On a scorching July afternoon, a routine arrival home turns into a neighborhood nightmare. A father steps inside his air-conditioned house to play video games, leaving his sleeping toddler in the car under the assumption that the vehicle's cooling system is running. Hours later, emergency sirens pierce the quiet suburban cul-de-sac.

The call went out at roughly one forty in the morning on March sixteenth, 2018, and it pulled the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office toward a scene that the deputies who responded would not be able to put down easily afterward, because some scenes do not let go of the people who walk into them. What waited inside the house is among the worst this show has had occasion to describe

There is a village in the apple country of western New York called Sodus, up in Wayne County near the south shore of Lake Ontario, about thirty miles east of Rochester. This is fruit-belt land, orchard and muck field running back from the lake, roadside stands selling cider in the fall, the big cold lake holding the frost off the trees in spring. In October the orchards go heavy and the light comes in low and gold across the drumlins, the long humped hills the glaciers left behind. A few thousand people, one central school the whole area feeds into, the worst trouble in a given year usually a bad wreck out on Route 14. The kind of place where a double murder in a driveway on a sunny Monday afternoon does not just grieve people, it cracks the basic understanding they have about where they live.
On the twenty-second of October, 2018, a Monday, that understanding broke. It broke on a short residential street called Carlton Street, a block of modest houses near the Sodus Central School, the kind of street where people leave the doors unlocked and the kids ride bikes in the road. At a little after three in the afternoon, in full daylight, with neighbors home and children about, a young couple was shot to death in the driveway of their own home. By the time the first deputy arrived, the shooter was gone and the street had become a crime scene that the people who saw it would carry for the rest of their lives.

Aileen had been pawning items from her victims: tools missing from David Spears's truck, a camera that had belonged to Richard Mallory, other items linked to other victims. Florida law required pawnshops to take a thumbprint from anyone hocking goods, and the prints were on file.
Aileen, while filling out pawnshop intake forms, had been using the alias Cammie Marsh Greene. A signed pawn slip with a thumbprint, in the name of Cammie Marsh Greene, was sitting in a Daytona Beach pawn shop.

The wooded lot itself was mixed scrub of the sort that grows in the disturbed soil along an interstate corridor in central Florida. Pine. Palmetto. A few scrub oaks. Spanish moss hanging where the canopy thickened. The understory of vines and dead palm fronds that turns any walk off the shoulder into a careful one.
The lot was bordered on one side by the interstate, on another by a service road, and on the other two by more of the same scrub. It had the anonymity of land nobody owns in any way they bother to enforce. People dumped things in there. Refrigerators. Mattresses. The carpet remnant.
The men got closer to the carpet. The carpet was covering something.
Underneath was a body

The pregnancy at fourteen. The baby boy taken from her in March of 1971. Her grandmother Britta dying that July. Her grandfather throwing her out a few weeks later. The sleeping bag in the woods on the edge of Troy.

In 2011, a quiet neighborhood in Bakersfield, California, was shattered by a crime so severe it left veteran investigators shaken. The case began with the frantic search for a missing eight-year-old girl and ended in a tense, seven-hour SWAT standoff. Ray Coriell, the man at the center of the storm, faced a barrage of charges that exposed a harrowing betrayal of trust and a level of violence that seemed unimaginable.

A two-year-old boy was found dead in his crib in Clinton Township, Michigan, starved to death while his mother streamed on Twitch. Featuring real court audio from the sentencing, Obscura examines the 2023 case of Sierra Pearl Zaitona and Jonathon Matthew Cheek, two parents who let their child waste away in silence.
The boy had been in foster care before being returned to his biological parents, Sierra Pearl Zaitona and Jonathon Matthew Cheek, both of Clinton Township. According to court records, the child was healthy and thriving under state care. The decision to reunify the family would prove fatal. What happened after his return would become one of Macomb County's most disturbing neglect cases in recent memory.
On Thursday, March 16, 2023, Zaitona discovered her son dead in his crib and called 911. Cheek was not home at the time, instead visiting his own mother's residence. When first responders arrived at the Clinton Township home, they found the toddler beyond saving and living conditions that told a story of prolonged neglect. The Macomb County Medical Examiner conducted an autopsy and determined the cause of death was fatal starvation. A child who had once been healthy had slowly wasted away, unfed and unnoticed, while ordinary life carried on around him.
Zaitona had established a presence on Twitch as a livestreamer. While the Macomb County Prosecutor's Office did not draw a direct line between her streaming activity and the neglect, the case drew national attention on social media. The contrast between a screen glowing with followers and a crib growing silent became the defining image of this tragedy.
Both parents were arrested and charged with second-degree murder, a life felony, and second-degree child abuse, a ten-year felony. Bond was set at one million dollars cash for each defendant. The case moved through the Macomb County Circuit Court, with District Court Judge Jacob Femminineo Jr. binding both parents over for trial in March 2024.
Rather than face trial, both parents entered no contest pleas. On December 18, 2024, Jonathon Matthew Cheek, then 26, was sentenced to 24 to 50 years for second-degree murder and 86 months to 10 years for second-degree child abuse, served concurrently. On April 9, 2025, Sierra Pearl Zaitona, then 29, received the same sentence of 24 to 50 years for murder and 43 months to 10 years for child abuse. She was placed on Michigan's Central Registry for Child Abuse and Neglect.
Macomb County Prosecutor Peter Lucido spoke at sentencing. "When parents betray the sacred trust to nurture and protect," he said, "we must ensure that the scales of justice tip in favor of accountability." Neither parent will be eligible for release before 2047.
This episode features court audio from the sentencing hearings and examines the child welfare system decisions that preceded this tragedy. Listener discretion advised.

Leslie Preer was murdered in her Chevy Chase, Maryland home on May 2, 2001. For 23 years the case sat cold. This episode features court audio from the August 2025 sentencing and the genetic genealogy breakthrough that finally identified her killer.
Leslie Ann Jennings Preer, 48, was a wife, mother, and former University of Florida journalism student. Born in North Kingstown, Rhode Island in 1952 and raised across the country in a large military family, she settled in Chevy Chase in 1982 with her husband Sandy and their daughter Lauren. She volunteered at a local library teaching English to immigrants and newcomers. Friends and family remembered her as gentle, intelligent, and kind.
On the morning of May 2, 2001, Leslie did not show up for work. A welfare check at her home on Drummond Avenue revealed she had been beaten and strangled inside the house. There was no forced entry. Blood and skin cells from her attacker were recovered from the dining room, hallway, and near the kitchen. DNA under her fingernails told investigators exactly who did it. The problem was, he was not in any database. Suspicion fell on her husband, Sandy Preer. He was cleared, but the cloud of suspicion followed him for years. Sandy passed away in 2017 before he ever saw justice for his wife.
In 2022, Montgomery County investigators Tara Augustin and Alyson Dupouy reopened the file. They uploaded the crime scene DNA to a public genetic genealogy database. The search traced a distant relative in Romania, which narrowed the field until one name surfaced in old case notes. Lauren Preer's high school boyfriend, Eugene Gligor. For five years he had sat at the Preer family dinner table. He had shared their holidays, their game nights, their home on Drummond Avenue. In June 2024, investigators followed Gligor to Washington Dulles International Airport and retrieved a discarded water bottle. The DNA matched.
On June 18, 2024, federal marshals arrested Eugene Gligor at his apartment in Washington, D.C. In May 2025 he pleaded guilty to second-degree murder. On August 28, 2025, Montgomery County Circuit Court Judge David Lease sentenced him to 30 years with all but 22 years suspended, followed by five years of supervised probation. Prosecutors Donna Fenton and Jodie Mount handled the case. Gligor remains incarcerated at the Maryland Correctional Training Center. Sandy Preer was posthumously vindicated.
This episode features court audio from the 2025 sentencing hearing and archival case reporting. Listener discretion advised.

