Episode 63It is Episode 63 of Therapy Thoughts with Lindsay, and today we are talking about The 4 Agreements and how to use them to improve your relationship communication. I have included more information below about these agreement and I would love for you to share in the comments how they show up in your life.

Episode 63 Audio Episode 63 Video The 4 AgreementsI love the book by Don Miguel Ruiz, The 4 Agreements. In my private practice, I use these agreements as a foundation to help couples stay on the right track or reset when needed. They are simple agreements to make, but they are not necessarily easy to keep. These agreements are not meant to be used a way to judge one another or hold each other emotionally hostage, but rather they are intended to help create a foundation for success

The 4 Agreements* Be Impeccable with Your Word * Don’t Take Things Personally * Don’t Make Assumptions * Always Do Your Best

Don Miguel Ruiz is the author of The 4 Agreements, and I highly recommend his book if you’d like to dive deeper into them. There is also a 3-book boxed set available that digs even deeper in the agreements and also offers insight into the 5th agreement. I’ll have to write more about this topic soon, as it has become such an integral part of my work with individual and relationship clients.

This post contains affiliate links, and I may receive a very small commission if you purchase through those links at no additional cost to you. Thank you for helping me out.

Be Impeccable with Your Word* Speak with Integrity * Say only what you mean * Avoid using the word to speak against yourself or to gossip about others * Use the power of your word in the direction of truth and love

Don’t Take Things Personally* Nothing other do is because of you * What others say and do is a projection of their own reality * When you are immune to the opinions and actions of others, you won’t be the victim of needless suffering

Don’t Make Assumptions* Find the courage to ask questions and to express what you really want * Communicate with others as clearly as you can to avoid misunderstandings, sadness, and drama * With just this one agreement, you can completely transform your life.

Always Do Your Best* Your best is going to change from moment to moment. It will be different when you are healthy as opposed to when you are sick * Under any circumstances, simply do your best, and you will avoid self-judgement, self-abuse and regret.

Episode 62It is Episode 62 of Therapy Thoughts with Lindsay and today we are are talking more about the idea of setting goals and a vision for the New Year in your relationship. I’m not a huge fan of making New Year’s resolutions, because I feel like they can set you up to feel frustrated or even like you’re not doing enough rather than focusing on the idea of making steady progress. I do like the idea of setting goals or visions for where you are headed from a relationship perspective. Maybe even picking a word, phrase or a quote you can use a way to ground you when things feel out of control or not on the same page. Would you share with me some of your relationship goals for this year?

Episode 61It’s Episode 61 of Therapy Thoughts with Lindsay and today we are talking about what it means to create a Relationship Reset.

As you listen, I want you to ask yourself, “What does It mean to be on the "Same Team" in your relationship?”.

Creating a patterns interrupt can hep reset when your relationship gets off track. My partner and I use “SFT or #SFT” as a pattern interrupt and in this episode I talk about how that came to be our phrase and what it means.

Even though we recorded this episode late last week, and many things have changed since then, I do still think it gives some insight into the current feelings any motions a lot of us are going through.

DISCI’m still in the process of going through my DISC certification program, and we spent some time on today’s episode talking about this assessment and how the different types show up in life. I will have more details on the DISC in some future episodes, and I can’t wait to dig into this topic more soon.

Episode 27Today is Episode 27 of Therapy Thoughts with Lindsay and we are still talking about relationships and communication. Today we spend some time talking about The 4 Agreements and ways to apply them in your life.

The 4 AgreementsI love the book by Don Miguel Ruiz, The 4 Agreements.

Today is Episode 25 of Therapy Thoughts with Lindsay, and we are still talking about ways to best communicate in your relationships.

Last week, I launched my FREE Relationship Communication Guide and it is available to you to download by clicking on the button below! I am so excited to offer this FREE resource as a way to help you start understanding a new way of communicating in your relationships.

One of the elements we will go through in my Relationship Reset Workshop is the process of understanding The 4 Tendencies as it relates to how you handle both internal and external expectations. The different tendencies show in all relationships and understanding how you’re showing up is so helpful in interacting with others. We spend quite a bit time in today’s episode talking about the different tendencies and the ways they may be showing up.

I highly recommend you take The 4 Tendencies quiz at this link if you’re curious to know how you show up in the world as it relates to expectations. Randy Cash is going to take the quiz, and in next week’s show we will go through a mini debrief session so you can get an idea of what it would be like to have a session with me to better understand your tendency and ways to interact with others in a healthy way.

Today is episode 24 of Therapy Thoughts with Lindsay, and we start the show today with some ridiculousness, and of course I’m cracking up at Randy Cash! LOL

We have made it to the end of January, and it is kinda hard to believe, but we are rocking and rolling into this new year of 2020.

