.S. Open as a 21-year-old amateur. In 1991 he won the US Senior Open on the South course at Oakland Hills in a playoff with Chi Chi Rodriguez. On a side note Chi Chi's nephew Juan Rodriguez, Aloha Section PGA member is my neighbor and a wonderful person and player.
Go to GAM.org for info about Dinner only tickets at $300 and the limited number of golf spots or sponsor opportunities or contact Steve Wilke at swilke@gam.org or 248-752-8842.

Steve and I also talk about the GAM participating in the PGA TOUR Rocket Mortgage Classic Birdies for Charities. The program is centered around the first-ever PGA TOUR event in Detroit June 25-30 at the Detroit Golf Club. Rickie Fowler, Dustin Johnson and Bubba Watson are among the PGA Tour stars who will be in the field.

Donations can be made by a per birdie pledge or by a flat rate donation. And donations received by May 31 will be entered to win a VIP Package for Two to the Rocket Mortgage Classic. The VIP Package includes two Honorary Observer positions for Saturday. Believe me Honorary Observer at a PGA tournament is very cool!

The 2nd Annual Detroit Heritage Theatre Festival-2019 Friday May 17-Sunday May 19 ...

"It's ALL About Detroit"

Founded by Karen Chappelle who grew up in Detroit and after years away from Detroit and a career in Law has come back to her roots in Detroit and her love of the Arts since she was a young girl because of the plays she got to be involved in with the Detroit Parks and Rec.

Here is an overview....

Detroit Heritage Theatre Festival-2019
"It's ALL About Detroit"
1
Welcome to Detroit’s Newest Theatrical Event.

This year the Detroit Heritage Theatre Festival (DHTF) continues its tradition celebrating Detroit’s rich heritage. The Opening Play takes us back to a more genteel period in our history; Nacirema- American spelled backwards. In this year of the woman, we share the work of playwright Pearl Cleage, who spent many years growing up here in Detroit.

A Celebration of Art for Detroit, by Detroit.
The Detroit Heritage Theatre Festival proudly invites playwrights of all ages to showcase their talents during an amazing and immersive new festival!
An experience like none other, participants are invited to present work that inspires and innovates; intentionally subverting the traditional narratives about Detroit.
The festival is designed to utilize as many of the spaces in the cultural corridor as possible, in addition to reaching out and including the oldest, newest, professional, amateur and student artists. The festival will take place over three days.

Day one: May 17, The festival opening and reception takes place at The Players Club, 3321 East Jefferson Avenue Detroit, MI. The Players Club was designated as a Michigan Heritage site in 1975, built in 1925. With a four story high stage and auditorium accommodating 200, a kitchen, dressing rooms, basement storage, prop rooms and a formal meeting room on upper floor. This is a private club and not traditionally open to the public.
The commonality of mission, using art to educate and engage the community has formed a wonderful home for DHTF Opening Night festivities.
The mission of the Detroit Heritage Theatre Festival coincided with the current mission of the Players club for community outreach. We will utilize the services of the Capuchin kitchen, whose services to the poor and under served in Detroit and help restore their lives is also consistent with the mission of the transformative nature of art.

Day Two: May 18, 2019 our venue is the Historic and beautiful Detroit Main Public Library located at 5201 Woodward Ave. Detroit Michigan. The Detroit Public Library enlightens and empowers people and artists by providing diverse and dynamic pathways to literacy and learning.

This year we will launch the very first Dominique Morisseau monologue competition. This is more than a competition. It’s a workshop with teaching and professional artists, and an introduction to one of the gifted playwrights of our generation. . .from OUR hometown! Jack Berry has covered many milestone sports experiences including 40 Masters ... he is in Michigan Golf Hall of Fame.

I talked to him at conclusion of round 3 of the 2019 Masters and asked him what he was feeling as he was watching the days events unfold ... and his thoughts before the final round Sunday.

I've known and admired Jack Berry for 50+ years. I was a junior golfer aspiring to play on the LPGA. Never was good enough however did play in LPGA events in the 1960's as amateur as you could in those days with a 5 handicap or less.

Jack wrote about my amateur golf in the 60's. He was a mentor to me in ways he never knew as I got into writing about golf and having radio shows like my Emily T Gail Talks Golf & Other Sports on esphawaii.com for long time.

I started calling Jack for interviews and having him share his stories and knowledge of the game. I've learned so much for Jack. He still covers golf with GLSP published by my long time friend Art McCafferty. Art also publishes Michigan Runner who I credit for the popularity of our Emily Detroit Runs in the 1970'-80's. Jack used to run in the Emily Detroit Runs.

We talk about the PGA TOUR Rocket Mortgage Classic coming to Detroit end of June. Will be held at Detroit Golf Club, the only private club in the Detroit City limits. Lots of golf history there. Personal history for me as I played Junior and Women's Amateur events at Detroit golf in the 1960'-70's. Horton Smith, who was one of the first to win the Masters was the pro at Detroit Golf at the time.

The photo of Jack and I was when he was visiting Hawaii ... in between his hikes and active visit we met up on the seawall on the ocean in Kailua Village across the street from Kona Plaza where I lived.

I have always been a big fan of my brother Max's poems and song writing and piano playing ... as I have been of Max's twin Mary and my twin sister Edee creativity as musicians.

Over the years if they were playing music I was taping if I could....

As I'm curating of what I have documented over the years of family moments and public moments I keep finding so many heartwarming moments ... on video, in photos, news stories, audio recordings like this audio recording (on cassette) from probably 20 years ago.

I'm grateful for the many moments of wonderful memories with my big brother Max and his family and some of my siblings at Max's home in Malibu when we would hang out. Many times Max would share share his original music and poems with me. I would always cry feeling his words .... and watching him play. On this day his twin Mary was there and they were sharing their music with each other ...

Sure glad I turned on my recorder 20 years or whenever it was. No doubt I sobbed when they were singing and sharing that day just as I did a few weeks ago when pulled this cassette tape out of a box.

Wanted to share it ...

Who is Jack Berry? He's a long time dear friend of mine. He was a Sports Writer with the Detroit New for many years. He was awarded the 2007 PGA Lifetime Achievement Award in Journalism. He watched me grow up as a pretty good Junior Golfer in Michigan in the 60'-70's. Wrot some nice things about me and I love that he ran in our Emily Detroit Run's in the 70'-80'.

I took this story about Jack off the Golf Wire from 2007. What a career he has had and he is still very active with his writing and video story telling in many ways including with my good friend Art McCafferty's GLSP Michigan Golfer.

Jack Berry, the 2007 PGA Lifetime Achievement Award in Journalism, was the 18th individual to be recognized with this Award. The award honors members of the media for their steadfast promotion of golf.In 1945, the year the Detroit Tigers beat the Chicago Cubs in the World Series Jack Berry's father was the Detroit Tigers Traveling Secretary.

PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. – Jack Berry, of W. Bloomfield, Mich., whose five decades of reporting featured more than 70 of golf’s major Championships, as well as the promotion of the PGA Professional, has been named recipient of the 2007 PGA Lifetime Achievement Award in Journalism. Berry is the 18th individual to be recognized with this Award.

Berry, 75, will be honored April 4, 2007, at the 35th Golf Writers Association of America Annual Spring Dinner and Awards Ceremony at the Savannah Rapids Pavilion in Augusta, Ga.

"It is with a great deal of pride that The PGA of America presents this award to Jack Berry, a professional who has enlightened us all by both his attention to detail and wit, and has captured the best in the game of golf in his work," said PGA of America President Brian Whitcomb. "Mr. Berry has spent his journalistic career covering the landmark events, but he also has been a tireless servant of the game by promoting local golf and elevating the PGA Professional’s vocation to the general public."

Born in Detroit, Berry began a lifelong love affair with sports as a baseball fan, following his father, Clair, who was the traveling secretary for the Detroit Tigers. Jack Berry picked up a golf club, his father’s wooden-shaft driver, for the first time in high school. He learned the game through the late PGA Professional Chet Jawor, who was PGA head professional for Detroit’s six municipal golf courses.