Two women strangled in two days by the same man in Jacksonville, Florida -- one killed at a motel on Christmas night, the other a beloved teacher murdered in her own home the next morning. This episode features real interrogation footage and court audio.
Leah Kline's life ended on December 25, 2019. She and Zebulon Perkins had been staying at a Westside Jacksonville motel when an argument turned violent. Perkins strangled Kline and disposed of her body in a dumpster behind the building. She was 38 years old. Her remains would not be discovered for days.
The following morning, December 26, Perkins drove to the Cedar Hills home of Vivian James, a 49-year-old chemistry teacher at Atlantic Coast High School. James had once been his teacher. According to court records, Perkins went to her looking for guidance -- and when James told him he needed to turn himself in to police, Perkins beat her and strangled her with a cord inside her home.
Vivian James had spent years in a classroom shaping the futures of Duval County students. Colleagues and former students described her as someone who gave her time and attention freely, a teacher who saw potential where others saw problems. The fact that a former student came to her door in crisis -- and that her instinct was to counsel him toward accountability -- speaks to who she was.
On December 28, a friend stopped by James' home and found her body. The friend called Jacksonville Sheriff's Office and reported James' car missing. Investigators located the vehicle at the same Westside motel where Kline had been killed. Perkins was inside. When officers searched the car, they found Perkins' bag containing sweatpants stained with James' DNA, along with her camera and three laptops. Two of James' televisions and her computer monitor were recovered from the home of Perkins' mother. DNA recovered from beneath James' fingernails matched Perkins.
In March 2024, Zebulon Perkins pleaded guilty to two counts of second-degree murder. He was sentenced to 70 years in Florida State Prison. The interrogation footage played during court proceedings showed detectives confronting Perkins about the evidence against him -- a man who, according to investigators, showed no emotion when asked about either death.
This episode features interrogation recordings and court audio. Listener discretion advised.

Abraham Shakespeare won thirty million dollars in the Florida Lottery. Three years later, he was dead -- shot twice, buried under concrete in Lakeland, Florida. This episode features real court recordings and interrogation audio.
Abraham Shakespeare, 43, was a truck driver's assistant from Lakeland, Florida, who lived simply and was known for his generosity. Friends described him as someone who would help anyone, even when he had little to give. On November 15, 2006, Shakespeare won a $30 million Florida Lotto jackpot, choosing a lump-sum payout of approximately $17 million. He purchased a million-dollar home in a gated community, bought cars for friends, paid off mortgages for relatives, and gave cash to nearly anyone who asked. Within two years, the majority of his fortune had been spent or given away. He told relatives he sometimes wished he had never won.
In late 2008, Dorice "Dee Dee" Moore approached Shakespeare, claiming she wanted to write a book about how people were taking advantage of him. Moore positioned herself as his financial protector. Within months, she had Shakespeare sign over his home, his remaining properties, and control of his bank accounts to companies she owned. By early April 2009, Moore controlled nearly everything. When Shakespeare began pressing her about where his money had gone, he vanished. His last confirmed sighting was in the first week of April 2009.
Moore launched an elaborate deception to cover his absence. She sent text messages from his phone, forged letters in his name, and paid a man to impersonate Shakespeare on a phone call to his own mother. She told police he had planned his own disappearance. When Shakespeare's family reported him missing in November 2009, investigators with the Polk County Sheriff's Office traced the financial records. Every explanation Moore offered contradicted the evidence. A controlled phone call arranged by detectives caught Moore pressuring an attorney to maintain lies about Shakespeare's whereabouts.
In January 2010, acting on evidence from an undercover operation, authorities discovered Shakespeare's body buried nine feet deep under a concrete slab at a property on Highway 60 in Plant City, Florida. He had been shot twice in the chest with a .38 caliber revolver. On December 10, 2012, a Hillsborough County jury convicted Dorice Moore of first-degree murder after three and a half hours of deliberation. The judge called her "cold, calculated, and cruel" and sentenced her to life in prison without parole.
This episode features court recordings and interrogation audio from the investigation into Abraham Shakespeare's murder. Listener discretion advised.

For nearly a decade, a predator stalked the quiet marshlands and sugarcane fields of southeastern Louisiana, leaving a trail of bodies in his wake. In this episode, we dive into the chilling case of Ronald Dominique, a man who confessed to the rape and murder of at least 23 men and boys between 1997 and 2006.Despite a victim count that rivals some of history's most notorious killers, Dominique's name is rarely mentioned alongside Bundy or Gacy. We explore the "perfect storm" of factors that allowed him to evade capture for so long—from his strategic targeting of marginalized men on society's fringes to the devastating chaos of Hurricane Katrina that overshadowed the investigation.

On a humid September day in 1997, a man walking his dog discovered the nude body of 26-year-old Tracy Habersham in a ditch near Fort Benning, Georgia. She had been strangled. What investigators couldn't know then was that her death marked the beginning of a six-year killing spree.
Part 1 of 2
VICTIM PROFILE:
Paul Durousseau's victims shared heartbreaking commonalities. They were young African American women—many of them mothers—struggling to build better lives. Tyresa Mack was raising three small children. Nikia Kilpatrick was six months pregnant when she died; her two young sons, aged 11 months and 2 years, were found alive but malnourished beside her body two days later. Shawanda McCalister was also pregnant. These women trusted the wrong person, and that trust cost them everything.
CASE SIGNIFICANCE:
Between 1997 and 2003, Durousseau used his various jobs—security guard, taxi driver—to identify and gain access to vulnerable women. His method was consistent: gain trust, enter their homes, bind them, sexually assault them, then strangle them with whatever cord was available. A phone cord. A coaxial cable. An extension cord tied in a distinctive military-style slipknot. His victims included Tracy Habersham, Tyresa Mack, Nicole Williams, Nikia Kilpatrick, Shawanda McCalister, Jovanna Jefferson, and Surita Cohen. German authorities also suspect him in additional unsolved murders near U.S. military bases during his Army deployment.

On February 24th, 2005, nine-year-old Jessica Lunsford vanished from her bedroom in Homosassa, Florida—taken through an unlocked door while her family slept. The girl who was afraid of the dark, who couldn't sleep without her stuffed purple dolphin, was about to become the center of one of the most heartbreaking cases in American true crime history.

The night she disappeared, she'd just returned from church, been tucked into bed by her grandmother, and fell asleep clutching her favorite toy. By morning, both Jessica and her dolphin were gone.
This case matters because it exposed critical failures in sex offender monitoring and directly resulted in Jessica's Law—legislation that now protects children across the United States with mandatory minimum sentences and lifetime electronic monitoring for predators.

Apopka, Florida. October 30, 1990. When 10-year-old Christine McGowan's stepfather entered her bedroom to wake her for school—he found her lifeless body face down in bed, the sheets beneath her soaked in blood. The door to their home stood slightly ajar. His white construction truck—keys left in the ignition the night before—had vanished.
Christine McGowan was a child who spent her afternoons watching her neighbor at The Lighthouse Mission halfway house craft decorative wooden boats. She stood in the autumn sun asking if she could watch him work, fascinated by his woodworking skill. She had no way of knowing that Elmer Leon Carroll—the seemingly harmless craftsman next door—was a twice-convicted child molester living under pastoral supervision. On the night of October 29, 1990, Carroll's schizophrenic delusions reached a breaking point. Witnesses at Lockhart Tavern watched him drink beer after beer, wrapping his jacket around a chair and holding long conversations with it about demons, devils, and the coming apocalypse. Hours later, he entered the McGowan home through an unlocked door.
This case exposes the catastrophic failures of Florida's 1990s halfway house system and sex offender monitoring. Carroll had served approximately two years and four months of a six-year sentence for child molestation, then served just over seven years for a second offense—both times released with minimal supervision directly into residential neighborhoods. The Lighthouse Mission placed a known predator with untreated severe mental illness next door to a family with a young daughter. The investigation moved swiftly—Carroll was apprehended within hours after stealing the family's truck—but the preventable nature of Christine's death haunted the community for years. Her case became a catalyst for examining how convicted sex offenders with documented psychiatric disorders were supervised after release.
This episode contains detailed discussion of child sexual assault, graphic autopsy testimony, and descriptions of fatal violence against a child. This content may be disturbing. Listener discretion is strongly advised.