My Relationship Reset Workshop starts on Saturday, and there is still plenty of time to join. You can find the link to sign up here, and I’m happy to answer any questions you may have about it. Once it kicks off, you can start at any time and take part in the workshop at your pace in the comfort of your home.

As a taste of what you can expect from the workshop, I have launched my Relationship Communication Guide as a FREE resource that you can download and start using in your relationships today! I get so many questions about how to communicate, so I created a guide to help. You can find the link to get this guide in my blog from this past Monday which can be found here, or you can click the button below to get the guide delivered to your email.

It is possible to develop healthy communication patterns in your life, and I hope you’ll check out this free resource to help you. We often shy away from having courageous conversations due to the fear of being vulnerable or because we don’t want to hurt someone’s feelings with our words. There are tactful ways to learn how to communicate effectively and I’m here to help if you want more information or if you’d like to have a session to discuss ways to improve the communication in your relationships.

We also spend some time today talking about the idea that the ways we respond to something reflects ourselves, but so often we want to offload that onto others. The projection I’m talking about is part of the Imago therapy work I do, and my Relationship Communication Guide helps to start you down the process of using “I-statements” to share your feelings, needs, wants and desires without blaming someone else for how you’re feeling.

Learning how to reframe your conversations to not focus on the blaming will help the flow of communication so so so much! It’s easier said than done, but it’s very possible to accomplish. Reflective courageous conversations require active listening in order to be successful, and my Relationship Communication Guide helps you start down this process.

We also spend some time talking about the process of infusing our communication with empathy and compassion rather defensiveness. We all want to be heard, and it needs to be balanced so that both parties get to share their thoughts and feelings. Keeping score is not the way to win when it comes to relationship success, and it is very possible to learn a new way of interacting.

Today we spend some time talking about Imago therapy and the subconscious image projection that occurs in relationships. Understanding what you’re projecting onto your partner and learning how to communicate your needs with your significant other is part of the process of creating a healthy relationship dynamic. We also spend some time talking about healthy boundaries and how to go about setting them.

It’s almost time for my Relationship Reset Workshop to kick off and there is still time to join, and we are going to be talking much more in detail about relationship communication and how to get or keep your relationship on track. Here is the link to sign up!

It’s Episode 22 of Therapy Thoughts!

Today we spend some time talking about the 5 Love Languages and how it is one of many important pieces to understanding your relationship. Although no one tool can solve all of the relationship struggles, the love languages serve as a framework to help tune into and become aware of how to meet your partners needs.

This is why it’s a part of my upcoming relationship reset workshop that starts soon.

We also spend some time talking about the importance of having courageous conversations so that small disagreements don’t fester and turn into big problems.

This time a year I have couples spend some time setting a relationship vision. I encourage couples to discuss and talk about goals that they have for the next 6 to 12 months, the next 3 to 5 years, in the next 10+ years. It’s very hard to hit a moving target, so this activity is a way to refocus attention and reconnect with your partner.

It’s time for more Therapy Thoughts with Lindsay. Today is episode 21!

We are talking about the new year and the kickoff to the new decade. As we shift into this new year, we spend some time talking about ways to reset and wipe the slate clean as we look forward to what will be and where we are headed.

It can be overwhelming to imagine starting with a clean slate. It’s important to keep your expectations in check. Rather than imagining you’re going to be a brand new person, try to remember that you are on a journey of living your best life. I am a huge proponent of setting intentions versus resolutions as a way to keep yourself on track. Consistency is the key, and it’s what adds up to lasting change and big results.

What would it look like if you started to live your life day by day instead of expecting perfection? Focus on the process of making progress and learning to move past what isn’t working. You always have a chance to hit the reset button in your life and begin again. You are never as stuck as you think you are, and moving forward is always possible.

In today’s episode, I also get really personal about my own process of learning to push myself forward even when I didn’t want to take care of myself. I have just as many days of struggle as everyone else, but I’m so glad that I’ve learned ways to stay on the path I’m on and to help myself reset whenever I don’t feel like it.

My new Love Yourself Well Workshop is going to be focused on these topics and so much more. The relationship you have with yourself will set the tone for all the other relationships in your life. This workshop will help you take a deep dive inward to start understanding how to get yourself unstuck and back on track with your journey of living your best life. You spend the majority of your life in your own head, so let’s work to make it a nice place to be.

Randy Cash turns 50 tomorrow, and he is cracking me up on today’s episode. I’m still cracking up at his idea that I should implement into my coaching work. It would require me to have a whistle, but you’ll have to listen to hear the whole story.

Here’s the link to the Love Yourself Workshop if you’d like more information about it, and I’d love to help you start this journey!

