Charlie Brown and the gang ruled the comics pages for fifty years. As animated characters, they have appeared in five feature films, eight episodes of "This is America, Charlie Brown" , ten motion comics on iTunes, eighteen episodes of "The Charlie Brown and Snoopy Show", and some forty-five TV specials. On this podcast, we're going to watch them all. Then we'll talk about what we liked, what we didn't. Remember, of all the Charlie Browns in world, you're the Charlie Browniest.
Much like Schroeder pulls great art from a little toy piano, 142 pulls a dandy episode from my meager talent. We've got This Month in Peanuts History, a look at an episode of "Peanuts by Schulz" called "Even the Score", and we take a look at the greatest pianist since Rachmaninov as Schroeder gets his own Character Study. What's he like? Why is he like that? What's his role in the strip? Why piano and not the pan flute? So many questions. And we address them all in 142!

In 140, we dig through the basement and drag the old timey console television upstairs so we can watch the 1973 Hallmark Hall of Fame production of "You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown". Ok, Not really. But it turns out despite a reputation for never working with an assistant, there was an exception - the original comic books published in the late fifties and early sixties. In 101, we check out "The Snoopy Show", S3, episode 4 - which is apparently a celebration of all things snail mail. Rememer snail mail? Kids, go ask your parents. The plot of each story in the episode hinges on at least one letter sent through regular ol' US Mail. Coincidence? Yeah, probably. Or maybe not...hmmm.
We've also got a "Random Strip of the Month", plus your feedback on peanut-y things and news from the world of Peanuts!

And then....
Recently, I read Monte Schulz's 2022 novel "Metropolis". Since the remit of this podcast is anything and everything in AND around the "Peanuts" universe, I decided that was close enough. So let's talk about it!

When you think of Peanuts, what's the first thing that comes to mind?
Wrong!
Obviously, the answer is Shermy! The OG Peanuts superstar! Peanuts wouldn't exist without him. If that October 2, 1950 strip was just a boy and girl silently watch a round-headed kid walk by, also silently, it's unlikely Peanuts would have become the cultural icon it is today. I mean, at least Shermy thinks so probably.
In this episode, we take a few minutes to break down who Shermy Plepler was and his impact (Or lack thereof. Let's be honest.) on the strip.
We also look at This Month in Peanuts History for June and watch another "Peanuts by Schulz" titled "The Mysteries of Love".

Hey, everybody. I took a little break from producing the latest episode to enjoy a little theatre. I attended opening night of a production of Bert V. Royal's play "Dog Sees God: Confessions of a Teenage Blockhead", a reimagining of the Peanuts kids as teenagers dealing with some heavy issues. Homophobia, suicide, sex, drugs, death and life. Good grief there's a lot of stuff.
Anyway, here's a bonus episode with my thoughts.
(If you want to hear me talk more about the play and Bert Royal, as well as my chat with the director of a different production of the play, check out episode 55.
In episode 73, either all those voices in my head have spilled out onto the podcast, OR this episode is nearly bursting at the seams with INTERVIEWS! Good grief!
We've got the hosts of the new podcast "Unpacking Peanuts": Jimmy Gownley, Michael Cohen and Harold Buchholz. I tried real hard not to let my jealousy over their perfect pod-naming color our conversation.
THEN, for the first time since this pod was in it's 30's (episode numbers, that is), author/illustrator Jason Yungbluth returns. He's got a follow up to his Peanuts-in-a-Dsytopian-Hellscape graphic novel "Weapon Brown" called "Weapon Brown: Aftershock". And YOU can help make it happen by supporting the Kickstarter.
Exclusive: I'm told MAYBE, just maybe, if the kickstarter meets its stretch goal, I could be immortalized as a (probably gruesomely killed) character in a "Weapon Brown" story. So gather your pennies!

The glow of the Peanuts Universe is a bit dimmer this month in episode 70 of IT'S A PODCAST, CHARLIE BROWN. Peter Robbins, the original voice of Charlie Brown on TV and film passed away at age 65 after a life full of highs and far two many lows. We take a few minutes this episode to remember him.
We also talk about episode 13 of season 1 of Apple TV's "The Snoopy Show", enjoy a "Random Strip of the Month", a "Peanuts by Schulz" episode called "The Last of the Bunch" and many other things not in quotations.

We're watching the legendary 1986 student film "Bring Me the Head of Charlie Brown" in which the Great Pumpkin puts out a hit on our man Chuck and the Peanuts kids try to collect.
We also check out "The Snoopy Show", season 1, episode 12, which is decidedly less violent.
We also have an episode of "Peanuts by Schulz", a "Random Strip of the Month" and other things. So put down your weapons and pick up your pod-listening device!