In January 2025, Nguyen Dat, a 35-year-old Vietnamese man living in Ha Dong, voluntarily sought his own execution—fulfilling a years-long sexual obsession with decapitation. Through extreme pornography forums and dating apps, Nguyen publicly advertised his desire to be beheaded, eventually connecting with an unnamed butcher who shared his fatal fetish.
The killing occurred between January 25 and February 24, 2025, in a makeshift execution chamber. Graphic video footage—leaked to Vietnamese and Chinese Telegram groups—shows Nguyen's decapitation as he reached sexual climax. The butcher then dismembered his body with professional precision, documenting the process across 11 videos and 98 photographs. Evidence suggests the killer cannibalized Nguyen's remains, cooking parts of his body into Vietnamese dishes. When concerned citizens reported the leaked footage to authorities, they discovered Nguyen had been missing for five years.
This case represents only the third confirmed consensual homicide motivated by mutual sexual gratification—and the first where execution footage was publicly leaked. Obscura examines this disturbing intersection of extreme fetishism, voluntary death, and the dark corners of online subcultures where such transactions occur.

Listener, what happens when your home is destroyed in an accident and you lose everything? You have no home to go to, and are adrift without the people you love who you rely on to make difficult times easier to bear. You feel abandoned and alone. What happens if that ‘accident’ that destroyed your home and killed your loved ones wasn’t actually determined to be an accident at all, but something far more sinister, caused by the last person on earth you’d suspect?

Listener,
On a quiet May evening, a white stretch limousine glides across the San Mateo Bridge — nine women inside, celebrating a new chapter in life. But before the night can unfold, flames consume the vehicle, trapping five passengers inside as desperate 911 calls flood dispatch. What begins as confusion on the highway becomes a horrifying tragedy burned into California’s memory.
In this episode, Obscura host Justin Drown takes you inside the 911 recordings, witness statements, and the official investigation into one of the most haunting limousine fires in U.S. history. You’ll hear how a mechanical failure turned celebration into catastrophe — and how survival and guilt intertwine in the aftermath.
What really caused the fire? Could it have been prevented? And what happens to the people who walk away when others can’t?

In the conclusion of this two-part series, Obscura turns from the formative years of Kelsey A. to her final, devastating night.
On April 1st, 2025, calls began flooding into dispatch: a wrong-way driver on Interstate 275. Officers pursued a gray Ford Escape, ultimately forcing it to a stop. What unfolded in the following minutes was chaos, fear, and tragedy—ending with gunfire that would claim Kelsey’s life.
Part 2 captures the raw audio from the dash cams, radios, and body mics that recorded her final moments. Beyond the incident itself, we examine the aftershock: the grief of her family, the official investigation, and the long shadow of untreated mental illness that had haunted her for years.
This episode is not only about what happened on that highway—it’s about how a life shaped by hardship, resilience, and trauma reached its breaking point.
What You’ll Hear in This Episode* Emergency calls describing a wrong-way driver on I-275. * Police radio and dash cam audio from the pursuit and confrontation. * Kelsey’s final words, captured in tense exchanges with officers. * First-hand accounts of officers securing the scene and her dog. * News reports and witness perspectives on the officer-involved shooting. * The moment her family was notified and their reflections on her struggles. * Insights into the paranoia, fear, and mental health battles that consumed Kelsey in her final year.
Content WarningThis episode contains graphic audio of a police shooting, discussions of mental illness, and descriptions of death. Listener discretion is strongly advised.
Closing NotePart 2 closes the story of Kelsey’s life—a life marked by resilience and collapse, triumph and tragedy. Thank you for sitting with her story.

In this first part of a two-part series, Obscura takes you inside the complicated and often tragic life of Kelsey A., a young woman whose story weaves together resilience, trauma, and the weight of circumstance.
From her early struggles with brain surgery and a near-fatal car accident to her years in a bootcamp and boarding school, Kelsey’s life was shaped by events that altered her path in profound ways. Despite it all, she rose as a standout athlete—first on the basketball court, then in the MMA cage. But as the years went on, new battles emerged: psychiatric crises, brushes with the law, and the dark pull of choices made in desperation.
Part 1 is not the story of her final day—it is the story of how she got there. By tracing her journey, we see the psychological weight she carried and the brief moments of triumph that stood out against a backdrop of adversity.
This episode lays the foundation. Part 2 will plunge into the darker, more unsettling details of her final chapter.
What You’ll Hear in This Episode* Kelsey’s early life in Cincinnati and the medical ordeal that reshaped her childhood. * A devastating car accident that left lasting physical and psychological scars. * Her removal from home and placement into a North Carolina bootcamp, followed by Montana Academy. * Near-death experiences, including her survival after collapsing in the snow during an escape attempt. * The drive and talent that turned her into a star basketball player and later an MMA fighter. * Glimpses of her later years: psychiatric struggles, brushes with law enforcement, and choices that complicated her legacy. * A reflection on how chance, trauma, and resilience shaped the person Kelsey became.
Content WarningThis episode contains discussions of brain trauma, psychiatric crises, sex work, and law enforcement encounters. Listener discretion is advised.
Closing NotePart 1 sets the stage. Part 2 will take you deeper into the grittier, unsettling details that define Kelsey’s final years. Free listeners will get Part 2 next week; patrons can listen early.

In December 1984, a man walked into a karate dojo in Dumfries, Virginia. Minutes later, he was dragged out the back door, leaving a trail of blood in his wake. Decades later, the grainy footage of his brutal beating would reemerge on YouTube, igniting a firestorm of outrage, speculation—and questions that remain unanswered to this day.
In this Black Label episode of Obscura, Justin Drown unpacks the haunting story behind what came to be known as the "Kung Fu Guy Incident." At the center is Bobby Joe Blythe—a self-styled sensei with a history of violent stunts and a doctrine that turned martial arts into a license for cruelty. What happened inside that dojo wasn't a demonstration. It was an orchestrated attack on a mentally ill man, all filmed, narrated, and later uploaded by the very man who allowed it to happen.
This is not a tale of ancient discipline or honor. It's the story of power abused, a life discarded, and a justice system left paralyzed by the absence of a name. No arrest. No trial. No confirmed identity for the victim—only the echo of his last words and the sound of boots on concrete.
Listener discretion is strongly advised. The audio in this episode is graphic. The subject matter is disturbing. But the story must be told.

Anchorage wakes to the knock that ends the hunt: October 27, 1983, troopers arrive at Hansen’s bakery, and an interrogation room papered with maps and faces waits for him. Search warrants turn his life inside out—an aerial map etched with 24 Xs, hidden firearms, and jewelry that speaks for the dead. Ballistics tell the rest: shell casings match the Ruger Mini-14, and those Xs resolve into graves in the wild.
From a 12-hour confession to a grim helicopter tour that yields new remains—including the victim dubbed “Horseshoe Harriet”—Obscura threads meticulous police work with the voices too long ignored. The gavel falls—461 years plus life—and the cold Alaskan air still carries the names of the missing.

Anchorage’s pipeline boom promised prosperity, but under the neon and snow, someone was hunting. In this episode, we revisit the disappearances of young women—Megan Emerick, Mary Phil, Roxanne Eastland, and more—whose lives were too easily dismissed as the city looked the other way. Through survivor testimony, including Cindy Paulson’s harrowing escape, we chart the failures that let a predator thrive and the dogged investigators who refused to let the case go cold. Forensic breakthroughs and psychological profiling peel back the mask of Robert Hansen, the “Butcher Baker,” revealing calculation where others saw banality. Obscura’s trademark approach—unflinching, empathetic, and meticulously sourced—honors the victims while mapping the long, frozen road to justice.

Anchorage during the oil boom promised quick money and fresh starts—but the wilderness kept its own secrets. In this episode, we trace the disappearances of young women drawn north by opportunity, and the investigators who fought isolation, scarce resources, and a chilling pattern surfacing in the tundra. At the center stands Robert Hansen, the seemingly ordinary baker whose long shadow fell over a city in rapid transformation. Through survivor voices, case files, and methodical police work, we reconstruct how the truth closed in—without losing sight of the lives behind the headlines. Dark, patient, and unflinching, this is Obscura at its most atmospheric.

Not long after 9 PM on that Sunday night, in the sleepy new-build development of Dragon Rise, the back door security light of Jennifer and Stephen Chapple’s home flicked on. Their two boys aged 5 and 6 years old had been put to bed hours before and were sleeping soundly upstairs.
36-year-old Stephen was a well-loved IT teacher at West Somerset College. It was a secondary school in Minehead in Somerset, 23 miles away from his home in Dragon Rise. His wife 33-year-old Jennifer worked as a Customer Service Advisor at the coffee shop of the popular Otter Garden Centre in Norton Fitzwarren. At that time on a Sunday night, they were probably thinking about preparing for bed themselves. They had no idea what was about to explode into their home.

