Oftentimes, we think of praying as if we’re writing letters to Santa Claus, where we ask for everything we want. But prayer is more than our Christmas list; it is an opportunity to focus on who God is and what He wants to do in our life and world.

Although we know about prayer, many of us struggle with how we should pray. Some of us think of prayer as a ritual that can make us feel disconnected from God. Some of us feel intimidated as we try to find the right words to pray. Like us, the disciples wanted to know how to pray. When they ask Jesus to teach them about prayer, He tells them to pray in an unexpected way.

10 years ago, we began an initiative in Ethiopia to work alongside indigenous leadership to plant churches and to bring holistic ministry to northern Ethiopia. From the beginning, our goal was to create self-sustaining ministries. And now, through God’s grace and the generosity of Chase Oakers, 135 churches have been planted, a school has been established with over 1,700 children enrolled, and three widow care centers have been developed that provide daily care for 170 widows. When someone we love faces some type of sickness, we start looking for answers and ways to help them get better. Depending on our background and beliefs, we might even look to God to heal our loved one. But healing can be a complicated topic. And sometimes, healing comes in a way that we least expect.

When we feel unsatisfied in our relationships or in our careers, we tend to start placing the blame on the people around us, creating conflict in our homes and workplaces. Most of us have been on the receiving end of negative words that affected our life in some way. Some of us faced bullying as a child, harsh words of criticism from our parents, or verbal abuse at the hand of our significant other that left us feeling insecure and insignificant. But most of us have also used words to hurt someone we love out of anger and frustration. Although we hear or read a lot of negative words in our lives, words should be used to encourage and to show love to others.

When we think about “the rich,” we think about people who have more money and possessions than we do. But if we are honest, most of us are considered wealthy by the world’s standards. Understanding these challenges can help us make better choices to allow us to find freedom in our finances and to make investments in something greater than ourselves.

Sex is an intimate act that affects our emotional and spiritual health.

Oftentimes, we avoid conflict because it can be difficult and scary. We see conflict as a sign of weakness in our relationships. However, we cannot avoid it, and it is not a sign of weakness. Conflict can actually be a good thing. Resolving conflict in a healthy way can help us build meaningful relationships that lead to healing and hope.

We learn to communicate at an early age. Small children communicate their feelings and needs to their parents. Parents respond to their children, and a special bond is created. The fear of going deep keeps us from forming deeper connections in our relationships.

Oftentimes, it feels like marriage is an expectation society has for each of us—as if marriage will make our lives complete. What happens when marriage doesn’t come quickly for us? But the Bible tells us to not focus on our marital status but to focus on God and what He has called us to do.

Oftentimes, our lives are so busy with our daily routines and commitments that we fail to see the great needs in our community. We fail to see the family next door, barely surviving, or the ex-convict wanting to turn his life around but can’t find the right opportunity. Or when we see a need, we feel we do not have the time or resources to take any action. In the parable of the Good Samaritan, Jesus reminds us to see people’s needs and to allow our compassion to move us into action.

Our culture can seem increasingly hostile towards Christianity, describing Christ-followers as judgmental and hypocritical. These words hurt and can lead to anger and confusion, leading many of us to retreat into our Christian circles. But the truth is God wants to use us to influence our culture. Technology makes our lives easier and more convenient. We can cook food at the push of a button, send work emails from anywhere, and connect with family and friends on social media. But technology can also distract us from the things that matter most. As we allow technology to dominate our attention and time, it can make our lives more difficult as our relationships suffer, our productivity decreases, and our spiritual health deteriorates.

Trying to find rest in a chaotic culture can seem nearly impossible. Our lives are full of endless to-do lists that are always calling us to complete the next task: responding to a work email, planning our meals for the week, or shuffling the kids from one activity to the next. When we finally find “downtime,” it becomes “catch-up” time. Although our tank is running on empty, we want to be productive, so we continue to check off our lists and move onto the next task. But does being busy all the time really make us more productive? How long can we live on empty?