"I soon became a big fan of the PGA Professional," said Berry. "I always liked what they did for the game and all were good guys and completely different than the Tour professional. I was fortunate that the two newspapers where I worked (Detroit Free Press and Detroit News) had a good tradition of local golf coverage.

I enjoyed the opportunity to work with people in the community in covering golf. I am very honored to receive this Award, considering those who have preceded me."

Berry attended Marquette University from 1949-1951, and also served two years in the U.S. Army from 1952-54. Upon his discharge, he finished his college education and graduated from Michigan State University in 1956.

His journalism career began as a correspondent for United Press (1956-59), where he distinguished himself through his versatility, covering professional and local sports as the wire service’s sports editor for the state of Michigan.

Berry joined the Detroit Free Press in 1959, and spent the next 12 years on the sports staff. He marked his first Tour event when he covered the 1958 Buick Open in Grand Blanc, Mich.

His professional sports "beat" featured the Detroit Red Wings of the then-six-team National Hockey League; and he marked his first major Championship in 1961, at the U.S. Open at Oakland Hills Country Club in Bloomfield Township, Mich.

Berry joined the Detroit News in 1971, and remained its premier golf writer through 1993, during which time he developed a relationship with Michigan PGA Professionals and the Free Press Junior Golf Program, which collaborated with the Detroit Recreation Department. It is a program "that was a forerunner to today’s First Tee in providing opportunities for young people to join the game," said Berry.

In 1984, Berry was named the 27th president of the Golf Writers Association of America, making him the second journalist from the Detroit News (preceded by John Walter in 1958-59) to hold that position. Berry also served as GWAA secretary-treasurer from 1990-98.

Following his Detroit News’ career, Berry became one of the most prolific golf freelance writers, with columns and features appearing in PGA Magazine, Chicagoland Golf and the Michigan Golfer. He is the recipient of the 1997 Golf Association of Michigan Distinguished Service Award. In 2003, he became the second journalist inducted into the Michigan Golf Hall of Fame, joining the late Walter. Among the members of the Michigan Hall of Fame are legendary five-time PGA Champion and founding PGA member Walter Hagen, and 1953 PGA Champion Walter Burkemo.

Berry marked the 1986 Masters, when Jack Nicklaus conquered Augusta National Golf Club at age 46, as not only his most memorable golf event as a reporter, but also a defining moment in his life. Berry nearly died following the Masters. He was stricken with acute viral myocarditis two weeks earlier at the Players Championship. After enduring great pain and energy loss during the Masters, he arrived home to enter the emergency room of the local hospital.

"I arrived with heart, liver and kidney failure, and in shock," said Berry.

"I almost made the final six-footer."

Some two years later, Berry’s recovery was complete, as he competed in the New York City Marathon.

His reporting has also ventured into horse racing, where he chronicled Secretariat’s path to the 1973 Triple Crown; to Super Bowl VII, where the Miami Dolphins became the NFL’s first and only unbeaten championship team at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum in 1973; and to Lake Placid, N.Y., where the 1980 United States Olympic Hockey Team upset the squad from the former Soviet Union in the famous "Miracle on Ice."

The PGA Lifetime Achievement Award in Journalism, first presented in 1989, honors members of the media for their steadfast promotion of golf. Past Award winners include: Dick Taylor, Herbert Warren Wind, Jim Murray, Frank Chirkinian, Bob Green, Dan Jenkins, Furman Bisher, Jack Whitaker, Dave Anderson, Ken Venturi, Jim McKay, Kaye Kessler, Nick Seitz, Renton Laidlaw, Bob Verdi, Al Barkow and Ron Green Sr.

The Award selection committee is composed of representatives from The PGA of America, PGA Tour, USGA, LPGA Tour, Champions Tour, European Tour, Golf Superintendents Association of America, National Golf Course Owners Association, American Society of Golf Course Architects, National Golf Foundation and past recipients.

Emily met up with her long time friends John and Judy Collins Co-Founders of the Ironman. Emily met John and Judy when she and Pooh came from Detrit to Kona in 1981 to participate in the Ironman. John and Judy Co-founders of the Ironman back in 1978 were in Kona with and their daughter Kirsten and son Michael for the 40th Anniversary of the Ironman. Michael was not with us for the show as he was getting ready to participate in the Ironman.

We thought it would be a good time for John and Judy to get on record how the Ironman started and dispel the myth that it all started in a bar, as a challenge among a bunch of navy seals.

Thanks for watching.

Colleen and I were having a catch up conversation in her office at Robar PR on Burns and Jefferson ...

More of my reaching out to her about some of my visions for how to keep weaving and being a part of the Detroit community ...

Detroit Homecoming has been the last few years a wonderful support system for what I am doing in and for Detroit and for myself as I'm one of the small entrepreneurs/artists waking up every day working at figuring out how to be an expat who continues to contribute while creating some income for what I do in Detroit.

So I thought I would have Colleen share a few words about the 2018 Detroit Homecoming and spur of the moment turned on my voice memo to record.

While it was educational, informative which I love because I learn from the speakers and panel discussions things about Detroit I don't know and should know that would take me so much more time to learn on my own. It's a chance to meet and reconnect with expats and locals and it was also a lot of fun.

My heart is still filled with joy from the party at The Corner at Michigan and Trumbull aka Tiger Stadium on the Thursday evening. It got to do batting practice and Bettye LaVette an American soul singer-songwriter raised in Detroit whose 2005 album I've Got My Own Hell to Raise brought her deserved acclaim gave an intimate performance I'll never forget.

Colleen talks about the many new ways we were able to see neighborhoods and so many of the ways that so many are doing so much in Detroit.

I've been a huge admirer of Lisa's efforts since they rolled out MOGO Detroit which is part of Downtown Detroit Partnership whose efforts under the leadership of Eric Larson I also admire.

I have loved watching the people over the last few years on HandleBar Detroit. I see them when I am riding my bike around town. Singing, laughing and having a good time as they are going around downtown or whatever area the group chooses to pedal to ...

So finally his Sunday I've got a group going out for couple hours... related to something with the Detroit Historical Society and Detroit Foundation Hotel.

Brian Lindsey, owner with his brother Steve has been so helpful. I stopped by and met up with Brian and while we were talking I turned on my recorder and he shared how they started HandleBar Detroit and some interesting pieces to their back story.

.... what is neat is you can organize your own group or go as single ad join up with others.

I met Vance Patrick at the farewell retirement party at the Detroit Historical Museum for Bob and Mary Ann Bury celebrating Bob's 16 years as CEO and Executive Director and their efforts as a team.

The aquarium was reopened on 18 August 2012, the 108th anniversary of its opening.[citation needed] The aquarium is open Friday-Sunday 10am-4pm.

Paul and Jennifer Eisenstein and I met up at the Fish and The Hog in Waimea on Hawaii Island. I've known Paul Eisenstein, Automotive Journalist TheDetroitBureau.com since the late 1970's in Detroit when he was with WXYZ Channel 7 and a regular at Emily's Across the Street. However, we had not seen each other for 35+ years. Paul & Jennifer were on the Kona Coast for the roll out of the 2018 Hyundai Kona at the beautiful Mauna Kea Resort. I call Kona home. I call Detroit home. I feel a part of both communities and like many Detroiters who I meet up with here on Hawaii Island it was fun to learn they too have been here enough to feel very at home. So talking about Kona and the new 2018 Hyundai Kona was fun. And very interesting to hear Paul share what has to be considered when car names are being created.

I've listened on line for years to Paul's automotive related conversations from all parts of the world. It was very fun to finally reconnect in person and meet Jennifer and feel the Detroit bond while in Kona.

While they got out of the snow in Michigan to be in Hawaii and cover the roll out of the 2018 Hyundai Kona, it was winter like weather in Hawaii that week. I thought Paul shared that in a polite manner while also describing well all the different climates we have here on Hawaii Island and let it work for him while test driving the new Hyundai Kona. This is Paul's lead in to the story about the Hyundai Kona on his website TheDetroitBureau.com

by Paul Esisenstein ...

So much for palm trees swaying in a sunny, South Pacific breeze. The wind is blowing, all right, but the normally desert-like Kona Coast is anything but warm and dry as we head out for a day’s drive across the Big Island of Hawaii.