Since the late 90s Khan Tusion has held the crown as the boogie man of the adult industry. He showed up in 1999 and immediately made a stamp as being particularly cruel. It was the dot com boom and adult websites were created in the thousands. Khan specialized in pushing limits and avoiding consent. Women showed up to shoots only to leave crying and traumatized. Khan Tusion would punch, kick, slap, and strangle.

Listener, today's story is a study in consequences—the kind that sneak up on you in the silence after a mistake. We begin with a personal tale: a moment of breaking, a walk into the night, and the cold realization of what it costs to leave something behind. But it’s in the second half where things truly darken. In Vancouver, Washington, CDL driver Mark Fogel crashes his vehicle after drinking and spirals into a mental and emotional freefall that ends in bloodshed. A simple DUI becomes a fatal standoff, and a man already undone by guilt crosses a line that can’t be uncrossed.
Listener, not every tragic end comes with intent—but some do. And this one… it’s hard to forget.

A property manager spots two teens entering the Park De Ville Apartments. This area of Houston is considered particularly dangerous. It has a crime safety score of F. The stretch of road includes a payday loan business, a run-down self-serve car wash, and you can see the garbage strewn sidewalks from google maps. The Property manager calls 911 to report the break in and Officers are dispatched.

In this episode of Obscura, we examine the tense chain of events that began with a routine traffic stop and ended with a fatal confrontation. On May 12, 2020, 37-year-old Gregory M. Howe, already on law enforcement’s radar following a concealed firearm charge earlier that month, was pulled over for a seatbelt violation. A sudden attempt to flee kicked off a high-speed chase through Daytona Beach, Orange City, and Deltona, ultimately ending in Howe’s driveway. There, he leveled a multi-colored shotgun at a detective and fired, prompting several officers to return fire. Howe was struck multiple times—around 28 by some reports—and pronounced dead at the scene, leaving behind lingering questions and a sobering reminder of how a single traffic stop can escalate into tragedy.

Listener, I want to warn you that this episode gets really, really disgusting at certain points. But not quite dark enough to be Black Label. When I research for an episode, I like to follow information to its natural conclusions. Sometimes this can take you to some disturbing places. Understand that going into this episode. Things are going to get pretty gross at points. You’ve been warned.

On December 17, 2015, around 4:00 am, firefighters responded to a house fire on Sumac Street in Moncton, New Brunswick, Canada. Once there, they found the body of a man in the house and contacted police. These charred remains. So damaged from burns and stab wounds. The victim's mother would run screaming from a courtroom at the first site of the autopsy photos three years later.

Barbie Poplin and her boyfriend, Donald Passmore, are at the home on North Airline Road and everything is going well between them. As the evening carries on, Donald drank at least two half pints of Captain Morgan liquor and ginger ale. Donald is depressed. He’s been dealing with mental health issues after his mother recently died. Since then, he’s been struggling with drugs and alcohol

Brian Cohee Jr. tells his family doctor that he’s experiencing headaches. He doesn’t tell the doctor about the lights that dance around his bedroom, just from the corner of his eyes. Or that sometimes, when his back is turned, bright light shines through his bedroom window. Impossible because, when he turns around, there is no car or man with shining flashlight.

In today’s episode we’re going to cover the inner workings of a troubled mind. This episode is a prelude to an episode that will be full to the brim with source audio that includes 911 calls, body cam footage, and interrogation audio.
And, though I will use some source audio here, the content you hear today will be quoted directly from our killer. Much of what I read today will be directly from posts he made to the internet before committing a horrific crime.
For this episode I’m going to leave the killer's name out of it. That won't matter until part two. Though I will sprinkle some source audio throughout the episode for flavor. For now we focus on the turbulent mind of someone on a downward spiral to evil.

Robert Salvador and Michael King head to target practice at a local firing range. Upon arriving at the range, King removes a nine-millimeter handgun from under the passenger seat of his Camaro. Salvador and King stay at the range for approximately one hour.
When King and Salvador part ways for the day, Salvador has a feeling in his gut. Something is wrong with the Michael King. Something felt off. Over the course of the next eight to nine hours Michael King would prove how horribly correct Salvador’s instincts were.

At the time it was called The Crime of the Century, with a trial the likes the world had never seen. A full-blown media spectacle. And the victim caught up in a senseless scheme.

In part one you were introduced to our flea-bitten Romeo and Juliet, Amanda and Jerad Miller. Jerad, unwashed and dressed in flea market chic, told you all about his beliefs about the New World Order.
Amanda made a post on Facebook on how she daydreamed about the end of the world. How she wanted to kill the unbelievers with a shotgun when that day came.
Today, we bring everything home. Let's explore their violent end.

Peter Sotos is potentially the single most controversial figure in True Crime. A godfather of the genre, he pushed the boundaries in ways that made even yours truly uncomfortable.
This is a collaborative project put together with fellow True Crime creator T.Z. Borden. He's the host and creator of the excellent Tapes from the Darkside podcast. A podcast that takes you down the darkest roads the genre has on offer. When he asked me to collaborate on this project I couldn’t resist.
Borden aptly titled the episode Modern De Sade. What you’re going to hear is an expertly edited episode, crafted by Mr. Borden, which runs for 90 mins. Much of the episode features a conversation between me and TZ.

Officer Miles Bennett was dispatched to a disturbance at a residence on the 500 block of Jefferson Street in the City of Oshkosh, Wisconsin. The call was originally dispatched as "sister freaked out and boyfriend is bleeding. Possibly stabbed in arms." What the officer found was equally horrifying and mysterious.

The following episode has several twists and turns. I ask that you hold on tight and not look into the case. You’ll have a better time if you do so. A lot of thought is put into Obscura in terms of keeping coverage objective. With that said the opening part of this episode is sourced directly from the Innocence project of Florida as well as court records. With several sections read verbatim. Alright… let’s get on with it.

On Mar 28, 2024, in Everett, Washington, at around 7:00 AM, four-year-old Ariel Garcia was declared missing. The boy is Hispanic with brown hair and brown eyes. He is 3 feet, 1 inch tall and weighs 37 pounds. Ariel went missing at an apartment on Vesper Drive.
Ariel’s mother, Janet Garcia, struggles with drug and alcohol. To the point that it made her leave for days. And frequently without notice. Her grandmother described her daughter as being both violent and unpredictable.

Heather Claypool is sleeping. It’s early morning hours. A small creak stirs her. Between squinted eyes she scans the side of her bed. It was probably someone downstairs. She lived in an apartment. Heather drifts back to sleep. Another creak. She sits up. There is a man crouched at the end of your bed.

Around 10 p.m. on January 30, 1993, Lynette Tschida went to the Winn Dixie store in Eustis, Florida. It was at the Grove Square Shopping Center in Lake County. She saw a young man and a teenage boy sitting on a bench near the entrance of the store.
As she walked in the store, she noticed how intense the older one was. He was tall, muscular. His smooth, but dark skin and handsome features betrayed by a scowl. He watched Lynette enter the store and she felt his eyes on her back as the automatic doors slid shut.

Nine year old Brisenia is sleeping in the living room of her home. She’s not sleeping in her bedroom because she’s so excited that she got a new puppy. At that age these experiences are so magical for us.
Her mother told her that her bed was freshly made with clean sheets. If Bresenia wanted to sleep with the puppy, then it needed to be in the living room. It was an easy choice. Raul Flores and Gina Marie Gonzalez, his wife, are sleeping in their bed.
It’s 1AM in the morning when someone knocks on their door.

Leonard “Patrick” Gonzales Jr., age 35, is broke. He’s desperate for cash. So desperate that his mom is paying his bills. Patrick, of course, finds this embarrassing. Against his wife Tabitha’s better judgment, he invested their savings into a Karate School. Savings that the two saved up together working at Long-Wiggins’ antique business.
But the Karate business, like 40 percent of businesses in the United States, went belly up. And that little venture has placed Patrick (and by extension Tabitha) in financial jeopardy. Patrick felt like he was letting his family down. Both his wife and his children. But he had an idea. His ticket out of this whole mess was 66-year-old Byrd "Bud" Starling Billings

Katherina “Katie” Allen is afraid of her husband. On Easter Sunday, the 42 year old woman packed her things and took the kids with her. The man she married, Kevin Allen, age 51, has a history of violence. A 20 year long rap sheet. Filled with domestic abuse and death threats against the four women he married in his life.
Katie was going to play it cool. She’d meet Kevin at Cracker Barrel for their daughter Kerri Allen’s birthday party. There, in a public space, she would tell her husband that she wanted a divorce. And if Kevin became violent there would be witnesses. Things don't go to plan.