Remember how when we were kids, we'd celebrate New Year's Eve at, like, 5 p.m. because midnight was too far away? Episode 68 of IT'S A PODCAST, CHARLIE BROWN is a little like that.
Even though this episode drops December 15, we're going to a New Year's Eve party! We've got the BRAND NEW special "Snoopy Presents: For Auld Lang Syne". How new? So new, I had to cram my review of it into the rest of the pre-recorded episode to get it out to you!
Then we check out S1, episode 11 of "The Snoopy Show", a "Peanuts by Schulz" short called "On the Campaign Trail" and enjoy another "Random Strip of the Month".

Before "Peanuts", there was "Li'l Folks"! In episode 65 of IT'S A PODCAST, CHARLIE BROWN, we chat a little about Sparky's single-panel comic that he did before "Peanuts". How different would our world be had he syndicated that one instead of "Peanuts"? Artist Robert Pope returns to the podcast to discuss that very question...and many others.
We've also got S1, ep 8 of AppleTV's "The Snoopy Show", another "Random Strip of the Month" (Send us an Mp3 of your own!) and a "Peanuts by Schulz" review for the episode "Frieda".

IT'S A PODCAST, CHARLIE BROWN episode 62 offers up shocks - Schulz wasn't a one-comic man in the '50s! He also did, with Jim Sasseville, the sport-themed gag panels "It's Only a Game". The scandal!
Tearful goodbyes - episode 6 of "The Snoopy Show" is the S1 finale!
And the makings of an international incident - Author/publisher/"peanuts nerd" Nat Gertler tells us why we should hate Canada. As if we needed another reason! (Kidding!)

I am on record as saying Woodstock is one of my favorite characters, so I was thrilled to have voice actor Rob Tinkler on episode 60 of IT'S A PODCAST, CHARLIE BROWN. We talk about how he gets inside the head of a little yellow bird who doesn't talk to voice Woodstock on "The Snoopy Show" and "Snoopy in Space". We also talk about other things he's worked on and the craft of voice acting.
Also on this episode: a discussion of "The Snoopy Show", season 1, episode 4; another "Peanuts by Schulz", titled "Have a Nice Day, Linus", and we find out Rob's favorite "Random Strip of the Month"!

"The Snoopy Show" debuted on February 5 and this month on episode 58 of IT'S A PODCAST, CHARLIE BROWN, we watch and discuss the first two episodes of the six-episode season one. Is the show a tasty, televisual meal of jelly beans and toast or the bitter disappointment of a pulled-away football?

Remember travel? It's a thing people used to do before the pandemic.
This month in episode 57, we vicariously take a trip abroad as Peppermint Patty, Marcie, Snoopy, Linus and good ol' Charlie Brown become exchange students in France. But mystery awaits our intrepid travelers. Who is Silas Brown? Who is Violette? Why were Linus and Charlie Brown invited to stay at a creepy old chateau? How dangerous is the baron who vows to get rid of them no matter the consequences? How is Snoopy paying for all that root beer?

We may still be in the time of Covid, but episode 55 of the podcast is going to the theatre...virtually. We're exploring Bert V. Royal's 2004 play "Dog Sees God: Confessions of a Teenage Blockhead". It's a self-described "Peanuts parody" imagining the Peanuts gang as teens dealing with LGBTQ issues, substance abuse, violence and issues of identity and place in the world.
To give us some perspective on why we need this play and why we need it right now, we chat with Muscatine (Iowa) Community College theatre director Alyssa Oltmanns, whose controversial production of "Dog Sees God" premieres virtually on November 20 and 21, 2020. Proceeds of the play go to support Clock Inc. of the Quad Cities.

IT'S A PODCAST, CHARLIE BROWN episode 54! A GREAT episode for a GOOD man!
The good man in question is, of course, our man Chuck Brown. We talk about the history of iconic stage musical YOU'RE A GOOD MAN, CHARLIE BROWN. We cover the original 1966 "concept" album to the 1967 off-Broadway production, to Broadway, to TV (including the 1985 animate feature) and beyond.

EPISODE 50! We made it!
Because people think numbers ending in "5" and "0" are significant, and, let's say, in honor of the Peanuts secondary player "5" and because, as Peppermint Patty tells Franklin, "In answer to your question, Franklin, I think we know who the ZERO is..." we thought this month we'd talk to a man steeped in the 70 year (another number ending in zero) history of our favorite comic.
Author/publisher/blogger of the "Aaugh Blog", aboutcomics.com and so many other things, Nat Gertler returns to the show for the first time since episode 13. He has been exploring "Peanuts" filmstrips from 1979 like the ones many of us watched in school. So turn out the overhead fluorescent lights, roll the projector and give a listen. Now that Easter is over and you've had a chance to clean up the mess from the Easter Bunny lobbing eggs over your fence in deference to social distancing, here's episode 48 of the podcast to relax with.
We've got an interview with Gini Holtzman who, back in the day, provided the voice for "Peppermint Patty" in a number of TV episodes, including "Snoopy's Reunion" and the iconic "It's Flashbeagle, Charlie Brown". What was it like to make these shows? What did Charles Schulz give her? What does she think Peppermint Patty would be like as a grown up? Springtime. And the livin' is easy!
Okay, actually things are kind of brutal out there right now. But that makes this the perfect time to self-medicate with more PEANUTS! And episode 47 is just the tonic you need!
From 1992, we're watching IT'S SPRING TRAINING, CHARLIE BROWN where Mr. Hennessey from CHARLIE BROWN'S ALL-STARS (episode 1!) offers new uniforms to the baseball team. Yay! All Chuck and the gang need to do is win a game! AAUUGH!
Then we check out two installments of iTunes' 2008 experiment MOTION COMICS, a series of very short episodes produced with "limited animation" (don't let that scare you". We're checking out "The Sore Arm" and "Independence Day".
We've also got a "Peanuts by Schulz" short "It's Raining, It's Pouring". And, as always, a Random Strip of the Month. This is a good time to remind you to...ahem...SEND IN YOUR RANDOM STRIPS OF THE MONTH!
Thank you.