Actually, we’re just fine with that, as it gives us a chance to put the new 2019 Hyundai Kona through its paces as we explore one of the most ecologically diverse places on the planet. By the time we wrap up we’ll experience just about every sort of weather one can imagine short of snow – and at the top of Saddle Road, which cuts between the currently dormant Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa volcanoes, even a blizzard is possible.

We’ve spent nearly 12 hours in the air flying to, yes, Kona, Hawaii to see just how well the new Kona crossover lives up our expectations. Hyundai was slow to recognize one of the most dramatic shifts in the automotive market, the rapid shift from sedans and coupes to SUVs and crossover-utility vehicles. As it rolls into dealer showrooms across the U.S. in the coming weeks, it becomes the Korean brand’s third utility vehicle, joining the compact Tucson and midsize Santa Fe – with an assortment of others, including the hydrogen-powered Nexo, to follow.

On a personal note:

I signed up for Paul's at the TheDetroitBureau.com. I'm new to his website. After seeing all the stories I get what he means when he says he loves what he does because he is not just talking and covering stories about cars. So many subjects and interesting people that are part of the tapestry of all the back stories related to the automotive industry he shares on the site. I love learning.

Gary Lichtman, Director of Media Relations University of Detroit-Mercy has over recent years educated me not just about the University however about how many alumni are doing good things in Detroit. Like Tom Page a long time mutual friend.

Each year, University of Detroit Mercy honors seven alumni — one from each of the colleges and schools at the University — with a Spirit of Detroit Mercy award. Tom is one of the honorees this year from the College of Liberal Arts & Education. These honorees are alumni who have marked themselves with distinction in their career and in their personal life.
I thought it was a good time to catch up and talk with Tom.

Tom and I talk story about his love of Detroit, his committment to give back to University of Detroit/Mercy and his family roots in Detroit. He shares having been with the Detroit Police Dept., and the challenge and success he experience of going to LAPD as a result of a layoff in Detroit. And it's obvious since he has come back to Detroit, he continues to do what he can to make a difference in Detroit and contribute to his University of Detroit/Mercy in gratitude for the education he received in many ways.
.

Meanwhile... this is a good read I think. I took it from the udmercy.edu/alumni page....

Thomas E. Page describes himself as a regular guy — “Call me Tom,” he says — but he’s much more than that.
The former Detroit and Los Angeles police officer — now retired — has taken on the roles of ad hoc ambassador for the city of Detroit and promoter and devotee of bicycling in the city. These two activities keep him very busy.
He is also a major booster of University of Detroit Mercy. He earned a bachelor’s degree in Psychology in 1971 and a master’s degree in Urban Studies in ’76 from University of Detroit and he credits his education for his success.

“One of the things I learned here is that education is much more than knowledge of facts,” Page said. “A person needs to be able to adapt to changes in technology, in society and to think for themselves. Things change so rapidly in society today that we have to look at things in a circular way, not a linear way, because one issue is affected by so many other things — it’s not just ‘this happened then that happened.’ ”
That kind of global thinking, he said, made him a good police officer. His career in law enforcement began with the Detroit Police Department before he headed out to Los Angeles where he worked for about 20 years with the LAPD. It was there he began work on a new initiative, helping to create a standardized, effective approach to combat drug-impaired driving.
“It became very important for police to know what they were dealing with in terms of drug use,” Page said. He helped create the first formal Drug Recognition Expert (DRE) curriculum for police officers and has taught drug influence recognition and criminal justice topics to police and prosecutors across the country and around the world.

In his current role as a law enforcement consultant and DRE Emeritus, Page regularly provides expert testimony on the impairing effects of alcohol and legal and illegal drugs on driving in courts around the United States. Page has written extensively about techniques officers can use to determine what types of drugs a person may be under the influence of.
After retiring from the LAPD as the Officer-in-Charge of the department’s Drug Recognition Expert program, Page realized it was time to put his Urban Studies degree to use and moved back to Detroit’s Midtown area.
“I saw all the things that were happening in Detroit and started to get more involved, and I wanted to vote here,” he said. “I wanted a say in what was going on.”

As he reacquainted himself with his hometown, he began hosting bicycling events around the city — he’d long been a bicycling enthusiast — and getting involved with neighborhood organizations, he found himself drawn back to Detroit Mercy’s McNichols Campus. He served on the Board of Advisors for the College of Liberal Arts & Education and attends many University-sponsored events. He even makes sure some of his bike tours make their way to campus, just to show it off to people who don’t know its beauty.

He recently showed just how he feels about the University and its students by giving two significant gifts designed with the same goal in mind.
“I’ve realized what’s important to me,” he said. “I’m secure; I don’t need more stuff. But what I could do is to create a legacy that gets carried on at this University, which I care deeply about.”

One gift is designed to have an immediate impact on the current student experience. Each year for five years, Page has pledged to support a project designed to build an energized student body and campus. Last year, his gift paid for two bicycle repair stations on the McNichols campus; this year, the gift will be used to establish a bicycle loan program. Four bicycles, specially designed by Detroit Bikes in Detroit Mercy colors, will be available on campus for students to borrow. The details of this program are still a work in progress, but the bicycles will be ready to use this fall.
This year’s gift also supports a dean-designated initiative in the College of Liberal Arts & Education as well as the women’s soccer team.

In addition to Page’s generous five-year annual gift commitment, he has also included the University in his estate planning, leaving a significant and transformational gift to enhance student life on the McNichols Campus.
“This gift is in support of the morality, the ethics, the very DNA of Detroit Mercy,” Page said. “This place serves a very wonderful purpose for our community and our society, and we need to support that.”
“I want the students on campus to feel the same way about this University that I do,” Page said. “I want them to know there are alumni who care about them and care about this city.”

“Tom Page’s significant gifts to University of Detroit Mercy are reflections of the love he has for his alma mater and the high value he has placed on the education he received,” said Detroit Mercy President Antoine M. Garibaldi, Ph.D. “His generous ways of supporting current and future students will undoubtedly inspire others to express appreciation for their successful and boundless careers.”

Page acknowledges there is yet another motive for the gifts: To provide inspiration.
“I still have many friends — many of them Phi Sigma Kappa fraternity brothers — I met at the University, and we’re at the stage in our lives where it’s time for some of them to give back to the school because of what it has meant to them,” Page said. “I want them to say, ‘If Tom Page can do this, I can do something.’ ”

“I want my gifts to go to something that’s actually useful,” he said. “I want to help create a vibrant campus experience for the students.”

Did you watch LUGE at the Winter Olympics? Curious to know more about the sport. This is a talk story I had with John Porter 4 years ago on my ESPN Hawaii Emily T Gail Show. I listened to the show again last week after watching LUGE to refresh what John, who has been involved in the sport of LUGE for many years had shared with us. It was so interesting so I am running it again. John explains the development process for luge athletes, the significant differences between natural track and artificial track luge.

He also explains why it can be said that three of the five luge tracks in the country are located in Michigan. The artificial track at the Muskegon State Park which is iced is one. The 2-curve fiberglass track on which wheeled-sleds are used during three seasons in the state park is another. And then there is the half-mile long natural track in Negaunee, Michigan on which competitions at the local, national, continental, and World Cup levels have been held for 29 years.

It was a fun conversation for several reason. Informative however best of all John and I were classmates, played in our high school band together and was great to reconnect.

Always fun to talk story with Mark Rolfing, NBC Golf Channel d
during the MItsubishi Electric Championship at Hualalai at Four Seasons Resort Hualalai.

We covered a lot of subjects. JR De Groote, Sports Editor West Hawaii Today was with us. I turned on my recorder as we were heading over to the Golf Channel Broadcast Booth where we were going to park and talk story in event Mark had to get on air. Mark was sharing a story about Tiger Woods and Peter Jacobson and Fluff Cowan who had been Peter's Caddie and ended up with Tiger. I met Fluff through Peter and followed all that so thought it was a story told by mark I wanted to share.

After we settled in while we were talking I shifted into video ... so our sound shifts at that point. I put the two together so I could share our whole talk story.

Brendan Moynahan talks story with JR DeGroote, Sports Editor West Hawaii Today and me at the 2018 PGA TOUR Champions MItsubishi Electric Championship at Hualalai on Hawaii Island after the 2nd round was complete and his long time friend Jerry Kelly was one of the leaders.