Listener, rummaging through these old, discarded newspapers, it paints a picture for me. The image is of a community left in a state of terror. In which a man stretched his arm, and the people of Okaloosa recoiled. And this man, this monster was acting fast. But what he didn’t know is that investigators were on his tail. Closer than he realized.
Dr. Edmun Kielman and Chief Investigator Don Vinson were working in tandem. They had prints. They had DNA. Artists sketches. Eye witness reports. Investigator Don Vinson just needed to get there when the body was still hot. No decomposing corpse. Or someone discarded on the beach.

In an episode that spans decades I take a look at serial killer James Delano Winkles. His victims, the headlines of the day, and the disturbing court documents shine a spotlight on this relatively obscure case. This one gets vile at times.
Unfurling this spider's nest reveals a black pitch shadow cast by James Winkles over Pinellas County. Any woman left alone in his stomping ground lived in a quiet sort of danger. A starless and moonless night where the daughters of the working class vanished.

Nine-year-old Samuel James “Jimmy” Ryce is getting dropped off from his school bus at approximately 3:07 p.m. at a bus stop near his home in
the Redlands, a rural area of south Miami-Dade County. Jimmy is walking on the left side of the road. He has a short distance before he gets home.
Chavez spots Jimmy. His mind is all flashing images of prepubescent boys playing in water. But this boy is alone. And no one is around. Chavez turns the Ford Pickup around. He stops right in front of Jimmy’s path. The nose of the truck facing the nine-year-old.

She looks happy, and frankly, beautiful. She was celebrating a joyous occasion. Bringing a daughter into the world to light up her life. Give her meaning. Within a few months she would be stabbed 46 times. And allegedly by the loving son in her picture.

The fastest way up to the top of Mount Toubkal is a two day route. The two day route is a “simple up and down via the same trail from Imlil”. On the first day, you travel to Imlil). Once in Imlil, you take a four hour walk up the mountain to the refuge, and spend the night either in a tent or dorm. On the second day, you walk from the refuge to the summit. After spending time at the summit, you trek back down the mountain, all the way back to Imlil. There are many different routes you can take to get to the top of Mount Toubkal - this is just one example.
December 17, 2018
Imlil, Morocco
It’s early in the morning; two French hikers are on a “small hike” when they come “up on a plateau” about an hour into the hike. The hikers discover the bodies of Louisa and Maren on Mount Toubkal, around six miles from the center of Imlil.
That’s when they saw an open tent, and two “broken” girls outside of the tent.

Listener, this is part one of a two-part series on the many crimes of science fiction authors. Let’s not sugar coat it. The sexual abuse of children committed by science fiction authors. We’re going to talk about the Science Fiction Writers of America. How I feel that they’re hypocrites. How the image the SFWA has cultivated doesn’t gel with the facts. Monstrous people that have been given the prestigious title of Grand Master and never denounced for their evil.

Dr. Ewan Cameron’s embodied the title of a mad scientist in ways few ever could. When learning of his practices, Ewan Cameron exhibits an unmistakable sadism that seems to eclipse even that of Sidney Gottlieb. Throughout his experiments, Cameron delivered massive quantities of drugs to unwitting patients under the guise that he was curing them of ailments such as postpartum depression or anxiety. These patients would come to Dr. Cameron for help, entrusting him to deliver the best care possible, and instead, they were subjected to nothing short of torture.

In 1953, a heinous crime was committed. At that time, it was new, potentially relevant information, when Harold Blauer’s doctor gave him a massive drug injection, killing him by way of an overdose. The news, however, didn’t report it until more than twenty years later. In this case news outlets reported on a story twenty years after the fact because the CIA had been covering it up.

In the digital age, monitoring the online content that our children are accessing and consuming adds a further layer of complexity. Most parents do their best to educate their kids and maintain open communication about the pitfalls of the online world and how to deal with it. But kids are tech savvy, naturally curious, and often defiant. Prior to the advent of social media, some degree of comfort and protection existed for kids who were being bullied, by being able to walk outside the school gate or step off the bus at the end of the day. For those children and teens who had a stable and loving home life, this could offer some respite from the jeers, cruel practical jokes and public humiliation dished out by their peers.
Nowadays, the rise of numerous social media platforms means there is no escape and no reprieve from bullying. It’s now as easy as the click of a button for bullies to launch and maintain relentless hate campaigns that make their targets feel unsafe in every aspect of their lives. Thankfully, many schools today have ‘zero tolerance’ anti-bullying policies. Encouraging regular conversations with our kids about inclusivity, respect and kindness also helps them to speak up early on when they recognize bullying behavior. But sometimes, even the best of intentions can’t prevent the unthinkable from happening.

Emotions lie deep within each of us. Hidden from outside view yet powerful and busy activations that twist and turn inside ourselves. They drive our behaviors and our choices.
We aren’t always honest about what we truly feel because we are unsure and unwilling to evoke unknown reactions from those around us. An internal pressure cooker can result. Boiling with more ferocity as time uncontrollably creeps forward. Either that dangerous steam is released healthily or it explodes pushing decisions that are devastatingly final and entirely irreversible.
Listener, the story you are about to hear is tragic and horrifying. Not everything is as it seems. The kind of individual who could carry out this crime is not one you want walking the streets. A person who is willing to do the unthinkable to protect their reputation. A complete lack of responsibility and unwillingness to face consequences leads to a shocking and brutal decision. It was a dark and devilish plan that failed miserably.

Confidence and self-belief can be beautiful powerful emotions enabling a positive life and a balanced way of living. They can be and should be used for good. But when accompanied by selfishness and egotistical arrogance, hand-in-hand in an unhealthy chain, they create a cesspit of danger. Darkness can find a way in, burrowing into its core.
In Texas, in 2015 a chance meeting and a single conversation turned into frightful violence in less than twelve hours. Like a pack of wolves in silent premonition, individuals intertwined and crept through the night with no forewarning to their unsuspecting target. It was their calculated decision to pick up a life and forcibly remove it taking away their future and their children’s chance of knowing them. It was a cold and heartless act that devastated lives.

From the same team that brings you Obscura - introducing our podcast Hometown History.
Since 2016, Shane has been traveling to hometowns across America in search of forgotten history. Sure, these places may not be your hometown, but they are someone's and that is what makes them important. Shane travels to these places of forgotten historical significance and shares these stories with you.
We all love hearing the unknown stories of the places we visit when planning a trip - like the Redwoods National Park, Grand Canyon National Park, or Sun Studio. But what about Parker's Cross Roads, Tennessee? Or the Island in Michigan where the only American King ruled? But if you also enjoy traveling vicariously then this is also a podcast for you.
Find Hometown History wherever you get your podcasts: https://link.chtbl.com/hometownhistory
The most dangerous person of all is one with a twisted inner mind who blends into society without being noticed. Quietly watching and planning. Considering their options while participating in normal family life as if all was well. These are the people who pose the most threat. They are the ones who rear up, violent and sudden with no warning and no precursor.
Defense against these attacks is almost always futile. What is left behind is a façade of innocence banking on previous good character and unimposing life to protect them and cover their hideous actions. Lives are taken and they are destroyed, and the perpetrator walks on. Unaffected, uncaring, and entirely self-serving. These are the people whom we should fear the most.
Two lives were snatched away in July 2021 and two people who had never hurt a soul had their dignity stripped from them. The details of this case are harrowing and deeply disturbing. At the centre is a young man who has devastated lives with his senseless actions. A young man who possesses a character that is loathsome and dangerous. Listener, the tragic case of the Halderson’s is one you will never be able to forget.
Warning: Violence, Dismemberment

The lies people tell can lead to devastating consequences. When they become too big, they get cumbersome, heavy, and hard to maintain. More lies are needed on top. Layer after layer. A complex spider’s web emerges that requires detail to be remembered. It needs the connections, and the paths of each thread traced and tracked in some way. It’s a web woven to deceive through the creation of a false reality.
In 2021 the world was starting to right itself after a turbulent year due to Covid-19. For one family the events that were to follow are unthinkable, encasing the true meaning of brutality, disrespect, and betrayal. When evil this dark rises it does so from nowhere. It comes unexpected and unprecedented leaving lifelong irreparable damage in its wake.

When I created Black Label, it was a response to the backlash I received after covering Nick Stoutzenberger. Or Nick Bate as he’s known online. Angry blog posts and emails were written. Twitter was pissed. I realized that I needed a buffer for the darker content. And Black Label has served that purpose well. Going back to the original episode and hear it after all of these years has been a trip. Though I’m not happy with the quality of the production.
Today we return to the case that laid the groundwork. The beginning before the beginning. The prequel. We return and we cement the case into the dark halls of Black Label. Now. I’m not going to waste your time any longer. Listener, I hope you enjoy this production of Black Label Episode 0. Nick Stoutzenberger: Into the Mouth of Madness.

On the afternoon of Sunday, November 21, 2021, the beautiful town of Taunton in Somerset, northwest England held its annual Christmas lights switch on. Families arrived in the town center with their young children to watch as the bright festive lights came to life lighting up the buildings around them. It’s a tradition many families enjoy together each year.
But that day marked the end of family life for two families in 2021. In a small village called Norton Fitzwarren just outside Taunton, a haze of extreme explosive violence would result in two people losing their lives, young children left orphaned and one man facing a criminal trial for double murder.

Nothing will set anger alight more intensely than betrayal. Once this fire starts to burn, for certain people, there’s only one way to dampen it down and extinguish the flames. Love is an emotion that is presumed to last forever. An invisible bond between two people that is cherished, nurtured, and protected. It is the fairy-tale dream. The concept of it being transferable, changeable, and decidedly unflinching in doing so is never considered until it becomes confrontational and impossible to ignore.
In 2018 a quiet rural farm in Earlville, Iowa became a scene of horror in a matter of seconds. That frosty November morning was the accumulation of months of discontent, hidden fears, and quiet planning in a marriage that was deeply scarred.
Love, betrayal, revenge, and self-preservation are the undercurrents of this case. Building in intensity they weaved together like hissing snakes seeking their final destination and most anticipated meal. Cold-blooded and determined they were the driver of one man’s actions that can never be reversed, and nothing would stand in their way.

British man Neil Entwistle was once an intelligent university graduate with IT qualifications that could have taken him far in life. At 27-years old, he was a husband and a father on the first joyous steps to a new family life. Now he had little stimulation and little to look at day after day in the tiny space he could barely call his own. It was a world away from his expensive family rental in the suburbs of Hopkinton, Massachusetts.
The grey concrete floor was in stark contrast to the chipped, rusting, and blue painted metal gate that boxed in his grim cell. He was an inmate at Middlesex County Jail in Cambridge, an ugly grey high-rise building regular inmates called ‘the slammer in the sky’. On the right, there was a metal bed firmly attached to the wall with a thin mattress thrown on top. On the left less than 2 feet away was a toilet and small washbasin also both screwed into the concrete wall.
Entwistle had been charged with the brutal murder of his 27-year-old wife Rachel and his 9-month-old baby Lillian. Both had died from gunshot wounds. Both shots were fired at close range. Their killer stood over them, arm outstretched, finger on the trigger, and took their lives in a matter of seconds. The bleak concrete cell had been his home since his arrest weeks after the murders in January 2006. Now it was 2008 and his trial for the cold-blooded murder of his family was about to begin.

We all have secrets. Internal thoughts we keep to ourselves. Actions and behaviours we carry out in private that no one else knows about. Part of those internal personal thoughts are fantasies, dreams, and desires that we don’t always share. But when those work together, when they have a dark undercurrent and come tumbling out of the mind and into real-life, the outcome is never a good one.
In January 2006, the town of Hopkinton in Massachusetts became the scene of a heart-breaking and shocking tragedy that sparked attention in both America and the UK. In a small quiet family orientated cul-de-sac just under five miles from the town center, a young family had just begun their new lives in Massachusetts with their 9-month-old baby Lily. Within weeks, two family members would be dead and the other nowhere to be found. Secrets and lies, even those kept within the depths of darkness and firmly behind the mask of normality have a way of spilling out in the end. And when they do, it changes everything.

In the Spring of 2016, the small town of Spalding in Lincolnshire, England found itself in the spotlight of media attention. For all the wrong reasons. Lives had been brutally snatched away in the dead of night within the setting that we all should have the right to feel safe in, our home.
Asleep and peaceful, two innocent lives did not know the danger around them. They had no way of knowing what was coming for them that night. The minds behind these vile crimes were hidden behind childish faces and unassuming ages. They showed twisted depravity embedded in their psyches where selfish desire and an undercurrent of misplaced resentment fuelled two brutal cold-blooded murders. And they were the last two people anyone would suspect.

If you’ve ever been in a printing plant, you know how loud they tend be. The rhythmic banging and clicking of the presses combined with the purr of constant, high decibel white noise is surprisingly soothing once you get used to it.
But on the morning of September 14, 1989, something about this familiar cacophony was suddenly off in a large facility in Louisville, Kentucky. It was too loud, and too erratic. Too sharp for the steady hum of the machines. And then…screaming. Because it wasn’t the machines – it was gunfire. And by the time silence descended on the Standard Gravure printing plant a half hour later, at roughly 9:00 AM, 12 people were wounded and 8 were dead.
The identity of the killer was never in question – he put an SIG Sauer, a 9mm pistol, under his chin and died at the scene.
The focus of the investigation was rather on a potential accomplice of this mass murderer, which you are likely already familiar with. You may know it by its street names, like “happy pills” or “bottled sunshine”; or you may know it more formally, as the popular anti-depressant Prozac.

New York City in the 1980s was not the place we know it to be today, especially when it comes to violent crime. Almost no neighborhood was without risks, and no one was off limits. With millions of people living and working in such a confined space, commuting to and around Manhattan via the dirty, dangerous and heavily graffitied subway system was the only choice available to 3.3 million residents who relied on the subway every day. These days on the subway, transit officers have a reassuring presence. They ensure things are running smoothly and that any disturbances are dealt with swiftly. But in the 1980s, the city couldn’t afford to employ such security. Many citizens resented feeling scared, but there was little else they could do. The NYPD already had their work cut out for them in terms of responding to an overwhelming amount of daily emergency calls about violent assaults and murders. But it wouldn’t be long before widespread discontent about the amount of violent street crime in the Big Apple was about to be exposed in the most brutal and racially charged of circumstances. In 1984, four young African American men - and their white assailant, Bernhard Goetz - were unwittingly about to be the public faces of the wild west that many New Yorkers felt their city had become.

The 21st October 1966 dawned misty and grey in the Welsh mining town of Aberfan, with fog blanketing the village. The 240 students of Pantglas Junior School were looking forward to their half term break. At an assembly later that morning, they would sing the hymn ‘All Things Bright and Beautiful’ for their teachers before school would be dismissed at midday. Ahead of them was a week off. The children were looking forward to getting outside for hours of playtime with their friends. That morning, 8-year-old Pantglas student Jeff Edwards walked to school with his best friend Robert Jones. When the boys arrived, they hung up their coats and took their seats in the classroom. It was a perfectly ordinary, drizzly autumn day, with everyone in the village going about their business. But what no one in Aberfan, Wales, or even the rest of Britain could anticipate, was that in less than an hour, the lives of the town’s residents would be changed forever in the most tragic - and some would later say entirely foreseeable - of circumstances.

In the case of Craig Price, otherwise known as the Warwick Slasher, there was every indication he was a wolf in sheep’s clothing. His inherent charisma effectively deceived those closest to him. Little did they know he would go down in history as being Rhode Island’s most notorious serial killer. At the same time, his case would serve as a major catalyst for widespread reform.