Phew! After many technical glitches, episode 43 is here. Sorry about the lost five minutes in the second half of the show. Try to enjoy!
The TV episodes featured in episode 43 find Charlie Brown first trying to get rid of one of the Peanuts gang - Lucy - and then trying to bring one into the fold - Snoopy. In the end, of course, the Peanuts universe rights itself and Peanuts Town is harmonious once again.
We're watching "Lucy Must be Traded, Charlie Brown", which originally aired August 29, 2003 and "Snoopy's Reunion" from May 1, 1991. Plus! A "Peanuts by Schulz" short called "Good Sports".

Good grief! This month in episode 41 of the podcast, actor Brad Kesten learns the danger of reaching out to podcasters and saying things like (a) I really like your show and (b) I was the voice of Charlie Brown on TV. When you do that, you end up getting drafted to be on the show.
Brad was the voice of Charlie Brown for most of the run of "The Charlie Brown & Snoopy Show", in "It's Flashbeagle, Charlie Brown" and other Peanuts specials. He also worked in front of the camera and did voice work on a lot of other things many of us watched in the '80s. And now he's on the podcast!

In the 1980s, Charles Schulz and his son Monte Schulz set out to create the "Citizen Kane" of Peanuts specials. The result was 1988's IT'S THE GIRL IN THE RED TRUCK, CHARLIE BROWN.
In this special, scripted by the two Schulzes, we find animated cartoon Spike wandering around live-action Needles, California - ala "Who Framed Roger Rabbit?" - where he meets up with Jenny, played by Schulz daughter Jill Schulz. There's lots of driving around in the titular red truck, falling aluminum cans and...gunfire?
"Citizen Kane"? Well, you can decide for yourself.
We've also got Peanuts news, another "Random Strip of the Month" and a "Peanuts by Schulz" short called "No Strings Attached".

Playwright Jack McManus returns to the podcast this month to discuss one of his favorite Peanuts specials: "Why, Charlie Brown, Why?" from 1990. This first TV special of the 90's arose out of Schulz's desire to honestly talk to kids about cancer. One of the Peanuts kids is diagnosed with leukemia and we follow the others as they process this information. It's a heavy episode. Does it manage to both entertain and inform?
Unfortunately, there were some audio issues that makes Jack hard to hear for a lot of the discussion. Don't give up, though, it's good stuff if you just bump up the volume a little. My apologies.

It's time to start the music! It's time to light the lights! It's time to get things started on the....oh, wait. That's the Muppet Show.
Anyway, we're talking about the 1988 animated version of SNOOPY THE MUSICAL on the podcast this month. So, to be clear: there was a comic strip called "Peanuts" (you may have heard of it) that became a stage show called SNOOPY THE MUSICAL, which, in turn, was turned into an animated TV special. Got it?
All right, the usher will now show you to your seats as the show is about to start. Please make sure your phones are turned off...NO! Wait! Don't do that! You won't be able to hear the show!

On episode 36, it's the return of author/illustrator Jason Yungbluth! Several months ago, Jason appeared on the show and offhandedly commented that his "favorite" Peanuts special is the 1976 "IT'S ARBOR DAY, CHARLIE BROWN". So...I invited him back to the show to defend that dubious position. That'll teach him to express an opinion!

Greetings, fellow blockheads! IT'S A PODCAST, CHARLIE BROWN Episode 35 is here!
Just so you're not confused, I messed with the schedule this month and not just because this episode is dropping a day late. We've still got a random strip of the month. We've still got a "Peanuts by Schulz" short (this one is called "Reach for the Stars"). We even still have episode 17 (the penultimate one!) of "The Charlie Brown & Snoopy Show".
BUT, we're shelving the planned "A Good Man, Charlie Brown" discussion until a later date. I had the unexpected good fortune of booking an interview with playwright Jack McManus about his new musical "Sparky", which debuted earlier this year in New York. The play presents significant points in Schulz's life and sounds very cool. I think you'll agree the scheduling change was well worth it.
Even we blockheads get it right once in a while.