Brendan is the Director of Golf Operations at Hualalai and shares stories about the Mitsubishi Electric Championship and his experiences with many of the Champions Tour players including Jerry Kelly who Brendan met when Brendan was Head Golf Professional at the Experience at Koele
on Lanai in Hawaii.

Brendan talks about his Dad Mike Moynahan who was a Master Club maker, who won awards for his craft and contributed in many ways to the game of golf and charities.

Jerry Kelly won the Mitsubishi Electric Championship and gave Brendan a whole lot of credit for the comfort Jerry feels playing in Hawaii at the Sony and at the Hualalai Golf Course home of the Mitsubishi Electric Championship.

Brendan represented Hawaii in the US Amateur Golf Tournament in 1987 and 1989. After turning professional in 1991 Brendan won 10 Aloha Section PGA tournaments and represented Hawaii eight times in the PGA Club Professional Championships.

Brendan became an associate and teaching golf professional at Kapalua Golf Resort on the island of Maui, upon his return to the Islands, earning more accolades, such as the Maui Golf Magazine Player of the Year award in 1997 and Assistant Professional of the Year in 1998 by the Aloha Section of the PGA. He then moved to Lanai and became the head golf professional of the island’s two esteemed courses. In 2005, Moynahan returned to Hawaii Island, where his family resides, assuming the role of Head Golf Professional at Hualalai Golf Club. In 2009, he was promoted to his current position as Director of Golf.

Jerry Kelly, winner of the PGA TOUR Champions 2018 MItsubishi Electric Championship at Hualalai on Hawaii Island was very happy as he talked with Laura Vescovi, PGA TOUR Champions Communications Manager, JR DeGroote, West Hawaii Today, Paul Arnett, Honolulu Star- Advertiser and myself.

JR De Groote's WHT column today had the headline ...

Kelly Birdies 18, shocks Montgomerie with 1st win at Hualalai.

Here is an excerpt from JR's column that tells well how Jerry won.

"Staring down the wide 16th fairway at Hualalai, Kelly sliced his drive into an usually untouched patch of a’a lava. After a short search-and-rescue, the PGA TOUR Champions newly-named Rookie of the Year dropped his ball, saved bogey, kept his head, and down just a stroke, gave himself a chance.

He would still need a little help to chase down Colin Montgomerie, but that came when the Hall of Fame Scot made an inexplicable mistake of his own on 18, setting up a finish for the ages at the Champions Tour’s season-opening event.

In front of a crowd of 400-plus on the 18th green, Kelly nailed a 17-foot birdie putt, turning a one-shot deficit into a victory when he watched Montgomerie miss a 6-foot par putt."

It was a beautiful trophy and closing presentation on Golf Channel and like every year the Lim Family Hula Halua performing on the 18th to a large crowd.

I loved Jerry comments about his long time friendship with Brendan Moynahan, Director of Golf Operations at Hualalai and how their friendship played a part in his win. Fun stuff.

Jack Berry is a long time friend and in many ways has been a mentor.
We had a fun talk story. Reminded me how much I love my friendship with Jack and mutual support. I hope you will listen.

Whether you were a reader of Jack's during his many years at the Detroit News, and now in his retirement with Art and Jeannie McCafferty's Michigan Golfer or just enjoy taking about sports and how it weaves into our lives and friendships I think you will pick up how much Jack loves what he does so well. Tells stories.

And I love pulling the stories out of Jack ... about how he has made a difference. Like how he was the one who got the locker room ban of females into the locker at the Masters lifted because he felt it was the right thing for them to do and he was going to do something about it. Jack covered 43 Masters!!!!

This is the bio from when Jack was inducted into the Michigan Golf Hall of Fame in 2003.

Jack Berry is a renowned sports writer who honed his ability reporting sports in the Detroit area. Beginning his sports writing career with the UPI, United Press International, in Detroit, he went on to write for both the Free Press and the Detroit News. A talented writer, Jack covered most sports and all of our national sports teams. Covering golf for many years allowed Jack to bear witness to some of the great events in golf. Jack also loved writing about amateur golf and covered 30-plus Michigan Amateurs. For committee service on the Michigan Golf Summits I and II, he received an Outstanding Service Award.

Jack wrote about Michigan golf for 40 years. During this time, he had a strong, national influence on promoting the sport for all golfers. He served for more than ten years on the Board of Directors of the National Golf Writers Association of America (GWAA), two years in the mid 80’s as President and eight years in the 90’s as Secretary-Treasurer. As President in 1984, he successfully intervened with Augusta National Golf Club Chairman, Hord Hardin, to lift the ban on female reporters in the Masters’ locker room.

Golf throughout the state of Michigan benefited from Jack Berry’s powerful pen. He advanced the promotion of golf in our state by writing the Guide to Michigan Golf, first published in 1991 and updated in 1993. He followed this in 1992, with an influential inside back cover column for Golf World entitled, “A Convincing Case for Michigan: When it comes to golf, this Northern state is state of the art.” Jack also used his skills to promote and publicize the formation of the Michigan Women’s Publinx Golf Association and the Metro Detroit Executive Women’s Golf Association. He is a regular contributor to the Michigan Golfer. The GAM Distinguished Award in 1997 acknowledged his wealth of contributions to amateur golf and more than three decades of writing that inspired the growth and maintained the popularity of golf in Michigan.

Since retiring, he freelances for national and local golf publications. Locally, he serves as the GWAA’s representative at Michigan State University, interviewing journalism students as prospective scholarship recipients. He hosts an annual celebrity golf day fundraiser for the Friends of Wayne County Parks Committee. He has four bright, beautiful and loving daughters with whom he is very close.

Elected to Michigan Golf Hall of Fame in 2003.

Here is some back story to the history of the Hawaii State Open ... which became the Hawaiian Open ...

Past champions include 1987 U.S. Open Champion Scott Simpson and local favorites Japan PGA touring professional David Ishii and PGA Tour player Dean Wilson. David is the only player to have won both the Hawaii State Open and the Hawaiian Open. The Hawaii State Open is one of Hawaii’s oldest tournaments and has an interesting history. According to the Aloha Section PGA web site, it began in 1974 as a revival of the original Hawaiian Open which began in the 1920's to determine the best golfer in the Islands. Great players from the mainland were invited to compete and did so for more than 30 years. Because of the diversity of players and the boost in economy from these events, three former Waialae Country Club presidents, Ken Brown, John Bellinger and Francis Wright asked the PGA Tour in 1965, to add the Hawaiian Open as a regular stop on the PGA Tour. Although this was a great commercial success, it restricted Hawaiian pros and amateurs from participating in the Hawaiian Open, since now to play in the event, you had to be a playing member on the PGA Tour.

So for a few years there was not a premier event for Hawaiian players. The tournament was revived in 1974 and it was called the Hawaii State Open with same mission: to find the best golfer in Hawaii with the Ted Makalena perpetual trophy after Makalena who was the first Hawaii resident to win a PGA Tour event – the 1966 PGA Tour Hawaiian Open. In 1976, a women’s division was added. In 1989, a senior division was added. It was run by the Oahu Junior Golf Association until 1993 when it was taken over by the Aloha Section PGA and in 2006 the Aloha Section PGA Foundation took over and has full fields each year.

I think it is significant that Greg McLaughlin was involved with many of the current PGA TOUR Champions players as they were coming up and making strides on the PGA TOUR.
Before he joined the PGA TOUR as Senior VP of PGA TOUR Championship Management, Greg was Tournament Director of the PGA Northern Trust Open (formerly Nissan Open), Honda classic, BMW Championship and Director of the Tiger Woods Foundation for 14 years. At the Nissan Open in 1992 at Rivera Country Club in LA Greg was responsible for providing Tiger Woods with his first exemption to compete in a PGA TOUR.

Fred Couples won the Nissan Open that year. I was at that 1992 Nissan Open and it was the first time I met Greg McLaughlin and it was the first time I ever saw Tiger Woods. He was around 16 years old. I was just venturing to other venues to cover golf and I'll always remember how helpful and friendly Greg was to me when I got press credentials for the Nissan Open over several years.