On the October long weekend of 1997, 14-year-old Lauren Barry and 16-year-old Nichole Collins were enjoying a camping trip with some friends at a popular bush spot just outside Tathra, on the far south south coast of NSW. At the campsite there was relatively constant adult supervision, with parents checking in at regular intervals to ensure everyone was safe and well. As the Sunday night wore on, Nichole became contemplative about her recent relationship breakup. She knew her ex was at a party at a house a few kilometres away, and wanted to walk over to talk to him about getting back together. But by this time it was dark, and not necessarily safe to go walking through the bush alone given the risk of misadventure. If Nichole fell and injured herself, there’d be no way of calling for help, and these were the days before every teenager had a mobile phone. Nichole and Lauren decided to walk to the party together, and at 9pm they set off. It wasn’t unusual for teens in the area to walk to where they wanted to get to. It was a relatively safe community, and after all, Lauren and Nichole were extremely familiar with their surroundings. Learning the necessary precautions and steps to take should they ever find themselves in trouble was an important part of growing up in the country. But sometimes, the perils of the outdoors don’t manifest themselves in the unpredictability of mother nature. Sometimes, it’s something much more sinister and infinitely more horrifying...

On 1 November 2006, Kerry Nicol was worried. She hadn’t heard from her 19-year-old daughter Tania since she’d left their house just 2 nights earlier. The family lived on the outskirts of Ipswich, the biggest town in the county of Suffolk, in the East Anglia region of southeast England. The fact Tania hadn’t been in contact gave Kerry further cause to be concerned. She’d known for some time that Tania was an injecting drug user, and at one stage had even found syringes in her bedroom. Tania had sought help for her drug dependency, but the pull of addiction was strong. Tania soon found that sex work paid the money she needed to fund her habit, and she joined the group of around 30 to 40 street sex workers who worked the red-light district of Ipswich.
Sometimes Tania stayed out with friends and didn’t come home until the next day. Which was why Kerry was so troubled when Tania didn’t return home or call like she usually did. Kerry reported her missing daughter to the police. There were conflicting reports that Tania was last seen around 12.30am on 31 October in Burlington Road, and also outside a petrol station. Either way, she’d last been spotted in the red-light district, but hadn’t been seen again. Sadly, in the coming months, Kerry wouldn’t be the only mother in the area to never see her daughter again. A man named Steve Wright saw to that.

(Part 2) In January 2015, Martin and Teresa Van Breda were enjoying having their oldest son, 22 year old Rudi home from university in Australia. The family’s other two children, 20 year old Henri and 16 year old Marli, also lived with their parents in the town of Stellenbosch in the south west of South Africa. Marli was nearing the end of her high school education. Like Rudi, Henri had also been studying in Australia, but dropped out of university and moved back home in 2014, to take a ‘gap year’ to reconsider his plans.
Like many upper middle class South Africans, the family lived in a secure, gated, luxury housing estate. For all its beauty and cultural diversity, the risks associated with both visiting and living in South Africa are oftentimes confronting. The country is known for its high rates of violent crime, including murder, rape, carjacking, robbery and home invasions. Violent crimes such as home invasions occur not just at night, but at all hours of the day. Many intruders prefer to break into homes when occupants are home, so they can readily hand over concealed valuables while any alarms are deactivated. For many privileged families, opting to live in a gated community with 24 hour security provides reassurance that the risk of home invasions is minimal. Most of the time, that is.

In late 2018, James Gargasoulas was found guilty of six counts of murder, for running down pedestrians almost 2 years earlier in Melbourne’s Bourke Street mall during the busy lunch hour. Questions had been raised as to whether James would be fit to stand trial based on a subsequent mental health diagnosis and his long history of frequent drug use. Thankfully for the victims’ families, justice had been done. Partly, anyway. But they had no way of knowing how James’ mental health and other mitigating factors would affect his sentence. At the same time, the victims’ families had another fight on their hands. Victoria Police were now firmly in the glare of the media spotlight over their questionable judgement and decision making in the 12 hours leading up to the massacre - key decisions which failed to result in James being arrested for earlier stabbing his brother. But it was uncertain whether senior police would be held accountable by the coroner for how their critical incident management protocols did - or didn’t - protect the public when it mattered.

WARNING: This episode contains details of child abuse
On 20 January 2017, during the typically busy lunch hour in the Melbourne CBD, 27 year old James Gargasoulas drove along the footpath of multiple blocks of Bourke Street, killing six unsuspecting people and injuring many more. The aftermath of his rampage left the people of Melbourne stunned and grieving. As details of the lead up to the carnage emerged, the public and victims’ families were outraged.
Police had been tailing James for 12 hours before the massacre, as he taunted them and led law enforcement on a wild goose chase around the suburbs after stabbing his brother. The big question was, why hadn’t he been arrested sooner when numerous opportunities were available? Media reports soon revealed that James was a repeat violent offender who was out on bail when he ploughed through the city crowds, and answers were demanded as to why.
How could the bail system be so fallible as to allow someone so dangerous back onto the streets? But that wasn’t the only concern. As court proceedings commenced, victims and survivors were anxious at the prospect that the man who had destroyed their lives may not even be found fit to stand trial at all.

Welcome listener to Season 3, I'm glad you made it. I will have a new episode for you every other week so I hope you're ready to join me by the fire.
(Part 1) On 20 January 2017, office workers and tourists were among the throngs of people making their way through Bourke Street Mall amidst the lunch hour hustle and bustle of the Melbourne CBD. But the sunny summer’s day was rudely disrupted by the sound of tires skidding and police sirens blaring. In less than a minute, 27 year old James Gargasoulas had driven along the footpath multiple blocks of Bourke Street, wreaking havoc and creating a terror amongst Melbourne citizens, the fallout of which lingers today. During his rampage, James killed six people, including a three month old baby, and injured many more. But this wasn’t the most shocking aspect of what occurred. James was a repeat violent offender, and was on bail when he ploughed through the city crowds. The cascade of events culminating in what can only be described as utter carnage, led to painful questions. How safe was the Melbourne public in the course of going about their business? And how could they trust that those tasked with keeping them safe - the police - could protect them and their city when it mattered?

Today’s story is something a little different. Our protagonist didn’t set out to hurt somebody else. He didn’t harm innocent people. Content Warning: Graphic Audio, Maternal Filicide Black Label episodes are typically exclusive to Patreon supporters, but here you go! This is Season 2 Episode 2 on Black Label. The maternal instinct of a mother is an all-encompassing level of emotion. To love, nurture, and protect their child is biologically embedded, a bond that can never be broken. That is how it should be. But life is a complex matrix of relationships, emotions, and decision-making, and the human psyche is a powerful fighting force. Maternal filicide, the murder of a child by their mother, is a murky understudied arena where those natural instincts are replaced with an entirely different kind of drive. A drive that takes away the very life they previously gave so lovingly. Neutral Bay’s commercial centre is Military Road. One of the busiest arterial roads on the lower north shore, it’s the main gateway to Sydney’s picturesque and world renowned northern beaches. The most popular and historic commercial establishment in Neutral Bay is The Oaks Hotel which opened in 1885. As the social hub of the suburb, The Oaks is an institution where lower north shore residents relax, celebrate, or enjoy a quiet drink. It’s certainly not a place locals go, expecting to not make it home.Visit us online at ObscuraCrimePodcast.comCheckout our other podcasts at itsArcLightMedia.comSupport the Obscura podcast and access the exclusive Black Label episodes by becoming a Patron at Patreon.com/obscuracrimepodcast(Sources can be found on our website)
In Adelaide and around the southern coastline, residents and tourists alike flock to the pristine beaches that offer some respite from the sweltering heat. But if you drive north of the city, the landscape is a different story. Leaving the outskirts of the city, the historic bluestone buildings give way to suburban and industrial sprawl. Aside from the wheat fields, the terrain further inland quickly becomes desolate and harsh. The grass - where there is any - is brown, not green. As you travel along the straight, flat road, the distance between towns becomes greater, and in between there is no sign of human life as far as the eye can see. If you’re unfamiliar with the area, the remoteness of this part of the state seems like the middle of nowhere, and it’s easy to feel completely cut off from civilisation. And while red dirt and flat plains stretch for miles all the way to the horizon, whether in the pitch black of night or the blazing heat of a mid-summers day, there is nowhere to run if you need to make a hasty escape from something. Or someone. In the dead of night, the only light to show the way is the moon overhead. With no one around for miles, the silence is deafening.Visit us online at ObscuraCrimePodcast.comCheckout our other podcasts at itsArcLightMedia.comSupport the Obscura podcast and access the exclusive Black Label episodes by becoming a Patron at Patreon.com/obscuracrimepodcast(Sources can be found on our website)
Typically Black Label monthly episodes are restricted to Patreon supporters, decided to make an exception. This is Season 2 Episode 9 on Black Label! Listener, the case you are about to hear is the darkest I’ve covered this season. The acts carried out behind closed doors in this case are among the most heinous that can be imaged. In 2016 in Knoxville, Tennessee, a loving family had their world ripped apart. Evil entered their lives in the days after Thanksgiving in that year. They could never have known it was coming. There were no warning signs. There’s a saying that’s often banded around. That it’s the quiet ones we have to watch and look out for. This case is an example of why sometimes that statement is absolutely true.Visit us online at ObscuraCrimePodcast.comCheckout our other podcasts at itsArcLightMedia.comSupport the Obscura podcast and access the exclusive Black Label episodes by becoming a Patron at Patreon.com/obscuracrimepodcast(Sources can be found on our website)

The chilly midwinter morning of 11 January 1992 in southern Indiana was shaping up to be ideal for quail hunting. At around 10:45am on the outskirts of Jefferson Proving Ground just outside the town of Madison, two brothers caught sight of something off the side of Lemon Road as they drove along. The men jumped out of their pickup and walked through an isolated open field toward what looked like a department store mannequin laying on the ground. It was a strange location to stumble upon something so out of place. But as the men moved closer, their confusion turned to horror...Visit us online at ObscuraCrimePodcast.comCheckout our other podcasts at itsArcLightMedia.comSupport the Obscura podcast and access the exclusive Black Label episodes by becoming a Patron at Patreon.com/obscuracrimepodcast(Sources can be found on our website)
In April 2017, following some months of debate, Charlottesville voted to remove the statue of Robert E Lee. But this stalled in early May, when a temporary injunction issued by the court prohibited the removal of the statue for another 6 months. By this time, the city’s former Lee Park had become the preferred venue for various neo-Confederate and far right wing political groups to hold public events in Charlottesville. This included demonstrations protesting the removal of the statues. These protests were met with peaceful resistance from anti-racism counter-protestors, but tensions between the two groups usually escalated. Attempts to keep them separated weren’t always successful, and intervention by law enforcement only served to further incite backlash from both sides. It’s against this socio-political backdrop that today’s story unfolded.Visit us online at ObscuraCrimePodcast.comCheckout our other podcasts at itsArcLightMedia.comSupport the Obscura podcast and access the exclusive Black Label episodes by becoming a Patron at Patreon.com/obscuracrimepodcast(Sources can be found on our website)

What you’re about to hear didn’t happen all that long ago. Unfortunately for the victim in today’s story, more extensive legislative protection came too late for what transpired one unusually hot June in east Texas. But it proved to be the catalyst for much-needed reform when it comes to prosecuting hate crimes, and for taking a small step towards attempting to address pervasive and entrenched racism. And as we know, we still have a long, long way to go. One adolescent rite of passage where many of these key memories are formed - both good and bad - is parties. For many of us, parties during our teenage years often marked the many ‘firsts’ in a young persons’ life. The first time we could drive after getting our licence. Our first kiss. The first time we experiment with cigarettes, alcohol or harder drugs. For many teens, it’s their first encounter with sex. Unfortunately for some girls, that encounter isn’t always consensual, but instead traumatic. In those situations, we’d like to think that if we, or someone we knew, was raped or sexually assaulted at a party, the person responsible would be ejected and police contacted. Sadly, we know that in reality that doesn’t happen for a range of reasons. It’s cold comfort, but on those occasions, we hope that police will be contacted in the days following the attack, in an attempt to bring the assailant to justice. But that can only happen if the survivor makes it home from the party in the first place. CW: Homophobic Slurs, Rape, Hate CrimesWriter: Gemma HarrisPerhaps you already know this story - or think you do. But as you’ll hear, what happened just outside a town in the midwest state of Wyoming on a chilly fall night in the late 1990s, had haunting parallels with coyote hanging. What started as a grisly warning would become the catalyst for a watershed movement nationwide. One that would see the LGBTQ community finally make a breakthrough when it came to breaking down bigotry and prejudice.Listener, if anything in today’s story has raised any issues for you, or if someone you know needs help, you can contact the LGBT National Hotline in the United States and Canada on 1 888 843 4564 for confidential support. Today’s story takes us across the pond and back in time to 1970s Scotland. Christine Eadie and her friend Helen Scott had known each other since childhood. On October 15, 1977, after a night on the town, their last stop for the night was one of the many popular pubs in the area, The World’s End. Christine and Helen were seen by a police officer walking off with the two men down Saint Mary Street. It was the last time they were seen alive.Edit: Unfortunately, Angus has been pronounced as "Agnes". This was not caught during the recording phase and a deadline had to be met. Listener, what happens when your home is destroyed in a natural disaster or accident and you lose the very people you need around you? You have no home to go to, and are cast adrift without the people you love who you rely on to make difficult times easier to bear. You feel abandoned and alone. And listener, what happens if that ‘accident’ that destroyed your home and killed your loved ones wasn’t actually determined to be an accident at all, but something far more sinister, caused by the last person on earth you’d suspect? In 2015 the discovery of a child’s body on a secluded area of beach sparked a quest to find the child’s real identity and who was responsible for her death. The death of a young child is a tragic event. The death of a young child due to murder is an event that lights a fire under all involved, to seek the truth and achieve justice for that child and life they have lost. Justice is not a straight-forward concept in this case as you will hear. I will leave it up to you listener to decide for yourself, if justice, in this case, was truly achieved.Visit us online at ObscuraCrimePodcast.comCheckout our other podcasts at itsArcLightMedia.comSupport the Obscura podcast and access the exclusive Black Label episodes by becoming a Patron at Patreon.com/obscuracrimepodcast

Most of us are familiar with reality tv shows where people are isolated in remote locations around the world to test and demonstrate their skills, stamina and endurance required to overcome the obstacles presented by mother nature. Extreme temperatures, exposure, hunger, dehydration, and exhaustion - not to mention threats from native wildlife, all pose additional complications.Listener... what happens when you’re stranded and don’t have that experience and those survival skills? No idea how far away you are from the closest town? No way of knowing when - or if - you’ll be rescued? And listener - what if, stranded in the middle of nowhere, the movement of the person you could suddenly hear as they made their way through the trees towards you, belonged to someone who wasn’t coming to help you - but to hunt you.Visit us online at ObscuraCrimePodcast.comCheckout our other podcasts at itsArcLightMedia.comSupport the Obscura podcast and access the exclusive Black Label episodes by becoming a Patron at Patreon.com/obscuracrimepodcast
On March 26, 2018 in the late afternoon, the California Highway Patrol was called out to a crash site on US highway 101 in the affluent Mendocino County, town of Westport, California. A hundred feet down a jagged cliff overlooking the Pacific Ocean sat a 2003 GMC Yukon SUV registered to Jennifer Jean Hart, or Jen as she was called. Upon closer inspection, it was discovered the SUV held an entire family, but not just any family. This was a family affectionately known as “the Hart Tribe” by their friends and by their community. For today’s show we cover a lot of ground. I figure I can only tell the story of Zach and Addie once…so…I better do the story justice. To finish out the year on the main feed, I’ve chosen to go out with a bang. Get comfortable. Because you’re about to hear about one of what I consider to be one of the most interesting true crime stories. A long with the intertwining history surrounding the tragedy that created a tangled web of misery and devastation. Now, let’s get on with it. The murder of Brandon Teena thrust the trans community into the forefront of public discussion. Before the early 1990s, transgender people were a silent minority within society. When the case we'll be discussing had originally received national coverage, the disregard of preferred pronouns and dead naming were not considered offensive and some of the audio clips, legal transcripts, and direct quotes used in creating this episode may reflect that. This episode will also include unedited audio of a police interview with a rape victim, which may be too distressing for some of our listeners. You've been warned.Visit us online at ObscuraCrimePodcast.comCheckout our other podcasts at itsArcLightMedia.comSupport the Obscura podcast and access the exclusive Black Label episodes by becoming a Patron at Patreon.com/obscuracrimepodcast