It’s Episode 16 of Therapy Thoughts with Lindsay!!!

On today’s show, we spend some time talking about the holidays and how our society is so focused on gift giving and shopping and spending money this time of year. I’m not at all against the giving of gifts, but I do think sometimes we place way to much importance on them rather than focusing on loving and connecting with the people who matter to us.

My blog this week was a self-help holiday gift guide, and I tried to give a good overview of some of my favorite self-care and self-help products. If you’d like to see my list of things, you can find it at this link.

It’s Episode 15 of Therapy Thoughts with Lindsay & Happy Thanksgiving!!!

On today’s show, we spend some time talking about the importance of setting healthy boundaries during the holidays. I wrote my blog last week on this same topic, so feel free to read it at this link if you’d like more information about ways to set boundaries in your life with your family.

We also talk about the concept I share with all my clients about the 3 questions you can ask yourself when engaging in conversation with others.

  1. Does it need to be said?
  2. Does it need to be said now?
  3. Does it need to be said by me?

I wish I could take complete credit for this brilliance, but the hilarious comedian Craig Ferguson came up with it. I heard it once while listening to him doing a stand-up comedy special, and I knew it was something I had to use with my clients. I even wrote a blog about it and ways to apply it to your life. If you’d like to read the post, you can find it here.

Today is Episode 10, and we are so excited to have you join us again this week. Back during Episode 7, we talked about relationships, breakups and staying friends with exes. I received so many questions about this after the episode launched, so in today’s episode, I’m answering some of those questions and I try to give some insight in to the process of staying friends with an ex.

I also spend some time talking about what I call Relationship PTSD, which is some Lindsay theory that has developed out of my clinical work with clients. Although it’s not a real diagnosis, I’m talking about the ways that our old baggage from past relationships shows up in our current relationships and other areas of our lives.

Then, we spend some time talking about the #NoComplainingChallenge I took part in recently. It was an amazing 30 day challenge, and I am so grateful for the growth it brought into my life and my mindset. There is another mindset challenge coming soon, so stay tuned.

I love all the questions coming in, so please keep submitting them to me!

Today is the 9th episode of Therapy Thoughts with Lindsay, and we are keeping it real and getting personal again this week.

Exactly 2 years ago today, I publicly shared my own #MeToo story and joined a movement that has dramatically and amazingly changed my life. I had never hidden from the truth of the rape I went through in college, but I had never owned it or shared it in a public way.

When I went back to school to be a therapist, I knew I wanted to work with survivors of trauma and abuse, and I feel so honored and privileged to have had the opportunity to help so many people reclaim their lives after enduring so much hurt.

As I saw the #MeToo trending on social media, I felt like I had to share. I decided that I wanted to use my story to help others heal and to see that it is possible to go from feeling like a victim to feeling like a survivor. I have always admired Randy Cash’s willingness to share his own story, and I really appreciate his openness as we discuss the #MeToo movement and why it’s still needed and how healing is possible.

I did write a blog post about my experience sharing my story publicly as well as the documentary project I took part in with Gazelle magazine in early 2018. Here’s the link to the blog post if you’d like to read more!

Today is the 8th episode of Therapy Thoughts with Lindsay, and I’m getting super personal today. Tomorrow is National Coming Out Day, and I’m sharing my own coming out story. It took me 32 years to fully own my own truth and share it with the world. The freedom that has come from living my life authentically is almost hard to put into words, but I’ve never been happier.

It has been 3 years since I officially came out publicly on National Coming Out Day, but the process of coming out took a lot of soul searching, honesty, bravery, courage, and willingness to push past my own fears and worries. I want to share about my own coming out process and hopefully use my story to show others that it is possible to own your truth no matter how long you’ve been hiding it or running from it.

And this way it still stays in theme with all the other things I have going on, but it is distinct enough to set it apart as it’s own show.

My divorce is officially final today, so we are digging into the topics of marriage, divorce, breakups, moving on, healing, and ways to stay friends with your ex! We squeeze a lot into one episode, but we had a lot to say!

Today is the 6th episode of Therapy Thoughts. We have decided to change the title of the show just a bit. Starting next week, it will be Therapy Thoughts with Lindsay Walden. That way it still stays in theme with all the other things I have going on, but it is distinct enough to set it apart as it’s own show.

This week is all about Courageous Conversations! Do you have courageous conversations in your life? Are you saying what you mean and meaning what you say? It is definitely a process of becoming comfortable with having courageous conversations, but it is possible. And, I would argue it’s necessary for success in relationships!

I know we will definitely be revisiting this topic again in the future, so stay tuned for more tips on how to be courageous in your relationships and in your life!

In the meantime, if you’d like to read more about this concept of courageous conversations, I have written 3 blogs on the topic:
