Did you know that practicing self assertion in low stakes situations makes you more likely (and more comfortable) doing so in high stakes situations? This is one of the important ways you can help protect the children in your life from things as simple as boundary violations to things as serious as assault. Give this re-release episode a listen today for some easy ideas to help your child practice saying “NO.” As an extra bonus, if you give them chances to say no to you, they are more likely to cooperate.

This week we're doing a deep dive on ways to grow gratitude for you and those in your care. So often, especially around the holidays, we can feel scarcity mindset creeping up on us. However Thanksgiving, in particular, is a celebration of the abundance of life and an opportunity to work our gratitude muscles. And the most beautiful part is, the more you practice being thankful, the easier it becomes!

This week's guest, David Rue, is the creator and host of an amazing bedtime stories podcast called Biddy Stories! We talk about the importance of creating a bedtime ritual, based in connection and love. Biddy Stories is the internet's only sitcom style podcast for kids, pure and simple. There's nothing else like it. The humor is tailored for both the kids and the grownups... Think of us as a joint spinoff of Mr. Rogers and The Office with a hint of Bugs Bunny thrown in for good measure. David is a 10 year veteran podcaster with his family focused "Biddy Stories" podcast. He hails from Minnesota and is an elementary school music teacher, a choir director, a husband and a father to 3 outstanding children. David’s podcast mission is to help families understand that…. “If you go to sleep laughing, you’ll wake up smiling.”

When this week's guest, Lesley Koplow, couldn't find a book to address the current struggles of little ones during COVID-19, she decided to write one herself! "Lilah in the Land of The Littles is a story for children in the time of Covid. Lilah is struggling with all of the changes in her life brought about by the Coronavirus." This book is a wonderful resource to help you start talking to your little ones about their feelings around the abrupt changes over the past year due to Covid. It offers imaginative play as the antidote to the stress of being in isolation for a year now! I highly recommend this book and the conversations that come along with reading it!

As we reach a year into quarantine, it seems fitting to do an episode about grief. Many of us have been forced to deal with grief over the past year in a much more up close way than maybe at any other time in our lives. Hundreds of thousands of people have died during the past year and, as a community, we have taken little to no time to sit with that loss. Whether someone you know has died or you're grieving other sorts of losses, Shannon MacFarlane helps guide us through some ways to support those around us and ourselves when grief is present, no matter the reason. Happy Valentine's Day, dear listener! I am delighted to be joined today by Shada Lambert (also known as Nanny Sharz) to talk about teaching bodily autonomy and consent. I could not think of a better way to celebrate a holiday about love than talking about bodily autonomy and consent. Both those concepts are crucial to healthy relationships, romantic, familial, or platonic! The pandemic has made every care task in our day just that much more challenging. I do not know about you, listener, but I have had times of really struggling to complete basic tasks over the past year. To help us reexamine what it means to "keep house" I've invited on KC Davis from Struggle Care to talk about how detaching moral judgements from care tasks can help in so many ways! We also talk about closing duties and other strategies to help your home serve you instead of you serving your home!

This episode covers a lot! Alex Hiam and I discuss his book, Silent Lee and the Adventure of the Side Door Key. He talk about ways to help raise writers and creators. We also talk about being adopted and ways a nanny can help with that journey for a child and their family. But I think my favorite part of this episode was talking about how to raise strong protagonists!

For the past 70 years, animated films have distorted the way moviegoers view African Americans, saysJennifer Collins Bloomquist, professor of Africana Studies and linguistics at Gettysburg College. Bloomquist has examined the language used to create “Black” characters in animated films, and has found repeated racial stereotypes. While some progress has been made, she believes there is much more that filmmakers should do.

As part of her ongoing research and to enrich her forthcoming book, From Dumbo to Donkey: Linguistic Minstrelsy in Children’s Animated Films (Oxford University Press), Bloomquist also has conducted focus groups with children to determine the impact of these stereotyped messages on young audiences. I am so excited to talk to her about this important subject!

Did you know that babies begin to notice race at 6 months old? Talking with your nanny kids about race and racism is so important but it can feel like an overwhelming topic for some of us. Dr. Camp from Northeastern Illinois University joins us to discuss how we, as nannies, can approach this important topic. Kids are naturally curious. Let's help teach them to be respectfully curious! This episode also features a story from Pasty Andall! Thank you, Patsy!

Many occupations have a break (or several) built right into the day. Nannying doesn't come with built in breaks. Even when your nanny kids still nap, that time is so often dedicated to getting tasks done that it's rarely used to recharge. Whether you know it or not, Maria Montessori's life work has had an impact on your nannying. Tiffany Otwell, of the Montessori Children's House, joins us to discuss the ways we can incorporate Montessori teachings into our days as nannies! She makes the excellent point that, as nannies, we can allow children the time to learn a new skill or try something that may be hard for them over and over. As Maria Montessori said, "Never help a child with a task at which he feels he can succeed."