This month, episode 34 is booting one through the ol' uprights with not one but TWO football themed episodes.
First up is IT'S YOUR FIRST KISS, CHARLIE BROWN from 1977. Charlie Brown's kicking prowess is all that stands between victory and defeat in the big Homecoming game. (Never mind that this is usually a high school thing. Peppermint Patty has a game to win!) Will the Little-Red-Haired-Girl-turned-Homecoming-Queen have Chuck banished from the royal realm? How much power do Homecoming queens actually have?
Next, we check out YOU'RE IN THE SUPERBOWL, CHARLIE BROWN. Except he's not. This 1994 tie-in with that year's Superbowl finds World Famous Coach Snoopy trying to lead his team of birds to Animal Football League glory while Linus and Charlie Brown vie for the affections of New Girl in Town Melodie Melodie even as they get ready for the "punt pass kick" contest where they could win a new bike..also, a Superbowl ticket. Just one though.
Does that Superbowl one sound fun? Want to buy a copy to watch? You can! If you time travel to 1994! And get your gas at Shell Stations! And still have a functioning VHS player! Listen to the episode to have this explained. But if you time travel BEFORE you listen, you'll spoil the ending.
We've also got a "Peanuts by Schulz" short called "Company" and another "Random Strip of the Month". Send us your Random Strip submissions right now … after you listen, of course.
Here's the 1999 Hartford Current article expressing the belief that Schulz overstayed his welcome.

This month on the podcast, all of the Peanuts secrets are revealed...
Okay, not really. But we do have a conversation with Benjamin Clark, curator of the Charles M. Schulz Museum and Research Center in Santa Rosa, California. Benjamin gives us some insight into the daily life of a curator, how exhibits are put together, and a LOT of exciting things coming up in coming years. I even asked him, as the keeper of all things Peanuts, what is REALLY inside Snoopy's doghouse.
Want to know the answer? Tune in to this episode!
We've also got one of the few remaining "Charlie Brown & Snoopy Show" episodes (#16 to be specific). In this one, the Peanuts gang boldly goes where no Peanut has gone before. At least it felt that way.
We've also got a "Peanuts by Schulz" episode called "Nice Doggy" and another "Random Strip of the Month".
Chew your cookies loud as you want (It'll make sense after you listen) and tune in! Thanks!

Good grief, happy holidays, everybody!
Episode 32, IT'S CHRISTMASTIME AGAIN, CHARLIE BROWN, was just too darn big for one podcaster, so I called in a partner. Paul Johnson, host of "Total Stickcast" and a new show, "The Happy News Podcast" drops by. Together, we woof, meow, moo, whatever (you'll get that after this episode) through this story as Christmas commercialism gets revenge on Charlie Brown, Peppermint Patty searches for the Christmas sheep within, and - hark! - Sally hears...well, you'll see.
We've also got a "Peanuts by Schulz" short called "Christmas is Coming" and another in our ongoing "Random Strip of the Month" segment. If YOU would like to share your favorite strip, or even just pick one at random, just record your thoughts and email them to me at charliebrownpodcast@gmail.com

This month, we've got author/illustrator Jason Yungbluth talking about his post-apocalyptic take on adult versions of the Peanuts gang in "Weapon Brown". We've also got September 1985 the fifteenth episode of "The Charlie Brown & Snoopy Show", which isn't apocalyptic, but does feature Charlie Brown in a pelican costume. So there's that.
We've also got another "Random Strip of the Month" (make sure to send your submissions for this segment!)
And we review another "Peanuts by Schulz" episode titled "Security".

The first one to catch that in the intro to this month's podcast I call this episode 29, when it is in fact episode 30, wins ONE MILLION DOLLARS. Oh, hey! I won! Oh, but I don't have a million dollars....
Anyway, we've got a pleasingly odd episode this month. From 1985, we dive into season two of "The Charlie Brown & Snoopy Show" with episode 14. I don't know what sort of medication Schulz, Melendez and Medelson were on when they came up with this episode, but pass some over here, guys.
After that, we've got a second installment in what I guess now constitutes a recurring series of Peanuts character studies, wherein I ramble on for a few minutes about a particular character and that character's place in the neighborhood. This month's victim is: PIG-PEN.
We've also got a Random Strip of the Month and a review of another episode of "Peanuts by Schulz" called "Let it Snow".

This month, we're watching "IT'S FLASHBEAGLE, CHARLIE BROWN" from 1984 and a 1983 episode of "THE CHARLIE BROWN & SNOOPY SHOW". In the former, we soar like and an eagle. In the latter, when we do the Pig-Pen hoedown, we really kick up some dust.