I appreciate having worked with and been very involved with the PGA TOUR Champions and Kelly Fliear, Tournament Manager for 22 years now. It's been fun to weave so many relationships in the world of golf in my hometown Detroit and Hawaii into my life.

For instance Brian Goin. Brian had been Tournament Director of the Ford Seniors in Detroit for many years and then as Director of PGA Tour Championship Management we worked together on the Mitsubishic Electric Championship at Hualalai. We have mutual friends in the Detroit Media and handful of my friends from Detroiters have for years played in the Mitsubishi Electric Championship at Hualalai Pro-AM and we have a few spots open for this year.

Greg and I mention Warwick Hills in Grand Blanc, Michigan being the site in September 2018 for the PGA TOUR Champions Ally Challenge. Warwick Hills hosted the Buick Open for 45 years through 2009. As a junior golfer aspiring to play professional golf in the 1960's, attending the Buick Open was very special.

So grateful for the game of golf and the relationships in my life through golf professionally and personally. Thanks for listening to the Emily T Gail Talk Story Show emilytgailtalkstory.podomatic.com.

Dr. Frank and Laura Sayre's son Daniel Sayre at the age of 25 lost his life in a hiking accident in Pololu Valley on the Big Island of Hawaii 20 years ago. (photo of Danny and Frank and Laura and daughter Laura).

Fire Rescue personnel risked their lives to recover Daniel's body ...

The Sayres learned the county had no program to honor rescue personnel who go above and beyond the call of duty.

They wondered why the Fire Department did not have ropes long enough to into the island’s deep valley, a safer option than using a helicopter in some circumstances.

Laura and Frank decided to buy two sets of rappelling ropes for the county — one for the Hilo side on the east and one for the Kona side on the west — at about $1,500 apiece and honor the fireman who had risked their lives to recover Daniels body.

And that was the start of the community supported Daniel R. Sayre Memorial Foundation to raise funds for much need rescue equipment began. Saturday Sept. 2 they will celebrate 20 years and more than 1.75 million dollars raised and equipment purchased.

Laura and Frank share a lot of interesting and very informative information about the Rescue teams and the community response to all the needs.

Saturday Sept. 2 is the 20th Annual Daniel R Sayre Memorial Foundation dinner. It is one of the Big Island premier events at the Fairmont Orchid at Mauna Lani. Aloha or Evening Attire it includes a Silent Auction-in fact 3 ballrooms of silent auction items beginning at 4:30pm. The 5 star gourmet dinner begins at 6pm, wonderful music, beautiful program honoring some of the fireman for rescues made this year and a chance to meet the hundreds of supporters that attend every year because we all know that any given day could be us that needs a well equipped rescue team.

Go to danielrsayrefoundation.net for information, to donate or for tickets which are $110.

Funds raised have gone towards rope rescue equipment, rescue communication systems, ATV's, rescue boards, automatic defibrillators, jet skis, $38,000 refurbishing of the Rescue Boat, masks with voice communication to command boats and so much more.

I stopped by Bike Works Beach and Sport, Queens Marketplace, Kohala Coast, Island of Hawaii and had a good time talking story with owner and long time friend Grant Miller, who is part of the Big Island Mountain Bike ohana.

After leaving Grant, I ended up calling Jeff Waraniak, who I met last summer in my hometown Detroit. Jeff has been an Associate Editor at HOUR Detroit Magazine, soon to be moving to Denver as an assistant editor for 5280 Magazine.

I asked Jeff to share with our listeners a story he had told me about reaching out to the Big Island Mountain Bike ohana couple years ago and the warm welcome they gave him.

Jeff shared his good experience visiting the Island of Hawaii and also lots of positive stories about biking events in Detroit like Slow Roll, Tour de Troit, and the urban bike culture he has enjoyed while living in Detroit.

We talked about couple subjects from some of his wonderful comprehensive storytelling. One about the DNR Outdoor Adventure Center and the impact of opening up in downtown Detroit.

The other is about Detroit certainly being the city of Champions when in October 1935, the Tigers won their first World Series. In December, the Lions won their first NFL championship, and in April 1936 the Red Wings won their first Stanley Cup, and a day later, the Detroit Olympics, the Wings’ minor league affiliate, won their championship in the International Hockey League. Held all three titles. Like myself, many Detroiters did not know this till recently.

When Jeff and I talked it wasn't official he was going to Denver ...I lived in Denver long ago and knowing what a mountain bike enthusiast Jeff is I'm excited for him discovering all the great trails and bike ways in Colorado.
No doubt he will enjoy life in Denver while saying nice things about Detroit!!!!

The event is free and spectators are welcome. Tee offs at 7:30 am every morning. I suggest getting to the practice range before or after each days round and watching how they practice and prepare. The parking lot overflow from spectators is good indication that people enjoy being around this event. Nice time to enjoy breakfast or lunch at the newly remodeled Mai Grille at the golf clubhouse...

Wesley Wailehua, Executive Director / C.E.O. – Aloha Section PGA & Foundation talks about the Mauna Lani Resort Hawaii State Open: Friday, December 16- Sunday December 18.

This is Hawaii’s most prestigious and historic golf event of the year of professionals and amateurs. The Aloha Section PGA in partnership with Mauna Lani Resort present a first class 54 hole stroke play tournament including a Pro-Am raising funds for the Aloha Section PGA Foundation.

Tom Sursley, Mauna Lani Director of Golf and Nao Tomashiro, Mauna Lani Director of Golf Operations, and their team at the Francis H. I'i Brown North and South will host a full field of four divisions: Men’s Open, Men’s Senior Open, Women’s Open, and Men’s A-Flight.

Last year, Nick Mason won over Parker McLachlin in a five hole sudden death play-off for his third Hawaii State Open Championship.

According to the Aloha Section PGA web site, it began
in 1974 as a revival of the original Hawaiian Open which began in the 1920's to determine the best golfer in the Islands.

Kelly Fliear, Tournament Manager and Brian Goin, head of PGA Tour Championship Management, Dave Senko, Senior Manager Communications at the PGA Tour, Pete Rolfing, PCR Sports
Big Island Junior Golf is one of the charities as well. I always look forward to Saturday when the keiki from the Big Island Junior Golf in Hilo sponsored by Mitsubishi come to the tournament after they play their own tournament at Mauna Lani Resort. They are knowledgeable golf fans and so enthused when getting autographs. While players are good with the fans, they are especially attentive to the juniors. In the past Tom Watson and Hale Irwin each year have a special interaction with the keiki joking and interacting with them as they signs autographs. I have friends who were junior golfers when this event started 20 years ago on the Big Island and no question being around this quality golf inspired my friends to practice, get on their high school team, earn college scholarships and a handful are now professional golfers.

The Daniel R Sayre Foundation is another one of the charities. The Foundation was created by Dr. Frank and Laura Sayre in memory of their son Daniel who lost his life in a hiking accident 20 years ago in Pololu Valley. Recognizing the need for rescue equipment, the Daniel R Sayre Foundation with tremendous community support has raised well over a million dollars in monies and equipment for our Hawaii County Fire Department and Rescue Teams.

David Marr III, Mark Rolfing, and Jay Radzavicz all with NBC Golf Channel return each year to be part of the broadcasts and reports from the Mitsubishi Electric Championship and lend their support for an event at Nanea with some of the Champions Tour players raising funds for the Hawaii State Junior Golf Association.

The PGA Tour, Brendan Moynahan, Director of Golf Hualalai Golf Club and his staff, Kahu Billy Mitchell, “Uncle” Earl Regidor Manager, Ka’upulehu Cultural Center, the Four Seasons Resort staff and the volunteers have year after year created a world class event with players that just might inspire you to work on your golf game a little more or volunteer next year.

Lisa Nuszkowski, Executive Director Detroit Bike Share talks about the recent Open Streets Detroit, part of a global initiative to reclaim public space by temporarily transforming streets into paved parks and public spaces.

Lisa shares how the Open Streets Detroit opened the nearly four miles of continuous roadway on Michigan Ave. (US 12) and Vernor Highway to create space for healthy activities, community building, and connection to local retail by closing it to motorized traffic. People were able to experience Michigan Ave and Vernor Ave in a new way, whether by walking, running, biking, rollerblading, or skateboarding and bringing ethnic neighborhoods together.

Open Streets is a event under the Downtown Detroit Partnership. It was presented by DTE Energy Foundation but it was the many groups and organizations that made it work

There was complementary programming at locations along the route- yoga, dancing, basketball, and other health and wellness activities.
Lisa shares the long-term vision of making Open Streets Detroit a regular program that highlights other streets and neighborhoods throughout Detroit and reflects the changes in Detroit that are creating so many recreational and non motorized activities.

Lisa talks about the soon to be Detroit Bike Share Program and the goals of the program modeled after programs which are becoming popular nationwide

Emily comments on the new Kailua-Kona Bike Share stations set up in Kailua- Kona at Huggo's, Courtyard King Kamehameha’s Kona Beach Hotel and Hale Halawai. PATH, People's Advocacy Trail's Hawaii under direction of Executive Director Tina Clothier and the County of Hawaii have been leading the efforts for the Kailua-Kona Bike Share Program.

Emily comments on the commonality of recreational activities in Detroit and Hawaii and talks about Slow Roll Detroit, a weekly bike ride co-founded by Jason Hall and Mike McKool and run by volunteers with several thousand + bicyclists riding through the streets of Detroit on Monday nights.

I enjoy sharing these stories. Detroit, Hawaii, all communities are continually going through sociological challenges regarding how to transform into communities that co exist and encourage use of non motorized vehicles. Sharing the stories I feel highlights how similar our communities are ...

I was walking thru the Detroit Historical Museum when Wendy Rose Bice, and Gail Greenberg said hello and asked me if I was Emily Gail. It was fun to have them recollect some of their memories of our efforts in the 70's-80s with "say nice things about Detroit" and the Emily Detroit Runs.

Then I discovered Wendy Executive Director of the Jewish Historical Society of Michigan and Gail Senior Staff Assoc with the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Detroit were responsible for the wonderful new exhibit I had enjoyed a few days earlier titled "Chasing Dreams Baseball and Becoming American".

I was so pleased to have them take the time to tape a segment for the Emily T Gail Show espnhawaii.com about the exhibit and related family events they have planned which we talk about in our interview.

Meanwhile ....Here is some of the info about the exhibit from a nice story in the Oakland press by Sari Cicurel:

The Jewish Historical Society of Michigan brought the exhibit to the Detroit Historical Museum and it will run through November 27.

The exhibit is presented by West Bloomfield-based Jewish Historical Society of Michigan and the Detroit Historical Society. The exhibit celebrates heroes and pioneers like Hank Greenberg, Sandy Koufax, Jackie Robinson Roberto Clemente and Ichiro Suzuki. At the same time that baseball has reflected the best of America, it has also been a mirror for challenges the nation has faced, such as racism, anti-Semitism, class stratifications, the challenges of urbanization.

During the three months some special events included:
• A Conversation about baseball and baseball history with Mike “Stoney” Stone, 97.1 The the event with Mike “Stoney” Stone was a casual evening featuring baseball-themed food and baseball history at the Detroit Historical Museum.

• A Family Day took place presented by the Jewish Historical Society of Michigan and the Michigan Jewish Sports Foundation. Fans of all ages practiced their play-by-play radio and television skills in a Baseball Broadcast Booth, a special presentation chatting up baseball trivia and stats with a program entitled, “Old Jews Talking Baseball,” featuring Max Lapides, Bob Matthews, Irwin Cohen and Jim Grey and baseball-themed food.

The Detroit Historical Museum is located at 5401 Woodward Ave., Detroit. For more information, visit michjewishhistory.org or call 248-432-5517.

As on personal note. I am so grateful I joined the Detroit Historical Society. I had no idea how much goes on at the Detroit Historical Museum and Dossin Museum that fits my lifestyle and interest. The nice invites to exhibit openings, the newsletter is one of the best I have seen and read cover to cover. Less than $5 a month. detroithistorical.org

Joining us is long time Michigan Golfer and Michigan Runner Photographer Carter Sherline who reflects on the people and events he has covered over the years and shares some fun stories. We also talk about the rich history of golf in Michigan and at Oakland Hills. Well, we just have plenty of nice things to say to each other and it was fun including the stories from the Emily Detroit Runs in the 70's-80's

Australian Curtis Luck, 2016 US Amateur Champion is a guest from the media center where he had an extended conversation with us. I also caught up with his mother Jody and his father Stewart Luck, integral part of his story from being a junior golfer to now US Amateur Champion.

Brad Dalke, US Amateur runner-up to Curtis shares his feelings about his week at the US Amateur and his heading back to college play at Oklahoma with a lot of confidence.

As I was walking out of past a hospitality tent I talked with 14 year old Michael Gates and his fellow caddies Orza Robertson II, Ashish Purania, Aidan Parrott. They are caddies under Caddie Master Jim Roechefski at Oakland Hills.

I knew before I even talked with Michael he and the rest of the crew had experienced a week they will never forget. They had a spring in their step, smiling and still working hard cleaning up and you'll hear the enthusiasm in their voices. Fun chatting with them.

This is from June 11, 2016 ... it was the Detroit Historical Museum and Detroit Historical Society 150 year celebration for Vernors. It was the end of the day and several thousand of us were outside in the courtyard of the Detroit Historical Museum to give open our can of Vernors they had handed out to all of us, take that first Vernors swig and give a Vernors toast to the wonderful day of celebration.

I turned on my recorder and got some fun talk story and conversations with lots of people including James Vernor V and his son Jamie (6th generation). Tracy Smith Irwin, Director of Exhibitions and Collections, Detroit Historical Society, Sean Clyne, Data Base and Membership Manager, Detroit Historical Society expressed their gratitude for the turnout and others like Carter Sherline, Howard and Cindy MClauchlan had so many nice things to say about Detroit, Vernors and shared about all the Detroit Historical Museum and Detroit Historical Society events and activities. Events and activities that include the Dossin Museum on Belle Isle, the Detroit 67 Project and more I think are best experienced and be aware of by being a member of the Detroit Historical Society. I'm a new member and have discovered such joy in being aware of and participating in what they do and learning so much about Detroit .... my hometown where I am discovering every day means so much more to me as I learn more about my own family Detroit history.

So the story on June 11, 2016 at the 150 Vernor's Celebration was about much more than a drink. It was about Vernor's, something that really impacted a city ....Detroit and the culture of the people who lived in Detroit. I'm one of them!!!

Keith Wunderlich, who has written a book "Vernor's Ginger Ale" says “It’s hard to tell the story of someone who grew up in Detroit in the 1940s and ’50s that doesn’t somehow involve Vernors,” Keith and Mike Novak who is the Vernors Gnome "Woody" when not a Science teacher in Blissfield and so many others created a wonderful day.

I had so much fun with Keith and Mike early that morning in the studio at WJR on the Warren Pierce Show. Warren really showcased Detroit Historical Society plans for later in the day. We had a Vernors Boston Cooler for breakfast and Warren's team ... Lori, Erin, Erica, and others all had a Vernors story.

Thanks for listening. Glad I turned on my recorder and can feature another "say nice things about Detroit" segment as part of my Emily T Gail Show espnhawaii.com

Telling Detroit stories and why they matter....

Grant Miller, Bike Works talks about all the trail cutting they are doing in Kaloko on the Big Island. Anyone can participate. the photo is from a recent work day. Check out Bike Works facebook pages for updates.

The Levo is a great equalizer so all levels of riders can ride together.

The 46 mile race includes a climb of more than 9000 feet and registration and opportunity to volunteer is available at hawaiicyclingclub.com.

Thanks to Claire Nelson (in photo with me)and Wayne Ramocan for inviting me to do a Parlor Talk at their Detroit Urban Consulate in Midtown.

The first few minutes is everyone arriving... I left the chatter before we started the talk in because I felt it is indicative of the spirit of the evening.

Once we got started thanks to all who shared their stories from the those days in the 70's-80's with the Emily Detroit Runs, Emily's Across the Street, their love of Detroit and how they continue to share and live the "say nice things about Detroit" attitude we started back in 1979 through their own efforts then and now.