Children often spend their days being told exactly what to do and when to do it. If you truly put yourself in the shoes of a child and think through their day, it becomes clear that they are often not given the opportunity to make choices which leads to self doubt within the child and power struggles between you and the child. In this episode, recorded LIVE at Nannypalooza, Cady Leinicke and I discuss ways to hold space for your nanny kids to make decisions throughout their day!

There are also some of the sweetest stories from fellow nannies. This episode was a joy to record. Thank you, Sue Downey, for this amazing opportunity!

As nannies, we are given a special opportunity to meet every kid where they are and find strategies and methods to support children that may not be feasible in a classroom setting. This week, I've invited my friend and wonderful teaching artist, David Smith to talk us through some games and strategies to work with children who are on the spectrum. The beauty of all the games discussed here, however, is that they are great games to play with any kid! So even if you're not currently working with a child who has autism, this episode still offers valuable insight for meeting every child where they are and building from there!

My nanny kids have fallen in love with this podcast and it has helped us talk about creating stories together in a whole new way! Lee also offers some wonderful advice for fostering creativity in your little one! Childcare, and especially early childcare, is sometimes seen as a stereotypically feminine career. Even the word “Nanny” can be traced back to the Welsh word “nain” meaning grandmother, the Greek word “nánna” meaning aunt, and the Russian word “nyánya” meaning nursemaid. In fact, only 10% of those who call themselves nannies are male. This week on Chronicles of Nannya, my guest (Parker Guidry) and I challenge that stereotype. Hard. With an extended episode, we talk about gender stereotypes from nannies themselves to the kids they nanny. We discuss the term “Manny” and Parker has plenty of wonderful stories from his years of experience in childcare. This episode is packed full and not to be missed! Be sure to send in pictures of your little ones in their Halloween Costumes and your cute quotes and stories for us to read on the end of the show! If you nanny for siblings, then you've most likely encountered sibling rivalries. This week my guest, Taryn Pryor, and I discuss strategies to help stop sibling rivalries before they even start! From how to help prepare an only child who is going to be an older sibling to how to handle playdates when one sibling is left out to how to quickly stop that biting phase before it even gets started, this episode has it all! Housekeeping: Calling all nannies! We are looking for YOUR stories to share at the end of each episode! If you have a cute quote or story from the little ones you nanny, please send them into chroniclesofnannya@gmail.com! We will never share the name of the child (please don't even include it), but their age is helpful and we would love to share your name!

Nannies are busy! Each week we will release a 5 minute clip from the episode that highlights the important lesson from that episode! Here is the short clip from Episode 6 - Kindness! In it, my guest, Cady Leinike, discusses the importance of modeling behavior you want to see for the little eyes that are looking to you for guidance. If you don't have time to listen to the full episode, or you're trying to decide which episodes to make time for, listening to the highlight is a wonderful way to get an idea of what each episode is about! This week I was lucky enough to have Cady Leinike back to talk about Kindness. Our world could use a little more kindness, don’t you think? So, in this episode, Cady and I discuss how to help foster empathy in the kids you nanny and how to get started on a “Kindness Project” with them! We talk about small gestures that you can start incorporating right away, and also offer advice for setting examples that will stick with the kids you nanny into adulthood. If you’ve struggled to see the good in the world lately, this episode is just the boost you need to help foster kindness not only in the kids you nanny, but in yourself too!

Happy October! Halloween is just around the corner, so this week I brought in an expert costume designer from New York City, Heather McDevitt Barton, to talk us through how to design and build the perfect Halloween Costume for the little ones in your life! Heather not only designs costumes for the children's program at Atlantic Theatre Company, but she also works as a freelance costume designer for families! She talks us through where to begin with a complicated costume, how to shop on a tight budget, and how to find valuable teaching moments as you talk through ideas with kids! This episode will get you ready to take on any Halloween costume challenge! Please note, in order to get this wonderful interview, Heather and I had to record over the phone. The slight decrease in sound quality was worth it to get this amazing interview!

Have you considered becoming a nanny but you’re not quite sure how to break into the profession? This episode is made for you! I got to sit down with the amazing Leah Frires to discuss ways to break into the wonderful profession that is nannying. We both share how we got started as nannies and offer up many avenues to explore if being a nanny is right for you! And don’t worry; we know that we barely touch on Nannying Agencies. I’m saving that for its own episode, promise!

This week my guest, Cady Leinicke, and I get to share one of our absolute favorite nanny tools, The Magic Box! The Magic Box is a wonderful way to help children who have separation anxiety feel more secure and to deepen the nanny/child bond. Cady is one of my closest friends and also one of the most knowledgable nannies I have ever met. I am so excited she came on the podcast to share this wonderful tool!