Episode 27 is shall we say...adventurous?
Not all of us get to experience this month's Comic-Con adventure, so we have to make our own adventure, which is not a problem with the 1983 "IT'S AN ADVENTURE, CHARLIE BROWN" and, also from 1983, another episode of "THE CHARLIE BROWN & SNOOPY SHOW". Marcie is a football star! Kite-eating trees! Running from the law! Angelic messages! And Charlie Brown's head in a sack!
If that's not adventure, I don't know what is!
This month's "Peanuts by Schulz" short was "Not My Day".

This is a month of fond and not so fond farewells. In IS THIS GOODBYE, CHARLIE BROWN? from 1983, Mr. VanPelt has been transferred so Linus and Lucy have to move away! Will Charlie Brown get over the loss of his best friend? What will become of Linus's blanket? Will Charlie Brown follow through on the promise Peppermint Patty made for him to take her out to forget about his loss? Or will he leave her on the porch?
In episode ten of THE CHARLIE BROWN & SNOOPY SHOW, also from 1983, in a not-so-fond farewell, Lucy kicks Linus out of the house! Lucy herself is kicked off the baseball team! Peppermint Patty's dad is out of town and she shacks up in Charlie Brown's guest shack. Snoopy doesn't want to lose the "neighborhood dog of the year" contest.
Plus, I give a report about my visit to the traveling "Snoopy & the Red Baron" exhibit at the Elmhurst History Museum in Elmhurst, Illinois. It's leaving Elmurst June 17 and going to other points unknown. More farewells!
The Peanuts by Schulz short this month was "Off Key". Nobody goes anywhere in that one, I don't think.

Have you ever packed a suitcase for a trip?
Don't worry. I'm going somewhere with this.
If you have packed a suitcase, you know sometimes you have too many sweaters and Snoopy print underwear to stuff in there.
Episode 25, it turns out, was kind of like that. There was just TOO MUCH SHOW to stuff in there. Thus, this bonus episode was born.
The Elmhurst History Museum in Elmhurst, Illinois is the FIRST IN THE NATION to host the Charles M. Schulz traveling exhibit "Snoopy and the Red Baron". In this centennial year since the end of WWI, the exhibit is a celebration of Snoopy's alter ego, the World War I Flying Ace, as well as a history lesson about the war. And it's going on RIGHT NOW. You should go see it! I'm going to!
So, I got a chance to talk to David Oberg, executive director of the Elmhurst History Museum in Elmhurst, Illinois about the museum and the exhibit. Snoopy's Sopwith Camel zooms away from Elmhurst on June 17 so I decided not to hold onto this conversation for episode 26, but instead put it out for you right now. Enjoy!
Thanks again to Dave Oberg for taking some to talk to me about the museum and the Snoopy & The Red Baron exhibit.

Episode 25 of the podcast is a celebration! No, really, it's in the title.
We're watching A CHARLIE BROWN CELEBRATION from 1982. I'll bet Lucy hates that concept. Is the party that is this HOUR LONG episode worth show up for?
The undercard for this month's episode is a new segment on the podcast. I do a deep dive into the origins and history of Snoopy's alter-ego The World Famous Author, which, of all his personas, is the one most near-and-dear to my heart.
Of course, we also have a new "Random Strip of the Month" and check out another "Peanuts by Schulz" short. This one is called "Man's Best Friend".
Whether it's bright and sunny or a Dark and Stormy Night, I hope you enjoy this month's episode!

For episode 24 of the podcast, it would be cool if I had a clever tie in to twenty-four hours in a day. But I don't.
What I do have is my conversation with Stephen Lind, author of the 2015 book A Charlie Brown Religion, which is much more than a mere Schulz biography. Lind does a deep dive into Schulz's faith and outlook on the world. You need to read this. (After you listen to the conversation, of course.)
We also take a look at episode 9 of "The Charlie Brown & Snoopy Show" from October 29, 1983, in which lots of people are cruel to other people and some of them get punched for it. Including a tree.
We also hear another "Random Strip of the Month" and a review of a "Peanuts by Schulz" short called "Telling Stories".

So...yeah, this month's episode is a wee bit late. Sorry 'bout that. I had a hard time getting into the podcast studio to finish the editing on the episode, what with all these NO DOGS ALLOWED signs around. I guess that's what I get for wearing my Snoopy costume as every day wear.
But episode 23 is finally here. We're talking about the Peanuts gang's second theatrical outing, SNOOPY COME HOME from 1972. Snoopy's feeling unwanted at home and around town (NO DOGS ALLOWED!). Will the return of a mysterious figure from Snoopy's past lure him away?
We also have a "Peanuts by Schulz" review. This month's short is called "Woodstock". (Woot woot! We love Woodstock!)
We'll also enjoy another "Random Strip of the Month". (You, too, can send me a "random strip" audio to play on the show. Please do!)