Here's a few who shared stories ... Colleen Sweeney, Elena Fracassa, Michele Dragistry, Mary Ann McCourt, Julie Atkinson-Fountain who were all part of the Emily's Team in the 80's and we continue to be mutually supportive.

Some others who shared stories of then and now were Bruce Giffin, Mary Chapman, Sandra McNeill, Patricia Cunningham, Emily Linn, Andy Linn, TJ Samuels, Christopher Gorski, Marsha Music, Trisha White, Gaby Durnen and Sue Sattler. It was great to get support from Krista Maggard and others who helped us or I saw in the audience.

Thanks Trish Hubbell for coming by... bringing the spirit of your late husband Colin "Kyle" Hubbell as we called him when he was part of the Emily's team back in the 80's. Colin or Ky as I knew him is in the hearts of many including me for all his efforts in Detroit before he passed at too young an age. Thanks Scott Lowell for coming by.

Some who I received nice notes or posted photos the next day or who wrote in our "say nice things about Detroit" Shinola Journal from the Shinola Midtown Store included Colleen Robar, Chris and Kim Casteel, Bonnie Davis Mellos, Gail Roberts, Janet Anderson, Melissa Francese, Robin and Rebecca Rubin Kahn , Nick, Alia, Brandi Keeler, Sue & 3 others as they signed...and many more.

Special thanks to my friend Patty Rooney, from Patty Rooney & Company for arranging for Ted Fournier to video tape the evening. And what a nice surprise to have Photographer Bruce Giffin be on hand, share a story from back when and share with me some of the photos he took throughout the evening. Heartwarming support from so many!!!!

While they couldn't be at the talk I dedicate the evening to Ron and Pat Andrews and family (Jennifer, Chris, and Sandy) and the Brockmiller family. Their support for Herb and me during some of our most difficult times I will never forget.

Hope you listen to what others shared within the 2 hours... or parts of anyway. It was a lovely evening with a whole lotta support from many. I'm very grateful.

Warmly Emily

Jocelyn an award–winning artist and dean of arts instruction at Wayne County Community College District tells why she wanted Bruce Giffin's "Face of Detroit" photo exhibit to be on exhibit during Repertory Performances of "Homeless and How We Got that Way" which runs thru Sunday June 26. (313 868-1347)

I had read about the Bruce's exhibit being at the Rep Theatre and planned to attend. I was pleased that Bruce came by my Detroit Urban Consulate Parlor Talk and I told him I planned to go see the exhibit. Then I asked him if he would go with me and tell me about it.

We went to the Rep Theatre on a Sunday. It was a packed house for the play "Homeless and How We Got There". Bruce walked me around the exhibit sharing touching backstories of those in the photos.

A few nights later I attended the reception and turned on my recorder when Jocelyn started sharing her feelings about Bruce's "The Face of Detroit" work ... and Bruce shared and those in attendance shared and created what I feel is a nice talk story.

Detroit Repertory Theatre is in it's 59th year. Bruce Giffin has been sharing his work for over 25 years. I am grateful for reconnecting with both recently.

I was touched by Bruce's "The Face of Detroit" exhibit and encourage you to check out more of his work on his facebook page.

Thanks for listening...

I attended my first Detroit Urban Consulate Parlor Talk in June 2016 to hear Marsha Music, who has been a FB friend. I was going to be giving a Parlor Talk the following week and felt this would be an opportunity for me to meet Marsha as i have enjoyed seeing and hearing her virtually . I also wanted to get a feel for the setting at the Urban Consulate.

I was overcome with a sense of joy, melancholy, gratitude, optimism, reality, and so many emotions all wrapped up in my response to what Marsha shared ...

Marsha's words when talking story, her message in her poems she read, her personality, her brutal yet graceful honesty about so many issues that do linger in my subconscious, her warmth for all that were in attendance, her generosity in acknowledging others made it a very special evening.

I did not record all of the talk but here is what I got and I hope you find listening as worthwhile as I did.

I have since read so much more of Marsha work, I've had a long conversation by phone the day after her talk that I treasure as she has so much wisdom to share. I was so pleased Marsha attended my parlor talk and shared her heart and so grateful to know Marsha.

I met Isaiah McKinnon, Deputy Mayor of Detroit to Mayor Mike Duggan in the 1970's. I had opened Emily's Across the Street next to the London Chop House. Isaiah was a Detroit Police officer and we were part of his area. He was always so supportive of our efforts to create activity in the area that had been drained of tenants and people by the opening of the Renaissance Center. When we created the Emily Detroit Run, Isaiah totally got our intention to showcase downtown Detroit.

We (Emily's) were supporters of the Detroit Police All Stars Athletic Team. For years I've had taped to my wall a photo of the team including Isaiah in 1980 proudly wearing "Say nice things about Detroit" t-shirts at the Police Olympics in Toronto. I've stayed in touch with Isaiah over the years. I thought it was time to deliver a new 'Say nice things about Detroit" shirt and do this spur of the moment talk story with Isaiah. thanks to Kwabena Shabu for our photo.

On another note, the journey Isaiah has been on and still is as Deputy Mayor of Detroit tells a story ...

After joining the Detroit Police Department in 1965, Isaiah "Ike" McKinnon rose through the ranks to become Police Chief under Mayor Dennis Archer from 1994-1998. e graduated from the FBI Academy in Quantico, Virginia and holds a doctorate in higher education administration from Michigan State University, a master's degree in criminal justice from Mercy College of Detroit, and a bachelor's degree in history and law enforcement from the University of Detroit. McKinnon is an associate professor of education at University of Detroit Mercy.

This is a another "Say nice things about Detroit" segment from my espnhawaii.com Emily T Gail Show. Every show I share some thoughts and feelings about my hometown Detroit or talk story with a guest from Detroit.

Julie Atkinson Fountain is a long time Detroiter. She was part of the team at Emily's Across the Street. She ran our plant store in the 70's and early 80's when people were just tuning into having indoor plants and here was a great downtown plant store as part of Emily's. It was unique in downtown and for sure our green thumb spilled out onto the sidewalks with our wonderful flower barrels among the benches and throngs of people who eventually discovered it was fun hanging out on the sidewalk eating a hot dog or licking an ice cream cone from Emily's ....

I love bringing people who have a history in Detroit into the lives of those who have become part of the present good things going on in Detroit.
Last summer Julie joined me in a talk story with Larry Austin, Team Leader, Whole Foods Detroit which is available as another podcast here at Emily T Gail Talk Story. After Emily's, Julie spent years maintaining the plants in the Renaissance Center, lived in West Village area, loves Detroit.

so... thanks for listening to Julie and I say nice things about Detroit!!!

Carol Connor, longtime resident of the Big Island has a longtime involvement with the Aloha Performing Arts Copy and Aloha Theatre starting with performing in Man of La Mancha in 1986 with Stan Michaels, directed by Luna Edwards. About that time Carol took her acting skills into radio broadcasting and was a popular morning personality for years. Of recent she has been handling much of the costuming for APAC. Her two children were also very involved with Childrens Theatre years ago. I'm grateful for having had the opportunity to play Nurse Rached in Cuckoo's Nest years ago. Gave me first hand experience how hard everyone works on these productions.

Carol reflects on all the wonderful demanding productions Jerry Tracy and everyone involved continue to produce. Currently it's "Evita" which sold out for opening weekend recently and runs through March 15.

“Even though it’s billed as a Broadway musical, it’s technically an opera because everything is sung,” says director Jerry Tracy. “Even the music directors both agree that it’s musically the most difficult show they’ve ever done...” -

Titan, at 13 1/2 years old was the youngest to make the cut at the Mauna Lani Resort Hawaii State Open. He tied for 34th. I've love watching Titan work at and see results in his game. He sure turned some heads with this performance. Thanks for listening to what Titan was feeling...and shared.

I've known Titan since he was 9 years old...we were range buddies often at Waikoloa Kings' Course. Like all beginners Titan was frustrated that he couldn't outhit everyone. I would remind him how well he was doing and remind him to remember how much progress he was making. Something I have to remind myself of all the time in everything I'm doing. We would talk about how to work at it, have fun practicing. We laughed. We talked about all kinds of things. Titan, his dad Philip, and I have had many evenings around the chipping green talking life that day for each of us and practicing. We met up the other night at the Mauna Lani putting green. It was fun.

Titan has a big ohana of people who have contributed in so many ways to his golf efforts. And Titan (and his dad) are always working on doing their part. Keeping focused, and keep on keeping on ...

I really enjoy our friendship...

Jack Berry, renowned sports writer talks about fellow Michigan Golf Hall of Fame member Glenn Johnson who passed away recently and was an important mentor and friend of Emily’s, as he was to many. Mahalo for listening to the talk story or reading the story and nice tribute to Glenn that Jack wrote and I have included below.

GLENN

By Jack Berry

The PGA Tour had Doug Sanders. The European Tour has Ian Poulter. The LPGA has Paula Creamer. But for all out color and pizzazz, we had Glenn Johnson of Grosse Ile. Johnson arrived in Charlevoix for the Michigan Amateur in a Cadillac top down convertible packed with clothing changes for three double round days of match play.
That was confidence and that was Glenn Johnson.
“I had fun with the clothes. I hated to play (after a morning round) without cleaning up,” Johnson said. “One time a guy asked me why I was always changing colors, why I didn’t wear black or white. I went out that afternoon in red, white, blue, black, everything. He was 2 down after the first two holes.
“I liked match play. I enjoyed the psychology, watching the opponent. I had more fun without saying anything,” Johnson said. “I’d look at their grip and they’d be thinking ‘Is something wrong with my grip?’”
There was no one like him in Michigan golf and he passed away to the green course in the sky on Dec. 11 at the age of 92. The later years were difficult but there were so many good times, so many matches won and memories like the Michigan sectional qualifying held at Birmingham Country Club for the 1972 United States Open at Pebble Beach.
Chuck Thorpe, the confident young brother of the PGA Tour’s Jim Thorpe, and Johnson were tied after regulation. Thorpe, a brash smasher, figured to win on the first hole. A par five. Thorpe didn’t use a tee. He’d stomp his heel into the ground and place the ball on top of the upturned turf.
But he only made par and so did Johnson. The second hole was a short par four with the green short of the river, unlike today’s position. It was driveable but Thorpe didn’t drive it, made bogey and Johnson won with a par and was off to Pebble Beach.
Johnson played the Monday and Tuesday practice rounds before “immense crowds.” He’d called Arnold Palmer and asked to play with him. Johnson knew Palmer since he played in the prestigious Grosse Ile Invitational in Arnie’s amateur days.
After the two Palmer rounds Johnson hooked up with defending Open champion Lee Trevino on Wednesday, his third round with two of golf’s superstars on one of the most famous courses in the world. That was Glenn.
Johnson didn’t play golf until after service in World War II as a pilot, teaching men how to fly the B-24 Liberator bomber, and then college at Michigan State. He won nine letters in sports at Grosse Ile High School, had three years in at Michigan State before the military service and returned to play quarterback his senior year. He played against Miami in the Orange Bowl stadium, played against Santa Clara on the West Coast and said that rules permitted only one substitute per quarter so “If you were first string, you played about 50 minutes every game.”
Johnson’s father was a captain in Ford’s lake freighter fleet and the family settled on Grosse Ile in 1927. Glenn naturally took to the water and sailed the Port Huron to Mackinac race and was first mate on a winner. He was a lifelong fisherman with a boat docked by his house.
He finally connected with golf “because the practice tee was 200 yards from my house” and said he worked hard at it. His short game was especially sharp. “I didn’t hit it that far but I knew where to hit it” and match play was his game.
Johnson won five Michigan Amateur championships, second only to six by Chuck Kocsis. When the Michigan Golf Hall of Fame was established, Kocsis was in the first threesome with World Golf Hall of Famer Walter Hagen and Oakland Hills professional Al Watrous. Johnson was in the second threesome with two-time Masters champion Horton Smith and PGA champion Walter Burkemo.
Four legendary professionals and two superb amateurs formed the first six members of the Hall of Fame.
When Johnson came to golf, he came full force. He played in 43 Michigan Amateurs, at one point won 23 straight matches, qualified to play in 17 United States Golf Association championships, was low amateur in the 1981 Open at Oakland Hills, and won 15 Grosse Ile club championships.
As a senior he helped form the Society of Seniors, an organization of the best senior amateurs in the country. He won the Eastern Seniors five times and a North and South Senior.
He looked out for young players at Grosse Ile, and Emily Gail, a top junior, said “Glenn was a huge factor in my being encouraged to be a good female athlete. He was a great mentor and friend. I called him a couple weeks ago as I would do a couple times a year to tell him how much I appreciated his encouragement. He helped me learn how to love hitting balls and practice which I still do.”
And because Johnson also was a skier, two of Michigan’s best holiday golf tournaments were established.
“I skied at Boyne Mountain and became friends with (owner) Everett Kircher. He had a golf course and Labor Day weekend was deadsville. I told him he had all those empty beds and he should start a two man tournament.”
Kircher took the advice, made Johnson co-chairman and the Kircher Cup is nearly four decades old with a full field every year. Then Johnson, assisted by the late Bucky Brower, real estate salesman and something of the unofficial mayor of Boyne Country, talked Kircher into starting a tournament in another “deadsville” period, Memorial Day weekend. Now it’s the Nike State Pro-Am.
Besides his golf, skiing, boating, and interest in the Red Wings – he had seats right behind the goal in the Olympia Stadium days, Johnson was an accomplished artist. One of his favorite subjects was clowns and one of his paintings is in the Michigan Golf Hall of Fame collections of members’ memorabilia.
Grosse Ile members and friends of Johnson celebrated his 90th birthday at the club and unveiled an exhibition of his many trophies, medals and awards received over the years. There’s a full length painting of Johnson with trousers as colorful as a tropical garden.
“I’ve had a fantastic run,” Johnson said when he was a guest of honor at the 100th Michigan Amateur in 2011 at the Heather course, his favorite, at Boyne Highlands.
Fittingly, he was wearing a sweater of many colors.

The Daniel R. Sayre Memorial Foundation
"In the memory of one lost life, others have been saved."

I decided to rerun the talk story because of the Daniel Sayre Foundation recent gifting for the purchase of two all-terrain vehicles for Hawaii County Fire Dept. for Punaluu Beach and Hapuna Beach State Park so responders have the capability to quickly carry life-saving equipment and supplies to drowning victims and spinal cord injury victims

In 1997, 25-year-old Danny Sayre hiked to the back of Pololu Valley on the Big Island, near Kapaloa Falls, to visit the place he called his "cathedral." Tragically, that visit was Danny's last.

His devastated parents, Frank Sayre and Laura Mallery-Sayre, could only watch helplessly, as multiple attempts to rescue their son's body from a 500-foot fall to the valley floor below, failed. "That's when three men from the Fire Department volunteered to move forward with the mission, knowing that they were putting their own lives in danger," recalls Laura.

"We decided that a memorial fund honoring the Hawaii County Fire Department was the best way to show our gratitude," says Frank. 17 years the community has supported their cause with donations exceeding 1 million dollars, which are used exclusively to purchase rescue equipment required by the Fire Department. In the memory of one lost life, others have been saved is an understatement.

On another note...
Frank has been my dentist and fellow Detroiter at heart. I spent a great deal of time in his dentist chair and we shared Detroit stories. Frank has many fond memories of time at his grandparents home at Mack and Montcalm in Detroit. His Grandfather was a dentist with his office in the David Whitney Bldg. He shares some of those stories in our talk story.

I've known John & Judy Collins, Co-Founders of the Ironman in 1978 ever since Herb & I crossed the finish line at Ironman 1982 in Kona Hawaii. (yup, we even got the photo!)

A nice friendship developed with John & Judy over the years from having a mutual respect for some of the ways we each contributed to shaping the look and feel of Ironman in ways I remember so well.

I like sharing some of those stories. I think John & Judy do too.

I think the treads of history including right up to today that bring a story together is important and fun to keep alive. Make sense?

So that is what some of us do in this show. Andrea Bess is a 2014 participant. Lot of history in between ...

Thanks for listening. emily