This month on episode 22, we put Peppermint Patty, who has barely had time to rest since winning musical chairs last month in "Happy New Year, Charlie Brown", through her paces. First, we explore which came first: the peppermint patty candy or the character. Then, in NO TIME FOR LOVE, CHARLIE BROWN (which first aired 3/11/73), a field trip to the art museum puts her feelings for ol' Chuck on display. (See what I did there?)
Next, we have an episode from THE CHARLIE BROWN & SNOOPY SHOW, which originally aired 12/10/83, in which Charlie Brown's rage at the kite-eating tree and Peppermint Patty's jealousy at her campmate, the little red-haired girl, prove to be the undoing of both of them.
We also watch a "Peanuts by Schulz" short called "Too Cold" and we have another "Random Strip of the Month".

This month, episode 21 of the podcast is unofficially the month of the VanPelts. In 1981's "Someday You'll Find Her, Charlie Brown", Linus is in his familiar role as the best, but ultimately clueless as everyone is in Peanuts Town, friend to Charlie Brown. The two boys stalk, er, search for the beautiful girl our man Chuck fell in love with after seeing her briefly during a "honey shot" on TV in the crowd at a football game. Will they find her? Will she fall in love in return? Will she prosecute? Tune in to find out!
Next, the three VanPelt siblings - Linus, Lucy and Rerun - feature prominently throughout the seventh episode of "The Charlie Brown & Snoopy Show", which originally aired 9/24/83. Even the VanPelt family matriarch makes an appearance. No Mr. VanPelt though. Maybe he and Mr. Brown went bowling or something.
We also have a fine "Random Strip of the Month" from listener Josh, a special audio report from listener William, and a review of the "Peanuts by Schulz" short called "Word of Mouth".

Should old acquaintance be forgot?
No way! There's a party in Peanuts Town!
First up this month, from 2003, the Van Pelt's youngest sibling Rerun just wants a dog for Christmas in the appropriately titled I WANT A DOG FOR CHRISTMAS, CHARLIE BROWN. Could Spike be the answer to his canine dreams? Maybe, IF Rerun can survive the rides on the back of Mom's bike and, in a frighteningly timely B-plot, allegations of harassment of a little girl with pigtails. Yes, really. Merry Christmas!
The second half of our double-header finds Charlie Brown ringing in the new year burdened with that albatross of a novel "War and Peace", which he is assigned to read and report on over winter break in HAPPY NEW YEAR, CHARLIE BROWN from 1985 (though it actually first aired on January 1, 1986). Tolstoy! Musical Chair Death Matches! The Little Red-Haired Girl! Shots of root beer garnished with dog germs!

EPISODE 19 has it all! Dinner AND a show!
Dinner is courtesy of the 1973 holiday classic A CHARLIE BROWN THANKSGIVING. Peppermint Patty invites herself, Marcie and Franklin to Chuck's house for Thanksgiving, forcing Charlie Brown to face his crippling fear of buttering toast. Snoopy gets his butt handed to him by a lawn chair. Woodstock engages in flagrant bird cannibalism. Ah, holidays!
The "show" part of the episode comes courtesy of the "MUSIC AND HEROES OF AMERICA" installment of the THIS IS AMERICA, CHARLIE BROWN series from 1989. Schroeder wants to give a report about America's musical history. Lucy wants to give a report about America's historical figures. Can they work together? Plus, who knew Charlie Brown could wail on the harmonica like that?
The "Peanuts by Schulz" short we watched this month was "Beware of the Dog"

Good Grief: The Attempted Murder at Peanuts Headquarters
The usual giddy joy at dropping a new episode of the podcast is dampened a bit this time with the news of the loss of Charles M. Schulz's home and Craig Schulz's home in the horrendous wildfires ravaging California. While the property (including much valuable Schulz memorabilia) was lost, thankfully, Jean Schulz was evacuated safely. Our hearts go out to the Schulzes and all of California.
But the show goes on. And it's a good one.
Episode 18 features my conversation with Andrew Farago, curator of the Cartoon Art Museum in San Francisco and the author of the new book THE COMPLETE PEANUTS FAMILY ALBUM: THE ULTIMATE GUIDE TO CHARLES M. SCHULZ'S CLASSIC CHARACTERS, which is out this month.
Because Halloween is upon us as well, we've also got a review of WHAT A NIGHTMARE, CHARLIE BROWN, a special from 1978 that turns out not to be so much spooky as, well....you'll have to listen to the show.
And, as always, we've got a "Peanuts by Schulz" short. This one is called "A Pretty Picture". And we check out another Random Strip of the Month. (Don't forget to email me your audio Random Strip submissions! Send those to charliebrownpodcast@gmail.com)

So, hey, remember at the end of the September episode I said the rundown for the October episode was subject to change? Well, it changed. Andrew Farago - author, comics historian, curator of the Cartoon Art Museum - agreed to chat with me about his upcoming book THE COMPLETE PEANUTS FAMILY ALBUM: THE ULTIMATE GUIDE TO CHARLES M. SCHULZ'S CLASSIC CHARACTERS. And I am thrilled to share that conversation with you in October.
But, good grief! What does that mean for THE SCHEDULE! Hold on to your security blanket and everything will be okay. We've still got WHAT A NIGHTMARE, CHARLIE BROWN, the Peanuts by Schulz short "A Pretty Picture" and, of course the Random Strip of the Month (get your submissions in right away!)
Don't feel bad for the next installment of THIS IS AMERICA, CHARLIE BROWN. It'll be here in November like the whipped cream on your pumpkin pie.
See you in October!
I demand absolute silence. I, the Great Podcastini, will now guess what number you are thinking of...
It's 17! As in episode 17 of the podcast! Now, pick a card! Do it!
Gazes magically at you while I wait
Is this your card? The queen of hearts! I knew it was because the little heart is bent. I learned that trick from Marcie. (You'll understand that once you listen to the episode.) Until then, just bask in my powers over the dark arts.
In IT'S MAGIC, CHARLIE BROWN, which first aired 4/28/81, Snoopy pulls off the impossible as The Great Houndini and makes the already figuratively invisible Chuck literally disappear. In another installment of THE CHARLIE BROWN & SNOOPY SHOW, first shown on 11/12/83, love Peanuts-style is bursting out all over. Also, Charlie Brown loses his ball field, Linus loses the directions to his would-be girlfriend's house and Marcie loses her mind.
Also, we've got a review of the "Peanuts by Schulz" short "The Call of the Wild". And there's another "Random of the Strip" submission!*
*If you'd like to send in an audio "random strip of the month", just record yourself talking about your favorite Peanuts strip or one you literally pick at random. If you can get it to me by the first week of the month, I can probably get it in that month's episode. If it's later, no worries, I'll hold it for next month.

As the train pulls away from the station, we jump on to run away with Snoopy as he joins the circus in the 10/24/80 LIFE IS A CIRCUS, CHARLIE BROWN. Forbidden passion! The lure of fame! Popcorn wantonly mingling with cotton candy! It's all here!

This month in episode 15 of the podcast we wade into the Peanuts neighborhood kiddie pool to take on the burning question: If a Peanuts character says "Rats" alone in the woods, does it make a sound? Also, we explore the mysteries of why Peppermint Patty is sneaking out in the early morning hours, why is crime so rampant in Peanuts Town, and where did Marcie get an automatic duck plucker?
The episodes this month are: She's a Good Skate, Charlie Brown, originally aired 2/25/80; episode 5 of "The Charlie Brown & Snoopy Show" from 10/22/83; and we check out another Peanuts by Schulz short, "Train Your Dog".

MAKE THIS PODCAST "GREAT" AGAIN
The painstaking production and scrutinizing the schedule that went into developing this theme for this month's episode, #14 for those of you keeping score at home, is staggering. Both episodes have "great" in their titles. From 1979, we've got "You're the Greatest, Charlie Brown" and from 1989, "This is America: The Great Inventors". That's what you call synchronicity.*
No, it's not.*
It's just a random coincidence.*

It's all about the eggs, y'all!
In the 1974 special IT'S THE EASTER BEAGLE, CHARLIE BROWN, the gang is obsessed with the looming specter of Easter and living in existential fear they won't be buried alive in an avalanche of eggs. Everyone, that is, except Linus who takes a break from obsessing about the Great Pumpkin to obsess about a thing called "the Easter Beagle". (And Sally calls him on it.) Meanwhile, Marcie, apparently an Easter neophyte, cluelessly lays waste to scores of defenseless eggs.
And as if THAT wasn't enough, we've also got our fourth episode of THE CHARLIE BROWN & SNOOPY SHOW, which aired originally on 10/1/83. All the familiar tropes are hit: Sally's crazy school reports; Charlie Brown kicking the football; Lucy is bossy and Linus suffers under her regime; Schroeder hates Lucy, but she doesn't care; Charlie Brown can't kick the football; Charlie Brown's baseball team is awful. Nothing really new here, but, hey, it's Peanuts! We had fun anyway, and even found a few really nice bits.

Darn it! I just lost the National Spelling Bee! AUGHHHHHHHH!
Well, at least I can empathize with Charlie Brown's trials and tribulations in his first big screen outing, A BOY NAMED CHARLIE BROWN, a box office hit in 1969. Charlie Brown has a shot at shedding his "failure face" when he wins the school spelling bee and heads off to the - gasp! - National Spelling Bee!
In the B plot, Linus is separated from his trusty blanket. It's not pretty.

Well, here it is. Episode 8 has dropped faster than Santa coming down your chimney.
For many, it's not Christmas until "A Charlie Brown Christmas" appears on their screens. Here at the podcast, we feel the same. We do a deep dive into the 1965 classic that almost didn't happen. Is the special more of a spectacle like a great, big, shiny aluminum Christmas tree, or is it more of an unassuming little twig of a tree that, with a little love, becomes a full, proud, symbol of the season?
The Peanuts shorts airing on Cartoon Network that we watched and reviewed this month were "Out of Order" and "Always Right".
Here's where you can find those 1960's Life Magazine photos of Schulz. At the time of recording, I overlooked the fact that this isn't actually a new offering. They were published a couple years ago. Sorry about that. Still fun to look at, though.

This month, we have a spooktacular treat for your trick-or-pod bag!
Our focus is the 1966 classic IT'S THE GREAT PUMPKIN CHARLIE BROWN and an episode of the 1983 series THE CHARLIE BROWN & SNOOPY SHOW. It's the Great Pumpkin's 50th anniversary. Good grief! Get yourself to the most sincere pumpkin patch you can find (take your pod-player with you, of course).

You might say HOME is the unifying theme, if you're inclined to look for one, in this month's Peanuts episodes. In IT'S A MYSTERY, CHARLIE BROWN, Woodstock has lost his home - someone stole his nest! - and in THIS IS AMERICA, CHARLIE BROWN: THE NASA SPACE STATION, the Peanuts gang is at home in the far-flung future of the mid-1990s aboard the brand new International Space Station, looking down upon Earth, home to us all. See how that all ties together?
Also this month, we take a look at "Brothers & Sisters" one of the Peanuts shorts produced in 2014 and currently running on Cartoon Network. We also talk about the unaired 1963 Charles Schulz documentary "A Boy Named Charlie Brown".

This month, we take a look at the 1971 Peanuts special "Play It Again, Charlie Brown" and another episode of the 1983 TV series "The Charlie Brown and Snoopy Show".
Beethoven in a spray can, blue security blankets that are actually GREEN(???), Schroeder living in a house with blood-red interior and being totally cool with it. What in the WORLD is going on with these episodes? Join us and we'll see if we can figure it all out.

This month, the podcast is all about teachable moments. In IT WAS A SHORT SUMMER, CHARLIE BROWN, Charlie Brown and the other boys dominate the girls at summer camp, because of course "boys are stronger" - well, they try anyway. In episode 2 of the short-run series THIS IS AMERICA, CHARLIE BROWN, "The Birth of the Constitution", Linus is our guide into the 1787 convention where the agreement that became the US Constitution was cobbled together. Also, Charlie Brown invents all the sports.

This month on the podcast, we go back to 1968 to talk about the 1968 prime-time special HE'S YOUR DOG, CHARLIE BROWN. This one is either a romp about a very naughty dog or a dark POW drama. You make the call.
After that, we look at the first episode of THE CHARLIE BROWN & SNOOPY SHOW, a Saturday-morning series from 1983. This one is...well, it's a also a thing that happened on TV.

NEXT MONTH: IT WAS A SHORT SUMMER, CHARLIE BROWN and "The Birth of the Constitution", an episode of the series THIS IS AMERICA, CHARLIE BROWN.
Welcome to episode one of a new, monthly podcast which really just amounts to an excuse for me to rewatch dozens of classic Peanuts specials and films. This month, we discuss "Charlie Brown's All-Stars", which was the 1966 follow-up to the instant classic "A Charlie Brown Christmas." Does it honor it's predecessor? Then, we watch episode 3 of the 1988 series "This is America, Charlie Brown" and learn things. In a cartoon! Madness!
My thanks to Henry Pope for the use of his "Linus & Lucy" Remix. You can find that and more of his music here.

One of my great childhood joys was the Peanuts comic strip. Charlie Brown and the gang were friends to me. I especially identified with Linus.
A great Saturday afternoon for me would be spent with a bowl of Cheetos and a collection of Peanuts strips. I especially liked the week-long story arcs and the brilliant mix of humor, frustration and perseverance of these lil' folks - though I am a little sad Shermie never took off as a main character.
Animated Peanuts was great too. The airing of a Peanuts TV special was a big event in my house. I was pretty young, but I remember seeing Race for Your Life, Charlie Brown in 1977 in a movie theater. And I know I watched A Boy Named Charlie Brown over and over on cable. I don't think a year has gone by that I haven't watched the Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas specials. I pretty much have the dialogue memorized, much to the chagrin of my wife and kids.
To date, Charlie Brown and the gang have appeared in five feature films, ten motion comics available on iTunes, eight episodes of "This is America, Charlie Brown" and eighteen episodes of the "The Charlie Brown and Snoopy Show", and some forty-five TV specials.
And, on this podcast, we're going to watch them all.
Every episode, usually about once per month, I'll talk about one or two specials or a feature film. What I like about it; what I didn't. What worked for me and what didn't. There are many layers to a Peanuts special. Even in two dimensions, these animated characters are fully fleshed-out humans - and a beagle - with all the fears, anxieties, joys and laughs we all experience. Let's explore those together.
And remember: Of all the Charlie Browns in the world, you're the Charlie Browniest.
